• What would be a best way to code a rudimentary LIMS?

  Hi, I hope that I am asking the right question at right place. If not, please do not hesitate to point me to the right place. I am working in a laboratory, where computers/programming/programmers are all used only as support. But I believe that we need better information organization and management. Given the diverse information generated in the lab I believe that we need some sort of Laboratory Information Management System. Is there a good starting point to do this? I am myself not a trained programmer. I can code reasonably well in python and R, and if necessary I can learn MySql, php.

• I need help with some terminology

  I'm not a programmer; I'm a freelance writer and researcher. I have a client who'd looking for stats on certain "threats" to the apps market. One of them is cowboy coding. (I know what that means; that's not my question.) Specifically, he wants to see numbers regarding how many apps have failed/crashed/removed because of errors made by, in essence, sloppy coding. (I'm not here to debate the merits of cowboy coding, and whether or not it is sloppy; work with me here.) I've used every possible search term/phrase I can think of, but I can't find any hard numbers, just anecdotal evidence. Have any of you seen any reports that have this kind of data?

And also tend to keep learning about new technologies and about web services. On the other hand I like software engineering also for the desktop applications as I have had experience with development small scale softwares in VB.Net, Java, C++, etc. Which path has more scope and better future? I have tried to transpose it, but with no success. I have also tried to use gluLookAt(...) with success. At the reference page, I watched the remarks about the to-be-created matrix, and it seems the same as mine. Where I am wrong?

• Why no client-side HTML include tag?

  I had a question posed to me the other day by another programmer. I remember (a very long time ago) wondering the very same. Why was a browser-side include tag never considered? Or was it? Specifically with a tag that instructed the browser to include additional HTML from other sources. e.g. <include src="http://server/foo/bar.html">. Many folks will make javascript calls and fill innerHTML to accomplish the same, when the same outside a the javascript engine could be accomplished by the browser. It would have been painful to have nested <HTML>s <BODY>s (i.e.) but we have to consider that aspect anywhere anyway.

• How will Quantum computing affect us?

  I am interested in quantum computing, but have not studied it in depth. Things like Shor's algorithm intrigue me. My question is: If quantum computing took off in a big way (i.e. functional quantum home computers were available) how would it affect us programmers and software developers? Would we have to learn how to make use of superposition and entanglement - would it change how we write algorithms? Would more mathematical programmers be required/would we need new skills? • Does placing Google Analytics code in an external file affect statistics?

  I'm working with an outside software vendor to add Google Analytics code to their web app, so that we can track its usage. Their developer suggested that we place the code in an external ".js" file, and he could include that in the layout of his application. The StackOverflow question "Google Analytics: External .js file covers the technical aspect, so apparently tracking is possible via an external file. However, I'm not quite satisfied that this won't have negative implications. Does including the tracking code as an external file affect the statistics collected by Google?

• Do backlinks to blocked content add value?

  We've been debating the following SEO question at our office: If you block bot access to a page either via robots.txt or on-page noindex metadata, does that negate the value of any backlinks to that page? We have a client who wants to block some event booking form pages from being indexed as each booking form page has a unique URL parameter and the pages are "clogging up" the Google index; however lots of websites link to those booking form pages and we wouldn't want to lose the value of those links. • Is sticking to one language on a particular project a good practice?

  I'm developing a pipeline for processing text that will go into production. The question I keep asking myself is: should I stick to one language for the project when I'm looking for a tool to do a particular task (e.g. NLTK, PDFMiner, CLD, CRFsuite, etc.)? Or is it OK to mix and match languages on the project? So I pick the best tool regardless of what language it's written in (e.g. OpenNLP, ParsCit, poppler, CFR++, etc.) and warp (wrap) my code around it? Note, I am not asking about should a developer stick to just one language for their career.

• Task ownership with Wordpress - CSS - Designer or Developer?

  We have a dispute regarding who owns which tasks when it comes to the CSS on our live site. Our designer argues that he is not responsible to log-in to word press and modify the css or use ftp for any changes because that's not his job description while developer argues that since it is css, it belongs to designer and that he is to update the changes to the server and then compare and correct the output. I'd like experienced people working in professional development environment to put a light on this scenario. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, or is there a separate forum for business development or project management specific questions?

• Complexity of a web application

  I am currently writing my Master's Thesis on maintainability of a web application. I found some methods like the "Maintainability Index" by Coleman et.al. or the "Software Maintainability Index" by Muthanna et.al. For both of them one needs to calculate the cyclomatic complexity. So my question is: Is it possible to measure the cyclomatic complexity of a web application? In my opinion there are three parts to a web application: Server code (PHP, C#, Python, Perl, etc.) Client code (JavaScript) HTML (links and forms as operators, GET-parameters and form fields as operands!?) What do you think? Is there another point of view on the complexity of web application? Did I miss something?

• Were you a good programmer when you first left university?

  I recently graduated, from university. I have since then joined a development team where I am by far the least experienced developer, with maybe with a couple work terms under my belt, meanwhile the rest of the team is rocking 5-10 years experience. I am/was a very good student and a pretty good programmer when it came to bottled assignments and tests. I have worked on some projects with success. But now I working with a much bigger code-base, and the learning curve is much higher... I was wondering how many other developers started out their careers in teams and left like they sucked. When does this change? How can I speed up the process? My seniors are helping me but I want to be great and show my value now. I don't to start a flame war, this is just a question I have been having and I was hoping to get some advice from other experienced developers, as well as other beginners like me.

• Is it worth learning either GWT or Vaadin?

  I consider myself a decent java/web developer. In my career I have always used servlets and ejb's with a web front end, most recently incoporating jquery and ajax. I can see the theoretical benefit of using GWT or Vaadin: it is my understanding they convert Java code to the required JavaScript/HTML. So the developer gets the benefit of cross browser compatibility and compile time error checking (of web GUI elements). My question is threefold: Are there any other benefits I am missing that would be gained using Vaadin or GWT? I am actually quite confident and productive using HTML and JavaScript - so will I actually see any benefit? Or will it just make my knowledge of these areas redundant (as they are handled by GWT/Vaadin)? Will the end result be that I can create enterprise scale data driven websites in a reasonably short time? I can however already do this, and I have not wasted any time learning GWT/Vaadin.

  I have been asked to create a web service that communicates with Auth.NET CIM and Shipsurance API. This web service will be used by multiple applications (one a desktop and another a web application). Am confused whether to go for WCF or asmx web service . Auth.NET CIM and Shipsurance API have asmx webservices which i would be calling in my newly created web service.So is WCF the right way to Go or can i stay with asmx? Can Some one please guide. • Bridging: Loosing WLAN network connection with 4addr on option - Why?

  Question: For use with my Xen VM, I need to create a virtual network interface (vif) that is bridged to wlan0. If in /etc/network/interfaces I add auto xenbr0 iface xenbr0 inet dhcp And then later do brctl addif xenbr0 wlan0 I get this error message. can't add wlan0 to bridge xenbr0: Operation not supported I found out that Linux won't let you bridge a wireless interface in managed mode at all unless you enable the 4addr option (needed to recompile iw): iw dev wlan0 set 4addr on Afterwards brctl addif xenbr0 wlan0 works, and brctl show shows xenbr0 as bridged to wlan0. Unfortunately, as soon as I execute iw dev wlan0 set 4addr on my entire network connection is gone (no connection). As soon as then I execute iw dev wlan0 set 4addr off I reconnect and it works again. If I re-execute 4addr on, it breaks again, if I execute 4addr off, it works again. Unfortunately, I can't just turn 4addr on, activate the bridge and then turn it back off (error: device not ready). Does anybody know why I loose my connection ?

• is it a bad practice to call a View from another View in MVC?

  I have some plain Views, they don't have any logic behind them (there is no action or controller behind them), their only propouse is to alert the user about something like "We have sent you an email to confirm your account", "You have no access to this resource", etc... These views are really simple, and calling them through a Controller/Action seems to be too much overhead, but somehow I feel like it is not quite correct. What do you think? How do you handle this kind of situations?? I guess this question will apply to any MVC Framework, but in my case I'm using the ASP.NET MVC 3 framework.

• Blogger sub-directory

  There has long been a debate on the internet about SEO in relation to using either sub-domains or sub-directories for blogs. I am not terribly interested in that debate. I merely want to redirect my blogger blog to my domain, the easiest way possible, and in a manner least likely to impair the current functionality of my server/websites. I believe that the simplest way in which to do this is to use a subdirectory for the blog (although I am slightly concerned that the CNAME record will be shared by both) My question is this: how to use custom domain sub-directories when blogger refuse their use; complaining that the "URL must not end with a path" when a user attempts to establish such a custom domain? Google searches on this matter are oddly useless, as most results return Blogger's forum entries that always seem to direct to Blogger's Help home page o.O (using the search facilities of Blogger's Help directory itself fails to unearth these forum posts). Any pointers (no pun intended) would be greatly appreciated.

• How to remove individual webapps from Launcher

  Today my launcher looks like a long vertical bar of icons. I have 14 webapp icons on the launcher but there is no option to remove them or an option to no include them (Or even an option to merge them as I asked in a previous question). Is there an option, without having to disable the whole webapp idea, to remove individual webapps from the launcher. Forgot to add that the option to Unlock from Launcher does not appear, but only on the webapps. On the rest of the launcher icons it appears correctly.
