• Setting up shared connection

  I have a network that is connected to the internet via a switch connected to a router. I have it setup like this so I can work on the new network without causing problems on the old. Anyway, I'm trying to enable internet connection sharing. Internet comes to server like this: Modem - Router - Switch - Ubuntu 11.10 (Eth0) I want to share the connection through Eth1 (Eth1 - Managed Switch - Clients). Here is my config for /etc/network/interfaces: I have a DHCP server running on Eth1. Here is my config: ddns-update-style none; option domain-name "myserver.local"; option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.2, 8.8.8.8; default-lease-time 600; max-lease-time 7200; authoritative; subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { interface eth1; range 192.168.1.3 192.168.1.254; option routers 192.168.1.1; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255; } Here is /etc/network/interfaces: # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp #Used for internal network auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 network 192.168.1.0 Here is /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 myserver.isp.com server 192.168.1.2 server.myserver.local server myserver.local In /etc/sysctl.conf, I've set the following: net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 Finally, in /etc/rc.local, I've set the following: /sbin/iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT /sbin/iptables --table nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE When I ping 8.8.8.8 (google's DNS) from a client that is authenticated with my DHCP server (they have been assigned a local ip, like 192.168.1.10), I get a timeout. How can I debug this further to figure out where my problem is?

You can also read my previous post on why I ditched jQuery Mobile. This is the beta for POP Forums v10, with the mobile special sauce. It requires ASP.NET MVC 4 RC, which you can download here. Uses a very light weight CSS and Javascript package to provide a touch-friendly interface for mobile devices. Numbers are formatted (sensitive to culture) when 1,000 or higher. CSS is more integration friendly, and specific to the ForumContainer element. Mail delivery from queue is now parallel, so you can specify a sending interval, and the number of messages to process on each interval. Background "services" refactored, and will only run with a call on app start to PopForumsActivation.StartServices(). This is partly to facilitate future use in Web farms/multiple Web roles. Update to jQuery v1.7.1. Replaced use of .live() with .on() in script, pursuant to jQuery update, which deprecates .live(). FIX: Bug in topic repository around caching keys for single-server data layer. FIX: Pager links on recent topics pointed to incorrect route. FIX: Deleting a post didn't update last user/post time. FIX: Ditched attempt at writing to event log with super failures, since almost no one has permission in production. FIX: Bug in grayed-out fields in admin mail setup. FIX: Weird color profiles would break loading of images for resize. FIX: TOS text on account sign-up was double encoded. Known issues None yet, but ditching jQuery Mobile from the previous beta turned out to be a good decision.

• Add a Real-Time Earth Wallpaper App to Ubuntu with xplanetFX

  Are you tired of the same old wallpaper on your Ubuntu desktop? Now you can go from blah to literally spacious, real-time styled views of Earth with the xplanetFX Wallpaper App for Linux. You can conveniently access the “file type” downloads, screenshots, and jump-to links all on the front page. For our example we downloaded the .deb setup file on our system. The setup file will need to download three additional files to complete the setup process. After those are downloaded all dependencies will have been met and you can complete the installation process. Once that is done you can find xplanetFX by going to the Accessories Section of your Ubuntu Menu. This is what the main control window looks like when you start xplanetFX for the first time. You should take a few moments to look through the various tabs and tweak the settings for items like location, screen resolution, timing, auto-start, etc. When you are done click on Execute and within a few moments your desktop will have a fresh new look! • Update to kernel 3.12 seems to fail: uname reports old rc7

  I currently run Xubuntu 13.10 with kernel 3.12 rc7. Today I tried updating to the latest 3.12 kernel (non-rc), but this seems to fail. When installing the image and headers I see the following error passing by: ... run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 3.12.0-031200-generic /boot/vmlinuz-3.12.0-031200-generichis Error! The dkms.conf for this module includes a BUILD_EXCLUSIVE directive which does not match this kernel/arch. This indicates that it should not be built. ... After rebooting, when I do uname -r or cat /proc/version it tells me that I'm still running on the old rc7 kernel. Since my microphone wasn't working on my Sony Vaio Pro 13 I did download and install the latest ALSA drivers using the oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms package which seem to fix the problem (with the mic). Maybe this has something to do with it? I also tried removing the package using sudo apt-get purge oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms but no success.

• Run a startup script with lightdm

  I have a tablet PC and the graphics driver doesn't support xrandr, so in order to rotate the screen I run a script which changes the Xorg.conf file and then restarts lightdm. I also have a script which uses xsetwacom and xinput to change the rotation of the input devices so that the match the new orientation. I've learned how to get the script to run when I login, but I'd like it to run before I login, so that I don't have to enable auto-login with lightdm. I do need it to run though, or the input (touch and pen) is rotated with respect to the screen, so that when I touch the screen the input is in a completely different area, making it really difficult to use the onscreen keyboard. I've looked at other questions on this site. I've tried putting my script in /etc/Xsession.d but that didn't seem to work. I also tried putting it in /etc/rc.local but I think that is the wrong place, nothing seems to happen. I've also tried googling for lightm script hooks, and various other google terms. Any suggestions? Edit 1: After doing some research, it seems to me that it might not be that I want to run a script with lightdm, but rather with the lighdm greeter (in this case, I think the unity-greeter?). Are there any script-hooks for the unity-greeter?

• basic beginning emacs questions - install latest version and pick appropriate UI

  I'm running the latest Kubuntu (12.04 beta 2) and I would like to run the latest emacs (currently v24). The repos are one version behind. What's the best way to install v24 or later (and avoid future version conflicts)? Also, is there any reason not to aways use the GUI version of emacs if X is running? For example, could I set the GUI emacs version as the default text editor and use it to edit cron jobs (crontab -e)? I'm assuming the answer is yes, but since I haven't done that yet (my default editor is nano), I want to check if there are reasons I should leave nano as the default editor. Usually when I'm working on the command line I end up using nano. Now that I think about it, I have no idea why I keep doing that. Is there any downside to calling a GUI editor when working in an X terminal? EDIT: I briefly tested these two versions GNU Emacs 24.0.94.1 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.3.20) from GNU Emacs 23.3.1 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) installed by default in Kubuntu. This post explains some of the differences between versions. Unfortunately (for me) the defaults installed version (23.3.1, 23.3+1-1ubuntu9) is the nox version. • Unable to install mysql in ubuntu

  I purged my existing mysql-server from ubuntu and re-installed the same. This was due there was an upgrade from my ubuntu and I was unable to start my sql-server. After cleaned up and taking backup of my data , I re-insalled mysql. During installaion I received following message popup.   I got asked today if I could publish a roadmap for thinktecture IdentityServer (idrsv in short). Well – I got a lot of feedback after B1 and one of the biggest points here was the data access layer. So I made two changes: I moved to configuration database access code to EF 4.1 code first. That makes it much easier to change the underlying database. So it is now just a matter of changing the connection string to use real SQL Server instead of SQL Compact. Important when you plan to do scale out. I included the ASP.NET Universal Providers in the download. This adds official support for SQL Azure, SQL Server and SQL Compact for the membership, roles and profile features. Unfortunately the Universal Provider use a different schema than the original ASP.NET providers (that sucks btw!) – so I made them optional. If you want to use them go to web.config and uncomment the new provider. Then there are some other small changes: The relying party registration entries now have added fields to add extra data that you want to couple with the RP. One use case could be to give the UI a hint how the login experience should look like per RP. This allows to have a different look and feel for different relying parties. I also included a small helper API that you can use to retrieve the RP record based on the incoming WS-Federation query string. WS-Federation single sign out is now conforming to the spec. I made certificate based endpoint identities for SSL endpoints optional. This caused some problems with configuration and versioning of existing clients. I hope I can release the RC in the next days. If there are no major issues, there will be RTM very soon!

• How do I boot into console mode (redux)

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04. This question was asked some time ago How do I disable the boot splash screen? but the answers didn't work for me. The standard way to boot into console mode used to be to edit /etc/default/grub and set GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text" This worked fine until I ran the fix proposed in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure in order to get sound to work. Since then, I have disabled the boot-splash-screen, but I can avoid what I presume is the lightdm login prompt screen. All I want to do is disable this gui and be prompted with a console login prompt. (Shouldnt be so hard should it???) I read in three 33416 mentioned above that there was a bug in lightdm (it wasn't recognizing "text" properly as an option for GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT.) But this discussion happened more than a year ago, and it's surely been fixed. Yet my lightdm is uptodate (so I'm told when I try to update it with apt-get). As suggested in one of the above, I tried sudo update-rc.d -f lightdm remove which resulted in a hung machine. I managed to recover using recovery mode, but now I still get the gui again. Another suggestion is to edit /etc/init/lightdm.override. I've done this and set it to "manual" as suggested, but lightdm simply ignores this. Could somebody suggest how to proceed please? • Camera field of view: 3D projections & trigonometry

  Okay, here goes. I have a camera at (Xc, Yc, Zc.) The Xc and Yc coordinates are latitude/longitude, and the Zc coordinate is an altitude in metres. I have a point at (Xp, Yp, Zp) and a field of view on the camera (Th1, Th2) - where Th1 is horizontal FOV and Th2 is vertical FOV. Given this information, I'd like to: test if the point is visible (i.e. in the camera's FOV) project the point as the camera would see it I've figured out already that the camera's horizontal view at any given distance is tan(Th1) * distance, but I don't know how to test if the point is visible. Accuracy is not critical. I would prefer a simple solution over a complicated solution, if it works well enough. The computations will be performed by a small microcontroller, which isn't very fast at things like trig functions. P.S. this is not homework, I'm doing this for some game development. It will be integrated with the real world, hence the latitude/longitude/altitude. It involves flying real RC planes through virtual hoops (or chasing virtual targets), so I have to project the positions of these hoops on a display.

  One of the 6 sessions I and Mikael Nitell is running on MSDN Live 2010 here in Norway is about Code Quality, and part of that session goes through the use of Code Contracts and Pex.  Both fantastic tools ! They can be used togethers, but are also completely independent from each other, and can be used as a single Code Contracts  has to downloaded separately from VS 2010 (works also on VS 2008).   Start looking at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/devlabs/dd491992.aspx . This download is a free download.   Code Contracts originates form the ideas of Bertrand Meyer – Design by Contract, take a look here. Pex is found on the MSDN Subscription download, so it requires an active MSDN Subscription. Start to get it from here http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/pex/downloads.aspx .  The current version as of 14.4.10 is 0.9, which works with the 2010 RC.  A new version is due this week.  Pex is a tool to generate unit tests, and does this very intelligently.  Perfect to make tests for legacy code, but also to make sure you get all paths tested.  See the Reference information and project startup information.
