• Secure Webservice?

  I'm trying to create a secure webservice (that provides simple database data) with PHP that can be connected to through my Silverlight application. I don't know enough about PHP to be able to see another way to do this. The webservice should only be accessible through the client, and only with the proper username/password. The only two ways I can imagine to do this would be by passing the username/password hash via URL, or use a "hidden form" and do it via POST_. I'm just trying to get past this point, I'm the sole developer on this project and I'm just trying to get past this PHP webservice part so I can get back to being an application programmer :) Normally, I would learn PHP, but I'm on the clock, so I'm just looking for a point in the right direction on how to achieve this!

  I have tried and tried to achieve an SQL injection by making custom queries to the server outside of firefox. Inside the php, all variables are passed into the query in a string like this. Note, by this stage, $_POST has not been touched. mysql_query('INSERT INTO users (password, username) VALUES(' . sha1($_POST['password']) . ',' . $_POST['username'] . ')); Is that a secure way to make a change?

• Secure Desktop Mode effect for java application

  Does anyone now how to achieve a "Secure-Desktop Mode" (effect) such as one gets from the Windows Vista/7 UAC consent-blocks? I assume it is some function which will remove pixels here-and-there (and possibly graying them) and then finally drawing that to screen... I would like to apply it to my application to keep the user from doing anything until the another user connects to the system (but that is besides the point) I would really appreciate the advise. How would I set up my validations such that both belongs_to associations are required BUT also allow for Registration objects to be created in nested forms?

  On this winform application I am writing, I want to secure one menu item from most users. It runs a month-end and cannot be easily backed out if accidentally run. The menu option opens up a window to prompt the user for some information before processing. I don't care where exactly I do the check, but I want to be sure only certain users can run this function. A Google search (on my question title above) didn't turn up anything obvious. Can anyone point me in a direction to pick up who is signed into Windows and how to check if they are authorized?

  After a memory error in my program, I am stuck with a file with a strange filename. It's proving quite resistant to all normal methods to remove files with strange names. Even the ls -i. I couldn't find anymore options, so before reformatting or repairing my filesystem (fsck might help) I thought maybe there is something I missed.   I got exception when I tried to delete one NSManageObject at the event of tableView:commitEditingStyle:forRowAtIndexPath:. This is the exception message: uncaught exception 'NSObjectInaccessibleException', reason: 'The NSManagedObject with ID:0x3d07a30 <x-coredata://0D2CC9CB-042B-496D-B3FE-5F1ED64EAB97/paymentType/p2> has been invalidated.' I tried to get entity object first and then to delete it. The entity looks OK but still the exception was at delete: NSManagedObject *entityToDelete = [fetchedResultsController objectAtIndexPath:indexPath]; [mangedObjectContext deleteObject:entityToDelete]; // Exception again. I am not sure if the entity object retrieved from the fetchedResultsController(NSFetchedResultsController type) cannot be deleted? If so, is there any other way to get the entity object for deleting? I found that in the Apple's Core Data Tutorial for iPhone with events example, there is on NSArray to hold event entity objects. I am not sure if that's necessory to use NSArray to hold my local entity objects and then use it for deleting?

• Boost causes an invalid block while overloading new/delete operators

  Hi, I have a problem which appears to a be an invalid memory block that happens during a Boost call to Boost:runtime:cla::parser::~parser. When that global delete is called on that object, C++ asserts on the memory block as an invalid: dbgdel.cpp(52): /* verify block type */ _ASSERTE(_BLOCK_TYPE_IS_VALID(pHead->nBlockUse)); An investigation I did revealed that the problem happened because of a global overloading of the new/delete operators. Those overloadings are placed in a separate DLL. I discovered that the problem happens only when that DLL is compiled in RELEASE while the main application is compiled in DEBUG. So I thought that the Release/Debug build flavors might have created a problem like this in Boost/CRT when overloading new/delete operators. So I then tried to explicitly call to _malloc_dbg and _free_dbg withing the overloading functions even in release mode, but it didn't solve the invalid heap block problem. Any idea what the root cause of the problem is? is that situation solvable? I should stress that the problem began only when I started to use Boost. Before that CRT never complained about any invalid memory block. So could it be an internal Boost bug? Thanks!

• Sql Serve - Cascade delete has multiple paths

  Hi all, I have two tables, Results and ComparedResults. ComparedResults has two columns which reference the primary key of the Results table. My problem is that if a record in Results is deleted, I wish to delete all records in ComparedResults which reference the deleted record, regardless of whether it's one column or the other (and the columns may reference the same Results row). A row in Results may deleted directly or through cascade delete caused by deleting in a third table. Googling this could indicate that I need to disable cascade delete and rewrite all cascade deletes to use triggers instead. Is that REALLY nessesary? I'd be prepared to do much restructuring of the database to avoid this, as my main area is OO programming, and databases should 'just work'. It is hard to see, however, how a restructuring could help as I would just move the problem around... Or am I missing something? I am also a bit at a loss as to why my initial construct should even be a problem for the Sql Server?! Any comments welcome and much appreciated! Anders, Denmark

  I am starting to play with (Fluent) nHibernate and I am wondering if someone can help with the following. I'm sure it's a total noob question. I want to do: delete from TABX where name = 'abc' where table TABX is defined as: ID int name varchar(32) ... I build the code based on internet samples: using (ITransaction transaction = session.BeginTransaction()) { IQuery query = session.CreateQuery("FROM TABX WHERE name = :uid") .SetString("uid", "abc"); session.Delete(query.List<Person>()[0]); transaction.Commit(); } but alas, it's generating two queries (one select and one delete). I want to do this in a single statement, as in my original SQL. What is the correct way of doing this? Also, I noticed that in most samples on the internet, people tend to always wrap all queries in transactions. Why is that? If I'm only running a single statement, that seems an overkill. Do people tend to just mindlessly cut and paste, or is there a reason beyond that? For example, in my query above, if I do manage it to get it from two queries down to one, i should be able to remove the begin/commit transaction, no? if it matters, I'm using PostgreSQL for experimenting.

  Hi, I have a class which inherits from CListCtrl class, say class list. I have another class dlg, which inherits from CDialog. Class dlg contains an instance of class list. I have got a delete button in class dlg, on which I delete the selected item in listCtrl and do lots of other processing. I want the same functionality on delete key. I added OnKeyDown() fn is my class list, where I can capture VK_DELETE key. But my problem is that, how do I do otehr processing that I need to do in dialog class. All that processing is dlg class based not list class based. I have many such dlg classes with different data and in every dlg class processing is different. I tried capturing VK_DELETE in dialog class, but it doesn't capture it if focus is on list class. I am totally stuck and have no idea, how to do this. Please give me some idea how i can do this.   My problem is deleting a node from linked list. For example when user entered aaa to delete, delete function should find the node with outer_list->word = aaa and delete this node and reconnect the list again. I tried the below code to do this. but After finding and deleting I'm losing the list. I don't know what's wrong. • Access 2007 not allowing user to delete record in subform

  Good day... The root of my issue is that there's no context menu allowing the user to delete a row from a form. The "delete" button on the ribbon is also disabled. In Access 2003, apparently this function was available, but since our recent "upgrade" to 2007 (file is still in MDB format) it's no longer there. Please keep in mind I'm not an Access dev, nor did I create this app - I inherited support for it. ;) Now for the details, and what I've tried. The form in question is a subform on a larger form. I've tried turning "AllowDeletes" on on both forms. I've checked the toolbar and ribbon properties on the forms to see if they loaded some custom stuff, but no. I've tried changing the "record locks" to "on edit", no joy. I examined the query to see if it was "too complicated" to permit a delete - as far as I can tell, it's a very simple two (linked) table join. Compared to another form in this app that does permit row deletes, it has a much more complicated (multi-join, built on queries) query. Is there a resource that would describe the required conditions for allowing deletes? Thanks in advance...

  So -i was looking through some articles on creating REST API's. And some of them suggest using all types of HTTP requests: like PUT DELETE POST GET. So - we would create for example index.php and write API this way: $method = $_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD']; $request = split("/", substr(@$_SERVER['PATH_INFO'], 1)); switch ($method) { case 'PUT': ....some put action.... break; case 'POST': ....some post action.... break; case 'GET': ....some get action.... break; case 'DELETE': ....some delete action.... break; } Ok - granted - I don't know much baout web services (yet). But - wouldn't it be easier to just accept JSON object through normal $_POST and then respond in JSON as well. We can easily serialize/deserialize via php's json_encode and json_decode and do whatever we want with that data without having to deal with different HTTP request methods... Am I missing something? UPDATE 1: Ok - after digging through various API's and learning a lot about XML-RPC, JSON-RPC, SOAP, REST I came to a conclusion that this type of API is sound. Actually stack exchange is pretty much using this approach on their sites and I do think that these people know what they are doing Stack Exchange API.

  I understand that the result set from web sql isn't quite an array, more of an object? I'm cycling through a result set and to speed things up I'd like to remove a row once it's been found. I've tried "delete" and "splice", the former does nothing and the latter throws an error.   Social media has created an Always Connected World for us. Recently I enrolled myself to learn new technologies as a student. I had decided to focus on learning and decided not to stay connected on the internet while I am in the learning session. On the second day of the event after the learning was over, I noticed lots of notification from my friend on my various social media handle. He had connected with me on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, YouTube as well SMS, WhatsApp on the phone, Skype messages and not to forget with a few emails. I right away called him up. The problem was very unique – let us hear the problem in his own words. “Pinal – we are in big trouble we are not able to figure out what is going on. Our product details table is continuously loosing rows. Lots of rows have disappeared since morning and we are unable to find why the rows are getting deleted. We have made sure that there is no DELETE command executed on the table as well. The matter of the fact, we have removed every single place the code which is referencing the table. We have done so many crazy things out of desperation but no luck. The rows are continuously deleted in a random pattern. Do you think we have problems with intrusion or virus?” After describing the problems he had pasted few rants about why I was not available during the day. I think it will be not smart to post those exact words here (due to many reasons). Well, my immediate reaction was to get online with him. His problem was unique to him and his team was all out to fix the issue since morning. As he said he has done quite a lot out in desperation. I started asking questions from audit, policy management and profiling the data. Very soon I realize that I think this problem was not as advanced as it looked. There was no intrusion, SQL Injection or virus issue. Well, long story short first - It was a very simple issue of foreign key created with ON UPDATE CASCADE and ON DELETE CASCADE.  CASCADE allows deletions or updates of key values to cascade through the tables defined to have foreign key relationships that can be traced back to the table on which the modification is performed. ON DELETE CASCADE specifies that if an attempt is made to delete a row with a key referenced by foreign keys in existing rows in other tables, all rows containing those foreign keys are also deleted. ON UPDATE CASCADE specifies that if an attempt is made to update a key value in a row, where the key value is referenced by foreign keys in existing rows in other tables, all of the foreign key values are also updated to the new value specified for the key. (Reference: BOL) In simple words – due to ON DELETE CASCASE whenever is specified when the data from Table A is deleted and if it is referenced in another table using foreign key it will be deleted as well. In my friend’s case, they had two tables, Products and ProductDetails. They had created foreign key referential integrity of the product id between the table. Now the as fall was up they were updating their catalogue. When they were updating the catalogue they were deleting products which are no more available. As the changes were cascading the corresponding rows were also deleted from another table. This is CORRECT. The matter of the fact, there is no error or anything and SQL Server is behaving how it should be behaving. The problem was in the understanding and inappropriate implementations of business logic.  What they needed was Product Master Table, Current Product Catalogue, and Product Order Details History tables. However, they were using only two tables and without proper understanding the relation between them was build using foreign keys. If there were only two table, they should have used soft delete which will not actually delete the record but just hide it from the original product table. This workaround could have got them saved from cascading delete issues. I will be writing a detailed post on the design implications etc in my future post as in above three lines I cannot cover every issue related to designing and it is also not the scope of the blog post. More about designing in future blog posts. Once they learn their mistake, they were happy as there was no intrusion but trust me sometime we are our own enemy and this is a great example of it.
