  • Log4net 1.2.10 running on .NET 1.1 and 2.0 not compatible

    I have old code that uses log4net version 1.2.10 targeted for the .NET 1.1 platform. My current code uses lognet version 1.2.10 targeted for the .NET 2.0 platform When I mix the old and new code all hell breaks loose. Code written today on .NET 4.0 and VS2010 can use the 2.0 log4net dll just fine. but if I put in the 1.1 version, it breaks. Conversely, the old dlls will break if I use the 2.0 log4net dll. I do not want to force my old dlls onto 2.0. Is there a good solution? I guess what bugs me most is that the log4net has the same version number, but I cannot fool my code and dlls into working with a single version.

  • What's the "right" way to get Win32 p/Invoke declarations?

    I typically use the site http://www.pinvoke.net/ to grab a DllImport declaration whenever I need to call a Win32 API, and I've noticed it's the de facto standard response on Stack Overflow to API interop questions. Is this what "everyone" does? Is there a better way? Does Microsoft offer an alternative? e.g. a tool that reads .h files and outputs an assembly. Why aren't there some standard assemblies that just expose all the Win32 APIs? What would be the barrier to creating them and using them, as an alternative to a site like pinvoke.net?

  • EXCEL import to sql returning NULL for decimals when in VARCHAR data type

    Hi, I am working on a peice of software which has expodentially grown over the last few years and the database needs to be regularly updated. Customers are providing us with data now on large spreadsheets which we format and will start importing into the database. I am using the Import and Export Data (32-bit) Wizard. One column in the database contains values like '1.1.1.2' etc and i am importing them in as a Varchar as that is the data type in the database. However, for values like '8.5', 'NULL' is getting imported insead. It only occurs when there is one decimal point. Is this a formatting error with excel or is it the wrong datatype?

  • Can the lock function be used to implement thread-safe enumeration?

    I'm working on a thread-safe collection that uses Dictionary as a backing store. In C# you can do the following: private IEnumerable<KeyValuePair<K, V>> Enumerate() { if (_synchronize) { lock (_locker) { foreach (var entry in _dict) yield return entry; } } else { foreach (var entry in _dict) yield return entry; } } The only way I've found to do this in F# is using Monitor, e.g.: let enumerate() = if synchronize then seq { System.Threading.Monitor.Enter(locker) try for entry in dict -> entry finally System.Threading.Monitor.Exit(locker) } else seq { for entry in dict -> entry } Can this be done using the lock function? Or, is there a better way to do this in general? I don't think returning a copy of the collection for iteration will work because I need absolute synchronization.

  • What's the best way to set cursor/caret position?

    If I'm inserting content into a textarea that TinyMCE has co-opted, what's the best way to set the position of the cursor/caret? I'm using tinyMCE.execCommand("mceInsertRawHTML", false, content); to insert the content, and I'd like set the cursor position to the end of the content. Both document.selection and myField.selectionStart won't work for this, and I feel as though this is going to be supported by TinyMCE (through something I can't find on their forum) or it's going to be a really ugly hack. Later: It gets better; I just figured out that, when you load TinyMCE in WordPress, it loads the entire editor in an embedded iframe. Later (2): I can use document.getElementById('content_ifr').contentDocument.getSelection(); to get the selection as a string, but not a Selection Object that I can use getRangeAt(0) on. Making progress little by little.

  • Counting vowels in a string using recursion

    In my python class we are learning about recursion. I understand that it's when a function calls itself, however for this particular assignment I can't figure out how exactly to get my function to call it self to get the desired results. I need to simply count the vowels in the string given to the function. def recVowelCount(s): 'return the number of vowels in s using a recursive computation' vowelcount = 0 vowels = "aEiou".lower() if s[0] in vowels: vowelcount += 1 else: ??? I'm really not sure where to go with this, it's quite frustrating.   • Create an Edit view similar to Contacts App

    I have an edit view in my app which is a instance of UITableViewController and contains one cell with a textfield in a grouped table. At the moment this cell is at the top of the screen and is firstResponder so they keyboard is visible as well. But in all the Apples apps like the Contacts App when you edit a piece of information like an Email it buts both of its rows in the middle between the Nav Bar and the Keyboard not at the top of the screen.     My form is submitted by a link using JavaScript, but I am also trying to validate the from justing jQuery validate. The validation doesn't work when submitted by the link, but it does if I change the link to a submit button. What am I doing wrong?     Yesterday I was thinking about whether it would be possible to use the convenience of C++1x lambda functions to write callbacks for Windows API functions. For example, what if I wanted to use a lambda as an EnumChildProc with EnumChildWindows? Something like: EnumChildWindows(hTrayWnd, CALLBACK [](HWND hWnd, LPARAM lParam) { // ... return static_cast<BOOL>(TRUE); // continue enumerating }, reinterpret_cast<LPARAM>(&myData)); Another use would be to write extern "C" callbacks for C routines.     Hi, considering I have experience with Java SE: which language should I learn(and is best for that purpose) in order to build web applications some day with it? I have been contemplating PHP and Java EE. The latter does indeed seems as an obvious choice given my Java SE knowledge. But how does it fares in comparison with PHP and how good is it for the aforementioned purpose? If there is a better language for this purpose, feel free to recommend it. Thank you.

  • A few problems with Delphi involving Mail Merge, SQL + Databases.

    My first problem is with mail merge. I have created a a Data File and a table, yet I am not able to fill my table with information from my Data File. The << just seems to be inserted after wherever the cursor is on the page, which is not where the table is. All that is entered into the actual table is a '59'. Therefore I think I either need to to change the code or be able to move the cursor. The third problem is that when I add a new column to my database manually (which I need to do) I get a 'violation' error in one of my units when I activate an ADOTable. This only happens on one unit and it happens when I add a column with any name anywhere in the table. I know that is vague but I can't seem to narrow down the problem any further than that.   • Re-authentication required for registered-path links (to ASP.NET site) coming to IE from PowerPoint

    We're using URL routing based on Phil Haack's example, with config modifications based on MSDN Library article #CC668202, to provide "shareable" links for a ASP.NET forms site, and have run into a strange issue: For users attempting to open links from PowerPoint presentations, and who have IE set as their default browser, using one of these links forces (forms-based) re-authentication, even in the same browser instance with a live session. Info: We know the session is still alive. (Page returns information for the currently logged-in user; confirmed via debug watches) This doesn't happen with other browsers (FF, Chrome) or with other programs (Notepad++) as the URL source. We do not have a default path set, as this caused issues with root path handling at initial login. This primarily happens with PowerPoint, but will also happen in Word and OCS. On some machines, even after changing the default browser, Office apps will continue to use IE for these links, forcing this error. (A potential registry fix for this failed, but even if it had worked, we can't control default browser choice for our users.) We can't figure out if this is an Office oddity or is being caused by our decision to use app-level URL routing (rather than IIS rewriting). Has anyone else encountered this and found a solution?

  • Consequences in PHP of implementing an interface through two different routes?

    What are the consequences of implementing the same interface through two different routes in PHP, are there any? What I mean, is something like this: interface baseInterface {} abstract class baseClass implements baseInterface { } interface myInterface extends baseInterface {} class myClass extends baseClass implements myInterface {} In this case myClass implements baseInterface from two different parents - myInterface and baseClass. Are there any consequences to this? My instinct is that PHP should handle this fine, but I just want to make sure. What exactly does PHP do in this case? Does it just check to see that the necessary functions are implemented for the interface each time it discovers it and call it a day or does it do something more?

    Lion's Commentary on Unix Sixth Edition with Source Code is a wonderful book to learn how to read code. Reading code is important -- how does one learn how to write excellent code without having read excellent code? But, sadly, while great writers, of fiction and non-fiction, all spend a great deal of time reading stuff, we, programmers, seem to avoid it like the plague. Worse still, programming books usually go the same way. They might show a pattern or a style, but they often avoid showing good, complex code, and helping one go through it. There are exceptions, of course. I hope. So, with that in mind, what books are to be found which help one learn how to read code?

  • Move to php in windows? Concern, hints, "please don't do!"?

    I am considering to move frome Microsoft languages to PHP (just for web dev) which has quite an interesting syntax, a perlish look (but a wider programmer base) and it allows me to reuse the web without reinventing it. I have some concerns too. I would be more than happy to gather some wisdom from stackoverflow community, (challenge to my opinions warmly welcome). Here are my doubts. Efficiency. Cgi are slow, what I am supposed to use? Fastcgi? Or what else? Efficiency + stability. Is PHP on windows really stable and a good choice in terms of performances? Database. I use very often MSSQL (I regret, i like it). Could I widely and efficiently interface PHP with MSSQL (using smartly stored pro, for example). XSLT + XML performance. I work quite a lot with XML and XSLT and I really find the MS xml parser a great software component. Are parser used in PHP fast, reliable and efficient (I am interested mainly in DOM, not SAX)? Objects. Is the PHP object programming model valid end efficient? 6 Regex. How efficient is PHP processing regexp? Many thanks for your advices.

  • I have a serious problem to use 'happle' in xcode project.

    Hello. I am a korean student, and I'm trying to develop a iphone application. I want to make the application which will shows contents of Web board, which is belong to some website. I will use 'UITableViewController", and the names of contents have to be displayed on table view. I heard that if I want to scrap the text on webpage, I have to use 'parser'. However, Iphone SDKs provide only the parser for xml webpage, NSXmlParser. In my acknowledges, NSXmlParser is not for HTML webpage, so it doesn't provide HTML parsing. If there is any way to parse HTML page with NSXmlParser, I want to know how to use that. Anyway, I found a simple and good HTML parser, 'happle', through searching on google. I tried to add the sources of happle on my xcode project, and I also add the libxml2.2.dylib, and I even set up 'Header search paths' and 'Other Linker Flags'. However It doesn't work. The Compiler show a error message : "No such file in dictionary". In my opinion, there is no frameworks file in my computer, so I tried to set up 'libxml2 frameworks' many times, but I coundn't success. please help me how to parse HTML page and how to set up libxml2... It really urgent. p.s. please forgive my ugly English
