  • How to test/debug bad network wiring?

    I recently bought a place already wired with Cat 5E (8 ports, leading to a central closet). However attempting to get link, nothing works. On closer examination, it was obvious that the ends in the closet were wired backwards (brown on pin 1, etc). The jacks that I've pulled out of the wall do look to be correctly done. However, testing with a network cable tester shows zero link between any of the jacks and any of the ports in the closet - I had expected to just see a 1/8, 2/7, ... 8/1 mismatch, but instead get nothing at all. The runs are accessible and look neat, though they take some bends that seem quite sharp and are in some cases much longer than they need to be (the person who put this in was a professional electrician but I suspect this was the first time he ran network cabling). My best guess at this point is that he either bought bad cable, or put so much tension on it that he snapped wires. Though it seems surprising/unlikely that I wouldn't get at least one active wire on one of the 8 lines. So, my question: is there anything else I should try or test before I go ripping out everything and running new cable?

  • Need to re-build an application - how?

    For our main system, we have a small monitor application that sits outside our network and periodically tries to log in to verify the system still works. We have a problem with the monitor though in that the communications component set (Asta 3 inside Delphi applications) doesn't always connect through. Overall, I'd say it's about 95% reliable, but that other 5% kills the monitor since it will try to log in and hang on the connection attempt (no timeout in the component). This really isn't an issue on the client side of the system since the clients don't disconnect and reconnect repeatedly on the same application instance, but I need a way to make sure the monitor stays up and continues working even when the component fails on a run. I have a few ideas as to which way to have the program run, the main idea being to put the communications inside a threaded data module so that if one thread crashes then another thread can test later and the program keep going. Does this sound like a valid way to go? Any other ideas how to ensure a reliable monitoring application with a less than 100% reliable component? Thanks. P.S. Not sure these tags are the most appropriate. Tried including "system-reliability" as one, but not high enough rep to create.

    Lately I have been using Chrome, but I am starting to think I should use FF. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the various mainstream browsers (with an emphasis on Chrome and FF) when doing web development? Is it easier to start with clean code for a relatively conforming browser, and later add hacks/workarounds for acceptable display with less conforming browsers, or is it easier to work with a variety of browsers from the beginning, so we never have a page that's completely unacceptable with, for example, IE 6?

I don't need solve databases, sessions or someting else... but I need know, how to do that both server will available as www.myexample1.com

  • Build a view frustum from angles

    I have 4 angles, left, right, top & bottom. These angles are in degrees. They define the angle between the forward vector and the corresponding side.   • How do you debug why Windows is slow?

    I've got Vista Biz and when my machine chugs I think it is because of paging, but I never know how to verify this. Procexp doesn't seem to provide useful information because it appears that nothing is going on when the chugs happen. perfmon seems like it has the counters I need, but I'm never sure what counters I should add to cover the information I want. For perfmon, I prefer numbers that are percents, so I can gauge load. Here are the counters I have up, but they don't always seem to correlate to chugs: - % disk time (logical) - page faults/sec (an indicator of lots of paging activity) - processor/%priviliged time

  • How to debug high memory usage by registry?

    I have a windows 2008 r2 server running ADFS2 and some web apps that is having issues with low memory. Digging around I found that the 5.5 GB were being used under Kernel Memory (paged). Further digging with Poolmon, I discovered that the majority of that (5GB+) was being used by CM - configuration manager. Also known as the registry. I'm really now sure how to tell why the registry is using so much memory however, or how to release it? Looking at the physical registry files they don't appear that large.     Hi i just got a new notebook and it came with ubuntu 12.04 lts operation system. But it can't make a wireless connection. I plugged in my Ethernet cable and i can reach the Internet with it but I need wireless connection so much. This is the first time I'm using ubuntu so i'm really confused. I can see wireless networks (including mine) but i cannot use them. It seems like it's establishing a connection but soon it gives up. Please help, I don't have much time for this and I do not have any idea about operation systems.

  • Stuck GhostScript processes, how to debug?

    Having a problem with Ghostscript processes that don't end. This does not happen often, probably once every 3 weeks we see this issue with 1-3 processes. Running CentOS 6.4 on a VPS from Rackspace. We use PrinceXML to generate PDFs which uses GhostScript to handle fonts. Here's an image of top: http://i.stack.imgur.com/J9D7D.jpg As you can see those two processes are using a lot of resources, I haven't killed them yet in hopes someone can help me diagnose. I'm a developer not a server admin so I have a basic knowledge of *nix but no clue on how to fix this. Installed strace and ran it on each process with the following command: strace -p 20619 -s 80 -o gs.txt Left it for 5m, gs.txt is empty? Thanks in advance!
