  • Why keyboard layout is acting weird?

    I'm using Ubuntu 12.04. I use English (USA) and Bangla (probhat) layout. Everything regarding keyboard layout was perfect since I've installed Ubuntu about 5 months ago. Suddenly, I can't write bangla anywhere (naming folder etc.) without LibreOffice. when I'm trying to write bangla anywhere only a "square" symbol comes out for each character. Interestingly, when i'm trying to view the keyboard layout, "square" symbol is there instead of each character. Very surprising. Just take a look at the screen shot of the keyboard layout. Really very unusual issue to me.

  • Setting up SANED with sane-test

    I'm trying to setup a network service for running saned (running the sane-test backend) on Ubuntu 12.10, running it on a virtualbox. I followed the directions found here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ScanningHowTo and i got to the point where if i use a front-end like xsane, or use the command scanimage -d test i get the desired behaviour. (i get the test image). But when i try to use the network demon to access the backend (from the localhost) i get Failed to connect. I used telnet on 127.0.0.1 6566 and i got the following error: saned: symbol lookup error: saned: undefined symbol: sanei_w_init I'm a linux newbie, so i could be making some stupid mistake. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks [update]After posting this question i logged out, logged back in and it worked. After a few days i tried again and it gave the same error as before. Any help?

    I have a bug in a Linux kernel module that causes the stock Ubuntu 14.04 kernel to oops (crash). That is why I want to edit/patch the source of only that single kernel module to add some extra debug output. The kernel module in question is mvsas and not necessary to boot. For that reason I don't see any need to update any initrd images. I have read a lot of information (as shown below) and find the setup and build process confusion.   • Upgrading SSIS Custom Components for SQL Server 2012

    Having finally got around to upgrading my custom components to SQL Server 2012, I thought I’d share some notes on the process. One of the goals was minimal duplication, so the same code files are used to build the 2008 and 2012 components, I just have a separate project file. The high level steps are listed below, followed by some more details. Create a 2012 copy of the project file Upgrade project, just open the new project file is VS2010 Change target framework to .NET 4.0 Set conditional compilation symbol for DENALI Change any conditional code, including assembly version and UI type name Edit project file to change referenced assemblies for 2012 Change target framework to .NET 4.0 Open the project properties. On the Applications page, change the Target framework to .NET Framework 4. Set conditional compilation symbol for DENALI Re-open the project properties. On the Build tab, first change the Configuration to All Configurations, then set a Conditional compilation symbol of DENALI. Change any conditional code, including assembly version and UI type name The value doesn’t have to be DENALI, it can actually be anything you like, that is just what I use. It is how I control sections of code that vary between versions. There were several API changes between 2005 and 2008, as well as interface name changes. If you use any Build Events during development, such as copying the component assembly to the DTS folder, or calling GACUTIL to install it into the GAC, you can also change these now. An example of my new post-build event for a pipeline component is shown below, which uses the .NET 4.0 path for GACUTIL. It also uses the 110 folder location, instead of 100 for SQL Server 2008, but that was covered the the previous find and replace.   • Ubuntu 12.04 GTK Problem

    I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and compiled and installed GTK 3.4 to go through some GTK developer tutorials. Installing this version of GTK has caused problems with Unity. All system dialogs and top bar now have a different (older) look, and when I try to launch Nautilus I get the following message: Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" Initializing nautilus-open-terminal extension Initializing nautilus-dropbox 1.4.0 Initializing nautilus-gdu extension nautilus: symbol lookup error: nautilus: undefined symbol: ubuntu_menu_proxy_get I have run make uninstall on the newer version of GTK and reinstalled just about every package I can think of, but I am still having the same problem. How can I repair the default Ubuntu GTK libraries? EDIT Also, I noticed that my desktop icons are gone (launcher works), and I can't interact with the desktop. I can't drag any shortcuts to it, etc.

  • Resetting network adapter?

    I'm running Ubuntu 12.04. I get a strong wireless signal throughout my house, and the wireless symbol in the upper-right-hand corner shows that it's connected. The problem is, occasionally I am unable to access the internet (still having a strong symbol). This happened with Windows 7, too, but running the network troubleshooter fixed it each time. It claimed to be "resetting the network adapter". So, what I need to know is: How do I replicate that process on Ubuntu? Thanks for your help!

  • Automatically select headphones when plugged in

    When I plug headphones into my desktop computer, they are not automatically selected for output, instead all sound still goes through my S/PDIF output to the stereo. The headphones alternative is added in the sound settings, and I have to manually select it as output device. $ cat /proc/asound/pcm 00-00: ALC898 Analog : ALC898 Analog : playback 1 : capture 1 00-01: ALC898 Digital : ALC898 Digital : playback 1 00-02: ALC898 Analog : ALC898 Analog : capture 2 I have done a Google search, as well as search askubuntu.com, but none of the answers in the hits I found seems to help. Also, after listening with the headphones and then unplug them, the previous output is not automatically selected, so I have no sound at all then. I have to manually select the correct output in the settings.

  • Cannot escape character '@' in fstab file

    I want to attach remote FTP directory as a local directory in my system. I will use curlftpfs line in the fstab file , but to login I have to pass my user name and password. The user name has a special character (@) and it needs to be escaped via octal ascii code. The octal ascii for '@' is 100. But when I try to enter the following into the FSTAB file, curlftpfs#myself\100myself.com:ftpPassword@ftp://ftp.mysite.com /mnt/somedir I get an error saying Error connecting to ftp: Couldn't resolve host 'myself.com:ftpPassword@ftp://ftp.mysite.com' The fstab does not recognize escaped symbol @ (\100) and thinks that the FTP site should start immediately after the @ symbol (just like I haven't escaped it). Can someone help? Why I cannot escape @, when it can be done for space character, for example?

  • Using jQuery to Make a Field Read Only in SharePoint

    Okay… this will be my shortest blog post EVER. Very little rambling.. I promise, and I’m sure this has been blogged more than once, so I apologize for adding to the noise, but like I always say, I blog for myself so I have a global bookmark. So,let’s say you have a field on a SharePoint Form and you want to make it read only. You COULD just open it up in SPD and easily make it read only, but some people are purists and don’t like use SPD or modify the default new/edit/disp forms. Put me in the latter camp, I try to avoid modifying these forms and it seemed like such a simple task that I didn’t want to create a new un-ghosted form.  So.. how do you do it? It’s only one line of jQuery. All you need to do is find the id for your input field and capture the keypress on it so that it cannot be modified (you should probably capture clicks for dropdowns/checkboxes/etc. but I didn’t need to).  Anyway, here’s the entire script: <script src="jquery.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> jQuery(document).ready(function($){ //capture keypress on our read only field and return false $('#idOfInputField').keypress(function() { return false; }); }) </script>   You can find the ID of your input field by viewing the source, this ID stays consistent as long as you don’t muck with the list or form in the wrong way.  Please note, you CANNOT disable the input field as an alternative to capturing the keypress. If you do this and save the form, any data in the disabled fields will be wiped out. There are probably a dozen ways to make a field read-only and if all you are using jQuery for is to make a field read-only, then you might want to question your use of adding the overhead (although it’s really not that much). Hey.. it’s another tool for your tool belt.

In the interest of supplying thorough documentation to co-developers, I've been toying around in dia modeling the interface for modifying and generating a product resource: This particular system begins to act differently with user authentication/resource counts, so before I make modifications, I'm looking for some clarification: Complexity: how would you simplify the overall structure to make this easier to read? Display Symbol: is this appropriate for representing a page? Manual Operation Symbol: is this appropriate for representing a user action like a button click?   • Automatically switch to workspace with active application

    Hi, I currently have 4 workspaces. If I have a pidgin chat window open on one workspace that is currently not active and I get a message in that already open chat window, I want do be able to click on the green envelope symbol in the upper menu-bar and be switched to the workspace the window is situated. Currently if I click on the green envelope symbol there will be appear a button on the lower menu-bar on which I have to click to be switched to the other workspace. Same with opening links. If in some application I click on a link the last activated Firefox window will open the link. Even this last active firebox window is on a currently not active workspace, and there is a Firefox window on the currently active workspace. So either open the link in the Firefox on the currently active workspace, or switch to the workspace on which the link was opened. Is/are there any solution(s) to this problem?

  • Using glReadBuffer returns black image instead of the actual image only on Intel cards

    I have this piece of code glReadBuffer( GL_FRONT ); glReadPixels( 0, 0, width, height, GL_RGB, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, buffer ); Which works just perfectly in all the Nvidia and AMD GPUs I have tried, but it fails in almost every single Intel built-in video that I have tried. It actually works in a very old 945GME, but fails in all the others. Instead of getting a screenshot I am actually getting a black screen. If it helps, I am working with the Doom3 Engine, and that code is derived from the built-in screen capture code. By the way, even with the original game I cannot do screen capture on those intel devices anyway. My guess is that they are not implementing the standard correctly or something. Is there a workaround for this?

  • Is there a way to make the speaker silent while the headphone-jack keeps working? 12.04LTS

    The PC I am working on is in a loud environment. If I need sound, I use the headphone. On my own account this is easy: I mute the speaker in the sound-setting. I am not the only user, others use the Guest-session. And that's what this question about: Is it possible to turn off the speaker by default on a guest-session AND leave the headphone-output working? If yes, how can I fix it? I tried to loosen the speaker (hardware) connection but it is soldered to the mainboard. The information content of the known universe? I guess this is forward thinking -- maybe astrophyics or nanotech, or even DNA analysis really will require these orders of magnitude. How far off do you think all this is? Are these really meaningful units?

  • Application trying to use the wrong shared library

    I'm having a problem with a program (quartus) running on my ubuntu machine. I'm getting the following error. quartus: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXi.so: undefined symbol: XESetWireToEventCookie I have the correct libXi.so.6.0.0 file but no matter where I put it, the OS won't use it unless I apt-get remove libxi-dev, but a lot of software uses this libXi. What I want to do is add some sort of exception to the dynamic linker so that quartus uses the libXi.so that it needs and everything else still uses the one in /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu. Thanks!
