• Problems compiling with Quickly

  Welcome to another of my questions about compiling! :P So, after days of stress trying to compile my app, first manually, after porting the project to Quickly, I decided to create the project from scratch using this time Quickly. Now I've finished the app, it works great using quickly run and I haven't added any new file, just removed, replaced or modified. But it can't be compiled using quickly package --verbose --extras... why, if there doesn't seems to be errors related with my project? The fail happens because python-mkdebian doesn't haves enough parameters to work.   I'm running ubuntu 11.10 (oneiric) on this machine, and suddenly, apt is unable to update properly. Also it looks pretty much like, say, the us mirror. But oddly enough, the IP it lists, seems to point to a debian package server, which obviously does not contain ubuntu packages. So, is this a local problem that I can fix somehow (and if so, how?) or is there actually some server down right now?

• New partnership allows auto-transposition of client/server application to Windows Azure

  The economics of IT is changing rapidly, and organizations are searching to widen and secure availability of their systems and at the same time lower costs which is exactly what the cloud meant to do. Running your systems on Microsoft’s Windows Azure cloud for example would improve and secure the availability, accessibility and scalability (both up and down) of your systems and support the new IT economics. However, in order to take advantage of the cloud's promise of lower cost of ownership, the applications must be built or adjusted to work on that platform and in most cases this is not a simple task.  Even existing web applications cannot always be transferred to Azure without some changes, and for client/server applications, the task is way more challenging even to the point where it seems impossible. The reason is the gaps between the client/server desktop technology and the cloud's. For that reason, most of the known methodologies to migrate existing client/server applications actually involve rewrite of the desktop systems for the cloud. A unique approach is introduced by Visual WebGui which creates a virtualization layer atop ASP.Net web server, it moves the transformed or generated .Net code to that layer, and then using a patent pending protocol it renders a user interface within a plain browser. The end result is pure .NET code that is a base code for a pure rich web application and now due to a collaboration with Microsoft Windows Azure Visual WebGui provides the shortest path from client/server to the Azure cloud by being able to handle close to 95% of the transformation to the cloud platform in an automatic way. • Why does apt-get install Skype easily while aptitude complains about MAJOR dependency errors?

  I was trying to install Skype on Ubuntu 13.04, from the Canonical repositories. With apt-get it worked easily, while aptitude had a huge problem with dependencies and proposed a complicated solution. Why is this so? • Is the output of Eclipse's incremental java compiler used in production? Or is it simply to support Eclipse's features?

  I'm new to Java and Eclipse. One of my most recent discoveries was how Eclipse comes shipped with its own java compiler (ejc) for doing incremental builds. Eclipse seems to by default output incrementally built class files to the projRoot/bin folder. I've noticed too that many projects come with ant files to build the project that uses the java compiler built into the system for doing the production builds. Coming from a Windows/Visual Studio world where Visual Studio is invoking the compiler for both production and debugging, I'm used to the IDE having a more intimate relationship with the command-line compiler. I'm used to the project being the make file. So my mental model is a little off. Is whats produced by Eclipse ever used in production? Or is it typically only used to support Eclipse's features (ie its intellisense/incremental building/etc)? Is it typical that for the final "release" build of a project, that ant, maven, or another tool is used to do the full build from the command line? Mostly I'm looking for the general convention in the Eclipse/Java community. I realize that there may be some outliers out there who DO use ecj in production, but is this generally frowned upon? Or is this normal/accepted practice?

• Write DAX queries in Report Builder #ssrs #dax #ssas #tabular

  If you use Report Builder with Reporting Services, you can use DAX queries even if the editor for Analysis Services provider does not support DAX syntax. In fact, the DMX editor that you can use in Visual Studio editor of Reporting Services (see a previous post on that), is not available in Report Builder. However, as Sagar Salvi commented in this Microsoft Connect entry, you can use the DAX query text in the query of a Dataset by using the OLE DB provider instead of the Analysis Services one. I think it’s a good idea to show the steps required. First, create a DataSet using the OLE DB connection type, and provide the connection string the provider (Provider), the server name (Data Source) and the database name (Initial Catalog), such as: Provider=MSOLAP;Data Source=SERVERNAME\\TABULAR;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorks Tabular Model SQL 2012 Then, create a Dataset using the data source previously defined, select the Text query type, and write the DAX code in the Query pane: You can also use the Query Designer window, that doesn’t provide any particular help in writing the DAX query, but at least can show a preview of the result of the query execution. • Modernising settings, packages

  The update manager (possibly combined with the janitor) does a reasonable job of bringing packages up to date with a new release, removing ones that are replaced by different projects etc. However, I'm left with the lingering feeling that quite a few settings are lingering from old releases. For example, some packages may be left around that I installed myself whereas now the functionality is provided by default. Another example is that my user doesn't get the new theme, and the panel bar is a mess. I can compare against an inactive user on the same system: everything seems tidier. There are also things like the explosion of System Preferences, user groups (inactive user, more recently created, is in groups that the older, active user isn't). In other areas (e.g. default font) I do seem to get given the new defaults. Another example is Spotlight-equivalent search. I remember Beagle and Tracker, I remember removing tracker when it used all system RAM and swap for 2 entire release cycles, but I don't know what I'm "supposed" to be using now. Is there even a default indexing-search installed and exposed? aptitude install ubuntu-desktop doesn't do anything, so the basics are in place package-wise. Is there any way to update my settings to the modern "Ubuntu way" without reinstalling from scratch? Can I do so selectively i.e. show the differences? Most of the time package management on Linux is an absolute joy compared to the alternatives, but if the desktop gets messed up after only a release or two, we're back to reinstalling just like Windows.

I was in Indonesia the week before and picked up a small bug and had no voice. This was a new challenge for me, and Microsoft offered to cancel my sessions, but I figured why would I let no voice stop me from delivering my sessions!! • Problem Installing Xubuntu 12.04 Audio-Video codecs

  I used Crouton to install Xubuntu 12.04.4 LTS with the XFCE environment on my HP Chromebook 11. I've gotten it all fully installed and everything; the only thing I'm doing now is the basic setup things, like adding codecs and other things like LibreOffice, VLC, Firefox, Ubuntu Software Center, etc. This information I got from 2 sources: http://www.efytimes.com/e1/fullnews.asp?edid=137269 http://www.binarytides.com/better-xubuntu-14-04/ . I'm currently on the same step at both URLs, which is #6 on Link 1 and #8 on Link 2. Per the articles, which both said the same thing, I typed in sudo apt-get install xubuntu-restricted-extras libavcodec-extra and it didn't do anything. It just kept on saying the same thing: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package libavcodec-extra I've spend the last hour or so scouring the internet for a solution, for a hint even at what is going on. I don't want to do a clean reinstall, for two reasons: 1) it's takes like 1.5h just to get the croot fully installed, and 2) everything but this out of what I've done so far (up to #6 at Link 1 & up to #8 at Link 2) works except the audio. I've already installed flash, so YouTube works fine. It's just I can't hear any audio. Please help? Thanks in advance. I appreciate all the great help I've been getting from AskUbuntu lately. You all are great.

• Import SSIS Project in Denali CTP1

  For years Analysis Services has had the ability to take an existing database from a server and reverse engineer it into a BIDS project.  This is extremely useful when all you have is the running instance of the database and the project that created it has long since disappeared.  Reverse engineering has never been a feature of SSIS until now. Let me walk you through the simple steps. The first step is that you obviously have to have a project deployed to an SSIS Catalog.  I will do a video on this soon but in case you can’t wait then my good buddy Jamie Thomson has written it up here As you can see I have a project called imaginatively “Denali1” with one package “Package.dtsx” The next thing we need to do is fire up BIDS and choose the right project type (Integration Services Import Project) Now we just follow the wizard.  We make sure we specify on which server to find the Catalog and in which folder to look for the project. Next the setting are validated and we are greeted with the familiar review screen before the creation of our new project from the deployed project happens Hit Import and away we go The result is just what we wanted.

• Multiple instances of Intellitrace.exe process

  Not so long ago I was confronted with a very bizarre problem… I was using visual studio 2010 and whenever I opened up the Test Impact view I would suddenly see my pc perf go down drastically…  Investigating this problem, I found out that hundreds of “Intellitrace.exe” processes had been started on my system and I could not close them as they would re-start as soon as I would close one.  That was very weird.  So I knew it had something to do with the Test Impact but how can this feature and Intellitrace.exe going crazy be related?  After a bit of thinking I remembered that a teammate (Etienne Tremblay, ALM MVP) had told me once that he had seen this issue before just after installing a MOCKING FRAMEWORK that uses the .NET Profiler API…  Apparently there’s a conflict between the test impact features of Visual Studio and some mocking products using the .NET profiler API…  Maybe because VS 2010 also uses this feature for Test Impact purposes, I don’t know… Anyways, here’s the fix…  Go to your VS 2010 and click the “Test” menu.  Then go to the “Edit Test Settings” and choose EACH test setting file applying the following actions (normally 2 files being “Local” and TraceAndTestImpact”: -          Select the Data And Diagnostic option on the left -          Make sure that the ASP.NET Client Proxy for Intellitrace and Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Make sure that the Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Save and close   Edit Test Settings   Problem solved…  For me having to choose between the “Test Impact” features and the “Mocking Framework” was a no brainer, bye bye test impact…  I did not investigate much on this subject but I feel there might be a way to have them both working by enabling one after the other in a precise sequence…  Feel free to leave a comment if you know how to make them both work at the same time!   Hope this helps someone out there !

• Problem with sound driver

  I had problem that sound had lag in Flash. (Other than that, there was no problem.) On the internet, I found that installing OSS4 might help me. So I installed OSS4, but there was some problems (no sound on Flash, and couldn't use function key on the laptop - which is quite annoying), so I try to remove OSS4 and re-installing sound modules. After some mess-up, the whole sound was gone. I used Ubuntu for a year, but I don't know how to use the terminal well (All I know is basic commands like sudo, ls, or apt-get).. Now I'm trying to recover by following instructions at this page, but I have some problems... :( When I try to follow instructions: sudo aplay -l finds no sound drivers. find /lib/modules/'uname -r' | grep snd (backtick changed to ' due to code markup) returns nothing. When I try to do sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-'uname -r' linux-generic, it says that it can't find linux-restricted-modules-3.0.0-13-generic package. lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio" returns this, which doesn't contain anything about the name of the driver. Writing sudo modprobe sn and pressing tab twice only returns sudo modprobe sn9c102. sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils linux-image-'uname -r' linux-ubuntu-modules-'uname -r' libasound2 returns this, and didn't change non of above. sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) fails because it can't find the package linux-alsa-driver-modules-3.0.0-13-generic. Compiling ALSA driver doesn't work. When I try to make, it says that /lib/modules/3.0.0-13-generic/build/include/linux/modversions.h doesn't exist. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. Can anyone help me? I can re-install Ubuntu, but I don't want to....

• Where do I start in regards to making a Gnome/Unity Form Application

  Ok so I am familiar with developing Form and Console applications on Windows using Visual Studio .Net with C#, but where do I start when it comes to Linux distro's like Ubuntu, is there an equivalent? How would one go about matching what they can do in a Windows environment with .Net and C# in a Linux environment without .Net coding in something like Java or C/C++? I am aware of Eclipse, does eclipse have a form designer or do you have to code the design of any Gnome/Unity forms manually? Can I use eclipse to write the Linux equivalent of a console application, that you just double click on to run? I also know about Mono, but the idea is that I want to learn how to develop software without using anything in the Microsoft stack and am not sure where to start. What is the standard language/framework used to develop these types of applications on Linux? As I become more proficient with Visual Studio, C# and .Net, it has struck me that without these Microsoft tools, I am nothing. I am only capable of developing for the Microsoft OS and this scares me. This isn't some anti Microsoft thing, Microsoft makes some incredible Software/Hardware/Operating Systems/IDE's, but it is generally a bad idea to put all of your eggs in one basket so if I want to learn how to develop Terminal and Gnome/Unity form applications where in the world do I start? I have used Linux on and off for years, but Windows has been my primary OS. However I have watched Linux get better and better and as much as I love Windows 7, I am dubious about Windows 8 (I for one will sorely miss my start menu)! Obviously MS aren't going anywhere anytime soon and I could spend the the next couple of decades developing for .Net without any issues but just because you can get away with something doesn't always mean it's a good idea. • Distributing an Android game with plugins via the market

  I'm new to Android development, and was wondering how the following could be achieved within the confines of the Android market as a distribution channel: One main application, which handles the main menu, networking, high scores, etc. Several games which can be launched from the main menu, which all work within the same eco system. The main application is not just a pseudo launcher for other games, these different games will share high scores and other achievements/preferences. In a traditional package management system such as apt, pacman or yum, this could be handled quite happily through dependencies. This does not appear to be possible via the Android market. The closest I've seen is when apps scan to check if the required app is installed, and if not, launches the market and asks the user to download the app. This sounds like a very messy solution. It also begs the question, would they download the game (plugin) first, which then downloads the main shell application? Or would they download the main shell application, and when they navigate to a menu item which says "Play game", then it scans for any installed games, and if none exist, redirects to the market? Also, I'm not even sure if it is possible to dig up the package from another application on the device, and start invoking classes from within (e.g. when you want to launch the game (plugin)) A final option is just to have a 3rd component which is a .jar that each game includes, which effectively contains the entire shell application. Then each game would appear to have the same menu, but it would become a nightmare as soon as you want to update the menu component and have to re-release each game. It would be especially worse if other people released games (plugins) based on the same framework and didn't update them. Is there any other options which I haven't thought of? Has anyone else solved this or seen a solution in any apps they've installed (doesn't have to be games)? cheers.

  Color identifiers make it easier for developers to quickly read and understand the code on screen.  One of the many features provided by JustCode is the ability to colorize additional items that Visual Studio does not allow you to colorize by default.  The colorization of items such as methods, properties, events, variables, and method parameters can easily be tweaked to your specific needs.   I'm strugling to install rgdal library on Ubuntu 12.10. Installation from within R results in error: Error: gdal-config not found The gdal-config script distributed with GDAL could not be found. If you have not installed the GDAL libraries, you can download the source from http://www.gdal.org/ If you have installed the GDAL libraries, then make sure that gdal-config is in your path. Try typing gdal-config at a shell prompt and see if it runs. If not, use: --configure-args='--with-gdal-config=/usr/local/bin/gdal-config' with appropriate values for your installation.
