  • Should I read Kochan's "Programming in C" (10 years old) [on hold]

    - by notypist
I plan on learning Obj-C and so I decided to do it by the book and learn C first. The problem: S.G. Kochan's highly acclaimed book "Programming in C" (3rd edition) is almost ten years old now1. I really want to get started and everywhere I looked this seemed like the book for beginners with an assumed zero-knowledge in programming2. So, should I buy it or not? 1: A 4th edition is available to preorder but it's only due in March, 2014! 2: I know some HTML, CSS, and a tiny bit of PHP.

  • Windows 8 Apps with HTML5 and JavaScript

    - by Stephen.Walther
Last week, I finished writing Windows 8 Apps with HTML5 and JavaScript – Yikes! That is a long title. This book is all about writing apps for Windows 8 which can be added to the Windows Store. The book focuses on building apps using HTML5 and JavaScript. If you are already comfortable building websites, then building Windows Store apps is not a huge leap.  I explain how you can create productivity apps, like a Task List app, and games, like a simple arcade game. I also explain how you can publish your app to the Windows Store and make money. To celebrate the release of Windows 8, my publisher is offering a huge 40% discount on the book until November 30, 2012. If you want to take advantage of this discount, follow the link below and enter the discount code WINDEV40 during checkout. http://www.informit.com/promotions/promotion.aspx?promo=139036&walther So what’s in the book?  Here’s an overview of each of the chapters: Chapter 1 – Building Windows Store Apps Contains a walkthrough of creating a super simple Windows app for taking pictures from your webcam. Explains how to publish your app to the Windows Store. Chapter 2 – WinJS Fundamentals Provides an overview of the Windows Library for JavaScript which is the Microsoft library for creating Windows Store apps with JavaScript. Chapter 3 – Observables, Bindings, and Templates You learn how to display a list of items using a template. For example, you learn how to create a template which can be used to display a list of products. Chapter 4 – Using WinJS Controls Overview of the core set of JavaScript controls included with the WinJS library. You learn how to use the Tooltip, ToggleSwitch, Rating, DatePicker, TimePicker, and FlipView controls. Chapter 5 – Creating Forms This chapter explains how to take advantage of HTML5 forms to display specialized keyboards and perform form validation. Chapter 6 – Menus and Flyouts You learn how to display popups, menus, and toolbars using the JavaScript controls included with the WinJS library. Chapter 7 – Using the ListView Control This entire chapter is devoted to the ListView control which is the most important control in the WinJS library. You can use the ListView control to display, sort, filter, and edit a list of items. Chapter 8 – Creating Data Sources Learn how to use a ListView control to display data from the file system, a web service, and IndexedDB. Chapter 9 – App Events and States This chapter explains the standard application events which are raised in a Windows Store app such as the activated and checkpoint events. You also learn how to build apps which adapt automatically to different view states such as portrait and landscape. Chapter 10 – Page Fragments and Navigation This chapter discusses two subjects: You learn how to create custom WinJS controls with Page Controls and you learn how to build apps with multiple pages.  Chapter 11 – Using the Live Connect API Learn how to use Windows Live Services to authenticate users, interact with SkyDrive, and retrieve user profile information (such as a user’s birthday or profile picture). Chapter 12 – Graphics and Games This chapter is devoted to building the Brain Eaters app which is a simple arcade game. Navigate a maze and eat all of the food pellets while avoiding the brain-eating zombies to win the game. Learn how to create the game using HTML5 Canvas.   If you want to buy the book, remember to use the magic discount code WINDEV40 and visit the following link: http://www.informit.com/promotions/promotion.aspx?promo=139036&walther

  • SQL SERVER – Puzzle #1 – Querying Pattern Ranges and Wild Cards

    - by Pinal Dave
Note: Read at the end of the blog post how you can get five Joes 2 Pros Book #1 and a surprise gift. I have been blogging for almost 7 years and every other day I receive questions about Querying Pattern Ranges. The most common way to solve the problem is to use Wild Cards. However, not everyone knows how to use wild card properly. SQL Queries 2012 Joes 2 Pros Volume 1 – The SQL Queries 2012 Hands-On Tutorial for Beginners Book On Amazon | Book On Flipkart Learn SQL Server get all the five parts combo kit Kit on Amazon | Kit on Flipkart Many people know wildcards are great for finding patterns in character data. There are also some special sequences with wildcards that can give you even more power. This series from SQL Queries 2012 Joes 2 Pros® Volume 1 will show you some of these cool tricks. All supporting files are available with a free download from the www.Joes2Pros.com web site. This example is from the SQL 2012 series Volume 1 in the file SQLQueries2012Vol1Chapter2.2Setup.sql. If you need help setting up then look in the “Free Videos” section on Joes2Pros under “Getting Started” called “How to install your labs” Querying Pattern Ranges The % wildcard character represents any number of characters of any length. Let’s find all first names that end in the letter ‘A’. By using the percentage ‘%’ sign with the letter ‘A’, we achieve this goal using the code sample below: SELECT * FROM Employee WHERE FirstName LIKE '%A' To find all FirstName values beginning with the letters ‘A’ or ‘B’ we can use two predicates in our WHERE clause, by separating them with the OR statement. Finding names beginning with an ‘A’ or ‘B’ is easy and this works fine until we want a larger range of letters as in the example below for ‘A’ thru ‘K’: SELECT * FROM Employee WHERE FirstName LIKE 'A%' OR FirstName LIKE 'B%' OR FirstName LIKE 'C%' OR FirstName LIKE 'D%' OR FirstName LIKE 'E%' OR FirstName LIKE 'F%' OR FirstName LIKE 'G%' OR FirstName LIKE 'H%' OR FirstName LIKE 'I%' OR FirstName LIKE 'J%' OR FirstName LIKE 'K%' The previous query does find FirstName values beginning with the letters ‘A’ thru ‘K’. However, when a query requires a large range of letters, the LIKE operator has an even better option. Since the first letter of the FirstName field can be ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’, ‘E’, ‘F’, ‘G’, ‘H’, ‘I’, ‘J’ or ‘K’, simply list all these choices inside a set of square brackets followed by the ‘%’ wildcard, as in the example below: SELECT * FROM Employee WHERE FirstName LIKE '[ABCDEFGHIJK]%' A more elegant example of this technique recognizes that all these letters are in a continuous range, so we really only need to list the first and last letter of the range inside the square brackets, followed by the ‘%’ wildcard allowing for any number of characters after the first letter in the range. Note: A predicate that uses a range will not work with the ‘=’ operator (equals sign). It will neither raise an error, nor produce a result set. --Bad query (will not error or return any records) SELECT * FROM Employee WHERE FirstName = '[A-K]%' Question: You want to find all first names that start with the letters A-M in your Customer table and end with the letter Z. Which SQL code would you use? a. SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE FirstName LIKE 'm%z' b. SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE FirstName LIKE 'a-m%z' c. SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE FirstName LIKE 'a-m%z' d. SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE FirstName LIKE '[a-m]%z' e. SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE FirstName LIKE '[a-m]z%' f. SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE FirstName LIKE '[a-m]%z' g. SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE FirstName LIKE '[a-m]z%' Contest Leave a valid answer before June 18, 2013 in the comment section. 5 winners will be selected from all the valid answers and will receive Joes 2 Pros Book #1. 1 Lucky person will get a surprise gift from Joes 2 Pros. The contest is open for all the countries where Amazon ships the book (USA, UK, Canada, India and many others). Special Note: Read all the options before you provide valid answer as there is a small trick hidden in answers. • Reduce weight in healthy way - Day 2

    - by krnites
My second day of reducing weight and it seems most of the blog are correct in saying that you can reduce weight if your calorie consumption is less than what you burn. In one day I have lost 1 lbs without doing anything. My current weight is 177.4 lbs. Yesterday I ate small portion of dinner that I used to eat that also around 7 PM. Normally I eat my dinner around 10 PM and withing 2 hour of eating I go for sleep, but yesterday I ate around 7 PM and went for sleep only after 12.On my second day I have eaten noodles and 3 eggs in breakfast and sesame chicken ( I love it) and fried rice in lunch, I still have not gone for running but had plan to go for running and then swimming. I hope it will at least burn the calories that I had taken. On some site it was written that a normal men body needs around 2000 Calorie a day. So if I am eating less than 2000 calorie ( noodles + 3 eggs = 400+200, rice + sesame chicken = 1300, total = 1900) and burning around 300 calorie, my total calorie intake will be 1600 which is less than what my body needs. So most probably by tomorrow I should come under 176 lb bracket.Apart from counting the calorie that I am taking in everyday and approx number of calorie that I am burning everyday, I had also starting tracking my physical activities on my mobile. I have got a beautiful Samsung Focus S Windows 7.5 mobile. And after browsing through the market I have downloaded couple of health Apps.1. 6 Week training - this has set of exercise and lets you choose the number of sets you want to do for all exercise. Its focus on your core muscles.2. Fast food Calories - This apps has all the fast food chain listed and give the calorie count of each of the food item available on there menu. Like for Burger King's French Fries Large (Salted) contains 500 Calorie.3. Gym Pocket Guide - Contains instructions for different kind of exercise and tells a right way of doing them.4.  RunSat - kind of GPS based application. Its mark the distance you have run, shows the path you have taken on a map, total calorie burnt, laps completed. I love this apps.5. Stop Watch I also have noticed that If I am running in GYM and have television in front of me where a movie or serial is going on which I like,  I normally didn't notice the time. Most of the time running on treadmill is very boring, but if some music video is playing or some kind of sitcom is going, I can run for  a hour or half.So on day 2 I have lost 1 lbs and had learnt that calorie intake should be less then calorie burnt for a given day.

  • At which architecture level are you running BDD tests (e.g. Cucumber)

    - by Pete
I have in the last year gotten quite fond of using SpecFlow (which is a .NET port of Cucumber) I have used it both to test a ASP.NET MVC application at the web layer, i.e. using browser automation, but also at the controller layer. The first gives me a higher confidence in the correctness of the application, because JavaScript is tested, and improper controller configuration is also caught. But those tests are slower to execute, and more complex to implement, than those just testing on the controller layer. My tests are full functional tests, i.e. they exercise all layers of the application, all the way down to the database. So the first thing before any scenario is that the database is cleared of data, allowing the test to assume that only data specified in the "Given" block exists. Then I see example on how to use it, where they test just exercise the model layer. So what are your experiences with these tools? Which layer of the application do you test?

  • I'm having trouble understanding these exercises wording.

    - by KasHKoW
Exercise 1-20. Write a program detab that replaces tabs in the input with the proper number of blanks to space to the next tab stop. Assume a fixed set of tab stops, say every n columns. Should n be a variable or a symbolic parameter? Exercise 1-21. Write a program entab that replaces strings of blanks by the minimum number of tabs and blanks to achieve the same spacing. Use the same tab stops as for detab. When either a tab or a single blank would suffice to reach a tab stop, which should be given preference? could you paraphrase these for me. thanks

  • Dependency Injection Introduction

    - by MarkPearl
I recently was going over a great book called “Dependency Injection in .Net” by Mark Seeman. So far I have really enjoyed the book and would recommend anyone looking to get into DI to give it a read. Today I thought I would blog about the first example Mark gives in his book to illustrate some of the benefits that DI provides. The ones he lists are Late binding Extensibility Parallel Development Maintainability Testability To illustrate some of these benefits he gives a HelloWorld example using DI that illustrates some of the basic principles. It goes something like this… class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var writer = new ConsoleMessageWriter(); var salutation = new Salutation(writer); salutation.Exclaim(); Console.ReadLine(); } } public interface IMessageWriter { void Write(string message); } public class ConsoleMessageWriter : IMessageWriter { public void Write(string message) { Console.WriteLine(message); } } public class Salutation { private readonly IMessageWriter _writer; public Salutation(IMessageWriter writer) { _writer = writer; } public void Exclaim() { _writer.Write("Hello World"); } }   If you had asked me a few years ago if I had thought this was a good approach to solving the HelloWorld problem I would have resounded “No”. How could the above be better than the following…. class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Hello World"); Console.ReadLine(); } }  Today, my mind-set has changed because of the pain of past programs. So often we can look at a small snippet of code and make judgements when we need to keep in mind that we will most probably be implementing these patterns in projects with hundreds of thousands of lines of code and in projects that we have tests that we don’t want to break and that’s where the first solution outshines the latter. Let’s see if the first example achieves some of the outcomes that were listed as benefits of DI. Could I test the first solution easily? Yes… We could write something like the following using NUnit and RhinoMocks… [TestFixture] public class SalutationTests { [Test] public void ExclaimWillWriteCorrectMessageToMessageWriter() { var writerMock = MockRepository.GenerateMock<IMessageWriter>(); var sut = new Salutation(writerMock); sut.Exclaim(); writerMock.AssertWasCalled(x => x.Write("Hello World")); } }   This would test the existing code fine. Let’s say we then wanted to extend the original solution so that we had a secure message writer. We could write a class like the following… public class SecureMessageWriter : IMessageWriter { private readonly IMessageWriter _writer; private readonly string _secretPassword; public SecureMessageWriter(IMessageWriter writer, string secretPassword) { _writer = writer; _secretPassword = secretPassword; } public void Write(string message) { if (_secretPassword == "Mark") { _writer.Write(message); } else { _writer.Write("Unauthenticated"); } } }   And then extend our implementation of the program as follows… class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var writer = new SecureMessageWriter(new ConsoleMessageWriter(), "Mark"); var salutation = new Salutation(writer); salutation.Exclaim(); Console.ReadLine(); } }   Our application has now been successfully extended and yet we did very little code change. In addition, our existing tests did not break and we would just need add tests for the extended functionality. Would this approach allow parallel development? Well, I am in two camps on parallel development but with some planning ahead of time it would allow for it as you would simply need to decide on the interface signature and could then have teams develop different sections programming to that interface. So,this was really just a quick intro to some of the basic concepts of DI that Mark introduces very successfully in his book. I am hoping to blog about this further as I continue through the book to list some of the more complex implementations of containers.

  • Error data: line 2 column 1 when using pycurl with gzip stream

    - by Sagar Hatekar
Thanks for reading. Background: I am trying to read a streaming API feed that returns data in JSON format, and then storing this data to a pymongo collection. The streaming API requires a "Accept-Encoding" : "Gzip" header. What's happening: Code fails on json.loads and outputs - Extra data: line 2 column 1 - line 4 column 1 (char 1891 - 5597) (Refer Error Log below) This does NOT happen while parsing every JSON object - it happens at random. My guess is I am encountering some weird JSON object after every "x" proper JSON objects. I did reference how to use pycurl if requested data is sometimes gzipped, sometimes not? and Encoding error while deserializing a json object from Google but so far have been unsuccessful at resolving this error. Could someone please help me out here? Error Log: Note: The raw dump of the JSON object below is basically using the repr() method. • How do I start a second console application in Visual Studio when one is already running

    - by Kettenbach
Hi All, I am working through some examples in a WCF book. There is a Host project and Client project within a single solution. Both are console applications. The Host is the startup app, but the Client app doesn't seem to open the Console like the book says. Book says while the Host is running, run the Client. The Run button is disabled tho as it is already running. The book example definitely has them in the same solution and a single instance of Visual Studio. Anyways, what am I missing here? I have done this with two instances of VS, but I truly have never does this in a single instance. Any help is always appreciated. Cheers, ~ck in San Diego

  • CSLA.net - Inheritable Base classes

    - by JMSA
I was reading the book "Expert C# 2005 Business Objects". The book describes various base classes to be inherited by various classes to solve real-world problems. But the book does not provide examples of all those classes. Can anyone give me all of those examples (with reason) to better understand CSLA? For example, Which real-world objects are to be considered as Read-only Root Objects (Student/Product/Order, etc.)? And Why?

  • c# XML add an XML node as a child to a particular other node

    - by kacalapy
I have an XML doc with a structure like this: <Book> <Title title="Door Three"/> <Author name ="Patrick"/> </Book> <Book> <Title title="Light"/> <Author name ="Roger"/> </Book> I want to be able to melodramatically add XML nodes to this XML in a particular place. Lets say I wanted to add a Link node as a child to the author node where the name is Roger. I think it's best if the function containing this logic is passed a param for the name to add an XML node under, please advise and what's the code I need to add XML nodes to a certain place in the XML? Now I am using .AppendChild() method but it doesn't allow for me to specify a parent node to add under...

  • Handling FormatExceptions using XmlSerializer.Deserialize

    - by qntmfred
I have a third party web service that returns this xml <book> <release_date>0000-00-00</release_date> </book> I am trying to deserialize it into this class public class Book { [XmlElement("release_date")] public DateTime ReleaseDate { get; set; } } But because 0000-00-00 isn't a valid DateTime, I get a FormatException. What's the best way to handle this?

  • Problem with WPF Data Binding Defined in Code Not Updating UI Elements

    - by Ben
I need to define new UI Elements as well as data binding in code because they will be implemented after run-time. Here is a simplified version of what I am trying to do. Data Model: public class AddressBook : INotifyPropertyChanged { private int _houseNumber; public int HouseNumber { get { return _houseNumber; } set { _houseNumber = value; NotifyPropertyChanged("HouseNumber"); } } public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; protected void NotifyPropertyChanged(string sProp) { if (PropertyChanged != null) { PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(sProp)); } } } Binding in Code: AddressBook book = new AddressBook(); book.HouseNumber = 123; TextBlock tb = new TextBlock(); Binding bind = new Binding("HouseNumber"); bind.Source = book; bind.Mode = BindingMode.OneWay; tb.SetBinding(TextBlock.TextProperty, bind); // Text block displays "123" myGrid.Children.Add(tb); book.HouseNumber = 456; // Text block displays "123" but PropertyChanged event fires When the data is first bound, the text block is updated with the correct house number. Then, if I change the house number in code later, the book's PropertyChanged event fires, but the text block is not updated. Can anyone tell me why? Thanks, Ben

  • Design Patters in Rails

    - by Winston
I remember, I have a GoF book back in college about design patterns which helped me a lot with my C and C++ programming, since my jump ship to Rails I was trying to use those design patterns I learned previously, Rails is a relatively new paradigm to me, plurals, verbs, REST, DRY.. Can you give me a recommended book for Rails that I can easily understand what I previously learned back in College. P.S. I suspect Matz knew about the GoF book, and applied it on Ruby... :-)

  • Display/Edit fields across tables in a Django Form

    - by jamida
I have 2 tables/models, which for all practical purposes are the same as the standard Author/Book example, but with the additional restriction that in my application each Author can only write 0 or 1 books. (eg, the ForeignKey field in the Book model is or can be a OneToOneField, and there may be authors who have no corresponding book in the Book table.) I would like to be able to display a form showing multiple books and also show some fields from the corresponding Author table (eg author_name, author_address). I followed the example of the inlineformset and but that doesn't even display the author name in the generated form.

  • What some good books on software testing/quality?

    - by mjh2007
I'm looking for a good book on software quality. It would be helpful if the book covered: The software development process (requirements, design, coding, testing, maintenance) Testing roles (who performs each step in the process) Testing methods (white box and black box) Testing levels (unit testing, integration testing, etc) Testing process (Agile, waterfall, spiral) Testing tools (simulators, fixtures, and reporting software) Testing of embedded systems The goal here is to find an easy to read book that summarizes the best practices for ensuring software quality in an embedded system. It seems most texts cover the testing of application software where it is simpler to generate automated test cases or run a debugger. A book that provided solutions for improving quality in a system where the tests must be performed manually and therefore minimized would be ideal.

  • ibatis problem using <isNull> whilst iterating over a List

    - by onoma
Hi, I'm new to iBatis and I'm struggling with the and elements. I want to iterate over a List of Book instances (say) that are passed in as a HashMap: MyParameters. The list will be called listOfBooks. The clause of the overall SQL statement will therefore look like this: <iterate prepend="AND" property="MyParameters.listOfBooks" conjunction="AND" open="(" close=")"> ... </iterate> I also need to produce different SQL within the iterate elements depending on whether a property of each Book instance in the 'listOfBooks' List is null, or not. So, I need a statement something like this: <iterate prepend="AND" property="MyParameters.listOfBooks" conjunction="AND" open="(" close=")"> <isNull property="MyParameter.listOfBooks.title"> <!-- SQL clause #1 here --> </isNull> <isNotNull property="MyParameter.listOfBooks.title"> <!-- SQL clause #2 here --> </isNotNull> When I do this I get an error message stating that there is no "READABLE" property named 'title' in my Book class. However, each Book instance does contain a title property, so I'm confused! I can only assuem that I have managled the syntax in trying to pinpoint the title of particular Book instance in listOfBooks. I'm struggling to find the correct technique for trying to achieve this. If anyone can advise a way forward I'd be grateful. Thanks

  • Which are the good ASP.NET MVC 2 books?

    - by Dan Dumitru
I'm sorry for asking yet another "best [insert-technology] book". I know a bit of MVC, I want to start a project in MVC 2 and a good book would be really helpful. Usually, after a while, people come to a consensus what are the top 2-3 books for learning a given technology. Have you read any ASP.NET MVC 2 book?
