  • Copy a harddrive from a failed desktop machine using a second working one.

    Heres the scenario: I have PC-A, an old PC that runs Windows XP but now refuses to boot due to a failed motherboard (or maybe PSU). This PC has a single 80gb IDE drive. I also have PC-B, running Windows Vista, this is working fine. I want to copy all the data off PC-As HDD onto PC-B. To do this I have taken the HDD out of PC-A and connected it as a slave to PC-B. PC-B now boots and sees the additional drive. However, when I attempt to access/copy user folders (i.e. Documents and Settings/[username]/*) I am told that I cannot access the folders due to user permissions. I am doing this under an adminstrator account on PC-B. So the question is, how can I "backup" the data? Preferably without making any changes to the drive contents. The reason for this is that it is possible that PC-A is failing due to a bad PSU, so I intend to replace it before writing off the machine. However I would feel much happier if I had a backup of the data on the HDD.

Our senior programmers have knowledge of how to do this, Although - I would like to know how you could go from converting a eLearning course from Flash into a application for Mac and PC, looking similar to Garageband's music lessons? What programming language was used to create Garageband on Mac? What is the best way to create a application that will work on PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Touch etc, Rather then using flash and Actionscript to create online based applications, that will only work in a browser on Mac and PC?     I'm in the planning phase of creating an action-rpg for the PC, and I'd like to create a League of Legends style look for the game (animated/cartoony). Any idea which engine best replicates this look? I ask because when I look at a lot of the UDk/Unreal games, they've all got the more realistic 3-D look that I'd like to avoid, so I was wondering if an alternate look was possible on that type of engine. Source SDK and Unity also look very interesting, I just don't know what types of visual capabilities these engines have. Thanks in advance.

    Hi, I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab as a reference implementation (phone and first gen Android tablet), of Android 2.x for app development. I have noticed a slew of Android 3.0 slates being talked about at CES 2011 (Motorola XOOM, etc.). If I had a multitouch PC with the Android SDK/Emulator on it, would this allow me to more closely approximate device simulation by allowing user input via the multitouch screen ? Would it work via touch just like Windows 7 recognizes touch as mouse style input ? Has anyone done this ? Thanks, Scott

    I use Windows 7 Virtual PC on my current project and I often bring home the files, so I can work some in the evenings.  Since my VHDs are large, I’ll only copy the undo disks, saved state, and virtual machine config files from my external drive.  I copy them to a small portable drive and once I get home, I’ll copy them to a large external drive. I’ve done this for over a year, but recently I started getting an error when I tried to start the VPC after the copying was finished.  It would open the initial window with the progress bar, but eventually the bar would stop, turn red, and then the error “RPC server unavailable” would appear.  When I first started seeing these, I’d try again, but no luck. After some testing, it turns out that my small portable drive is apparently going bad, so it was corrupting the files.  Lucky for me, that I never overwrote my good copies with corrupted copies, at least not at both the office and at home.

    I've 'installed' Kindle using Wine but it doesn't work. The menu item is there but nothing seems to happen when I click it. I have set the application settings in Wine config to run Kindle as Windows 98 as I've seen suggested... still no luck. Any experience with this? EDIT I don't have a kindle, but I use kindle for android. I was wanting to be able to read my books on my pc without having to use windows.

    I provide technical support for several high schools in Spain and I have been building up a inventory of the schools machines. On the windows only computers I normally run PC Wizard to quickly get a good overview of the machines hardware, software and network settings. Is there an equivalent tool preferable with a GUI and an export option to html or pdf in Ubuntu. I have tried a few options such as: Gnomes gconf-editor hardinfo (GUI) lshw (CLI) I'm just looking for an all in one application that builds a detailed profile of the installed software, hardware and network setting of a particular machine. I have found Sysinfo which is quite good, it displays the most important hardware info and allows you to save it to a text file with a neat GUI. I'm still looking for a more complete solution but it's a good start.
