Fucking I'm in Visual Studio trying to get work done, and the piece of shit keeps telling me "LOL VSHost.exe crashed!"   I prefer the sound scheme of Windows 7 HP to be set to "No Sounds" ALL the time. The problem is, when I switch themes, the themes switch sound schemes also. I know I can go in and disable/change to "No Sounds" every time by hand, but is there a way to turn it off and keep it off, regardless of the theme? Thanks!

• Putty can't connect to USB modem on Windows 7

  I'm trying to configure caller id on a USB modem connected to a Windows 7 x32 machine. Hyperterminal isn't available so I downloaded the latest version of Putty and am using the Serial option. I'm using the modem's COM port details from Device Manager (COM5, 115200 baud), but when I open the putty session it just hangs with the cursor at the top left hand corner. Hitting the Enter key does nothing. Any ideas??

• How to prevent windows from being resized?

  Adobe Audition is really stupid in that when you change the size of the window, and then change it back to the original size, all the frame positions are lost and you have to tediously reposition them by hand. I'd like to make it completely impossible to ever resize the window, just keep it maximized at all times. If I accidentally click "Restore" or drag the title bar, it should either ignore it, or move around the screen while staying the same size. Is there any way to do this?

  I want to do: echo "something" >> /etc/config_file But, since only the root user has write permission to this file, I can't do that. But this: sudo echo "something" >> /etc/config_file also doesn't work. Is there any way to append to a file in that situation without having to first open it with a sudo'd editor and then appending the new content by hand?

• Grounded outlet on external hard drive.

  Is there any value in getting an external hard drive with a grounded power supply? Would grounding the drive protect it from a static jolt from my hand when I pick it up? I've only really ever used the huge 5.25" external housings (they usually have an integrated power supply and use the standard heavy PSU cable with ground), and I need some more but noticed while shopping that the current trend is towards smaller enclosures with the external brick (and hardly ever grounded).

• Can I have nginx put stuff on memcached?

  It is my understanding that nginx can query memcached for data that it serves, but you have to place them there using some other (homegrown) program. So the question is, can I have nginx fetch data from the backend and place them into memcached for future use for certain locations? Sort of not having to place all files from /images in it "by hand" but having them (mem)cached after being fetched for the first time? Any backend other than memcached would suffice also.

  I see lots of documentation on how to manually set up a network bridge and then manually add vm's tun devices to these bridges and then write a shell script that glues it all together. lots of work, very manual, and not impressive. On the other hand if you want to use NAT to KVM+libvirt VMs to the network you just click the new network button in the virt-manager gui and relax. Am I missing "the easy way" of causing a VM to share the physical network with the host?

• How do I convert a Mac OS Filemaker 2 database to a recent FM or Bento db, preserving the relations

This is for a friend's legacy database that tracks monthly fees from a list of clients. I have the original FM database file on hand, but not the machine it ran on with the old version of Filemaker 2. Recent versions won't import it, saying it's too old.   I have a full sized ATX case with several fans, including one on the door/removable side. This fan makes the "door" rattle or vibrate loudly when the fan runs at full speed, such as at startup. I can stop the rattle temporarily by placing my hand on the "door", or pushing an object next to it. Do you have any suggestions for a permanent solution? Note: The "door" in question is a slide out panel with two twist screws at the back to hold it in.

  My users are running on windows XP 32bit. normally WSUS automatically download and notify them to select which update want to install in the past they were in local administrator rights,now I reduce them to user rights so now they can't see the yellow notification said updated are available. Is there a way to give users permission to see the yellow notification and they can select updates by hand without local admin rights or power users? Any advice would be appreciated Thanks

On the other hand, its ease of use - having a simple client on either end, and it just 'working' with full control on my end is nice- the quality however is terrible - I'm wondering if there's any controllable streaming remote music serve for windows that will let me pick the bitrate it sends at, or uses whatever bitrate the original file is in, and just sends it, and has itself controllable at the client end, and will work acceptably over a wlan connection

• Windows Server 2003 port forwarding

  Using the "netsh interface portproxy" I added a port forwarding to a Windows Server 2k3. The command "netsh interface portproxy show all" shows the added forwarding. On the other hand, any client connecting to the incoming port will receive a "connection refused" message. netstat also doesn't show the incoming port as listening. The machine firewall is disabled. There is any other way to setup port forwarding on Windows or debugging tips?
