• Games on windows 8 in bootcamp lag even on lowest graphics

- by Jackson Gariety
I've been playing Crysis 2 and Skyrim on my Retina MacBookPro (10,1) for months now. The two games used to run super smoothly even on nearly maxed out settings. This laptop has an Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics card inside, it runs great. But I recently replaced my Windows 8 consumer preview with the retail copy, and since then, 3D games lag in this odd way, no matter what the graphics settings. Every second Skyrim and Crysis alternates between running smoothly and lagging. It's a cyclical lag that comes and goes like clockwork. I can turn the graphics down to 800x600 with no antialiasing and low texture quality, and it runs much smoother on the "up" motion of the cycle, but every second it moves back into this lag spike. I've tried installing beta graphics drivers, re installing the operating system, re installing the bootcamp support software, and freeing up space (I have about 20 GB free). I can't figure out what suddenly caused this other than some obscure difference between the consumer preview and the retail version. What can I try? Is my video card failing? Are there some other drivers I can install? This isn't normal lag from maxing out the card, it

• Michael Crump’s notes for 70-563 PRO – Designing and Developing Windows Applications usi

- by mbcrump
TIME TO GO PRO! This is my notes for 70-563 PRO – Designing and Developing Windows Applications using .NET Framework 3.5 I created it using several resources (various certification web sites, msdn, official ms 70-548 book). The reason that I created this review is because a) I am taking the exam. b) MS did not create a book for this exam. Use the(MS 70-548)book. c) To make sure I am familiar with each before the exam. I hope that it provides a good start for your own notes. I hope that someone finds this useful. At least, it will give you a starting point of what to expect to know on the PRO exam. Also, for those wondering, the PRO exam does contains very little code. It is basically all theory. 1. Validation Controls – How to prevent users from entering invalid data on forms. (MaskedTextBox control and RegEx) 2. ServiceController – used to start and control the behavior of existing services. 3. User Feedback (know winforms Status Bar, Tool Tips, Color, Error Provider, Context-Sensitive and Accessibility) 4. Specific (derived) exceptions must be handled before general (base class) exceptions. By moving the exception handling for the base type Exception to after exception handling of ArgumentNullException, all ArgumentNullException thrown by the Helper method will be caught and logged correctly. 5. A heartbeat method is a method exposed by a Web service that allows external applications to check on the status of the service. 6. New users must master key tasks quickly. Giving these tasks context and appropriate detail will help. However, advanced users will demand quicker paths. Shortcuts, accelerators, or toolbar buttons will speed things along for the advanced user. 7. MSBuild uses project files to instruct the build engine what to build and how to build it. MSBuild project files are XML files that adhere to the MSBuild XML schema. The MSBuild project files contain complete file, build action, and dependency information for each individual projects. 8. Evaluating whether or not to fix a bug involves a triage process. You must identify the bug's impact, set the priority, categorize it, and assign a developer. Many times the person doing the triage work will assign the bug to a developer for further investigation. In fact, the workflow for the bug work item inside of Team System supports this step. Developers are often asked to assess the impact of a given bug. This assessment helps the person doing the triage make a decision on how to proceed. When assessing the impact of a bug, you should consider time and resources to fix it, bug risk, and impacts of the bug. 9. In large projects it is generally impossible and unfeasible to fix all bugs because of the impact on schedule and budget. 10. Code reviews should be conducted by a technical lead or a technical peer. 11. Testing Applications 12. WCF Services – application state 13. SQL Server 2005 / 2008 Express Edition – reliable storage of data / Microsoft SQL Server 3.5 Compact Database– used for client computers to retrieve and save data from a shared location. 14. Supports offline user and minimum dependency on external components. 15. MDI and SDI Forms (specifically IsMDIContainer) 16. Pessimistic - Block operations of a transaction, if they may cause violation of the rules. • Why ping another innet machine from MacBook get netgate's ip address?

- by Xinwang
I have three machine in my home network connected by a wireless router. One is server installed linux at 192.168.1.1, another is Thinkpad with MS Windows XP at 192.168.1.2, last one is MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.3 at 192.168.1.3. When I ping the Linux Server from Thinkpad (MS Windows XP) I can get the correct ip address, but when I ping it from Mac I get the global address of my router, like 61.135.181.175. Could you tell me why this happen? And how do I get same ping result on Mac and Windows. Thanks

• Is it useful to unit test methods where the only logic is guards?

- by Vaccano
Say I have a method like this: public void OrderNewWidget(Widget widget) { if ((widget.PartNumber > 0) && (widget.PartAvailable)) { WigdetOrderingService.OrderNewWidgetAsync(widget.PartNumber); } } I have several such methods in my code (the front half to an async Web Service call). I am debating if it is useful to get them covered with unit tests. Yes there is logic here, but it is only guard logic. (Meaning I make sure I have the stuff I need before I allow the web service call to happen.) Part of me says "sure you can unit test them, but it is not worth the time" (I am on a project that is already behind schedule). But the other side of me says, if you don't unit test them, and someone changes the Guards, then there could be problems. But the first part of me says back, if someone changes the guards, then you are just making more work for them (because now they have to change the guards and the unit tests for the guards). For example, if my service assumes responsibility to check for Widget availability then I may not want that guard any more. If it is under unit test, I have to change two places now. I see pros and cons in both ways. So I thought I would ask what others have done.

• How can I separate the user interface from the business logic while still maintaining efficiency?

- by Uri
Let's say that I want to show a form that represents 10 different objects on a combobox. For example, I want the user to pick one hamburguer from 10 different ones that contain tomatoes. Since I want to separate UI and logic, I'd have to pass the form a string representation of the hamburguers in order to display them on the combobox. Otherwise, the UI would have to dig into the objects fields. Then the user would pick a hamburguer from the combobox, and submit it back to the controller. Now the controller would have to find again said hamburguer based on the string representation used by the form (maybe an ID?). Isn't that incredibly inefficient? You already had the objects you wanted to pick one from. If you submited to the form the whole objects, and then returned a specific object, you wouldn't have to refind it later on since the form already returned a reference to that object. Moreover, if I'm wrong and you actually should send the whole object to the form, how can I isolate UI from logic?

• Is Play Framework good for doing some logic parallely?

- by pmichna
I'm going to build a web application that's going to host urban games. A user visits my website, clicks "Start game" and starts receiving some SMS messages when gets to some location and has to answer them to get points. My question: is Play suitable for this kind of application? From what I've read I know for sure it's ok for traditional web applications: user interface for same data storage and manipulation. But what if after clicking the "start button" some logic has to go on its own course? How would I handle parallely checking geolocation of the players (I have API for that)? I guess in some threads that would ping them every ~5 sec. and do some processing but is it possible to just "disconnect" them from the main user interface? So to sum up: I want an application written in Play that starts a separate thread for a game after clicking "start game" and other users are able to view their data (statisctics etc.), while the threads work their way with the game logic. I found something like jobs but they are documented for version 1.2 (current one is 2.2). Sorry for my somewhat fuzzy explenation, I tried to do my best.

• What are some ways to separate game logic from animations and the draw loop?

- by TMV
I have only previously made flash games, using MovieClips and such to separate out my animations from my game logic. Now I am getting into trying my hand at making a game for Android, but the game programming theory around separating these things still confuses me. I come from a background of developing non game web applications so I am versed in more MVC like patterns and am stuck in that mindset as I approach game programming. I want to do things like abstract my game by having, for example, a game board class that contains the data for a grid of tiles with instances of a tile class that each contain properties. I can give my draw loop access to this and have it draw the game board based on the properties of each tile on the game board, but I don't understand where exactly animation should go. As far as I can tell, animation sort of sits between the abstracted game logic (model) and the draw loop (view). With my MVC mindset, it's frustrating trying to decide where animation is actually supposed to go. It would have quite a bit of data associated with it like a model, but seemingly needs to be very closely coupled with the draw loop in order to have things like frame independent animation. How can I break out of this mindset and start thinking about patterns that make more sense for games?

• Interesting SQL Sorting Issue

- by rofly
It's crunch time, deadline for my most recent contract is coming in two days and almost everything is complete and working fine (knock on wood) except for one issue. In one of my stored procedures, I'm needing to return a result set as follows. group_id | name A101 | Craig A102 | Craig Z101 | Craig Z102 | Craig A101 | Jim A102 | Jim Z101 | Jim Z102 | Jim B101 | Andy B102 | Andy Z101 | Andy Z102 | Andy The names need to be sorted by the first character of the group id and also include the Z101/Z102 entries. By sorting strictly by the group id, I get a result set as follows: A101 | Craig A102 | Craig A101 | Jim A102 | Jim B101 | Andy B102 | Andy Z101 | Andy Z102 | Andy Z101 | Jim Z102 | Jim I really can't think of a solution that doesn't involve me making a cursor and bloating the stored procedure up more than it already is. I'm sure a great mind out there has an elegant solution and I'm eager to see what the community can come up with. Thanks a ton in advance.

• Invoice Discount: Negative line items vs Internal properties

- by FreshCode
Should discount on invoice items and entire invoices be negative line items or separate properties of an invoice? In a similar question, Should I incorporate list of fees/discounts into an order class or have them be itemlines, the asker focuses more on orders than invoices (which is a slightly different business entity). Discount is proposed to be separate from order items since it is not equivalent to a fee or product and may have different reporting requirements. Hence, discount should not simply be a negative line item. Previously I have successfully used negative line items to clearly indicate and calculate discount, but this feels inflexible and inaccurate from a business perspective. Now I am opting to add discount to each line item, along with an invoice-wide discount. Is this the right way to do it? Should each item have its own discount amount and percentage? Domain Model Code Sample This is what my domain model, which maps to an SQL repository, looks like: public class Invoice { public int ID { get; set; } public Guid JobID { get; set; } public string InvoiceNumber { get; set; } public Guid UserId { get; set; } // user who created it public DateTime Date { get; set; } public decimal DiscountPercent { get; set; } // all lines discount %? public decimal DiscountAmount { get; set; } // all lines discount $? public LazyList<InvoiceLine> InvoiceLines { get; set; } public LazyList<Payment> Payments { get; set; } // for payments received public boolean IsVoided { get; set; } // Invoices are immutable. // To change: void -> new invoice. public decimal Total { get { return (1.0M - DiscountPercent) * InvoiceLines.Sum(i => i.LineTotal) - DiscountAmount; } } } public class InvoiceLine { public int ID { get; set; } public int InvoiceID { get; set; } public string Title { get; set; } public decimal Quantity { get; set; } public decimal LineItemPrice { get; set; } public decimal DiscountPercent { get; set; } // line discount %? public decimal DiscountAmount { get; set; } // line discount amount? public decimal LineTotal { get { return (1.0M - DiscountPercent) * (this.Quantity * (this.LineItemPrice)) - DiscountAmount; } } }

• Problem setting output flags for ALU in "Nand to Tetris" course

- by MahlerFive
Although I tagged this homework, it is actually for a course which I am doing on my own for free. Anyway, the course is called "From Nand to Tetris" and I'm hoping someone here has seen or taken the course so I can get some help. I am at the stage where I am building the ALU with the supplied hdl language. My problem is that I can't get my chip to compile properly. I am getting errors when I try to set the output flags for the ALU. I believe the problem is that I can't subscript any intermediate variable, since when I just try setting the flags to true or false based on some random variable (say an input flag), I do not get the errors. I know the problem is not with the chips I am trying to use since I am using all builtin chips. Here is my ALU chip so far: /** * The ALU. Computes a pre-defined set of functions out = f(x,y) * where x and y are two 16-bit inputs. The function f is selected * by a set of 6 control bits denoted zx, nx, zy, ny, f, no. * The ALU operation can be described using the following pseudocode: * if zx=1 set x = 0 // 16-bit zero constant * if nx=1 set x = !x // Bit-wise negation * if zy=1 set y = 0 // 16-bit zero constant * if ny=1 set y = !y // Bit-wise negation * if f=1 set out = x + y // Integer 2's complement addition * else set out = x & y // Bit-wise And * if no=1 set out = !out // Bit-wise negation * * In addition to computing out, the ALU computes two 1-bit outputs: * if out=0 set zr = 1 else zr = 0 // 16-bit equality comparison * if out<0 set ng = 1 else ng = 0 // 2's complement comparison */ CHIP ALU { IN // 16-bit inputs: x[16], y[16], // Control bits: zx, // Zero the x input nx, // Negate the x input zy, // Zero the y input ny, // Negate the y input f, // Function code: 1 for add, 0 for and no; // Negate the out output OUT // 16-bit output out[16], // ALU output flags zr, // 1 if out=0, 0 otherwise ng; // 1 if out<0, 0 otherwise PARTS: // Zero the x input Mux16( a=x, b=false, sel=zx, out=x2 ); // Zero the y input Mux16( a=y, b=false, sel=zy, out=y2 ); // Negate the x input Not16( in=x, out=notx ); Mux16( a=x, b=notx, sel=nx, out=x3 ); // Negate the y input Not16( in=y, out=noty ); Mux16( a=y, b=noty, sel=ny, out=y3 ); // Perform f Add16( a=x3, b=y3, out=addout ); And16( a=x3, b=y3, out=andout ); Mux16( a=andout, b=addout, sel=f, out=preout ); // Negate the output Not16( in=preout, out=notpreout ); Mux16( a=preout, b=notpreout, sel=no, out=out ); // zr flag Or8way( in=out[0..7], out=zr1 ); // PROBLEM SHOWS UP HERE Or8way( in=out[8..15], out=zr2 ); Or( a=zr1, b=zr2, out=zr ); // ng flag Not( in=out[15], out=ng ); } So the problem shows up when I am trying to send a subscripted version of 'out' to the Or8Way chip. I've tried using a different variable than 'out', but with the same problem. Then I read that you are not able to subscript intermediate variables. I thought maybe if I sent the intermediate variable to some other chip, and that chip subscripted it, it would solve the problem, but it has the same error. Unfortunately I just can't think of a way to set the zr and ng flags without subscripting some intermediate variable, so I'm really stuck! Just so you know, if I replace the problematic lines with the following, it will compile (but not give the right results since I'm just using some random input): // zr flag Not( in=zx, out=zr ); // ng flag Not( in=zx, out=ng ); Anyone have any ideas? Edit: Here is the appendix of the book for the course which specifies how the hdl works. Specifically look at section 5 which talks about buses and says: "An internal pin (like v above) may not be subscripted". Edit: Here is the exact error I get: "Line 68, Can't connect gate's output pin to part". The error message is sort of confusing though, since that does not seem to be the actual problem. If I just replace "Or8way( in=out[0..7], out=zr1 );" with "Or8way( in=false, out=zr1 );" it will not generate this error, which is what lead me to look up in the appendix and find that the out variable, since it was derived as intermediate, could not be subscripted.

• Comparing (similar) images with Python/PIL

- by Attila Oláh
I'm trying to calculate the similarity (read: Levenshtein distance) of two images, using Python 2.6 and PIL. I plan to use the python-levenshtein library for fast comparison. Main question: What is a good strategy for comparing images? My idea is something like: Convert to RGB (transparent - white) (or maybe convert to monochrome?) Scale up the smaller one to the larger one's size Convert each channel (= the only channel, if converted to monochrome) to a sequence (item value = color value of the pixel) Calculate the Levenshtein distance between the two sequences Of course, this will not handle cases like mirrored images, cropped images, etc. But for basic comparison, this should be useful. Is there a better strategy documented somewhere?

• Using the WF rules engine without workflow in production - implementation experiences

- by Josh E
I'm designing an application for a type of case management system that has a big requirement for customizable, flexible business rules. I'm planning on using the WF Rules Engine without workflow (see: here, among other examples and such). One of the points my client brought up (justifiably so!) is whether there are extant examples of using the rules engine for a business rules engine without workflow. My question, of course is: Has anyone used the WF Rules engine sans workflow in a production application before, and what were your experiences?

• stock management of assemblys and its sub parts

Sample bogus and hyper simplified database: Table prod: prodID 1 prodName Flux capacitor prodCost 900 prodPrice 1350 (900*1.5) prodStock 3 - prodID 2 prodName Mr Fusion prodCost 300 prodPrice 600 (300*2) prodStock 2 - prodID 3 prodName Time travel kit prodCost 1650 (1350+300) prodPrice 2145 (1650*1.3) prodStock 2 Table rels relID 1 relSrc 1 (Flux capacitor) relType 4 (is a subpart of) relDst 3 (Time travel kit) - relID 2 relSrc 2 (Mr Fusion) relType 4 (is a subpart of) relDst 3 (Time travel kit) prodPrice: it's calculated based on the cost but not in a linear way. In this example for costs of 500 or less, the markup is a 200%. For costs of 500-1000 the markup is 150%. For costs of 1000+ the markup is 130% That's why the time travel kit is much cheaper than the individual parts prodStock: here is my problem. I can sell kits or the individual parts, So the stock of the kits is virtual. The problem when I buy: Some providers sell me the Time Travel kit as a whole (with one barcode) and some sells me the individual parts (with a different barcode) So when I load the stock I don't know how to impute it. The problem when I sell: If I only sell kits, calculate the stock would be easy: "I have 3 Flux capacitors and 2 Mr Fusions, so I have 2 Time travel kits and a Flux Capacitor" But I can sell Kits or individual parts. I have to track the stock of the individual parts and the possible kits at the same time (and I have to compensate for the sell price) Probably this is really simple, but I can't see a simple solution. Resuming: I have to find a way of tracking the stock and the database/program is the one who has to do it (I cant ask the clerk to correct the stock) I'm using php+MySql. But this is more a logical problem than a programing one

• Static analysis of multiple if statements (conditions)

I have code similar to: if conditionA(x, y, z) then doA() else if conditionB(x, y, z) then doB() ... else if conditionZ(x, y, z) then doZ() else throw ShouldNeverHappenException I would like to validate two things (using static analysis): If all conditions conditionA, conditionB, ..., conditionZ are mutually exclusive (i.e. it is not possible that two or more conditions are true in the same time). All possible cases are covered, i.e. "else throw" statement will never be called. Could you recommend me a tool and/or a way I could (easily) do this? I would appreciate more detailed informations than "use Prolog" or "use Mathematica"... ;-)

• How should I go about implementing a points-to analysis in Maude?

- by reprogrammer
I'm going to implement a points-to analysis algorithm. I'd like to implement this analysis mainly based on the algorithm by Whaley and Lam. Whaley and Lam use a BDD based implementation of Datalog to represent and compute the points-to analysis relations. The following lists some of the relations that are used in a typical points-to analysis. Note that D(w, z) :- A(w, x),B(x, y), C(y, z) means D(w, z) is true if A(w, x), B(x, y), and C(y, z) are all true. BDD is the data structure used to represent these relations. Relations input vP0 (variable : V, heap : H) input store (base : V, field : F, source : V) input load (base : V, field : F, dest : V) input assign (dest : V, source : V) output vP (variable : V, heap : H) output hP (base : H, field : F, target : H) Rules vP(v, h) :- vP0(v, h) vP(v1, h) :- assign(v1, v2), vP(v2, h) hP(h1, f,h2) :- store(v1, f, v2), vP(v1, h1), vP(v2, h2) vP(v2, h2) :- load(v1, f, v2), vP(v1, h1), hP(h1, f, h2) I need to understand if Maude is a good environment for implementing points-to analysis. I noticed that Maude uses a BDD library called BuDDy. But, it looks like that Maude uses BDDs for a different purpose, i.e. unification. So, I thought I might be able to use Maude instead of a Datalog engine to compute the relations of my points-to analysis. I assume Maude propagates independent information concurrently. And this concurrency could potentially make my points-to analysis faster than sequential processing of rules. But, I don't know the best way to represent my relations in Maude. Should I implement BDD in Maude myself, or Maude's internal unification based on BDD has the same effect?

• Stock management of assemblies and its sub parts (relations)

- by The Disintegrator
I have to track the stock of individual parts and kits (assemblies) and can't find a satisfactory way of doing this. So, I have to track the stock of the individual parts and the possible kits at the same time (and I have to compensate for the sell price) Probably this is really simple, but I can't see a simple solution. Resuming: I have to find a way of tracking the stock and the database/program is the one who has to do it (I cant ask the clerk to correct the stock) I'm using php+MySql. But this is more a logical problem than a programing one

• Higher-order unification

- by rwallace
I'm working on a higher-order theorem prover, of which unification seems to be the most difficult subproblem. If Huet's algorithm is still considered state-of-the-art, does anyone have any links to explanations of it that are written to be understood by a programmer rather than a mathematician? Or even any examples of where it works and the usual first-order algorithm doesn't?

• being able to solve google code jam problem sets

- by JPro
This is not a homework question, but rather my intention to know if this is what it takes to learn programming. I keep loggin into TopCoder not to actually participate but to get the basic understand of how the problems are solved. But to my knowledge I don't understand what the problem is and how to translate the problem into an algorithm that can solve it. Just now I happen to look at ACM ICPC 2010 World Finals which is being held in china. The teams were given problem sets and one of them is this: Given at most 100 points on a plan with distinct x-coordinates, find the shortest cycle that passes through each point exactly once, goes from the leftmost point always to the right until it reaches the rightmost point, then goes always to the left until it gets back to the leftmost point. Additionally, two points are given such that the the path from left to right contains the first point, and the path from right to left contains the second point. This seems to be a very simple DP: after processing the last k points, and with the first path ending in point a and the second path ending in point b, what is the smallest total length to achieve that? This is O(n^2) states, transitions in O(n). We deal with the two special points by forcing the first path to contain the first one, and the second path contain the second one. Now I have no idea what I am supposed to solve after reading the problem set. and there's an other one from google code jam: Problem In a big, square room there are two point light sources: one is red and the other is green. There are also n circular pillars. Light travels in straight lines and is absorbed by walls and pillars. The pillars therefore cast shadows: they do not let light through. There are places in the room where no light reaches (black), where only one of the two light sources reaches (red or green), and places where both lights reach (yellow). Compute the total area of each of the four colors in the room. Do not include the area of the pillars. Input * One line containing the number of test cases, T. Each test case contains, in order: * One line containing the coordinates x, y of the red light source. * One line containing the coordinates x, y of the green light source. * One line containing the number of pillars n. * n lines describing the pillars. Each contains 3 numbers x, y, r. The pillar is a disk with the center (x, y) and radius r. The room is the square described by 0 = x, y = 100. Pillars, room walls and light sources are all disjoint, they do not overlap or touch. Output For each test case, output: Case #X: black area red area green area yellow area Is it required that people who program should be should be able to solve these type of problems? I would apprecite if anyone can help me interpret the google code jam problem set as I wish to participate in this years Code Jam to see if I can do anthing or not. Thanks.

• redirect prints to log file

- by lakshmipathi
Okay. I have completed my first python program. It has around 1000 lines of code. During development I placed plenty of print stmt before running a command using os.system() say something like, print "running command",cmd os.system(cmd) Now I have completed the program.I thought about commenting them but redirecting all these unnecessary print (i can't remove all print stmt- since some provide useful info for user) into a log file will be more useful? Any tricks or tips.

• Breadth-First in Prolog

- by Ricardo
What is the general idea of using breadth-first over the default depth-first search scheme in Prolog? Not taking infinite branches? Is there any general way to use breadth-first in Prolog? I've been googling around and I didn't find too much useful info for a novice.
