• Ubuntu installer doesn't see internal hard drive on DELL Vostro 3360

  I just received a new DELL Vostro 3360, it has Windows 7 preinstalled. When it comes to the partition window I can't see the hard drive there. I see only /dev/sda or /dev/sdb (either one and in both cases it's a usb drive from which I'm installing). I tried every imaginable BIOS configuration. Tried to change the SATA mode to ATA, DHCI and more. EDIT: I tried to install with standard Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit, and 11.10 64 bit official versions. No luck. I'll appreciate any suggestion.

• SDL Fullscreen and Gnome-panel

  On Ubuntu 10.10, the following SDL code cause Gnome-panel to cease updating its drawing, however it does still function (ie windows on the panel open where they should be, but you just have to know where they 'would be' on instinct/memory). • Why does this script not open parallel gnome-terminals on a server?

  Why am I not able to have parallel gnome-terminals on my server while I can on my client. When I run this on a maverick server at a server farm, the second window does not appear until after I close the first one and wait 10 seconds. I am using tightvncserver to view the server desktop. (I could have simplified a bit more. The 10 second sleep is extraneous to the problem. In my real world application I need the first terminal to do some real work before starting the second. The problem probably still exists even if there is no sleep.)

• Installing netflix, terminal is getting hung up

  Just got Ubuntu up and running, I am attempting to follow the steps laid our here to install Netflix via Wine. I have done the 3 terminal commands, and I believe the package has downloaded. The commands: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ehoover/compholio sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install netflix-desktop After this the terminal spits out a user agreement, and I cannot get past this. Is there some way to minimize the window within the terminal? This is what I see: . Netflix is not yet in my dash. It also appears that a variety of other updates are being held up, I assume, because my terminal is midthought.

• BizTalk 2009 - Project Creation Failed

  A couple of weeks ago I had some issue with my BizTalk Server 2009 development environment  which resulted in a reinstall of Visual Studio 2008 and the Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1. Following this reinstall I began to have problems when trying to create  BizTalk 2009 projects: Error Details: “Create BizTalk Project …. Project Creation Failed” It turns out that this is a known issue with BizTalk Server 2009 and Visual Studio 2008, whereby the installation of the Visual Studio Service Pack 1 can cause corruption to the BizTalk installation preventing the creation of any new projects. To resolve this issue go to control panel > add or remove programs > Microsoft BizTalk Server 2009 and select Change or Remove.  When the window opens choose “Repair”.  Upon completion you should once again be able to create BizTalk projects.

• Using Windows Previous Versions to access ZFS Snapshots (July 14, 2009)

  The Previous Versions tab on the Windows desktop provides a straightforward, intuitive way for users to view or recover files from ZFS snapshots.  ZFS snapshots are read-only, point-in-time instances of a ZFS dataset, based on the same copy-on-write transactional model used throughout ZFS.  ZFS snapshots can be used to recover deleted files or previous versions of files and they are space efficient because unchanged data is shared between the file system and its snapshots.  Snapshots are available locally via the .zfs/snapshot directory and remotely via Previous Versions on the Windows desktop. Shadow Copies for Shared Folders was introduced with Windows Server 2003 but subsequently renamed to Previous Versions with the release of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.  Windows shadow copies, or snapshots, are based on the Volume Snapshot Service (VSS) and, as the [Shared Folders part of the] name implies, are accessible to clients via SMB shares, which is good news when using the Solaris CIFS Service.  And the nice thing is that no additional configuration is required - it "just works". On Windows clients, snapshots are accessible via the Previous Versions tab in Windows Explorer using the Shadow Copy client, which is available by default on Windows XP SP2 and later.  For Windows 2000 and pre-SP2 Windows XP, the client software is available for download from Microsoft: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders Client. Assuming that we already have a shared ZFS dataset, we can create ZFS snapshots and view them from a Windows client. zfs snapshot tank/home/administrator@snap101zfs snapshot tank/home/administrator@snap102 To view the snapshots on Windows, map the dataset on the client then right click on a folder or file and select Previous Versions.  Note that Windows will only display previous versions of objects that differ from the originals.  So you may have to modify files after creating a snapshot in order to see previous versions of those files. The screenshot above shows various snapshots in the Previous Versions window, created at different times.  On the left panel, the .zfs folder is visible, illustrating that this is a ZFS share.  The .zfs setting can be toggled as desired, it makes no difference when using previous versions.  To make the .zfs folder visible: zfs set snapdir=visible tank/home/administrator To hide the .zfs folder: zfs set snapdir=hidden tank/home/administrator The following screenshot shows the Previous Versions panel when a file has been selected.  In this case the user is prompted to view, copy or restore the file from one of the available snapshots. As can be seen from the screenshots above, the Previous Versions window doesn't display snapshot names: snapshots are listed by snapshot creation time, sorted in time order from most recent to oldest.  There's nothing we can do about this, it's the way that the interface works.  Perhaps one point of note, to avoid confusion, is that the ZFS snapshot creation time isnot the same as the root directory creation timestamp. In conclusion, Shadow Copies for Shared Folders provides a straightforward way for users to view or recover files from ZFS snapshots.  The Windows desktop provides an easy to use, intuitive GUI and no configuration is required to use or access previous versions of files or folders. • Rebooting problem

  After restarting my ubuntu PC, I am getting a dialog window showing "Your system is running in low graphics mode" and after clicking on 'OK', I was prompted with three options 1. Run in low graphics mode for just one session 2. Reconfigure graphics 3. Troubleshoot the error 4. Exit to console login When I troubleshoot the error, its showing the black screen with following lines which I remember: we do not own /var/log/pm-powersave.log ....................................... couldn't write bytes: Broken pipe ....................................... ....................................... Starting System V runlevel compatibility got strucked at this point. Actually before restarting, I have changed the owner for all the files under the directory "/var/log" and "/var/lib". Is there any relation with the above issue. Please help me out to resolve the issue. Its urgent.

• Monitor blinking

  Hi I have Ubuntu 10.04, my laptop is ASUS k50ij, intel duo t3000, 2gb ram, 320 HDD, intel gma 4500M video card. My problem is that a couple days ago my monitor had start blinking for a few seconds. Then it stops and begins the same behaviour let's say in next 2 hours. What am i missing here? Another funny problem is that when i give more or less brightness to monitor the pop up window shows and giving "Power information: Laptop battery is charged". When my brightness is lower the blinking increases and vice versa. thx for help

• How can I reduce lagging with GUI/GPU stuff -- make Unity run smaller, quicker, faster?

  Finally installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my HP Pavilion 2000. Have all of my apps on and loaded and am happy thus far. ONE ISSUE -- I'm experiencing a small amount of GUI/GPU style lagging when I go to open menus, move windows, etc. What settings can I disable to allow it to run sharply and quickly, even if i t means sacrificing some of the graphics? Have already installed pre-load. Just want the OS to run sharply and quickly with menu refreshes, window moves, etc. I do not mind sacrificing graphics. Somone mentionted to me I have to install video drivers but the two that come up in system settings under drivers it won't let me install. ALSO : I am driving a second 19" monitor -- would that make a difference performance wise as well? Thanks in advance. Chris

Now we hopefully support all of Twig built-in elements. It means Tags, Filters, Functions, Tests and Operators (see Twig documentation for more information). All elements are also documented, so if you don't know what which element does, just read it in the IDE documentation window! We try to resolve some Completion Context to suggest you only the most corresponding element types, but it's not so visible, since almost everything can be used everywhere in Twig files ;) And that's all for today and as usual, please test it and if you find something strange, don't hesitate to file a new issue (product php, component Twig). • VPN no longer works, saves old password?

  I am not sure if this question is related to 11.10 or gnome 3.2, but the VPN configuration screen has changed, and now the user and password is optional, but there is no way for me to override it. On our VPN we use a token, so I have to enter the password each time. But even if I clear the password, clear the password and the user, there is no way for me to unset the user and password, so I am unable to access the VPN. Because he never asks the password anymore, and each time I return to the VPN configuration window, I see the same setting. Please help. Is there another way to configure the VPN? [Found Quick Fix] Recreate the VPN connection, fill everything in but the password, and this will work the first time.

• Cannot assign keys to Wacom scroll wheel anymore

  Hi all, my Wacom Graphire 4 used to work perfectly well until, I think, Ubuntu 10.4. At that point something changed in the configuration and I couldn't assign a key to the scroll wheel anymore (note: the pad's scroll wheel, not the mouse's), i.e this command: xsetwacom set "Wacom Graphire4 6x8 pad" AbsWDn "key +" returns silently without error but nothing happens. Same goes for AbsWUp, RelWDn, RelWUp. Apparently though the problem is even deeper as pressing the wheel in a xev window doesn't seem to have any effect. Moreover I am thoroughly confused on how the various pieces (kernel driver, xorg driver, evdev, HAL, xinput?) are supposed to work together and if the wacom module that ships with Ubuntu is the one from linuxwacom or not. Any ideas? I don't want to become an X.org hacker just to understand what's going on... it used to work! NOTE: I have already read question 3940, but that's not the same problem.

• Windows move to external monitor when closing lid

  I'm using Cinnamon (on 12.10) on a laptop (Compaq 6710b business model) with an external monitor. Both screens run at 1680 x 1050, the external monitor is located on the right. During normal operation everything works fine; windows open in whatever monitor my mouse pointer is when they open and I can freely drag them to the other monitor. When I close the lid of my laptop both displays shut down as expected. When I open the lid, however, the lock window opens on the external monitor and any windows that were open on the laptop screen have moved to the external monitor as well. Nothing happens between closing the lid and opening it; no suspend, powerdown, hibernate or anything, monitor stays attached; even mouse is untouched (pointer on laptop screen). Is there any way to fix it so my windows stay on whatever monitor I left them before closing the lid? Alternative solutions are welcome.

In the following, I explain how you can change the static display string to a dynamic string that reads the display label from a resource bundle so train stop labels can be internationalized. There are different strategies available for managing message bundles within an Oracle JDeveloper project. In this blog entry, I decided to build and configure the default properties file as indicated by the projects properties. To learn about the suggested file name and location, open the JDeveloper project properties (use a right mouse click on the project node in the Application Navigator and choose Project Properties. Select the Resource Bundle node to see the suggested name and location for the default message bundle. Note that this is the resource bundle that Oracle JDeveloper would automatically create when you assign a text resource to an ADF Faces component in a page. For the train stop display name, we need to create the message bundle manually as there is no context menu help available in Oracle JDeveloper. For this, use a right mouse click on the JDeveloper project and choose New | General | File from the menu and in the opened dialog. Specify the message bundle file name as the name looked up before in the project properties Resource Bundle option. Also, ensure that the file is saved in a directory structure that matches the package structure shown in the Resource Bundle dialog. For example, you would save the properties file in the View Project's src > adf > sample directory if the package structure was "adf.sample" (adf.sample.ViewControllerBundle). Edit the properties file and define key – values pairs for the train stop component. In the sample, such key value pairs are TrainStop1=Train Stop 1 TrainStop2=Train Stop 2 TrainStop3=Train Stop 3 Next, double click the faces-config.xml file and switch the opened editor to the Overview tab. Select the Application category and press the green plus icon next to the Resource Bundle section. Define the resource bundle Base Name as the package and properties file name, for example adf.sample.ViewControllerBundle Finally, define a variable name for the message bundle so the bundle can be accessed from Expression Language. For this blog example, the name is chosen as "messageBundle". <resource-bundle>   <base-name>adf.sample.ViewControllerBundle</base-name>   <var>messageBundle</var> </resource-bundle> Next, select the display-name element in the train stop node (similar to when creating the display name) and use the Property Inspector to change the static display string to an EL expression referencing the message bundle. • Qt Certification Exams

  I'm wondering about doing a Qt Certification Exam this year, but I'm not 100% sure the investment is worth. I'm considering it because I think it could be a nice + on my resume, and as you know, I'm all for improving my software engineer persona. As I already earn a BSc and MSc degrees in computer stuff, I guess I see the certification process as some kind of adventure. Anyway, I know I'll spend a lot of time preparing myself for the exam and I just wanted to know if a Qt certification is worth the effort. Apparently there are 2 certificates that you can get in the Qt world: Nokia Certified Qt Developer (basic) Nokia Certified Qt Specialist (advanced) Nowadays I build cross-platform software in C++ and this exam would fit beautifully in my resume. My main concern is that, given the obscure future of Qt, I might be throwing time and money out the window. I'm looking for some advice regarding the usefulness of such certifications.

• Enabling Multi-touch features of the Apple Magic Mouse on Ubuntu 12.04

  I want to write a simple app that uses Apple's Magic Trackpad, nothing special, just so that it recognizes atleast one gesture. The thing is, Ubuntu itself doesnt really recognize this device. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and by default the device works with 1 finger, but without tap-click or doubletap, 3 fingers move the window and 3 finger spread makes it fullscreen. I managed to enable 2 finger scrolling with "xinput set-prop 8 'Two-Finger Scrolling' 1 1", but thats about it. No other gestures work, ginn doesnt start, giesview detects the device but doesnt respond to any of the gestures, and touchegg doesnt start either. I tried example apps from qt that come with ubuntu but they dont work. So... what do i do? i tried using qt but all i get from the app is "Got touch without getting TouchBegin for id XX" what else can i use to get my app to work with multitouch devices?

• IIS Not Accepting Login Credentials

  I have an ASP.NET web form using Microsoft's boilerplate Active Directory login page, set up exactly as suggested. (See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms180890%28v=vs.80%29.aspx) Windows Authentication is activated on the "Default Website" and "MyWebsite" levels, and Domain\This.User is given "Allow" access to the site. After entering the valid credentials for This.User on the web form, a popup window appears asking me to enter my credentials yet again. Despite entering valid credentials for This.User (after attempting Domain\This.User and This.User formats), it rejects the credentials and returns an unauthorized user page. Active Directory user This.User is valid, the IP address of the AD server has been verified and SPN's have been set up for the server. Any thoughts as to what may be causing this? I can post code if needed.

• Video capture Performance

  I have noticed high CPU utilization in a number of applications (except mplayer) which read from the embedded webcam on my laptop. Bizarrely CPU utilization varies proportionately to the level of illumination present. I know that that high CPU usage has nothing to do with rendering the video, as I have written a simple app using the OpenCV library to simply grab frames from the webcam, and cpu usage is still high. I think that mplayer might be using my GPU (and the other apps aren't), but since its not an issue with rendering, I dont think this explains anything. Cheese Low light --- ~12% CPU Bright Light ---- ~63% CPU Camorama Low light --- ~7% CPU Bright Light ---- ~30% CPU Opencv C++ library, (display in a single highgui window) Low light --- ~13% CPU Bright Light ---- ~40% CPU (same test on windows 7, 4-9%) Mplayer No problem, 1-2% regardless of light levels Note: If all I want't to do is capture a feed from my webcam I would use mplayer and forget about it, but I'm developing an application which uses the OpenCV to capture a video feed among other things, performance is important.

• Unity does not display properly [closed]

  Ubuntu Unity on the Ubuntu netbook edition installs without a problem but when I log in though, where the panels are, there is just blank area with a shadow effect style thing on it. I can open apps but the Window buttons and the global menu are not visable. Does this mean that I cannot use Unity. I'm running it through Wubi on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. My total ammount of graphics memory is 831MB My dedicated memory is 128MB. The odd thing is is that Windows Aero displays without a problem so why is there a problem with Unity Hope this helps Ben

• How to fix? Gnome-shell shows up and instantly stop working

  I am using ubuntu 12.04, but I love gnome shell, but not the Gnome Classic which comes installed. When I reinstalled, I instantly installed Gnome-shell by terminal using Unity, it worked for a while and then I started installing some extensions. I rebooted and it just stopped working, it shows up for a second, then I can only see my desktop with icons but without panels and I can't even use the terminal (CTRL + ALT + T) since the window doesn't really select when I click it. How could I fix this? I tried reinstalling Gnome-shell and all the stuff I installed for it, but now it doesn't work even without any extension.
