I'm about to hold a course for learning Linux. I'd like the participants to see what keys and key combinations I press. Is there anything like Mouseposé for Linux?
Hi,
We are organizing a Linux 101 Workshop for undergrad and grad students. Can you share some ideas/topics that are must for people who are just starting with Linux.
Preconditions: No knowledge of Linux OS, philosophy and technical aspects (kernel, shell, commands)
Post conditions: A basic crash course of Linux which will give them a good start and answer some basic questions asked on it.
I'd like to display an RSS feed (updating dynamically of course) on my Windows 7 desktop. The posts I've read about Windows 7 RSS backgrounds are all about displaying various background images delivered via RSS. What I'm looking for would be similar to the Windows XP/95 Active Desktop feature which allowed for web pages to be presented on the desktop background.
I want to install Python 2.6, but as it's still experimental for Debian Unix, I'm wondering what might best course of action is. Is the right idea to idea it into /usr/local for my system and then update the python sym link in /usr/bin to point to that version? Other considerations or ways to do it I should be thinking about?
I have an ECS P4M800PRO-M478 motherboard and I'm just setting up the jumpers right now, of which there are only two sets. One is the CLR_CMOS jumper, which is set to Normal, of course. However, there is another set called BIOS_WP which controls whether BIOS flash writing is protected or unprotected. Which setting should I have it set at and would this affect any BIOS flashes in the future?
I am looking for a free, online-based accounting application, something like a web-version of QuickBooks or MS Money.
The catch here is that, of course, it needs to be free. I don't know if any company is philanthropic enough to offer this kind of service to individual users.
I use Ubuntu 9.10, and the MiniSD card shows as having the space used as if there were files.
Baobab (the disk usage analyzer) shows that the card only has 118 MB used (of the 401 Ubuntu claims there are).
Of course, I already tried the obvious (rebooting the phone, adding and removing files, etc.), but I don't want to format my card, because I still have some files on it, the transfer to my computer is slow, and because I use an old wire it fails often.
In my site I have one folder that does not allow anonymous access. It is set up to use Integrated Windows Authentication as it is on an AD domain. The login works fine in Firefox, Chrome, even Safari, but not IE8. Has anyone encountered this before? I can't seem to find anyone else with a similar issue, except for where the login fails in all browsers of course.
Few days ago, I click on Most Visited, right click Facebook and select Forget about this site. Of course, all of my history, bookmarks and 6 saved passwords are gone
Yesterday, I installed LassPass add-on, and only import Firefox saved password
When I open Firefox, goto Facebook, all of my 6 password are appeared
So, my question is, when I select Forget about this site, did Firefox remove my passwords completely?
When explicitly specifying identity file to ssh:
ssh -i ./id_rsa ...
I have these lines in ssh debug trace:
debug1: Offering public key: ./id_rsa
debug3: send_pubkey_test
debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply
Does it mean ssh-generated id_rsa contains public RSA exponent as well, or ssh is sending out my private key? (which, of course, does not make sense). id_rsa format seems to be rather explicit that it contains private key with its "BEGIN PRIVATE KEY" block.
There is huge number of different formats for virtual storage files for desktop and server purposes (vmdk, qcow2, vdi, vdk, etc.). I'm writing a little script for manipulating them and would like the script to be able to distinguish between them.
Of course, it can be done via extension, but I want this to be more reliable. I tried commands file or qemu-img, but the results are not quite clear. Any idea improving my methods?
I am taking a course in ancient Greek, and there are various accents that go above the vowels. I want to be able to type these on Ubuntu.
For example, if I hit ';', then 'a' (while in the modern Greek keyboard layout), I get this character: ?. However, I can't figure out how to add the other accents (` and ^, for example).
I switch between using tortoise git and cmd line git on cygwin very frequently, and lately I've noticed that when I git status via cygwin and no changes are found, then I go to use tortoise git, and right click on a repo then use the "Git Commit - ..." menu item, I get a list of files that have supposedly changed, but of course when review the diff there are no changes to the file contents, it's actually the file permissions which appear to be changed, which git via cygwin does not recognize.
So what is wrong with my tortoise git setup?
I want one product to cover for Anti-virus & Firewall purposes. The product should also be lightweight and of course designed for windows server. Any suggestions?
Note: I don't need an enterprise solution for the clients - only for the server.
BTW, I currently using Symantec SEP, but it's too heavy (during weekly scans) for the server to handle and is not designed for server purposes.
In a particularly nerdy Facebook status update I mentioned that I had flashed my BIOS. One of my friends asked what the BIOS is.
My question is: How do you explain what the BIOS is and does to a layperson? (Hint: "The BIOS is the basic input/output system" is not going to be accepted as the answer.)
(Of course, the real question is "does she like me?", but I'm not sure there's a site for this :-p )
Is there a function of MS Word that enables users to solve basic math problems, in this case addition or subtraction? I use its platform for a budget and of course I could just use a calculator but it would be more convenient if I could solve it all in one place.
For instance:
(6.75 + 12.65 + 27.35)
Sorry for the simplicity of this question. Wondering if MS Word had a functionality like this of some sort?
Hello.
How do I setup sendmail so that it does not apply dnsbl to authenticated SMTP users? One of our offices is using wireless internet and of course it's widely used by spammers. So, all of it's dynamic Ips already blacklisted by SpamHaus.
I'm having a problem with a windows server 2008 server. After it was demoted from a AD domain controller, it is unable to get to the login screen (it reboots after applying user settings).
Is there a way to recover files from this system via something like a windows live CD, or of course fix this issue?
I have a web server with apache 2.0 installed. It comes with Zend Server install pack.
When I’m trying to debug my php files apache serves a blank page with 503 service unavailable.
Of course slow server-side code is tying up Apache requests for far too long, but I need it to wait, until my debugging comes to end.
How can I solve this problem.
What are the best websites for wallpapers?
My current favorite is http://interfacelift.com.
Do you guys have a single source where you get all your wallpapers or do you just stumble on them on the web?

I'm having strange problem with my putty console. I'm establishing connection over ssh to my home computer [ windows 7 + freesshd server ]. Everything works just fine, but I'm getting this tiny screen with output, I can resize it of course, but the content is still in small box [ content doesn't resize ]
I've tried to change the number of columns and rows in properties, but it didn't change anything. The same thing is with cygwin client.
I get error 10048.
and this in event history:
The SQL server service terminated with server-specific error. Only one usage of each socket (protcol/network address/port) is normall permitted. Any idea howto fix this ? Port set is the default 1433... If this is turned off, which is default of course, SQL service starts like a champ. I have done this config many times on other servers with no problem.
Of course it's not quite this easy, but are there steps for doing this sort of thing? It's a long story but I was dual-booting linux and had a system meltdown of sorts. As such, my Windows bootloader has been erased and I cannot boot into that OS. I do, however, have a linux live-usb through which I have access to my drives.
Is there anyway to make use of this recovery partition and boot from itto re-install Windows?
When trying to install SQL Server 2008 Developer and Enterprise editions on a Windows 7 box I've got this message:
Rule "Restart computer" failed.
A computer restart is required. You must restart this computer before installing SQL Server.
Of course I already restarted 10 times.
I've found a post in a forum saying that I should clear
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations
but I don't have such a key.
After some work on my computer, perhaps some updates installs, it didn't boot anymore. BSOD on windows logo loading. After some research I've found out that if I replace the SYSTEM hive of the register with the last backup it boots ok, but of course goes back to an old stage of machine setup. So my question is: where does register stores hardware and/or updates/software that loads in the machine boot, so that I can check which program is producing that BSOD and disable it?
System is Win 7 64 bits SP1
