• What technologies are used for Game development now days?

  Whenever I ask a question about game development in an online forum I always get suggestions like learning line drawing algorithms, bit level image manipulation and video decompression etc. However looking at games like God of War 3, I find it hard to believe that these games could be developed using such low level techniques. The sheer awesomeness of such games defy any comprehensible(for me) programming methodology. Besides the gaming hardware is really a monster now days. So it stands to reason that the developers would work at a higher level of abstraction. What is the latest development methodology in the gaming industry? How is it that a team of 30-35 developers (of which most is management and marketing fluff) able to make such mind boggling games?

• Atheros 922 PCI WIFI is disabled in Unity but enabled in terminal - How to get it to work?

  I am trying to get my PCI Wireless Atheros 922 card to work. It is disabled in Unity: both the network utility and the desktop (see screenshot http://www.amisdurailhalanzy.be/Screenshot%20from%202012-10-25%2013:19:54.png) I tried many different advises on many different forums. Installed 12.10 instead of 12.04, enabled all interfaces... etc. I have read about the aht9 driver... The terminal shows no hw or sw lock for the Atheros card, nevertheless, it is still disabled. Nothing worked so far, the card is still disabled. Any help is much appreciated. • I can't get suspend, hibernate and shutdown to work in Ubuntu 12.04

  I recently built a computer with these specs: Asus Motherboard, Intel i3 3.3 GHz dual processor, 8 GB of RAM. I installed 12.04 on a brand new hard drive. I partitioned the hard drive between root, home and swap like I have often read how to do. I cannot get this machine to properly shutdown. I have to hold the power button down now. Although, for the first few days it properly shutdown. I also cannot get the system to hibernate or suspend properly. I have read tons on this and watched many YouTube tutorials on how to fix both, but the computer never wakes up after suspend or hibernate. It just stays on a black screen. Can anyone help? I love 12.04 so far, but these setbacks are making me worried about stability and power management issues. Also, I wonder if it's really bad for the hard drive to force the CPU to shutdown.

• Best way to track multiple sites with Google Analytics

  I currently have 63 websites (and counting) that I'm tracking on one Google Analytics account, and I'm starting to realize... this is becoming a bit cumbersome. What's the best way to collect traffic data in bulk? Are there other resources out there that are better suited for this task? Does Google offer a bulk option for this kind of thing? Would it be better to make separate analytics accounts? I'm just wondering if anyone else has had found a better solution that manually setting up all these accounts/setting up the tracking codes etc, when it comes to large scale management.

• How would you code an AI engine to allow communication in any programming language?

  I developed a two-player iPhone board game. Computer players (AI) can either be local (in the game code) or remote running on a server. In the 2nd case, both client and server code are coded in Lua. On the server the actual AI code is separate from the TCP socket code and coroutine code (which spawns a separate instance of AI for each connecting client). I want to be able to further isolate the AI code so that that part can be a module coded by anyone in their language of choice. How can I do this? What tecniques/technology would enable communication between the Lua TCP socket/coroutine code and the AI module?

I obtained my associates degree as a programmer/analyst a couple years ago and I know a good amount about programming on the .NET framework. I'm even certified on the .NET 4 framework as a web application developer. However, since I was only able to obtain my associates degree, I was deprived at my college on the low-level basics and operations of computers and basic computer science information. Plus it will also serve as help tool for other if they need help. I would like to install something locally on my machine or network, either ASP or PHP is fine. Which software would you recommend? Is it good idea, bad idea? Has anyone done it? I have worked with wordpress and I like it but I am afraid it is not best for code snippets. Any thoughts I do use source control. • All video players display black screen.

  I'm working in 10.04 Lucid. All my video players (Movie Player and VLC) and the preview windows in editors (OpenShot and Pitivi) will only display a black screen when playing a video. The sound is fine and the videos work fine on other computers. I have tried multiple formats from varying sources .MOV taken from old ffmpeg projects, .AVI straight from a camera, .MP4 using h.264 from OpenShot on another system, .OGV from a gtk-recordmydesktop session on this very computer. I even get a pure black screen in the viewer when starting a remote session in VNC. This box has a GeForce 8400 GS using the Nvidia drivers in case it may be a card problem or setting.

  I keep seeing people wanting to do this (or something very similar) and then being surprised at how much it might cost them if they went with Windows Azure. Time for a Q&A. Short answer: No, definitely not. Madness, sheer madness. (Hopefully that was clear enough) Longer answer: No because It would cost you a heck of a lot more than just about any other approach to running a blog. A site that can easily be run on a shared hosting solution (as many blogs do today) does not require the rich capabilities of Windows Azure. Capabilities such as simplified deployed and management, dedicated resources, elastic resources, “unlimited” storage etc. It is simply not the type of application the Windows Azure Platform has been designed for. • Intermittent Copy/Paste Problem in RDP

  If you use RDP to remotely connect to your servers, you've probably encountered a clipboard issue where copy/paste stops working.  A quick Google search on the problem indicates you can easily fix the problem by logging out/logging back in or killing/restarting rdpclip.exe on the remote server.  Here's an article which covers this topic. But what do you do when copy/paste is intermittent?  It works one second, stops working for 5-30 seconds, and then on its own starts working again.  This is what’s occurring in our new non-production environment.  The DBA team is setting up 16 new physical servers and 5 new virtual machines.  I haven’t found a server where this ISN’T happening.  This intermittent copy/paste issue is driving me crazy!

• Ops Center Update 2 is available!

  Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center Release 1, Update 2 (12.1.2.0.0) is available. This release includes support for Oracle Solaris 11.1 and Oracle Linux 6.3, the ability to attach a network multiple times to an LDom guest using the same vswitch, support for HMP 2.2.3, improved options for adding users from remote directory servers, and a few other useful features.
