  Folks, I need to maintain a C#/.Net desktop application. So, I need to set myself up with Windows(7?) and Visual Studio. My current development machine is a Macbook Pro and I would like to continue using it. Overall, I am considering the following recipe: Install VMWare Fusion or Parallels or VirtualBox for running the Windows OS Buy a version of Windows to develop on Buy Windows Developer tools Having been in the open source universe all this time, I am utterly unfamiliar with the options/packages in the Windows world. I could use some help on the following: Does the recipe above look fine, or do I need to change something? What is a good VM environment to buy/use? VirtualBox is free, but Parallels/VMWare promise Windows app that blend in with my Mac windows. Could use some help on this topic Does MSFT sell a package deal which has bare bones Windows 7 and the necessary dev tools, or do I need to buy the OS and dev tools separately? Since I only need Windows to churn this C# desktop application, What is the OS version and flavor or Visual Studio I should get? Thanks in advance for any pointers. -Raj

• Getting xdebug to talk to netbeans (from a virtual box)

  Trying to get xdebug to talk to netbeans (and vice versa). xdebug is in a virtualbox setup with vagrant (and some basic puppet to setup a basic LAMP). According to the php.ini from the VM everything is setup as I indented. xdebug.default_enable=1 xdebug.remote_enable=1 xdebug.remote_handler=dbgp xdebug.remote_host=33.33.33.1 xdebug.remote_port=9000 xdebug.remote_autostart=0 Unfortunately netbeans debugger just doesn't seem to be able to talk with xdebug. Ideas?

• Why can I not get a WDS-originated PXE boot to progress past the first file download?

  I'm trying to work out an automated Windows install process, and thought I'd give WDS a look. After some promising initial progress, I seem to have hit a wall. I imported the boot and install WIMs, and created the capture WIM successfully. However, whenever I try to PXE boot the reference machine against the WDS server, it kinda craps out. It finds the server and downloads WDSNBP.COM successfully, and then gives the message "TFTP download failed." According to WireShark, the only communication between the WDS box and the client box is the successful TFTP request and download of boot\x86\WDSNBP.COM. No further requests are sent. The WDS log on the server shows the same thing, one successful download and no more activity. I've tried every combination of the following, with exactly zero change in behaviour: Win Server 2008R2 vs 2012 vs 2012R2 WDS virtualized on KVM, ESXi, VirtualBox, VMWare Workstation Client virtualized on KVM, ESXi, VirtualBox, VMWare Workstation Every network adaptor type offered by the virtualization platforms. "Actual" network vs isolated, virtual network. MS DHCP server vs Linux isc-dhcp-server Joined to a domain vs Stand-alone I tried changing the boot filename in DHCP to pxeboot.com instead, and it has no problem downloading that file instead, but it then crabs about Boot\BCD being corrupted. Also, with 2012, it doesnt appear that WDSNBP.com does the architecture detection, or at least does'nt report that it did. 2008 reports that it found x64, and then errors. I find myself out of things to check, and I dont see anything immediately wrong. Where do I go from here? WDS server is at 192.168.1.50, DHCP/DNS at 192.168.1.7.   I'm having problems getting Sentry (https://www.getsentry.com - not enough rep for a link) running as a service using supervisor. I can run Sentry in the command line and view it correctly in the browser but when it comes to supervisor I am completely in the dark. I shall try and give all the details I can Initial user warning By no means a server admin, just playing/learning in VirtualBox. Literally only just discovered supervisor from reading the Sentry documentation so I may well be making some obvious mistakes here. • Does VPN connection on virtual machine bypass host VPN?

  I wanted to see if i could channel my traffic trough two vpns, so as an experiment i set up a windows xp virtual machine in virtualbox (using NAT shared network setting), connected the host pc(windows 7) to a vpn, and then the virtual machine to another vpn. this seams to work fine. However, my question is, is the traffic sent trough both vpn servers, or is the virtual machines vpn bypassing the host machines vpn connection? thanks.

• Virtual Box state not saving upon restart/reset/shutdown - reverting to an earlier state

  Every time I restart/shut down my VM in VirtualBox (image is Ubuntu 10.02), whenever I start it back up, it reverts to the state it was in after I installed Guest Additions. This is extremely frustrating as every time I make progress on a project, whenever it restarts (mostly from crashing), I have to redo mostly everything. Is this a known problem with Guest Additions or with Virtual Box in general, and if so is there some solution?

• Changed login for a user with encrypted home, now I can't login

  I changed a user's login by doing this: $ usermod old_login -l new_login I also wanted to move his home to reflect his new username, but it wouldn't let me, so I just rebooted. But now after I login, the screen blinks and I'm redirected back to the login screen. And that's what happens when you cannot access your home, that's why I think it has something to do with his home being encrypted. How do I fix this? I'm on a Ubuntu 12 Virtualbox VM.

When I rebooted, it started doing a checkdisk and processed a bunch of files (from hard poweroffs before mabey). It runs pretty well, but lacks some useful features like native copypasting from the host. I know about the remote mode of Vim, but afaik it can only operate on the same machine. Question is, is it possible to make gVim on the windows host proxy all the commands (and the editing) to a Vim instance running on the Linux guest?
