  • Safemode Startup Issues on Vista 64 Bit

    Before i ask the question, let me point out that this is not a hardware issue. I have a clean install of vista on another hd that runs on same hardware, i am pretty sure its a corruption of a drive or a file, i presume it might be video driver. When windows wont start via normal boot i just get black screen after initial load up of os, so i boot into savemode, I end up having black screen with a mouse pointer visible, after initial load of os. The shut down button is responsive. Of course, I can install clean copy of os, and prior to that can retrieve all other files that i need by accessing hd itself, i can restore my pc from my external back up as well. Although i have all these options, i was wondering if there anything else i can do that can help me fix this issue. In save mode, it looks like I am capable of logging in after initial load of os, even though i cant see the process it self, i do see the mouse pointer. By visual memory i navigated to password field, and entered my password, hit enter, I get the loading mouse pointer, nothing really changes, same black screen and mouse pointer, but when i tried to access task manager for a second i got a safemode watermark at all four corners. Any help would be appriciated. Thank you in advance.

  • Environment Variable to determine the OS type (Windows XP, Windows 7)

    I want to differrntiate between Windows XP and Windows 7 in a XML file. Thought i will use an environment variable for it inside the XML. However I could not find any system environment variable defined in windows that gives this information. I see the %OSTYPE% variable but it is only available in Windows 7. It is not defined in XP. Is there anyway i could do this? Note that i would like a solution which purely depends on system environment variables. I do not want to create new variables based on executing some command, because i want to use this variable in a XML file.

  • Vista: window focus problem

    Sorry for the vague title but this one is hard to explain so bear with me please. I'm using Windows Vista at work for web development and sometimes when I Click or Alt-Tab to background window, the window will get focus but it will not be brought to the front. In order to bring the window to the front, I have to click on the applications border (when the resize cursor appears) and the window will then jump to the front. I've had this problem for about a year now and it happens at least a dozen times a day, but it doesn't do this all the time - seems random. I hope I have explained the issue fully (and you've understood it) and would appreciate any constructive answers or comments to solve this problem. Example: If I Alt-Tab from Google Chrome to Notepad and this problem randomly occurs, Google Chrome will remain in front of Notepad, however, I will be able to type text into Notepad while the window is behind Google Chrome. Clicking on Notepad's content area will not bring it to the front but clicking it's window border will. Video Exampe http://vimeo.com/19388998 In this video, I clicked from Google Chome to UltraEdit and chrome stayed in font, but as you can see, I can still type in UltraEdit. I'm starting to believe that this could be a bug in Google Chrome so I'll continue to watch if this between other applications.

  • Ubuntu won't appear on laptop startup

    I've recently installed Ubuntu along with Windows Vista. So normally when the laptop is starting up it shows two options whether I want to log on Windows or Ubuntu. One day I shut down the laptop and I open it the next and it just logs onto Windows automatically without giving me the option to choose. I go to check if Ubuntu was un-installed or something, but it was still there and everything, but I can't open it. I don't know if there's any additional info I should add because I'm not very good with computers, and I don't want to re-install it because I have my stuff on it so I'd lose it, and I'm having trouble backing it up. Any suggestions?

    Under Vista, when in Basic theme, after calling IUIFramework::Destroy() the Vista theme is lost, and enlarging the window does not display outside of the initial area. You can repro it easily with the SimpleRibbon SDK sample. In simpleribbon.cpp, insert in the WndProc switch block: case WM_KEYUP: DestroyFramework(); InvalidateRect(hWnd, NULL, TRUE); break; Compile, run, hit a key and try to enlarge in Vista Basic Theme (no problem in Win7 or Vista aero or Windows classic).   • hg clone has stopped working on my Vista box

    I have a Windows Vista machine that has been connecting to http://hg.netbeans.org productively for awhile... until recently. Lately, when I attempt to pull or clone, the update appears to stall... I see the following messages on the screen when I attempt to clone: destination directory: web-main requesting all changes adding changesets And then... nothing happens. I have opened the Task Manager and there doesn't appear to be any significant network activity for HOURS. I can contact the server with FireFox and see the proper output. I can clone from the repo with Solaris and/or Mac OS X... so the issue doesn't appear to be at the 'other end'. I had been running a fairly old version of Mercurial before this started happening. After it started happening, I upgraded to Mercurial 1.5.2.. which did not help resolve the issue at all. What are the likely causes and work-arounds for this?

  • Failed Vista/Ubuntu 12.04 attempt at dual boot. Can only boot Ubuntu now

    I recently tried installing Ubuntu 12.04 alongside my Windows Vista install. I can boot fine into Ubuntu every time, but now every time I choose to boot into Windows, the process fails completely and restarts (or shuts down) my laptop. Is there anything I can do to recover this. I am very happy with Ubuntu and I do not want to recover my old Vista installation to overwrite it, but I do need to be able to use both OS's. Is it recoverable or should I start from scratch?

  • Vista home basic, "this folder is empty" problem

    When I access my itunes folder in "my music" I see most but not all artist folders, when I access any of them I get "this folder is empty", When in Itunes all music plays and if I right click on a song and click show in folder I can see my full Itunes folder, so far I have done two system restores, scan disk, windows memory scan, defrag and tried ifixit. nothing has worked, I dont understand how I can see two different folders at the same address. Also have checked hidden files settings.

  • Workaround with paths in vista

    Not really a programming question but i think quite relative. I have a .exe running in my windows XP PC. This exe needs a file in the same directory to run and has no problem finding it in XP BUT in Vista(I tried this in several machines and works in some of them) fails to run. I'm guessing there is a problem finding the path.The program is written in basic(Yes i know..) I attach the code below. Can you think of any workarounds?   • How to calibrate your mouse's X/Y in Windows Vista

    I've just installed a new Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 and it's X/Y calibration/alignment seems to be off. If I move the mouse from left to right, the cursor will go up and down slightly. If I move the mouse from top to bottom, the cursor will also move from left to right slightly too. I seem to remember in earlier version of Windows or Intelli Point, there was a calibration tool which would fix this issue. Can anyone help? Many Thanks Stephen

    i had a failed SP1 install... now im stuck with the system trying (and failing) to finilize instalation @boot, the system after log-in thinks its SP1 SP1 uninstaller says it cant uninstall SP1 installer says allready installed SP2 installer says install SP1 is there a way to remove SP1 information, fool the system to think it doesnt have service pack and install it again ? i REALLY dont want to reinstall windows. that would suck so badly that id rather stick with this pre-SP1 relic...

  • Apache, Tomcat 5 and problem with HTTP basic auth

    I have setup a Tomcat with a webapp that uses http basic auth in some of its URLs. There is a Apache server in front of the Tomcat. I have setup Apache as a proxy like this (all traffic should go directly to tomcat): /etc/httpd/conf.d/proxy_ajp.conf: LoadModule proxy_ajp_module modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so ProxyPass / ajp://localhost:8009/ ProxyPassReverse / ajp://localhost:8009/ There is a webapp installed to root of Tomcat (ROOT.war), so I should be able to use http://localhost/ to access my webapp. But it is not working with http basic auth. The problem is that everything works until I try to access URL that are protected by the HTTP basic auth. URLs without authentication work just fine. When accessing this url via apache I am getting an error message from Apache. If I access the same URL directly from tomcat, everything works just fine. I am getting this to Apache error log: [Wed Sep 01 21:34:01 2010] [error] proxy: dialog to [::1]:8009 (localhost) failed access log looks like this: ::1 - - [01/Sep/2010:21:34:01 +0300] "GET /protected_path/ HTTP/1.0" 503 360 "-" "w3m/0.5.2" I am using: Fedora release 13 (Goddard) httpd-2.2.16-1.fc13.x86_64 tomcat5-5.5.27-7.4.fc12.noarch The basic auth is implemented in the webapp (not in Apache or Tomcat). The webapp is actually implemented in Scala/Lift, but that shouldn't matter. The auth works if I access the tomcat directly. Error message that I am getting from Apache. It is curious that the title is Unauthorized and not Internal error: Unauthorized The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later. Apache/2.2.16 (Fedora) Server at my.server.name.com Port 80 It could be that Apache is seeing a some thing else than 200 OK response and thinks that it is an error when it actually should pass the received 401 Unauthorized response directly to browser. If this is the problem, how to fix it?

    I had some malware in my computer so I did a bit of manual work to remove it including resetting TCP/IP. Now the malware is gone. I can see my home wireless network and I can get connected to it but when connected I get the Internet wireless connected with limited access message. When I go to the IE I cannot browse. When I tried to ping 192.168.1.1 I got an Error Code 1231 Unconnected Network Problem. I have deactivated my Windows firewall as I thought it could be hyperactive security. Still no luck. I have Norton but it is not active, I have also Avast and AVG installed but they are not active. Any ideas?

    I have two computers in my house they are laptop and desktop and I use internet which is of wired connection and it has a modem. The modem has 1 LAN port and 1 USB port. So what I did is that I connected the desktop to the LAN which had Windows 7 Home Premium OS and Laptop to the USB which had Windows 7 Home Basic. As home group can be made with windows 7 home premium and above versions I made it via desktop. The home group was established and the data can be exchanged.But one problem I was able to access internet in desktop but not in laptop. So I tried to share internet but I am not able to do so..... So anyone there to help me ???????

    I am trying to establish a VPN connection to a server in my office from my laptop at home. I tried some of the steps as mentioned here: Connect to a network Connect to a workplace Use my Internet Connection (VPN) Then type server IP address and then my username & password. After creating a VPN connection, I can see I am connected to it. Now I want to browse files on the server. But I have no clue where I should look for them. I was thinking more of a simple step, like, Windows Run > Type ip address > \\124.345.678.900, then a prompt asking username and password, and finally a window opens to view the files. I tried to google it, but still unable to view files. Please help. Update: I didn't mention that when I try to connect to server via \\124.345.678.900 I get 0x80070043 error message.

  • Weather Logging Software on Windows Home Server

    I'm looking for some weather logging software that I can run as a Windows Home Server add-in, or as a service on my Home Server, so I don't need to log into my Home Server to log weather data. I have an Oregon Scientific WMR918 weather station, and an HP MediaSmart EX485 Windows Home Server. The two are currently connected through a serial bluetooth adapter, but that shouldn't matter as the computer sees it basically as a serial device. I'm currently using Cumulus to log data and upload to Weather Underground, but it is a regular windows application, so I need to remain logged into my Home Server by RDP in order to run the software (I disconnect, but don't log off so the session remains open). Ideally I would like something to run as a service or WHS add-in, so that it runs all the time without logging in, can log data from my WMR918, and can upload to Weather Underground. Thanks!

  • Installer can't create shortcuts - Vista Home Premium

    Suddenly, whenever I try to install something new on my system, all goes well until it gets to the point of creating Start Menu icons. At this point, I get an alert saying that the installer doesn't have permission to access the Start Menu folder, and my only options are Ignore, which just keeps triggering the same alert, and Cancel, which totally undoes the installation. I've tried disabling UAC (which is a feature I detest anyway), and running the installer as administrator from a R-click. Neither works. I also have 8 subfolders under my c:\users folder with various names, som of which I can look into and some which I cant. I have no idea where all this stuff came from, since I have a personal PC for home use and nobody uses it but me. Any suggestions, anyone? Thanx, T.E.Ponta

  • Vista WHS Client stopped resolving local names

    I’m running Windows Home Server PP2 in my home, with 3 client computers: two XP and one Vista. I have a router that provides my local DHCP and the server has a static IP address. The other day the Vista machine hung, and on reboot stopped resolving local names. It will show the green home server client icon in the system tray, but if I attempt to log in to the console, I get a “This computer cannot connect to your home server” message. If I ping the server name from the command line, it does not resolve, and gives a “could not find host” message. Oddly enough, if I browse the network, I can see the server, but double clicking on it fails. The other machines on the local network have no problems seeing the server, and the Vista machine has no problems resolving names from the internet, it just can’t see any local machines. I’m aware that I can work around this by adding entries to my HOSTS file (it does work), but I’d like this to work the way it’s “supposed” to. I’m an experienced computer user and developer, but not a networking whiz. Can anyone tell me how local name resolution is supposed to work in my environment and/or suggest ways to troubleshoot this?     This question has come up several times recently as we take several hundred UK developers through 6 Weeks of Windows Azure training (sorry – we are full). Short answer: In the main, yes Longer answer: The question is sparked by the requirements as stated on the Windows Azure SDK download page. Namely: Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7; Windows Vista; Windows Vista 64-bit Editions Service Pack 1; Windows Vista Business; Windows Vista Business 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Enterprise; Windows Vista Enterprise 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Home Premium; Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Service Pack 1; Windows Vista Service Pack 2; Windows Vista Ultimate; Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition Notice there is no mention of Windows XP. However things are not quite that simple. The Windows Azure Platform consists of three released technologies Windows Azure SQL Azure Windows Azure platform AppFabric The Windows Azure SDK is only for one of the three technologies, Windows Azure. What about SQL Azure and AppFabric? Well it turns out that you can develop for both of these technologies just fine with Windows XP: SQL Azure development is really just SQL Server development with a few gotchas – and for local development you can simply use SQL Server 2008 R2 Express (other versions will also work). AppFabric also has no local simulation environment and the SDK will install fine on Windows XP (SDK download) Actually it is also possible to do Windows Azure development on Windows XP if you are willing to always work directly against the real Azure cloud running in Microsoft datacentres. However in practice this would be painful and time consuming, hence why the Windows Azure SDK installs a local simulation environment. Therefore if you want to develop for Windows Azure I would recommend you either upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 or… you use a virtual machine running Windows 7. If this is a temporary requirement, then you could consider building a virtual machine using the Windows 7 Enterprise 90 day eval. Or you could download a pre-configured VHD – but I can’t quite find the link for a Windows 7 VHD. Pointers welcomed. Thanks.
