• How to access dev server in Ubuntu VirtualBox guest on Windows 7 host?

  I'm running a Google App Engine dev server on Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop in a VirtualBox VM, on a Windows 7 host. According to this question I have the following setup: The VM networking is set to use Host-only network adapter. Internet connection sharing (ICS) is enabled in Windows. For ICS, the Windows VirtualBox network port and the Ubuntu wired connection have fixed IPs. The Ubuntu VM can access the internet. I can ping the guest from the host. On the host, if I put the guest IP address in Chrome's address bar, it says it can not connect. What do I need to do from here to access the GAE dev server that is running on Localhost:8080?

• Where should "display functions" live in an MVC web app?

  I'm using the Yii Framework which is an MVC php framework that is pretty similar to your standard web-based MVC framework. I want to display the related data from a many-to-many table as a list of strings in my view. Assuming a table schema like: tag { id, name } post { id, title, content, date } post_tag { post_id, tag_id } A post will display like: Date: 9/27/2012 Title: Some Title Content: blah blah blah... Tags: Smart Funny Cool Informative I can achieve this by doing something like this in my Post view: <?php echo join(' ', array_map(function($tag) { return $tag->name; }, $model->tags)); ?> (where $model->tags is an array of Tag objects associated with my model) My questions are: Is this amount of code/logic okay in the view? (Personally I think I'd rather just reference a property or call a single function.) If not, where should this code live? In the model? the controller? a helper? Potentially I may want to use in in other views as well. Ultimately I think its purely a display issue which would make me think it should be in the view, but then I have to repeat the code in any view I want to use it in.

• I need a form to tie MySQL Records together.

  I need a HTML-based form to tie database records together. The user scenario that I envision is somthing like this: A super-user does a search of the database and is delivered a table of records based on that search; each record is numbered with the database-record id. There would also be two text fields next to each record. These text fields would allow: the user to make a reference from one record to another. For example, a user could enter into record id #457 the integer 242 to indicate that there is a correlation with record ID #242. The user would also describe the type of relationship it is. This could be accomplished with a simple integer in the second field that indicates the type of relationship between the two records. When the super-user hits the submit button, all of these relationships are saved in a mySqljoin table. One option is to give me advice on how to implement and code this myself in PHP. However, before I reinvent the wheel, another option is to lead me to a free script that does something similar.

• Maker Faire Report - Teaching Kids Java SE Embedded for Internet of Things (IoT)

  I had a great time at this year's Maker Faire 2014 in San Mateo, Calif. where Jake Kuramoto and the AppsLab crew including Noel Portugal, Anthony Lai, Raymond, and Tony set up a super demo at the DiY table. It was a simple way to learn how Java SE Embedded technology could be used to code the Internet of Things (IoT) devices on the table. The best part of our set-up was seeing the kids sit down and do some coding without all the complexity of a Computer Science course. It was very encouraging to see how interested the kids were when walking them through the programming steps, then seeing their eyes light up when telling them, "You just coded a Java enabled Internet of Things device!" as the Raspberry Pi-connected devices turned on or started to move from their Java Embedded program. See: The AppsLab at Maker Faire It will be interesting to see how this next generation of kids grow up with all these Internet of Things devices around them and watch how they will program them. Hopefully, they will be using Java SE Embedded technology to do so. • Linux web server shared hosting file errors

  I'm using a shared hosting to host my website and have some problems with files from time to time. First, one of my file (php) was missing a part of code (nothing to do with hackers just a random piece of code was missing), then after some time a value inside a mysql table was also missing a part, then a whole table column disappeared, after that a whole file on my site disappeared and lastly again some code from a file disappeared, my hosting service says it has nothing to do with them, but this is stupid, how can this happen, no hacker attack could do such a thing, I believe it's some kind of a disk corruption or bad backup. Anyone have any ideas?

  Cracked a Multicasting problem this evening for one of my Canadian Tweeple. They wanted to mulitcast some MSMQ messages to another machine but nothing was arriving in the listening queue. A local queue could be configured to listen to the particular IP address/port in use and messages would arrive, though. Looking at the network traffic, nothing was going onto the wire for the IP address/port pair until they looked at traffic to the VMWare adapter. The machine had a virtual machine to simulate a remote computer and when they changed the setup from NAT to Bridge, multicasting burst into life.

• The new SSIS in SQL2005/SQL2008 are oversized

  I studied the new MERGE Statement and there is a nice example for importing a flatfile. INSERT <Table> SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET BULK <Import-Flat-File>, <Format-File>... seems to be a good replacment for such a simple job and avoids to build a SSIS-Package. EXEC XP_CMDSHELL bcp <Table or View> out <Flat-File> ... is almost simpler than building an SSIS, isn't it? (I know that the MERGE-Statement doesn't run on a SQL2005)

I have a laptop Toshiba Portege Z830 where Wifi've already worked under Windows 7. But after migration on Ubuntu 10.12. I'm not able get it work. For me and my point of view, currently, this works and its enough for my requirements. Well, you have Java & Hibernate, C# & Entity Framework and I'm doing this :-/ and it's confusing me. Should I use MySQL with Entity Framework? What is the best way for collaboration between C# and MySQL? • Install Ubuntu on Asus Eee-PC 1005PE - Dealing with special partitions

  I have an Asus EeePC 1005PE netbook and im planning on doing a massive re-partitioning (going to install Ubuntu, Mint, XP, etc) Ive noticed it has 2 "special" partitions: a 10Gb Fat32 RESTORE hidden partition (used by BIOS "F9 recovery" feature) and a 16Mb "unknown" partition at the end of the drive (used by BIOS "Boot Booster" feature). So, for both partitions, my question is: Can I move/resize the recovery partition freely? What are the requirements for it? (i mean, for it still be found by BIOS when i press F9/Activate BootBooster?). Partition table order? Partition type? Flags? Label? UUID? Can i make it a Logical (instead of primary) partition? Does it must be the flagged as boot? And, more importantly: where can i find any official documentation about it? Ive ready many (mis)information about it... some say Boot Booster partition must be last (in partition table), some say Recovery must be 2nd, that it must be bootable, etc. How can I know what is really needed for the BIOS to use both F9 and Boot Booster? Note: Im using gParted from a Live USB Stick (Mint 10 / Ubuntu 10.10), and ive noticed that, since the filesystem type of the Boot Booster is not recongnized, it cant move or resize it. Can I delete it and re-create it somewhere else? Whenever i create a 0xEF partition gParted crashes and quits and i cannot open it again (must delete the partition using fdisk / cfdisk)

• Atheros AR5BWB222 Wireless Intermittent Connectivity

  So I recently installed Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire V3-551 laptop. I have an Atheros AR5BWB222 wireless adapter. Everything works fine except for the wireless. I can sometimes connect to the wireless, but most of the time it will be making an attempt to connect and then enver connect. Or it will connect, but it will only stay connected for about 10 seconds before getting disconnected from the wireless. All the other drivers updated through System SettingsAdditional Drivers are fine, even the Ethernet. Its just the problem with the wireless. I've tried a power managment setting, tried looking for additional updates, but nothing fixes my problem. Is there any solution for my particular wireless card?

• how to warehouse data that is not needed from sql server

  I have been asked to truncate a large table in sql server 2008. The data is not needed but might be needed once every two years. It will NEVER have to be changed, only viewed. The question is, since I don't need the data on a day-to-day basis, what do I do with it to protect and back it up? Please keep in mind that I will need to have it accessible maybe once every two years, and it is FINE for us if the recovery process takes a few hours. The entire table is about 3 million rows and I need to truncate it to about 1 million rows.

• Ubuntu 12.04 crashes on startup for newer versions of Linux, possibly related to WiFi

  My computer gets to the screen with the Ubuntu logo and the orange/white dots, and then the screen goes black, spits out a lot of error messages, and cannot boot. (If it'd be helpful, I can take a photo of my screen in this state.) I've found I can successfully boot if my wireless card is turned off. As soon as I turn it on, my computer crashes with the same black screen of death. I can also successfully boot if I choose "Previous Linux Version" and select a few versions back (I think 3.0.6). Here are some relevant details about my setup: Ubuntu 12.04 Computer: Lenovo x230 Wireless: Realtek RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter Processor: Intel Core i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz × 4 RAM: 16 GB of RAM Thank you!!!

  I have searched for awhile now for ways to fix my problem but have come up with nothing. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop computer. I am unable to find the Enable Wireless button in the network area. It just doesn't appear. Everything else works on my laptop. I believe it's the drivers for my USB network adapter. The main monitor is plugged into a vga port, and the second plugged into a display port then an adapter to vga the system is a Dell Optiplex 790 and the graphics card is (according to lspci) a VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) I am running the classic Gnome desktop though the problem occurs in Unity as well.
