  • Why does terminal prompt text becomes black when connecting to Ubuntu with Nomachine NX client?

    I'm using Nomachine NX client for Windows to remotely connect to my Ubuntu. Every now and then I experience a strange phenomena: the text in the prompt of all open terminal windows becomes black, so it can't be viewed over the black background. Typed commands are also black, but the results are in normal colors. So I can run stuff, but can't see what I'm typing... After I close all open terminal windows and start a new terminal window, everything goes back to normal. This is rerally annoying and happens quite often. Any idea why?

    For our network we are working on building a new firewall box and we just installed Smoothwall on it to test it out. When I start up the box, before the login prompt even appears, all of the live IP traffic is appearing in the terminal (source/destination IPs, MACs, Ports, etc). I wait for the boot sequence to finish, but all I see is this IP traffic. The login prompt never comes up. I finally get sick of waiting and press CTRL + C and it says "Entering Run Level 3" and then I get a login prompt finally. Once I login, the IP traffic continues to fly through the terminal even as I'm trying to type commands. How do I turn this stuff off? Is this the default setting for Smoothwall to have all this IP traffic going by on the screen? It essentially renders using the terminal to being useless.

    I want to run fsck on a disk image before I use it to restore (replace) a corrupted volume. Using Terminal, what would be the proper command, syntax, and options for this operation? I've just recently become acquainted with Terminal and line commands, so syntax and specific options aren't part of my computing vocabulary. I'm using Terminal 2.1.2, bash, OS 10.6.8. Ultimately, I'm trying to restore an image to a secondary startup volume (external drive). The image is mounted on my desktop and I want to check it for errors before I use it. Disk Utility runs "repair disk" successfully but the integrity of the image is suspect.

On the other side, when someone installs an application from the Ubuntu Software Center, is the repository then added automatically? I am asking those questions to figure out this: When I run update and then upgrade, will this application be upgraded or not? Is the result same in two options?

    I am often running low on space on the system and home partition. I would like to see a list of installed programs and the space they take, in order to be able to make decisions on this matter. I do not mean a list with all components, 'secondary' programs and dependencies like in Synaptic, which I know can be also displayed in the Terminal -- so please do not set as duplicate of this question --, but just a list with the main programs (those that appear in the main menu) and with the space they occupy on the disk. (I use Xubuntu 12.10)

    I use Ubuntu 9.10 and I would like to be able to see my bash history for more than one terminal sessions. I.e. my last 200 commands or so, even if I have been logged out in between. When I use the history I just see all commands from my actual terminal session. How can I see more command history from Bash? Is there any specific settings for bash that I should change from the default values in Ubuntu?

  • If my Remote Desktop Connection Broker server goes down, can users still access my two Terminal Servers?

    I would like to setup the Remote Desktop Connection Broker to allow better load balancing of the two terminal servers we have as well as allowing the user to re-establish to the correct server if they get disconnected. My worry is, if I set this up and the server this service is running goes down, does the terminal server stop accepting connections or will they just lose the benefit of having RDCB turned on? I don't want to add another point of failure in this equation unless I have to.

    This is one of those things that looks like it might have a simple solution but is rather time consuming once you start investigating PyTile, Xnee and the likes. I know, I should just use a tiling window manager etc., but I suppose it can be done in OpenBox, and I am just hoping somebody already has a working solution. Ok, so I want to press a key combination while I am in an OpenBox session (Lubuntu LXDE to be more precise) and have my terminal appear below my then resized Chromium window (say ~60% Chromium and ~40% Terminal).

  • Will terminal keep executing a command after i disconnect my VNC session?

    I established a remote session in a MacOSX (10.6.8) from my PC (Windows7) using VNC. I initiated terminal and it is currently executing a task that will take probably 1 day before completing. Should I expect that even if I disconnect the VNC session, Terminal will keep running after I disconnect? I assume so since I used VNC just to remotely start the process but want to double check. Can anybody tell me if I am wrong?

When I have VNC/rdesktop client (and there it is VMWare/Virtualbox with other Linux) I want to switch virtual terminal remotely, but just pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 switches things locally. VirtualBox/VMWare often provides special means to send Ctrl+Alt+Del, but not Ctrl+Alt+F1. (I already know that I can log in over ssh and chvt)

I googled that topic and found a lot of good answers, but with all the solutions I have a little problem: I believe I can't properly give an address of shared folder. I can find it following way: "Network" - "Windows Network" - "WORKGROUP_name" - "Computer_name" - and there is some folder i would like to mount. How can I write the path to the folders in terminal?     Is the following I will explain possible with a key combination? Here is the image: As you can see, the terminal is the focus window (Front window) and Nautilus is in the background (Back Window). How can I grab a folder or file from Nautilus without loosing focus on the terminal (Without making the terminal go to the background and Nautilus to the front) and drop it in the terminal?. What I want is not to have to ALT+TAB again just to do this. Options like resizing the windows to fit the screen are not what I am looking for. Like in the image, we have a fullscreen window that we want it to stay like that. We can drag the terminal window around but anytime I access the background nautilus window, I should not loose focus on the terminal (It should not go to the background every time I access Nautilus). Maybe like a key combination that freezes the current focus windows positions and I can drag from background windows to background windows or background windows to the front focused one.
