• System crashed while upgrading, now unable to recover. Please help

  Yesterday while upgrading from 11.4 to 11.10, due to power cut my system crashed. Ubuntu is unable to boot. While booting I get two options in grub, one is for recovery mode and the other is for normal ubuntu booting (and others are also thr for mem check and booting to windows). When I try to boot it normally, it pauses booting while displaying ' Checking battery statues' . Though i am not using a laptop, I am on a desktop. And In recovery mode the menu has 4 options - resume boot, fsck , remount and root ( to goto shell prompt) . If I go to shell and type ' apt-get dist upgrade' , it shows - W: not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock E:unable to write to /var/cache/apt E:The package lists or status files could not be parsed or opened. Please instruct me to recover from this situation.

• Windows Updates - Does Not Install, how can I remove it

  Everytime I shutdown my Windows XP, it comes up with the following screen which says "Turn Off with Installing Updates" (Of course, it also gives me an option as follows, "Click here to turn off without installing updates.") Now, when I do normal shutdown asking it to Install Updates and Turn it Off. It does not install the updates and every subsequent time I try to shut down the PC, it still comes with the prompt "Turn Off with Installing Updates". I managed to find out that this install was this "Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) update 1 of 1 .... " Now, when I click on the Installing Updates icon (the yellow icon, that appears on the task bar near the clock), and Install it. It tries to install and it fails. Now, why is this install alone failing? Second, if we are not able to ascertain why this is failing, can we at least ensure that it is removed from the list of possible installs so that everytime it does not ask me to install it.

With some Google Search with LAMP installation, they listed with yum install httpd I had check inside /etc/init.d/ already had httpd I try to run yum install httpd http-devel It shows not yet installed. What will happen if I install yum version? What should I do? What is the best practise? Should I remove the Web Server install by default with CentOS? My goal is install LAMP (PHP v5.2.17).

  I want to install matplotlib on OS X. If possible, using homebrew. I installed Python 2.7.1 using brew install python, I modified my path to use it I installed pip using brew install pip I installed numpy 1.5.1 using pip install numpy I installed scipy 0.8.0 using pip install scipy This is where it gets hairy. pip install matplotlib will fetch the wrong version of matplotlib, which is incompatible with the recent version of numpy. The solution is to fetch the correct version of matplotlib manually: pip install -f http://sourceforge.net/projects/matplotlib/files/matplotlib/matplotlib-1.0.1/matplotlib-1.0.1.tar.gz matplotlib But, that version fails to compile since it can't find the freetype headers: In file included from src/ft2font.cpp:1: src/ft2font.h:14:22: error: ft2build.h: No such file or directory These headers are actually installed in /usr/X11/include as part of the X11 developer tools. So, how can I make matplotlib use these headers?

• Install php-fpm + php-mysql + MariaDB on Centos from repos

  I try to take CentOS 6.4 x64 and install nginx w/ php-fpm on it (and that's easy part, no problem at all), then add php-mysql package and MariaDB as a mysql drop-in replacement. And here I face the hang... I've added epel, nginx and remi repos, add priority=10 line to its .repo files, and now as I install MariaDB-server the dependency also brings me MariaDB's "common" package. Then, as I try to install php-mysql, I see file /usr/share/mysql/french/errmsg.sys from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.27-1.x86_64 conflicts with file from package mysql-libs-5.5.28-1.el6.remi.x86_64 warnings. If I deinstall MariaDB server, I'm able to install mysql-libs and php-mysql, but it won't allow me to install MariaDB later. Is there any way to escape that (infinite) loop? I believe the solution is simple but still can't see it. Please help to install php-fpm + php-mysql and MariaDB as DB server!

• Can't locate in @inc during CPAN dependency install performed not as root.

  While trying to do: perl -I'/v1/data/site_perl' -MCPAN -e 'install Log::Dispatch'; I continue to get "Can't locate Params/Validate.pm in @INC." When looking at the output, /v1/data/site_perl is NOT in the @INC displayed, even though I used -I. I am not root so I have changed my CPAN config so that: 'makepl_arg' => q[LIB=/v1/data/site_perl INSTALLSITEMAN1DIR=/v1/data/site_perl/man/man1 INSTALLSITEMAN3DIR=/v1/data/site_perl/man/man3 INSTALLMAN1DIR=/v1/data/site_perl/man/man1 INSTALLMAN3DIR=/v1/data/site_perl/man/man3] So even LIB is set. In a basic script I have: use lib '/v1/data/site_perl'; use Params::Validate; With no problems. How do I make the Log::Dispatch use lib /v1/data/site_perl without a force install? What am I missing?

• Can't install Parallels Tools on Debian 7.2.0

  (Parallels Desktop 9, latest version) As per instructions, I switch to root: $ su - root $ whoami root $ echo $EUID 0 and then execute the installer: $ cd /media/cdrom0 $ ./install and I get this error: sudo: unable to execute ./install: Permission denied What? I'm root! What's with this? I double check to make sure the execute bit is set: $ ls -lA | grep install$ -r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 17284 Oct 25 09:22 install Yep. People online are saying that you need to drag the install script to the terminal after typing sudo. So I do that, and this command is what's formed: $ sudo '/media/cdrom0/install' sudo: unable to execute /media/cdrom0/install: Permission denied What's the solution here?

However after when trying to install the SQL Server portion we consistently fail the rule SharePoint version requirement for PowerPivot for SharePoint' validation in theSQL Server` install process. • Modifying the install environment for RH-like installations

  I am trying to modify the basic installation environment (ie, what Anaconda runs in) for a customized CentOS distribution. For the first try, I would just like to modify a few of the splash images. My initial attempt to do this entailed: 1) Mount images/install.img to a directory ~/img/ 2) Copy all files from img/ to ~/tmpimg/ 3) Modify the splash images 4) mkisofs -o ~/final/install.img 5) cp ~/final/install.img back to my ~/cdroot/ folder and remake the iso. However, the generated .img in step 4 doesn't even come close to matching the file size from the original install.img (meaning that install.img must be created in some other fashion using compression), and it fails when I boot my iso. What settings should I be using to make the install.img file? Is there some other technique for modifying CentOS install environments?

  I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, Ultimate. I'm running into a problem where, if my computer is on long enough, I am unable to install any software. For example, if I reboot and try to install something, for the most part, it will succeed. if I try and install something after a few hours/days, it will always fail. Sometimes stating that "a previous install failed..." or "an install is already taking place..." even though there is nothing being installed. This also seems to be making my Windows updates fail at a pretty regular rate. Any ideas?

  I have a soundcard that I'd like to use and I've been trying to install it and being a new Ubuntu user, I get about half way through this in the Terminal and it stops cooperating with me...   I have a shell script to automatically configure new Ubuntu virtual machines for my purposes. I would like this script to install and enable unattended-upgrades, but I cannot figure out how to do so without user interaction. The usual way to enable upgrades is dpkg-reconfigure unattended-upgrades, but of course that is interactive. The noninteractive front end avoids asking any questions at all, and the text front end seems bound and determined to do its I/O with the tty and not with stdin/stdout.

• Ubuntu Install 11.10 doesn't recognize Windows 7 installation with new HDD

  Replaced my crashed HDD with a Seagate 2TB Sata (bought from a company who pulled it from a working computer, OS unknown) and did a fresh install of Windows 7. Windows shows 100MB boot partition (bootable NTFS) and 200GB Windows partition (NTFS), the rest is unallocated. Win7 Disk Management says the partitioning type is Master Boot Record. Win7 boots and runs fine. Ubuntu 11.10 Install procedes to Allocate Drive Space screen and should say This computer currently has Windows 7 on it. What would you like to do? Instead, it says something like Install doesn't detect any existing OS on this computer. When I click on Something else, the partition table shows only the unallocated space of 1.8TB. Ubuntu Disk Utility says Partitioning: Master Boot Record, but GParted Live says Partition Table: gpt. It was my original intention to have the Windows boot partition and application partition, then install Ubuntu 11.10 using boot, root, swap, and home partitions, and maybe another partition just for data (mostly photos). Currently, I would be happy if I could just get Ubuntu installed along with Win7. I am aware of the MBR limits of 3 Primary partitions and 1 Extended partition. I suspect that my new HDD is partitioned for GPT and that is why Ubuntu can't see the Win7 installation. Am I on the right track? I was going to use Windows Disk Management to convert GPT to MBR but I only have the one drive on my AMD-64 mini-computer and it says I have to empty the drive of all partitions before I can access the Convert command. And I can't find any bootable software that would allow me to do that conversion. • ubiquity "hangs" on first step

  Trying to install 11.04 daily for the last couple days but, no matter what I try (wifi connected, wifi not connected, disk blank, disk prepartitioned...), if just "hangs" at the first window (pick your language) with a non-stop hourglass after hitting next. I ran into a different issue when trying to use the alternate installer image. This is on a Stinkpad T42. Should ubiquity at least tell me whats going on?!? I tried to find a log but /var/log/installer* isn't present.

I have this warning error that appears on my desktop in the form of a red icon with a line through it and it states: An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. I tried to repair automatically through ubuntu software center and I kept getting errors or it just didn't seem to work. • Does upgrading a kernel automatically enable trim?

  Simple question, I have some servers that were running 10.04 that I upgraded to 12.04. So they were installed using 10.04 (kernel 2.6.32* I believe) and the version of ext4 that shipped then. By upgrading to 12.04 and the newer kernel, does that enable TRIM automatically? (Do I need to add 'discard' to the fstab?) Or do I need to do a clean install of 12.04 to get TRIM functionality on those drives.

  I have just installed a fresh copy of 12.04.1 64bit. I formatted my PC completely and enabled updates during the installation. After the installation was complete, I went on updating my software. However, when I wanted to install the additional drivers using the Additional Drivers tool (namely "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver"), it gave me this error: SystemError: E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. The same error shows up if I try installing the post-release updates driver. Installing the drivers from the terminal results in this output: XXXXXX:~$ sudo apt-get install fglrx [sudo] password for XXXXX: Reading package lists... • Vmware server - 3d graphics upgrade like WKS 7 and vmware player

  Hi all Anybody have an idea as to when VMWARE SERVER will have an upgrade to support 3-d graphics etc. I have created some W7 VM's under WKS7 and an upgraded vmware tools -- the W7 VM's run full aero etc. I believe that vmware tools and graphics for VM's running under vmware server are at the WKS 6.5 level -- hence problems can occur. Any info on an upgrade. Cheers jimbo

• Upgrade only one version of XP to Windows 8 on a dual boot computer

  I have a computer running Windows XP Pro 32-bit and 64-bit in dual boot. I need to retain Windows XP 32-bit Pro, as I have expensive software that will only run on that specific version. I want to upgrade my 64-bit installation of XP to Windows 8 without losing the 32-bit installation. If I simply use the ISO to upgrade from within my XP 64-bit installation, will I retain dual boot for both XP 32-bit and Windows 8?

  I really hope someone can help me as I am stuck and can't figure out what to do next. I am trying to upgrade from windows xp sp3 (Media Centre edition) Steps I've followed: Clean install from XP SP3 Professional disc Installed all drivers downloaded upgrade advisor and ran where it just closed after like 2 seconds without even showing the screen changed to have a selected startup after finding guidance on the internet, this still did not make a difference Does anybody have an idea? I've looked for logs but can't find anything.

• Memory upgrade for Toshiba P20 S203?

  I've had an offer of a 256MB PC2700 SODIMM, apparently from an iBook, to upgrade a Toshiba laptop. Is that suitable? I've seen "DDR 266 SODIMM" on sale as the official upgrade memory. How in general should I work this out? I've long since lost track of what memory goes with what system.

  My dad already has a copy of Win 7 Pro (full). If I buy the upgrade edition of Win 7 Pro (student discount), could I use the full disk to install, then enter the new, upgrade key code to activate it? I can't seem to get a student discount for the full version.
