  • Many Stack Overflow users' pages have no Google PageRank and they are not indexed, why?

    - by Marco Demaio
If you go to my user page on Stack Overflow and you check it with the Google Toolbar, you can see it has no PageRank at all (this does happen for almost any user page, even people with much higher reputation, the only exceptions seem to be the users in page 1, and some other users they have PR). My user page's Page Rank is not only zero, but not calculated at all. When PR is 0 or less than 1, but calculated the Google bar shows white, but when the PR is not even calculated like in my user page the Google bar shows in grey. I further more discovered that my user page is NOT EVEN INDEXED on Google, simple test is searching on Google for the exact page url: "http://stackoverflow.com/users/260080/marco-demaio" and you will see no result. The question is how can this be??? This is really weird to me because of the following reason: If you search on Google for "Marco Demaio" on Stack Overflow only (you can do this by searching "site:stackoverflow.com Marco Demaio") the search result shows hundreds of 'asking/answering questions' pages where I was 'tagged'!!! Let's check one of these: the 1st one that appears now (shows one of the question I asked). We can be sure this page is indexed in Google because comes out in a search. Moreover, its PR is calculated. It's probably nearly zero. Still, some PR flows there, the PR bar is not grey, but white: The page shown above has got links to my own user page. I checked the source code of the page shown above and the links are not hidden or set with a rel="nofollow", moreover I can't see any meta character excluding the links on the page from being followed. So what's happening? Why Google does not see my user page at all. Did Stack Overflow do something to achieve this? If yes what did they do? Any explanation really appreciates (as always). P.S. obviously I checked also the code of my user page, but I could not find meta tags excluding Google search for the page. P.S. 2 in a desperate adventure I also checked Stack Overflow's robots.txt but it does not seem to exclude user pages. UPDATE 1 following up on some answers, I did some more research. Excluding for a while the PR problem (since PR is not science), and looking only at the user page on Stack Overflow NOT BEING INDEXED problem: pages do not seem to be indexed by Google because of the user reputation, this user for instance has got NOW 200 points less reputation than me and his page is indexed (while mine not). It does not seem even to be connected with months you have been on Stack Overflow, this user (almost my same reputation) has been there for 3 months only and his page is indexed (while mine not and I have been a user for 7 months). It's bizarre! UPDATE February/2011 As of today, the page got indexed by Google at least when you search for "site:stackoverflow.com Marco Demaio" it's the 1st page. The amazing thing is that it has still got NO PageRank at all: Google toolbar states loud and clear "No PageRank information available". It's odd!

  • Android Google-Shopping API force closes while parsing

    - by Sam Jackson
    I'm trying to send a request to the Google-Shopping API with the following static method which I think is working: public static String GET_TITLE(String url) throws JSONException { InputStream is = null; String result = ""; JSONObject jArray = null; // http post try { HttpClient httpclient = new DefaultHttpClient(); HttpPost httppost = new HttpPost(url); HttpResponse response = httpclient.execute(httppost); HttpEntity entity = response.getEntity(); is = entity.getContent(); } catch(Exception e) { Log.e("log_tag", "Error in http connection "+e.toString()); } The URL I'm passing is this BTW: https://www.googleapis.com/shopping/search/v1/public/products/country=US&q=shirts&alt=json &rankBy=relevancy&key=AIzaSyDRKgGmJrdG6pV6DIg2m-nmIbXydxvpjww Next I try to parse this response (where I think the problem comes in) in the same method: try { jArray = new JSONObject(result); } catch(JSONException e){ Log.e("log_tag", "Error parsing data "+e.toString()); } JSONObject itemObject = jArray.getJSONObject("items"); JSONObject productObject = itemObject.getJSONObject("product"); String attributeGoogleId = productObject.getString("googleId"); String attributeProviderId = productObject.getString("providerId"); String attributeTitle = productObject.getString("title");*/ String attributePrice = productObject.getString("price"); JSONObject popupObject = productObject.getJSONObject("popup"); return attributeTitle; } This has been so frustrating, I know it should be simple but everywhere I look I just can't quite get it to work, I'm not exactly sure what the error is since I'm testing it on my HTC Desire because my emulator gives an 'invalid command-line parameter' error when starting, but that's a different issue, anyway, thanks in advance! EDIT: The first one makes it look like there's a problem with the URL, should I change it and see if it makes a difference? 04-01 12:09:05.142: ERROR/log_tag(24968): Error in http connection java.net.UnknownHostException: www.googleapis.com 04-01 12:09:05.142: ERROR/log_tag(24968): Error converting result java.lang.NullPointerException 04-01 12:09:05.142: ERROR/log_tag(24968): Error parsing data org.json.JSONException: End of input at character 0 of 04-01 12:09:05.142: DEBUG/AndroidRuntime(24968): Shutting down VM 04-01 12:09:05.142: WARN/dalvikvm(24968): threadid=1: thread exiting with uncaught exception (group=0x400259f8) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): FATAL EXCEPTION: main 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): java.lang.RuntimeException: Failure delivering result ResultInfo{who=null, request=0, result=-1, data=Intent { act=com.google.zxing.client.android.SCAN flg=0x80000 (has extras) }} to activity {com.spectrum.stock/com.spectrum.stock.CaptureActivity}: java.lang.NullPointerException 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at android.app.ActivityThread.deliverResults(ActivityThread.java:3734) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at android.app.ActivityThread.handleSendResult(ActivityThread.java:3776) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at android.app.ActivityThread.access$2800(ActivityThread.java:135) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at android.app.ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(ActivityThread.java:2166) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:144) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4937) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:868) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:626) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at com.spectrum.stock.JSONResponse.GET_TITLE(JSONResponse.java:61) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at com.spectrum.stock.CaptureActivity.onActivityResult(CaptureActivity.java:78) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at android.app.Activity.dispatchActivityResult(Activity.java:3931) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): at android.app.ActivityThread.deliverResults(ActivityThread.java:3730) 04-01 12:09:05.152: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(24968): ... 11 more 04-01 12:09:05.162: WARN/ActivityManager(96): Force finishing activity com.spectrum.stock/.CaptureActivity

https://docs.google.com/viewer is awesome, but there are some customizations I need to make, and documentation would be helpful. Discovered here http://googlesystem.blogspot.com... . Haven't seen any public documentation that would help. http://code.google.com/apis/documents/overview.html covers the Google docs - where the above is more a clone of the Google Books previewer http://books.google.com/books .

  • “Unplugged” LIDNUG online talk with me on Monday (April 16th)

    - by ScottGu
This coming Monday (April 16th) I’m doing another online LIDNUG session.  The talk will be from 10am to 11:30am (Pacific Time).  I do these talks a few times a year and they tend to be pretty fun.  Attendees can ask any questions they want to me, and listen to me answer them live via LiveMeeting.  We usually end up having some really good discussions on a wide variety of topics.  Any topic or question is fair game. You can learn more and register to attend the online event for free here. I’ll update this post with a download link to a recorded audio version of the talk after the event is over. Hope to get a chance to chat with some of you there! Scott P.S. In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu

  • Silverlight Firestarter Wrap Up and WCF RIA Services Talk Sample Code

    - by dwahlin
I had a great time attending and speaking at the Silverlight Firestarter event up in Redmond on December 2, 2010. In addition to getting a chance to hang out with a lot of cool people from Microsoft such as Scott Guthrie, John Papa, Tim Heuer, Brian Goldfarb, John Allwright, David Pugmire, Jesse Liberty, Jeff Handley, Yavor Georgiev, Jossef Goldberg, Mike Cook and many others, I also had a chance to chat with a lot of people attending the event and hear about what projects they’re working on which was awesome. If you didn’t get a chance to look through all of the new features coming in Silverlight 5 check out John Papa’s post on the subject. While at the Silverlight Firestarter event I gave a presentation on WCF RIA Services and wanted to get the code posted since several people have asked when it’d be available. The talk can be viewed by clicking the image below. Code from the talk follows as well as additional links. I had a few people ask about the green bracelet on my left hand since it looks like something you’d get from a waterpark. It was used to get us access down a little hall that led backstage and allowed us to go backstage during the event. I thought it looked kind of dorky but it was required to get through security. Sample Code from My WCF RIA Services Talk (To login to the 2 apps use “user” and “P@ssw0rd”. Make sure to do a rebuild of the projects in Visual Studio before running them.) View All Silverlight Firestarter Talks and Scott Guthrie’s Keynote WCF RIA Services SP1 Beta for Silverlight 4 WCF RIA Services Code Samples (including some SP1 samples) Improved binding support in EntitySet and EntityCollection with SP1 (Kyle McClellan’s Blog) Introducing an MVVM-Friendly DomainDataSource: The DomainCollectionView (Kyle McClellan’s Blog) I’ve had the chance to speak at a lot of conferences but never with as many cameras, streaming capabilities, people watching live and overall hype involved. Over 1000 people registered to attend the conference in person at the Microsoft campus and well over 15,000 to watch it through the live stream.  The event started for me on Tuesday afternoon with a flight up to Seattle from Phoenix. My flight was delayed 1 1/2 hours (I seem to be good at booking delayed flights) so I didn’t get up there until almost 8 PM. John Papa did a tech check at 9 PM that night and I was scheduled for 9:30 PM. We basically plugged in my laptop backstage (amazing number of servers, racks and audio devices back there) and made sure everything showed up properly on the projector and the machines recording the presentation. In addition to a dedicated show director, there were at least 5 tech people back stage and at least that many up in the booth running lights, audio, cameras, and other aspects of the show. I wish I would’ve taken a picture of the backstage setup since it was pretty massive – servers all over the place. I definitely gained a new appreciation for how much work goes into these types of events. Here’s what the room looked like right before my tech check– not real exciting at this point. That’s Yavor Georgiev (who spoke on WCF Services at the Firestarter) in the background. We had plenty of monitors to reference during the presentation. Two monitors for slides (right and left side) and a notes monitor. The 4th monitor showed the time and they’d type in notes to us as we talked (such as “You’re over time!” in my case since I went around 4 minutes over :-)). Wednesday morning I went back on campus at Microsoft and watched John Papa film a few Silverlight TV episodes with Dave Campbell and Ryan Plemons.   Next I had the chance to watch the dry run of the keynote with Scott Guthrie and John Papa. We were all blown away by the demos shown since they were even better than expected. Starting at 1 PM on Wednesday I went over to Building 35 and listened to Yavor Georgiev (WCF Services), Jaime Rodriguez (Windows Phone 7), Jesse Liberty (Data Binding) and Jossef Goldberg and Mike Cook (Silverlight Performance) give their different talks and we all shared feedback with each other which was a lot of fun. Jeff Handley from the RIA Services team came afterwards and listened to me give a dry run of my WCF RIA Services talk. He had some great feedback that I really appreciated getting. That night I hung out with John Papa and Ward Bell and listened to John walk through his keynote demos. I also got a sneak peak of the gift given to Dave Campbell for all his work with Silverlight Cream over the years. It’s a poster signed by all of the key people involved with Silverlight: Thursday morning I got up fairly early to get to the event center by 8 AM for speaker pictures. It was nice and quiet at that point although outside the room there was a huge line of people waiting to get in.     At around 8:30 AM everyone was let in and the main room was filled quickly. Two other overflow rooms in the Microsoft conference center (Building 33) were also filled to capacity. At around 9 AM Scott Guthrie kicked off the event and all the excitement started! From there it was all a blur but it was definitely a lot of fun. All of the sessions for the Silverlight Firestarter were recorded and can be watched here (including the keynote). Corey Schuman, John Papa and I also released 11 lab exercises and associated videos to help people get started with Silverlight. Definitely check them out if you’re interested in learning more! - by user1315279
I am thinking of going directly to companies and then giving them resume directly rather than by email. I know 60% of comapnies don't like it but there is still 40% of getting into something. My few friends have landed the jobs this way. I just want to know that when i reach the company , should i ask the receptionist for manager and talk directly to manager or first i should talk to receptionsist and tell her what i want. May be receptionist won't call the manager if she knew my intenstion. how should i proceed. Please help. I am thinking even if i can get some free internship for 2-3 months even that will be good. so that i can get my foot in. Is that ok to ask for internship or company may have problem with that

  • Filtering by entity key name in Google App Engine on Python

    - by Bemmu
On Google App Engine to query the data store with Python, one can use GQL or Entity.all() and then filter it. So for example these are equivalent gql = "SELECT * FROM User WHERE age >= 18" db.GqlQuery(gql) and query = User.all() query.filter("age >=", 18) Now, it's also possible to query things by key name. I know that in GQL you do it like this gql = "SELECT * FROM User WHERE __key__ >= Key('User', 'abc')" db.GqlQuery(gql) But how would you now use filter to do the same? query = User.all() query.filter("__key__ >=", ?????)

  • Google chrome extension: local storage

    - by Rohan
Hi there I'm developing an extension for Google Chrome, and have run into some trouble.I created an options.html page and added it to the manifest.json file. The page shows properly. I saved the options, and then went back to the page on which the extension is supposed to run. Unfortunately, the Local storage for the options was returning a 'null' instead of the option. If I set the local storage option directly from the extension's JS script, it works fine but not if it was set from the options page. Any idea how i can access the options.html local storage values from my Javascript file in the extension? thanks!

  • How to model a social news feed on Google App Engine

    - by PEZ
We want to implement a "News feed" where a user can see messages broadcasted by her friends, sorted with newest message first. But the feed should reflect changes in her friends list. (If she adds new friends, messages from those should be included in the feed, and if she removes friends their messages should not be included.) If we use the pubsub-test example and attach a recipient list to each message this means a lot of manipulation of the message recipients lists when users connect and disconnect friends. We first modeled publish-subscribe "fan out" using conventional RDBMS thinking. It seemed to work at first, but then, since the IN operator works the way it does, we quickly realized we couldn't continue on that path. We found Brett Slatkin's presentation from last years Google I/O and we have now watched it a few times but it isn't clear to us how to do it with "dynamic" recipient lists. What we need are some hints on how to "think" when modeling this.
