  • Is there a tool to build and test a local change on multiple platforms

    A company I used to work for was plagued with build breakages. So they made a tool that would zip up a developers local changes (which it detected from SCM) and send them to a remote server for a test build. The remote server would update its copy of the source with the repository and then apply the changes it received from the developer. It would then build and test the changes. We actually targeted multiple platforms so it would do the above for each of those platforms. When it was done, if everything was green, the developer was reasonable confident they could submit the change without breaking the "real" build. Are there any tools out there that do something similar?

  • ASP.NET profile deletion

    We use the ASP.NET profile subsystem to associate key-value pairs of information with users. I am implementing functionality for the deletion of users. I have been using the ProfileManager.DeleteProfile(string userName) method, but I have noticed that this leaves a row in the aspnet_Users table in the aspnetdb database we use to store the profile information. Clearly, I could manipulate the database directly, but I am reluctant to do so. What is the best way to ensure all information assocaited with a user is deleted from the aspnetdb? PS: there is a tantalising Membership.DeleteUser(string userName, bool deleteEverything) method, but this returns a database connection error. A web.config issue?

    One of our vendors provides a web service API to allow their customers to validate data in a database. As part of their SDK, they provide a WSDL (Web Service Definition Language) file that, according to their documentation, can "be read by software applications and application development tools. An application tool such as Microsoft's Visual Studio can import a WSDL document and automatically generate software classes that access the Web Services the WSDL defines." I'm currently using Visual Studio 2005. What do I need to do to get Visual Studio to do the magic code generation for me?

    Hi, I am trying to add a dll that contains some custom 3rd party conrtols and some in house user controls and am getting the following error - "The Assembly "MyASsembly.dll" could not be loaded.     I have many Visual Studio 2008 web projects targeted at the .NET Framework 3.5. I want to start using Visual Studio 2010, but the .NET Framework 4.0 isn't very well supported by web hosting companies just yet. It seems to make sense to stick with the .NET Framework 3.5 for now. If I open my projects in Visual Studio 2010 and leave them targeted at the .NET Framework 3.5, am I going to have problems?

  • Giant online image gallery - How do I avoid OutOfMemoryError?

    For anyone who's wondering, the gallery is http://www.spore.com/sporepedia. My app uses the Spore API to get the 100 newest creations, then displays them in a GridView. The text data about the creations is easy to store, but the images present a problem. As far as I know, I can either keep the images in a Hashtable or grab them every time they are viewed. Neither of these will work - the Hashtable quickly presents an OutOfMemoryError, and the constant reloading causes a lot of load on the server and a lot of lag on the client. Is there a better way to store the images?

  • In .NET, what thread will Events be handled in?

    I have attempted to implement a producer/consumer pattern in c#. I have a consumer thread that monitors a shared queue, and a producer thread that places items onto the shared queue. The producer thread is subscribed to receive data...that is, it has an event handler, and just sits around and waits for an OnData event to fire (the data is being sent from a 3rd party api). When it gets the data, it sticks it on the queue so the consumer can handle it. When the OnData event does fire in the producer, I had expected it to be handled by my producer thread. But that doesn't seem to be what is happening. The OnData event seems as if it's being handled on a new thread instead! Is this how .net always works...events are handled on their own thread? Can I control what thread will handle events when they're raised? What if hundreds of events are raised near-simultaneously...would each have its own thread?

  • In Birt Reports - Displaying the most common string value in group.

    For this example data: Index, State, Food 1, CA, Hamburger 2, NY, Lettuce 3, CA, Cheese 4, NY, Lettuce 5, NY, Cheese 6, AR, Cheese I would like to group by State and show the most common food for each state. So the result for the example should be: State, Popular Food CA, Hamburger NY, Lettuce AR, Cheese The problem is I can't find an aggregation that would return the most common string. There is the 'mode' function but it only works on integers. Am I missing Something? Thanks!

    I have two entities in core data (call them entityOne and entityTwo). I have a entityOne<---entityTwo relationship between them. I am now trying to code an NSPredicate to fetch entityTwo objects on the following basis: Fetch entityTwo objects that have a relationship with a specified entityOne object. Filter out those entityTwo objects which have no value for one of their attributes. I am best doing both of these in an NSPredicate or is there a better way? I am trying the following: NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"(attribute <> "") AND (relationship == entityOne"]; [request setPredicate:predicate]; Any pointers on coding great fully received.

  • Halting Django's dev server via page request?

    I'm looking at writing a portable, light-weight Python app. As the "GUI toolkit" I'm most familiar with — by a wide margin! — is HTML/CSS/JS, I thought to use Django as a framework for the project, using its built-in "development server" (manage.py runserver). I've been banging on a proof-of-concept for a couple hours and the only real problem I've encountered so far is shutting down the server once the user has finished using the app. Ideally, I'd like there to be a link on the app's pages which shuts down the server and closes the page, but nothing I see in the Django docs suggests this is possible. Can this be done? For that matter, is this a reasonable approach for writing a small, portable GUI tool?

  • LINQ .Cast() extension method fails but (type)object works.

    To convert between some LINQ to SQL objects and DTOs we have created explicit cast operators on the DTOs. That way we can do the following: DTOType MyDTO = (LinqToSQLType)MyLinq2SQLObj; This works well. However when you try to cast using the LINQ .Cast() extension method it trows an invalid cast exception saying cannot cast type Linq2SQLType to type DTOType. i.e. the below does not work List<DTO.Name> Names = dbContact.tNames.Cast<DTO.Name>() .ToList(); But the below works fine: DAL.tName MyDalName = new DAL.tName(); DTO.Name MyDTOName = (DTO.Name)MyDalName; and the below also works fine List<DTO.Name> Names = dbContact.tNames.Select(name => (DTO.Name)name) .ToList(); Why does the .Cast() extension method throw an invalid cast exception? I have used the .Cast() extension method in this way many times in the past and when you are casting something like a base type to a derived type it works fine, but falls over when the object has an explicit cast operator.

  • Sending a 'copy' command in cocoa

    Is there any way to send a copy (command-c) instruction without using a cgEvent to mimic the keystrokes? I don't have access to the text field in the application I want to take text from, so need to replicate manually copying to the clipboard, and there seemss to be a bug with cgevent posting. According the Quartz documentation, to type a capital Z I should use: CGEventRef event1, event2, event3, event4; event1 = CGEventCreateKeyboardEvent (NULL, (CGKeyCode)56, true); event2 = CGEventCreateKeyboardEvent (NULL, (CGKeyCode)6, true); event3 = CGEventCreateKeyboardEvent (NULL, (CGKeyCode)6, false); event4 = CGEventCreateKeyboardEvent (NULL, (CGKeyCode)56, false); However, if I attach this set of instuctions to an NSTimer, it only works the first time it is fired. example output: ZzzZzzzzZZzzZ (vs expected ZZZZZZZZZ). How else might I send a copy command to the active window?

    Hi Is there a simple way of tracking the change of an Mdi's children i.e. when they are created and closed, something like an event OnMdiChildListChanged (I realise this doesn't actually exist). I am also aware that I could have a method within my Mdi that handles the creation of child forms and logs the state of them or even create an Interface that defines that a child form has a "NotifyParent" method that is then called on close of the form, but i was wondering if there was any built in events that i could plumb into?   • How do I design a web service (microsoft) that can be consumed by multiple end points?

    My company is planning to implement a solution in multiple applications that will help to validate mailing addresses at the point of data entry. We're using UPS's Extended Address Validation (XAV) web service API to validate the addresses. Our current plan is to build a .NET web service that can be used to communicate between our applications and the UPS API. We have applications in VB6, classic ASP, and .NET 2.0, so we'd like to implement a solution that can be easily consumed by each of these programming environments. What are our (Microsoft) options for designing a web service that can be consumed by multiple clients? In particular, is there a way to design a single web service that can respond with JSON (in case we want to validate our web page using javascript) in addition to XML? I'm new to designing web services and want to make sure we consider all of our options. I've heard terms like asmx, WCF, OData, etc., but I don't know which frameworks will support what we're trying to do and where to start.

  • Missing tables on Scaffold Dynamic Data page

    I created a Linq-to-SQL DBML for the first time. I dragged and dropped all my tables over to the designer. The tables all appear in the designer.cs file. In Global.asax, I also have model.RegisterContext() with the ScaffoldAllTables = true option. The routes are also setup. I can pull up the Scaffolding page, but there's at least one table that is missing that I'm trying to get to show up. This missing table has a relationship with a child table that references it. The child table appears. When viewing data for the child table, the column that references the missing/parent table shows the numeric PK int value, rather than showing the "name". So instead of showing "Cars" it shows 1, and instead of showing "Planes" it shows 2, etc. There's another table in the DB that has the same type of structure as the missing table, and it is correctly appearing in the scaffolded tables. For this missing table, I've tried explicitly adding the ScaffoldTable attribute to no avail. Does anyone know what would cause a table like this to not appear in the list Scaffolded tables?     Is there anyway to change the coordinates of some of the points within a GraphicsPath object while leaving the other points where they are? The GraphicsPath object that gets passed into my method will contain a mixture of polygons and lines. My method would want to look something like: void UpdateGraphicsPath(GraphicsPath gPath, RectangleF regionToBeChanged, PointF delta) { // Find the points in gPath that are inside regionToBeChanged // and move them by delta. // gPath.PathPoints[i].X += delta.X; // Compiles but doesn't work } GraphicsPath.PathPoints seems to be readonly, so does GraphicsPath.PathData.Points. So I am wondering if this is even possible. Perhaps generating a new GraphicsPath object with an updated set of points? How can I know if a point is part of a line or a polygon? If anyone has any suggestions then I would be grateful.

  • jQuery code works in Firebug, but not on its own

    I'm having quite the brainbuster of an issue right now. I am trying to change a link's hash tag at the end from "respond" to "comments" with jQuery. I have a simple script that should do this, however it does not work. The link does not change. However, Firebug shows no errors and when I run the code in Firebug's console, it works just as I intend. Why doesn't this work on its own? Does anybody have a solution, I'm at my wits edge with this one.
