• Laptop freezes on Wireless Mouse Adapter attach/detach

  I am using Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 with Toshiba Satellite Pro P300-1CG. Recently I have installed Windows 7 64-bit. Now once in a while when I plug-in or plug-out wireless mouse adapter, the computer freezes (image stays on the screen, but the computer is not responsive). I have noticed that it mostly happens after I recover my computer from sleep mode. To continue using laptop I have to shut it down by pressing and holding power button for 7 seconds and then booting it up again. What can be done to prevent this?

• Windows Server 2008: Terminal Services

  I have a Dell R710 with 72GB of memory running Hyper-V. Within Hyper-V I have a Windows 2008 (32-bit) VM running Terminal Services. How do I allocate memory so that any user who connects to this Terminal Server (from their thin-client) is allocated 2GB (or whatever amount I choose) of memory? Currently I have provisioned the TS with 2GB of memory but it seems that this is shared among all that connect. Please let me know if there is further information I can provide. Thank you.

• Having trouble with EPSON Stylus SX130 scanner

  I am trying to scan files with an EPSON Stylus SX130 on windows 7 x64. When i plug in the printer, windows automatically find drivers for printing, but not for scanning. So i go to the manufacturer website to download the drivers, select windows 7 64-bit and download drivers for EPSON Scan. The install works fine, but when i try to scan a file (eg: from paint or Windows fax and scan), the folowing message pops up and freezes the application : the progress bar plays the animation forever and the application does not respond. I then have no choice to kill the application with the task manager. Do you have an idea of what's going on ? How can i fix the problem, ie: how do i get the scanner actually scan files without freezing ? I tried to install the driver from the CD given in the printer package, and got the same problem. The only help i found so far (the error seems somewhat related) is this : Install a xp virtual machine and run it in there

• Installing additional printer drivers (x86) on Windows 7 (x64)

  I've successfully installed Windows 7 (x64) and drivers for my Canon MP510, and have no problem printing with this setup. There is another PC in the network running XP SP3, and I want to share the printer so that users of that PC can also print. On W7 I have the option of installing additional printer drivers for other system architectures (Itanium and x86). I've downloaded the most current 32-bit drivers for the printer, but every time I direct the install dialog to the folder containing the drivers, I get the following error message: Selected printer driver not found The specified location does not contain the driver Canon Inkjet MP510 Printer for the requested processor architecture. Retry Cancel I'm stumped. I'm absolutely certain that the specified location actually does contain the correct drivers; I've even installed them on the XP system. I've tried everything I can think of. What am I overlooking?

• How to diagnose a Windows XP hard crash

  I have a 64-bit Windows XP machine which has hard crashed several times today. The symptoms are that the screen just goes blank, then the reboot cycle starts. There is no blue screen and even though it is switched on, no crash dump file is created. On all occasions it has happened during a period of high CPU/memory activity. I have run a full Dell diagnostics with no failures. Any ideas how to track this down further? Thanks.

• Recover Bios HP DV9700T windows 7 64

  I downloaded the latest DV9700t bios (.59) and ran the update tool in windows 7 64. This seemed to go ok and did the usual system will shutdown in 10 seconds dialog. Updon the reboot nothing happens I get no BIOS screen or anything so I think the bios update went wrong. Which I am annoyed about I have never known a bios update to fail before and lots of people on the internet seem to have had the same problem with the same model. There is a way to recover apparently using crisdisk utility and creating a bootable usb key then holding win+b at power on, unfortunately the utility to make the disk doesn't seem to work in 64 bit versions of windows, the only type I have easy access to. Anyone know a way to create the boot disk in 64?

• Does PCI bus really occupy 1.8GB

  I am using a Dell Vostro 1700 laptop which currently has 2GB of RAM. I was considering buying some more memory to upgrade it to 4GB. I am running 32 bit Windows Vista and I know that there can be issues that prevent it from making use of a full 4GB which I believe relate to the fact that memory mapped devices, e.g. graphics card, also need to be allocated addresses in the 4GB range addressable with 32 bits. Consequently I was looking at device manager - resources by connection - memory to see what devices where allocated what memory addresses. I was surprised to see that there was an entry for [80000000 - F3FFFFFF] PCI bus. That is a 1.8GB range of addresses. When I expanded it the only thing in it was [E0000000 - EFFFFFFF] NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT which is only 256MB. So my question is does the PCI bus really occupy 1.8GB of address space and will it prevent my computer from making use of any more memory than it already has.

• Network not detected, but internet working

  I am using a brand new HP computer with Windows 7 64 bit. When I first hooked it up it detected my network (hooked up through ethernet) easily. However, after I uninstalled Norton Internet Security, it stopped being able to detect my home network. I can still use the internet as if connected, but I can't go into the network options to communicate with other computers. I had this same problem on Windows Vista on my previous computer. Is there any way to fix this so it detects the network?

• Cannot run gnome-session

  I'm having issues running an X Windows session on a RHEL5 64-bit server - whenever I execute the command "gnome-session &", the process goes into the background but nothing happens. I have Exceed installed on my Windows machine which is running when I try to start the gnome-session. I've tried just starting firefox by itself instead of the whole gnome session, but it doesn't work either. Any suggestions? BTW, here's the error message I get when I try to start firefox: firefox: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server localhost:10.0.

I tried to return it to the left side but it went to the right again. • Can't rename folders in Window 7/32bit after anti-virus change

  I recently started having the common, as I realized, problem of not being able to rename folders in Windows 7 (32 bit). I don't understand why it happened after almost a year of ideal use of Windows 7. I haven't removed the libraries nor can I think of anything else that could potentially cause this, at least as far as I know. The only thing I did recently was to change my anti-virus program from the freeware version of Avira to the freeware anti-virus Microsoft Security Essentials. Any idea on what the problem is and how to fix this?

• Getting the keyboard working on a MacBook under Windows XP x64

  Despite Windows XP Professional x64's unsupported status on MacBooks (model A1181), I've managed to get most of the hardware working by manually installing either the drivers on the OS X Snow Leopard CD, or finding the appropriate drivers online. However, even after installing the Apple keyboard driver from the CD, I can't get Windows to actually use the special driver. Instead, the keyboard just shows up as a generic USB keyboard, with non-functioning Fn and other special keys. Being unable to generate a right-click or Ctrl-Alt-Del makes Windows a bit of a challenge to use. I've tried: uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard driver removing the keyboard under device manager and letting Windows re-detect it using device manager to manually update the driver How do I get the special functions of the MacBook keyboard working under XP x64?

  I've got some drivers which are basically LibUSB-Win32 with a new .inf file do describe product/vendor ids and strings which describe my hardware. This works fine for 32 bit windows, but 64 bit versions have problems; namely that Microsoft in their wisdom require all drivers to be digitally signed. So my questions are thus: Is there a version of the LibUSB-Win32 drivers which are already signed I could use? If there aren't already some signed ones I can canibalise, what exactly do I have to do to get my drivers signed. Do I need to get 64 and 32 bit versions signed separately and will this cost more? Is this a free alternative to getting them signed? Are there any other options I should consider besides requiring that my customers boot into test mode each time they start their machines (not an option I'd consider).

To find an element in a sub-trie, he says to do the following: Finding the arc for a symbol s, requires ?nding its corresponding bit in the bit map and then counting the one bits below it in the map to compute an index into the ordered sub-trie. What is the best way to do this? It sounds like the most straightforward way of doing this is to select the bits below that bit and do a population count on the resulting number. Is there a faster or better way to do this?

Any suggestions other then running the application in 32 bit only? Please do not dilute the feedback by asking for or blaming the code, the code is 100% solid, guaranteed! No memory leaks, the crashes clearly are triggered in 32 bit mode only just after start inside the AppKit itself like deep inside NSThread sleep's callstack.

  I am using the net.tcp protocol for various web services. When I reboot my Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) macbook pro, the service never restarts automatically, even though that is how they are set: The only relevant events I can see are in the System Event Log: Error 6/9/2011 19:47 Service Control Manager 7001 None The Net.Tcp Listener Adapter service depends on the Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service service which failed to start because of the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." Error 6/9/2011 19:47 Service Control Manager 7000 None The Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." Error 6/9/2011 19:47 Service Control Manager 7009 None A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service service to connect. This post suggests that it's something else blocking the port (in the post it's SCCM 2007 R3 Client which I don't use). What else could be the problem? If it's something else blocking the port, how do I figure out what? When I manually start the services, they start correctly. • Using pinvoke in c# to call sprintf and friends on 64-bit

  I am having an interesting problem with using pinvoke in C# to call _snwprintf. It works for integer types, but not for floating point numbers. This is on 64-bit Windows, it works fine on 32-bit. • determine parity of a bit representation of a number in MIPS

  Is there some instruction in MIPS that will determine the parity of a certain bit representation? I know to determine whether a "number" has an even parity or an odd parity is to XOR the individual bits of the binary representation together, but that seems computationally-intensive for a set of MIPS instructions... and I need to do this as quick as possible. Also, the number I'm working in is represented in Grey Code... just to throw that in there. So is there some pseudo-instruction in MIPS to determine the parity of a "number" or do I have to do it by hand? If there is no MIPS instruction, which it seems very unlikely to be, any advice on how to do it by hand?   I keep receiving the following error when trying to run MikTeX 2.8 or Visual Studio 2008 on 64-Bit Windows Vista. It's particularly odd because both programs were working problem free until a few days ago. The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail. Opening the Application log provides the following information: Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.8\miktex\bin\texworks.exe". Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.8\miktex\bin\Microsoft.VC90.CRT.MANIFEST" on line 4. Component identity found in manifest does not match the identity of the component requested. Reference is Microsoft.VC90.CRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.30729.4148". Definition is Microsoft.VC90.CRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.30729.1". Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis. It looks like the problem is with Microsoft.VC90.CRT.MANIFEST, but I am not sure why or how to fix this problem. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Visual Studio and MikTeX, as well as uninstalling/reinstalling Microsoft's C++ Redistributable, but nothing seems to be fixing this problem.

The .net Framework v 2.0 installed correctly. How do I fix this? • Install MatroskaProp on Windows 7 x64

  To see more information in Windows Explorer property pages and menus about Matroska Video (.mkv) files, similar to what one can see when selecting native Windows media (.avi, .asf, .wmv or even just plain old mpg) files, Matroska links (from http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html) to a download of the MatroskaProp shell extension (http://www.jory.info/serendipity/archives/14-MatroskaProp-2.8-Released.html). It used to work for me under Windows XP 32-bit. Now I have Windows 7 x64, and downloaded, installed and ran it. Configuration and settings page is fine. But it does not seem to actually register any shell extension. Nothing is added to Explorer windows, menus or property pages when selecting .mkv or .mks files). I tried calling the register hook manually using regsvr32.dll, that again invoked the configuration window and let me set all options, and when confirming even said the registration succeeded, but seems to have had no effect. In the registry I cannot find any traces of the shell extension being installed. Can this extension be made to work under Windows 7 or x64 systems? Are there known problems with installing this or other old shell extensions on x64, or on Windows 7?
