  • Tracking down random BSOD on windows 7

    I have gotten a computer running windows 7 handed to me that randomly, several times a day, bsods with a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50) or WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124). Crashes happens regardless of load. I am running out of ideas for how to track this down. Analyzing the minidumps shows the crash to be in ntkrnlmp.exe/WMIADAP.exe System has plenty of power (600w) Ram checks out fine using memtest86+ over a weekend. System is clean inside. No dust build up. Temperatures stay low. As far as I know (and reliability history shows) no new drivers were installed for several months before the problems started. All drivers are now up to date. sfc /scannow reports the system as clean. CHKDSK reports the disks as clean Removing the AV (Avast) has no effect. Any more things that should be tried on windows 7 before I start replacing the hardware?

  • google analytics - real-time user stats vs audience overview user stats

    When looking at the real-time analytics reporting for our app, it shows around 150-180 users, say around 10AM (our peak usage time). When I look at the Audience Overview report for the same day (hourly breakdown), the number of users shown for the 10AM hour is over 1000. I'm sure this has to do with some sort of aggregation, but I would like to know more about how these two numbers are calculated in order to understand it.

  • Tracking down Data Execution

    I have some malware infecting one of our machines at home. It first showed up as winulty.exe. After investigating, I am of the opinion that winulty.exe itself is an uninfected file but is being modified after it has loaded into memory. Turning on Data Execution Prevention for all processes and services has confirmed this to be true. How do I track down the process responsible for this? I've used File Monitor from sysinternals.com to monitor winulty.exe and see this being accessed by the svchost.exe instance hosting most of the system services and also by dfrgntfs.exe. How do I know which service or which DLL has been infected?

  • keeping connection open all time in sql

    I have developed a Windows application in c# in which multiple users can add some numbers and their name and can view the data entered. The problem that I have is that the sever is on my laptop and every time I log off or close my laptop, they are losing connection to the DB and can not add or view any more. It seems that the port is closed or something. Is there a way to keep the port and their connection established all the time even when I'm logging out?

  • Ubuntu 13.04 freezes after boot or suspend (every other time)

    I'm running 13.04 on Asus UL30A Process: Genuine Intel® CPU U7300 @ 1.30GHz × 2 Graphics: Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset OS type: 64-bit Everything completely freezes after every other a boot or suspend. No keyboard or mouse. It happens every other time. It freezes, I reboot and it works work. Next time I will reboot, it will freeze again. This never happened with 12.10. Any advice on how to fix this?

  • Tracking costs within one AWS account

    I have what I'm sure is a very common problem. Our company has many projects and groups working for different clients. We do a lot of our development work in the cloud and deploy our solutions there. We have a VPC set up that isolates projects from each other in their own subnet and that VPC is getting a hardware VPN connection back to HQ. We need to keep track of the cost run up by every project. The way I currently implement this is by providing my own tools for starting and stopping instances which log which user (and thus which project) to bill the instance too. This works okay for BoxUsage costs but not for other costs. I could create a separate account for each project and use consolidated billing, this I think would allow me to pay once but track costs per "project", but I would then not be able to share common resources (like bring account B's running instances inside the same VPC). Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers C

    I was wondering if anyone knows what is the operating system used in commercial airplanes (say Boeing or Airbus). Also, what is the (preferred) real-time programing language? I heard that Ada is used in Boeing, so my question is - why Ada? what are the criteria the Boeing-guys had to choose this language? (I guess Java wouldn't be a great choice if the exactly in lift off the garbage collector wakes up).

My idea is to have a branch for each server. /etc is not the only one directory to be tracked (I won't git init in '/etc' ) As far as I could see, it is possible to init a git for a distant directory. I tried this: # mkdir -p /git/.git # cd /git # git --work-tree=/ --git-dir=/git/.git init Initialized empty Git repository in /git/.git/ 1) Creating a new branch before everything is not possible # git branch server1 fatal: Not a valid object name: 'HEAD'. 2) adding a file in master/HEAD is not possible # touch README.md # git add README.md fatal: Unable to create '//.git/index.lock': No such file or directory how should I properly setup git to track my system-config ?   • Tools for tracking disk usage

    I manage a number of linux fileservers. These all run applications written from 0-10 years ago. As sometimes happens, a machine will come close to, or run out of disk space. Reasons include applications not rotating log files, a machine with 500GB of disk producing 150GB of new files every month that were not written to tape, databases gradually increasing in size, people doing silly things...generally a bit of chaos. Anyway, when a machine unexpectedly goes from 50% to 100% full in a couple of hours, I figure out what broke (lots of "du") and delete files or contact someone. I also can look at cacti graphs to figure out what the machine's normal disk usage is (e.g. for /home). Does anyone know of any tools that will give finer grained information on historial usage than a cacti/RRD graph? Like "/home/abc/xyz increased 50GB in the last day".

    Using MS tools to get information on PCs using our software, our customers have sent several Lenovo systems which have names we simply cannot find using Google... no search results at all. Considering these names/ids are returned by querying the system directly, not asking the customer to write it down by looking at the box, this seems odd. The ones we have so far (more than one of each) are: Lenovo 2241BL9 Lenovo 6463Y4H My guess is these are Thinkpads after Lenovo took over the brand, but can anyone help me out with this detective work? edit: the 2nd one does turn up some driver downloads and this page, but it's unclear what any of that means. When I click history it takes about 2 minutes for it to load and is frustrating.     I've found one or two guides to doing a word search and replace across multiple documents with powershell. They work well on simple documents. However, the script ignores text in headers and footers; and if "track changes" is enabled, it replaces text which has already been replaced, resulting in multiple copies of the new text if I run the script more than once on the same file. Any clues as to how I can avoid these undesirable behaviors and make this script robust?
