  I have a table with lets say 2 columns. id number, and value. Value is a string (var char). Lets say i have a number x, and a list of numbers a1, a2, a3, a4, a5..... where x is not in the list. All of these numbers correspond to a unique row in the table. I want to know if the string value for x in the table is contained in one of the string values for any table entry for a1, a2, a3, a4... Lets say i have these rows: x, aaa a1, bbb a2, ccc a3, ddd a4, aaabbbcc then i want somehow a confirmation that yes, the value for x is included in one of the values in my list of numbers (a4 contains x). I know i can do this in a couple queries and shove it down some PHP and get my answer. But can i do this with one query?

  Need to find gap between start and end dates more than 20 days for multiple data ranges with overlaps. One Id has multiple start dates and end dates. Following Id 1 has two gaps less that 20 day. It should be considered as one range from 10/01/2012 to 10/30/2014 without any gap. 1 10/01/2012 02/01/2013 1 01/01/2013 01/31/2013 1 02/10/2013 03/31/2013 1 04/15/2013 10/30/2014 Id 2 has a gap more than 20 days between end date 01/30/2013 and start date 05/01/2013. It has to be captured. 2 01/01/2013 01/30/2013 2 05/01/2013 06/30/2014 2 07/01/2013 02/01/2014 Id 3 should be considered as one range from 01/01/2012 to 06/01/2014 without any gap. The gap between end date 02/28/2013 and start date 07/01/2013 should be ignored because range from 01/01/2012 to 01/01/2014 cavers a gap. 3 01/01/2012 01/01/2014 3 01/01/2013 02/28/2013 3 07/01/2013 06/01/2014 The cursor can do it but it works extremely slow and not acceptable. • Easiest solution to sync an offline (local desktop application) database with a central server and multiple pc's?

  I have a desktop application which uses a local database. (This can be SQLite, SqlCe, PostgreSQL or any other database I will be able to install locally, I haven't decided which one to use yet.) The plan is to achieve the following: A user can subscribe to some kind of cloud service. If he does his local database should be synced with the online database (one for all users, or one per user, whatever the easiest solution is) so he will be able to sync his local database data between multiple PC's, can access his data online. (Much like dropbox does for files.) What is the best, easiest (and preferably cheapest) solution to achieve this? I am looking into DataObjects.net but I can't find much documentation about their Sync feature. Or, are there other alternatives? For example, I start with some kind of cloud service which allows local caching and use the local caching for users who do not subscribe to the service. Any pointers, tips or experiences are welcome.

The question, how do I render those icons - does itemset support nested trigger elements? If not, how do I go about achieving it (clicking on the item results in an action other than edit or delete, so cannot use that; can show delete/edit on the page shown when user clicks on the item, but want to save that one click if the user just wants to delete the item for example). I have a HUGE form in one of the pages, and when submitting the form (action=php_page) URL is so long it covers half a word document in one line with all the passing variables... This is very ugly... • MySQL look for missing ratings

  Hopefully I can ask this without being confusing. I am a photographer and I am having some of our clients rate pictures that we have taken. We have hundreds of pictures in our portfolio that they may be rating. What I want to do is ask our clients to rate pictures again, but only show them the pictures they haven't yet rated. I currently have three tables: one that stores the actual ratings, one that stores the pictures (or location of each picture), and one that stores the information about the rater. I'm using codeigniter for my db management, if that helps at all. What I have so far is this: "SELECT * FROM ratings LEFT JOIN portfolio ON ratings.portfolioid = portfolio.portfolioid" This will give me a row for each rating, but won't show me where a rating is missing for a picture.   I have added add(+ symbol button) button to my navigation controller. When I click it a view appears from bottom. I added a navigation bar and two buttons to it. One save and one cancel button. And the view have one textEdit box. After editing I can save or cancel. If I touch cancel I need the view to disappear like it should go down again. I think all iPhone , iPodTouch users use it. Like when they touch Add item then a view appears from bottom and when they cancel it goes down again. How can I make in this way in my application.

  I'm making a little java game in which I would have two threads (well as the FIRST step towards multithreading...), one for the logic and one for the drawing. So my question is: How can I make those two communicating which each other? Requirements: accessing variables and object from a another thread syncing them so they each complete a same number of "loops" in the same time. (the logic calculates and then the another one draws the results and the loop begins again...) So how is this achievable in java? Thanks in advance!

• I can't find a DirectX installer to run from my installer.

  I tried this one. But it's the annoying one which asks you where to extract temp files, my users won't know what this means. I also tried the web installer, but you're not strictly allowed to use this. I don't really follow the windows setup stuff, but is there a single .EXE I am allowed to distribute and run, which just works (for DX 9.0C) with some command-line args? Or some other way, which can can described in idiot-proof steps and and called in one command-line argument from an installer script like Inno?

• Why should i POST data rather then GET?

  I know you dont want to POST a form with a username and password where anyone could use the history to see or situations where repeat actions may not be desired (refreshing a page = adding an item to a cart may not be desired). So i have an understanding when i may want to use one over the other. But i could always have the server redirect the url after a get to get around the cart problem and maybe most of my forms will work perfectly fine with get. WHY should i use POST over get? I dont understand the benefits of one over the other. I do notice post doesnt add data to the history/url and will warn you about refreshing the page but those are the only two differences i know of. Why as a developer might i want to use one over the other?

• jQuery: Any way to "refresh" event handlers?

  I have two divs, one that holds some stuff and the other with all possible stuff. Clicking on one of the divs will transfer items to the other div. What I mean is, if I first click on an element, it gets added to the other div, but if I click on this element again, nothing happens. I can do this manually but is there a better way to achieve this?

• Alternative to singleton for unique resources

  I keep reading over and over again that one should avoid using singletons for various reasons. I'm wondering how to correctly handle a situation where a class represents a unique system resource. For example, a AudioOutput class using SDL. Since SDL_OpenAudio can only be open once at a time it makes no sense having more then one object of this type and it seems to me preventing accidentally making more then one object would actually be good. Just wondering what experienced programmers think about this, am i missing another option ?

• MySQL: Return grouped fields where the group is not empty, effeciently

  In one statement I'm trying to group rows of one table by joining to another table. I want to only get grouped rows where their grouped result is not empty. Ex. Items and Categories SELECT Category.id FROM Item, Category WHERE Category.id = Item.categoryId GROUP BY Category.id HAVING COUNT(Item.id) > 0 The above query gives me the results that I want but this is slow, since it has to count all the rows grouped by Category.id. What's a more effecient way? I was trying to do a Group By LIMIT to only retrieve one row per group. But my attempts failed horribly. Any idea how I can do this? Thanks

  Hi, I am developing on Android but the question might be just as valid on any other Java platform. I have developed a multi-threaded app. Lets say I have a first class that needs to do a time-intensive task, thus this work is done in another Thread. When it's done that same Thread will return the time-intensive task result to another (3rd) class. This last class will do something and return it's result to the first-starting class. I have noticed though that the first class will be waiting the whole time, maybe because this is some kind of loop ? Also I'd like the Thread-class to stop itself, as in when it has passed it's result to the third class it should simply stop. The third class has to do it's work without being "incapsulated" in the second class (the Thread one). Anyone knows how to accomplish this ? right now the experience is that the first one seems to be waiting (hanging) till the second and the third one are done :(

Is there to a way to make it not update the attributes if it will make the model invalid?

• What can cause reset connection when running PHP script?

  I've developed a web application with CodeIgniter that works perfectly on my local machines (one with windows and one with Linux). When I moved it to my hosting server, connection gets reset when running one particular PHP script that does a few MySQL queries and some operations on arrays. The data I'm querying is small, just a few tables with up to 25 records. Firefox returns "The connection was reset" after maybe 2-3 seconds. I checked the servers error logs but there was nothing there. Unfortunately I don't have access to Apache error logs. What can cause this behavior?
