  I have a server serving up a JS file a few million times a day using apache2. Some of my users would like the JS to be gzipped. Does anyone know how apache2 mod_deflate handles compression of static files? Will it compress the js for each request(in which case I'd be worried about cpu load)? If it does, is there a way to pre-compress the JS files so apache2 wouldn't have to do this for each file?

• Install Ubuntu 12.04 in UEFI mode on a HP Pavilion dv6-6c40ca

  I have recently (as of July 2012) bought a HP Pavilion dv6-6c40ca laptop. It came pre-installed with Windows 7 on an MBR. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on it on a GPT partition in what I think is BIOS emulation mode. I made a BIOS-Grub partition so the install didn't fail. That is what it is for .. right? Now I want to upgrade to UEFI mode. How would I Install Ubuntu 12.04 in UEFI mode on a HP Pavilion dv6-6c40ca. Or is it impossible? My laptop, despite its new age may not be UEFI 2.0+ capable. If it isn't how can I install a software UEFI (i.e. a DUET such as the one by tianocore). Or is this too impossible?   I'm trying to understand the behavior of the Linux pdflush daemon when: The page cache is initially pretty much empty There is a large amount of free memory The system starts undergoing heavy write load My understanding right now is that the vm.dirty_ratio and vm.dirty_background_ratio that control page cache flushing behavior are with respect to the present size of the page cache, which means that my writes will flush earlier than they would if the page cache was pre-populated (even with dummy data from some random file), and thus throughput will be lower. Is this accurate?

  Is it possible to create an HVM guest in XenServer 5.5 that uses PV drivers for disk and network without being fully paravirutalized? This should give me decent performance from the VM without having to jump through hoops to create a PV guest when a pre-built template doesn't exist. Since PV drivers exist for Windows, and XenServer provides templates for windows that use HVM virtualization this must be possible, I just don't see how to configure this myself.

• Cisco ASA: Allowing and Denying VPN Access based on membership to an AD group

  I have a Cisco ASA 5505 connecting to an Active Directory server for VPN authentication. Usually we'd restrict this to a particular OU, but in this case users which need access are spread across multiple OUs. So, I'd like to use a group to specify which users have remote access. I've created the group and added the users, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to deny users which aren't in that group. Right now, if someone connects they get assigned the correct group policy "companynamera" if they are in that group, so the LDAP mapping is working. However, users who are not in that group still authenticate fine, and their group policy becomes the LDAP path of their first group, i.e. CN=Domain Users,CN=Users,DC=example,DC=com, and then are still allowed access. How do I add a filter so that I can map everything that isn't "companynamera" to no access?   Pre-Snow Leopard, I could use the following command: defaults write com.apple.loginwindow Finder /Applications/My-replacement-app-such-as-Terminal.app Which would a.) replace the Finder launching at login with an application of my choice, and b.) cause that application to launch instead of Finder when all other applications are quit. Is it possible to do this in Snow Leopard, or has this behavior been deprecated? (I don't want to disable Finder altogether, I just don't want it to start at login.)

• "Busy" icon not spinning in Windows 7

  Hi there, I just got a new Sony Vaio with pre-installed Windows 7 and I noticed that the busy icon (that is, that little blue wheel that stays next to the mouse pointer when Windows is processing something) doesn't spin, ever. • Can I get Linux into 'Party/Kiosk-Mode' like status?

• How to record a "macro" that saves web pages as PDF in OSX

  I frequently save pages as PDF from Chrome on OSX. The page is apple-P then click the PDF button and the "Save as PDF.." menu item. I always use the pre-filled filename and save in the default directory. Is it possible to save this as an automator script? If that is possible I woulld sure like to add this as a button on Chrome somewhere so I can just "save this for reading later" Thanks for any help.

  How can the Windows + S keyboard shortcut be disabled on Windows 8.1? I had Win+S mapped to take a screen capture in Windows 8 using Evernote. (not using Windows built-in PrintScr to capture the entire screen): After the update, Win+S always brings up the Search panel: A solution using RegEdit would be fine. I just need it disabled so that other capture programs, such as Evernote and Greenshot can use it (as before, pre-Win 8.1).
