• Determine cluster size of file system in Python

  I would like to calculate the "size on disk" of a file in Python. Therefore I would like to determine the cluster size of the file system where the file is stored. How do I determine the cluster size in Python? Or another built-in method that calculates the "size on disk" will also work. I looked at os.path.getsize but it returns the file size in bytes, not taking the FS's block size into consideration. I am hoping that this can be done in an OS independent way...

• Vista 64-bit, DISK BOOT FAILURE

  So I have this Acer Aspire AX3200-U3600A with Windows Vista (64-bit). Every night I turn it off and turn it back on in the morning. Around three weeks ago, I did a fresh factory reimage. Good as new. Then around two days ago, when I turned it on, I noticed it was running extremly slow. As in, it would often freeze up while I had multiple applications open when it usually never froze up. So I decided to restart my computer. Big mistake. My computer froze right after I clicked shut-down. I waited a while. Nothing. Waited some minutes. Nope. I decided to shut it down by pressing the power button. Here is where the problems begin. When I turned it back on, I saw the Windows logo and loading bar and then it loaded to black. I turned it off again forcefully by power button and then once more... then I got: AMD Data Change... Update New Data to DMI! then later the screen clears and I get: AHCI Option ROM BIOS Revision: 01.05.92 Date: 02-19-2008 Copyright (c) 2006-2008 Phoenix Technologies, LTD Port 01: Reset Port Error!! Port 02: then the screen clears again but this time, this loads from the bottom: Nvidia Boot Agent 249.0542 (copyright stuff... blah blah) PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable. PXE-M0F: Exiting Nvidia Boot Agent DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. So I try to go into Safe Mode. Well, first of all it doesn't load as fast. After it loads disk.sys from windows/drivers, it will wait a while (2-3 mins) THEN load. However it loads the Acer eRecovery Management Tool. I have three options: Reset computer to factory default, Restore computer from user's backup, or Exit. However, the top two options are gray and disabled where as the Exit is in blue and definitely clickable. So obviously safe mode is not there... A strong thing to note: In the beginning when all of this started, I did a Boot Windows Normal from pressing f8 and I got to my desktop! It logged me in. I could see the icons on my files. However my desktop was extremely slow as in when I clicked on the Start menu, it would wait a while, then load up the menu with JUST the gradient, no text or icons... so as you can see... it saw my HDD? Also, before anyone says, I have NO USB plugged in. My mouse and keyboard are not USB inputs, I assure you. And this came without a recovery CD AND when I went in BIOS, to change the BOOT ORDER, I did NOT see a CD-ROM option. And when I tried pressing ALT+F10 to get into Acer eRecovery Management, the top two options were disabled as well. But sometimes on start-up, I get: Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removeable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer. If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer. Status: 0xc00000e9 Info: An unexpected I/O error has occured. Then I tried Last Known Good Configuration Settings, that gives me a BSOD. What should I do/

• Save NSWindow Size on Resize & Close For User

  I've noticed that all applications on OS X seem to save the size you set it at. The next time you open it it's typically in the same position and size. I'm making an app and I've noticed that after resizing, if I launch the application again it's just the size of what I've set in Xcode 4's IB and not the size that I resized it to on launch. Do I have to manually save the window size each time its changed? Or is there an easier way to do this through IB? (My window does have a minimum size set if that changes anything.)

• How to export SQL Server data from corrupted database (with disk write error)

  IT realised there was a disk write error on our production SQL Server 2005 and hence was causing the backups to fail. By the time they had realised this the nightly backup was old, so were not able to just restore the backup on another server. The database is still running and being used constantly. However DBCC CheckDB fails. Also the SQL Server backup task fails, Copy Database fails, Export Data Wizard fails. However it seems all the data can be read from the tables (i.e using bcp etc) Another observation I have made is that the Transaction Log is nearly double the size of the Database. (Does that mean all the changes arent being written to the MDF?) What would be the best plan of attack to get the database to a state where backups are working and the data is safe? Take the database offline and use the MDF/LDF to somehow create the database on another sql server? Export the data from the database using bcp. Create the database (use the Generate Scripts function on the corrupt db to create the schema on the new db) on another sql server and use bcp again to import the data. Some other option that is the right course of action in this situation? The IT manager says the data is safe as if the server fails, the data can be restored from the mdf/ldf. I'm not sure so insisted that we start exporting the data each night as a failsafe (using bcp for example). IT are also having issues on the hardware side of things as supposedly the disk error in on a virtualized disk and can't be rebuilt like a normal raid array (or something like that). Please excuse my use of incorrect terminology and incorrect assumptions on how Sql Server operates. I'm the application developer and have been called to help (as it seems IT know less about SQL Server than I do). • Size of a class with 'this' pointer

  The size of a class with no data members is returned as 1 byte, even though there is an implicit 'this' pointer declared. Shouldn't the size returned be 4 bytes(on a 32 bit machine)? I came across articles which indicated that 'this' pointer is not counted for calculating the size of the object. But I am unable to understand the reason for this. Also, if any member function is declared virtual, the size of the class is now returned as 4 bytes. This means that the vptr is counted for calculating the size of the object. Why is the vptr considered and 'this' pointer ignored for calculating the size of object?

• Database Server Hardware components (order of importance), CPU speed VS CPU cache vs RAM vs DISK

  I am new to database world and would like to know what are crucial hardware specs when it comes to database performance. I have searched the internet and found this so far (In order of decreasing importance): 1) Hard Disk: Get an SSD basically (much more IOPS than spinners) 2) Memory: Get as much as you can afford 3) CPU: For the same $ spent, prefer larger cache size over speed. Are these findings sensible? EDIT: I would like to focus on CPU speed VS CPU cache size. EDIT2: The database is used to store some combination of ints and int arrays with few text fields. There are a lot of Select queries looking for existing entries. If entry is not found, then insert it. I would say most of processing would be trying to find a match across a table with 200 columns and 20k rows. The insert statements are very few. EDIT3: Also, we have a lot of views (basically select queries).

  HI Gurus, I have been working on SSD(solid state disk) for several months..Problems and Questions hit my head unexpectedly..Coz i am a virgin in ssd... Esp these days i was testing the write-read speed of ssd, which I was always caring.... however result turned out not good as I expected, or even worse Three kinds of read-write were implemented in my test 1. read and write directly from and into ssd, with openning ssd as a whole device. in windows: _open("\\:g", ***).. It can be very tricky and hairy that you'd write a data with size of folds of 512, at the disk position of folds of 512bytes... So, If you wanto write just a byte or 4 bytes, you'v to write at least a whole sector one time. 2. Read and write data from and into files located in SSD... 3. Read and Write data from and into files in mechanical Disk I compared the pratices below...I found ssd sucks...the ssd performs worse than mechanical disk... so i am wondering where i can get the potential performance of ssd, since ssd is said to a substitute for mechanical disk in the future.. Nevertheless, I test ssd with a pro-hard-disk tools..ssd is like twice speedier than mechanical disk. So, why? Thanx very much...If you know tips of ssd...follow me

• encfs error while decoding the data

  I have installed encfs and started using it to secure all my personal & office data and it was working absolutely fine until 2 hours back. The setup is like this. I have a folder in Copy folder called OfficeData which gets synchronized with my Copy folder When I login into the system I use the command encfs ~/Copy/OfficeData ~/Documents/OfficeData Once my work is over I dismount with the command fusermount -u ~/Documents/OfficeData All this data get synchronized with my desktop and with my mobile phone (as a backup) Today when I mounted, the folder got mounted by no directories and files present in that folder. • Filesystems for webserver with SATA and Solid State disk,

  We have just ordered a new webserver with 120 Gb solid state disk and a SATA disk. I am trying to plan ahead what sort of filesystem to use. This system will be running Linux, Apache/Tomcat to host java services. The main service is a system where people can upload reasonably large files (in the order of 100 Mb, images, image stacks and video), which people will be able to annotate and which will be sent to a database server when annotation is complete. Thus far, I plan to put most of the utility programs of the operating system om the SSD and put the large media files there. The SATA disks will hold the less volitile data like apache, tomcat and the servlets. For filesystems I have considered going for the stable EXT3 because I hear that it is best supported. The downside seems to be that it not the ideal choice for large files. That is why I am leaning towards using XFS for the SSD and EXT3 for the SATA. My questions are: 1) Does this sound like a reasonable setup? 2) What filesystems would you recommend for the SSD and for the SATA? Thanks

  Possible Duplicate: Please insert a disk into SD/MMC - Vista problem Hi I tried pushing my 2GB micro SD card using the inbuilt card reader. On clicking the drive I get "Please insert a disk into SD/MMC". This problem is really frustrating. The card works fine on other computers so does the microSD to SD attachment. I have done following o fix. - Updated Vista and installed SP1. - Updated the TI drivers for FlashDrive. - Checked Vaio site for updates (none required). - Added a new entry HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlS* et001\Services\tifm21\Parameters/SDParam=1 took the hint from (http://tinyurl.com/nk33tp) I have restarted the PC multiple times. As soon as I put the card in, the SD/MMC device icon blips, so it seems the hardware is at least detecting something. The card reader was working fine few days back. I guess some windows update has broken something, does any one have any idea on how to proceed. MY laptop is VGN-N365E.

• Kerberos service on win2k dc will not start following disk failure

  Hi, I have a win2k (mixed mode domain) with 4 DCS. One of these also acts an exchange 2000 server which uses 2 logical volumes from an MSA 2000 array. AD etc is stored on local drives. We experienced a problem last week when the raid array fell back to a redundant controller and this temporarily meant that the two logical drives were not visible to the server for around 5 minutes and a couple of reboots. The log records these Events as Type: Warning Event Source: Disk Event Category: None Event ID: 51 Date: 06/11/2009 Time: 11:46:23 User: N/A Computer: server1 Description: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation. Following these problems, the server “kerberos Key Distribution” service refuses to start with an “error.31 a device attached to the system is not functioning”. All other automatic start services (including net logon) are running and there are no DNS issues etc. All devices are also functioning but the two logical MSA disks are now numbered in the Windows Disk Management MMC as 2 and 4 and I suspect that they may have previously been identified as disks 1 & 2 and perhaps windows still sees this as an ongoing failure?? Replication has not been affected but obviously there are many audit failures in the security log relating to users and workstations presumably linked to the Kerberos issue. Attempting to manually start the kerberos service generates the following in the System Log. Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7023 Date: 09/11/2009 Time: 09:46:55 User: N/A Computer: Server1 Description: The Kerberos Key Distribution Center service terminated with the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning. DCDIAG passes all tests except “Advertising” and “Services” which I believe relate directly to the failure of Kerberos only. Any advice would be appreciated.

• How to transfer Windows Vista disk image to new machine

  I'm trying to upgrade a user's machine to some better hardware. I know of Easy Transfer, but I'd rather not have to reinstall all the programs that are already present. (Some of which are no longer available, anyway). Instead, I'm trying to transfer the entire disk image from one machine to the other, but I ran into issues. If I copy the partition image over to the new machine using Clonezilla, I get errors on boot saying that I need to insert the Vista install disk and run repair. I do that, but it then says that it is unable to repair whatever it is that's broken. Next, I tried to sysprep the old machine before creating the image, but sysprep fails saying that it encountered some sort of system error. Should it be possible to sysprep any arbitrary machine, or does it only work on a relatively clean install? Could it be a missing driver that is tripping me up? The new machine is a fairly stock desktop that shouldn't need any special drivers beyond what's already present in standard Vista. Are there any foolproof methods for doing this sort of thing?

• Disk IO slow on ESXi, even slower on a VM (freeNAS + iSCSI)

  I have a server with ESXi 5 and iSCSI attached network storage(4x1Tb Raid-Z on freenas 8.0.4). Those two machines are connected to each other with Gigabit ethernet. The raid-z volume is divided into three parts: two zvols, shared with iscsi, and one directly on top of zfs, shared with nfs and similar. I ssh'd into the freeNAS box, and did some testing on the disks. I used ddto test the third part of the disks (straight on top of ZFS). I copied a 4GB (2x the amount of RAM) block from /dev/zero to the disk, and the speed was 80MB/s. Other of the iSCSI shared zvols is a datastore for the ESXi. I did similar test with time dd .. there. Since the dd there did not give the speed, I divided the amount of data transfered by the time show by time. The result was around 30-40 MB/s. Thats about half of the speed from the freeNAS host! Then I tested the IO on a VM running on the same ESXi host. The VM was a light CentOS 6.0 machine, which was not really doing anything else at that time. There were no other VMs running on the server at the time, and the other two "parts" of the disk array were not used. A similar dd test gave me result of about 15-20 MB/s. That is again about half of the result on a lower level! Of course the is some overhead in raid-z - zfs - zvolume - iSCSI - VMFS - VM, but I don't expect it to be that big. I belive there must be something wrong in my system. I have heard about bad performance of freeNAS's iSCSI, is that it?   Guys I'm rolling out a SQL database server that will be used to back Sharepoint 2007. Right now I need some advice on my disk layout. I have two Dell servers that are configured a little differently in terms of storage. The principle server will be using a combination of local storage and san storage. I have to work with what I have the organization is currently all allocated on san storage it was like pulling teeth to even get what I have to work with now. My disk setup on the principle is as follows: raid 1 for OS raid 10 for logs raid 10 fiber on san for high IO databases raid 10 sata on san for content databases My question in regards to the principle server is where should I place the temp db? I thought about placing it on the fiber raid 10 which will be hosting my high IO Sharepoint SSP databases my only other choice is to move it to the raid 1 os partition which I’m sure you guys will be against. Now let’s talk about the mirror server it is not connected to the san it is all local 6 15k SAS drives. Now my question is the same do I put tempdb on the os partition or do I leave the os partition and use a single raid 10 for everything? Any help you can provide is much appreciated.

  I am getting "UNC" errors on a hard disk on Ubuntu 9.10. It slows down my system, applications have not been responding for a long time. • Not able to access external Hard disk

  I have a 1TB External Hard drive which I'm currently not able to access. When I open the External drive in Finder, It shows it's empty. When I use the option to "Get Info", I get the dialog box stating it has about 300GB Free. Tried to get into the External Drive using Terminal, I had no luck. Checking in Disk Utility, It showed that I have many number of files but ZERO folder. I tried to "repair disk", in the process the external Drive got unmounted in between the process. I checked this drive on Windows. I was able to open almost all the folders but I wasn't able to copy anything onto the external drive. One folder caused my windows computer to hang, So i connected the drive back onto my MacBook Pro and tried to access the drive through terminal (this time it worked!) and then I tried to delete the folder with rm command, I got an "input/output error" What should i do to recover the files in that folder? How can i access my external drive on my mac

• MySQL getting stuck, eating up disk i/o

  Hi all, Using mySQL 5.0.51 on Solaris . At intermittent times it looks like MySQL is getting 'stuck' . The disk usage on the server spikes to 98% busy from reads. I used dtrace (specifically DTrace toolkit - iosnoop) to track down what processes was using all the reads. Mysql was calling tablename.TDM hundreds of times per second. There was no more than average load on the webserver that could account for this. There were no cronjobs running, and no other utilities like mysqldump or anything. It is a master / slave replication setup. As a jury-rigged fix, I altered the mysql table from 'tablename' to 'tablename2' and then back to 'tablename' This fixed the problem temporarily, and "unsticks" mysql. The disk usage goes back down and dtrace is no longer showing hundreds of reads to 'tablename.TDM' / second. A couple ideas I had are: 1. MySQL version bug 2. Infinite loop somewhere in my application (which i'm not sure how likely this is) 3. ?? Has anybody seen this before or have any insight? Thanks

  Hi everyone, I recently install ArchBang on a machine with Ubuntu and XP. I ran update-grub from Ubuntu and it found the new install and created an entry. However, when I try to boot it, I get: error: out of disk error: you need to load kernel first I've tried several things, including adding a new entry in 40_custom, but nothing changes. • Recovery disk Windows 8 HP Pavilion g6

  I recently purchased a HP Pavilion g6 laptop running Windows 8. I want to either obtain the Windows 8 ISO or make some kind of recovery disk that would allow me to restore the system if things go wrong. The HP Pavilion comes with the 'HP Recovery Manager' which I thought may do the job, but on running it and putting in a DVD-R as requested it seems to just hang for a number of hours without doing a thing (the disk sounds like it's spinning for a few minutes but then goes silent). I then tried 'recdisc.exe' but I get the error System Repair could not be created The device reported unexpected or invalid data for a command. (0xC0AA02FF) Next I obtained my Windows 8 product key using the software ProduKey thinking this would allow me to go to the Microsoft website and download the Windows 8 ISO, but as far as I can tell all that is available is the upgrade which can be used if one is running something like Windows 7. Can anyone advise? EDIT: after a reboot recdisc.exe did work; I think the problem was due to some Windows updates needing a reboot, but never the less I would like a full Windows 8 ISO if possible.

• p410i Mirror failed couldnt find same disk

  I have an HP server with an P410i RAID Card installed. I had two SATA Drives connected (250GB each). The RAID was configured as a Mirror. A few days ago the drive one (1) failed, and i had to remove it. Tried to find the same part number here in Venezuela, but i couldn't. So, i bought a 500GB SATA Drive, and connected it to the same bay where the 250GB failed drive was. When the server booted, it asked me if i wanted to rebuild the data. I selected the option for that, and Windows Server restarted properly. When i got into the ACU (Array Configuration Utility) it told me that it was rebuilding the data. Today the warning went away, and according to the ACU everything is just fine. My question is... What i did was right? Can i create a mirror from a 250GB disk in a 500GB disk using the p410i? I have done that before, but only using software RAID in Windows, and it just uses the space it needs. As a matter of fact, when did that using Windows i was able to use the remaining space in the bigger drive, but in the p410i i can't use it. Should i be worried? • Performance of external USB disk with ESXi5

  I have a new HP DL120 G7 server with ESXi5. One VM is a Win2003 instalation and I have an external USB2.0 drive attached by USB Controller and USB Device. I copy a 4GB file from external USB to server disk. In the VM that takes up to 10 minutes. On a native Win2003 that takes aprox. 3 minutes. I have no explaination for that diference: In any case the bottleneck is the USB connection, much slower than the disks (SAS, RAID1). If the USB connection on the VM would be USB1.1 and not USB2.0 it would take much more time. (The disk performance between server partitions on the VM is correct. - see update) Could be that my native box is extremely fast and the VM is the normal case. ??? Update I try with passtrough and a first run copy the same data in aprox. 7 minutes. Still 2 times slower than the native connection. I also did another messure and the copy between partitions on the same VM takes 3 minutes.

• RTS Voxel Engine using LWJGL - Textures glitching

  I'm currently working on an RTS game engine using voxels. I have implemented a basic chunk manager using an Octree of Octrees which contains my voxels (simple square blocks, as in Minecraft). I'm using a Voronoi-based terrain generation to get a simplistic yet relatively realistic heightmap. I have no problem showing a 256*256*256 grid of voxels with a decent framerate (250), because of frustum culling, face culling and only rendering visible blocks. For example, in a random voxel grid of 256*256*256 I generally only render 100k-120k faces, not counting frustum culling. Frustum culling is only called every 100ms, since calling it every frame seemed a bit overkill. Now I have reached the stage of texturing and I'm experiencing some problems: Some experienced people might already see the problem, but if we zoom in, you can see the glitches more clearly: All the seams between my blocks are glitching and kind of 'overlapping' or something. It's much more visible when you're moving around. I'm using a single, simple texture map to draw on my cubes, where each texture is 16*16 pixels big: I have added black edges around the textures to get a kind of cellshaded look, I think it's cool. The texture map has 256 textures of each 16*16 pixels, meaning the total size of my texture map is 256*256 pixels.
