• Salary Negotiation; How Best to Broach the Subject? [closed]

  So I have an upcoming performance review / salary increase and I am at a point in which I believe I will need to negotiate a larger raise than what is to be proposed. As I suspect this may be the case I have been reading as much information on the subject (negotiation) as possible. I work for a great company and fortunately I work under some really talented and reasonable managers. Unfortunately, I am not sure how best to bring up the subject. I don't want to sound greedy and I don't want to start off on the wrong foot. For the sake of argument, assume that I am actually worth more than I am being paid at the moment and I would like to make a counter offer for a relatively large increase (say, boss says 4%, I would like to counter with 15%. I know that seems very large, but I believe I have a case for it.) My question to you, those who are/have been on the other side of this scenario, is how should I start the conversation? What approach would make you most receptive to my plea? I've never negotiated before and I just don't want to start off on the wrong foot. My direct manager is a very straightforward individual, so sugarcoating is not necessary here, but at the same time, I don't want to seem overly aggressive or demanding. • Ubuntu 12.04 "stuttering"

  When I log in to the desktop Ubuntu seems to "stutter". Doing pretty much anything causes the cursor to freeze for a few seconds, and the rest of the screen updates something like every 15 seconds (during these 15 seconds I can still move the cursor). For example, opening the home folder I first see no effect, followed by a semi-transparent home folder, and finally the folder as it should be (this can take like 30 seconds); no animation, just three individual frames. Also, I sometimes don't see a window for a program, even though the program in question is supposed to be "up". Since this is my first experience of Linux, I confess I have no idea where to start - searching the web I only found problems with complete freezes/crashes requiring rebooting, as opposed to this "stuttering". I installed Ubuntu 12.04 32bit from a bootable USB stick a couple of days ago, right after a fresh Vista 32bit install. Thinking the stuttering might stop if I updated Ubuntu, I managed to install approx 270 updates through the Update Manager, but the stuttering was still there. Apart from the updates, I haven't installed any software other than what was included on the bootable USB stick. Vista and Ubuntu are on a single Crucial m4 SSD, in a dual-boot setup, with GRUB. CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX (with the recommended proprietary drivers) RAM: 2GB DDR2

• How can I justify a technology over another? (Java over .NET)

  We are working in a Java/.NET company and my team and I are planning a project for a client. One of the requirements is that the project has to be done in .NET I've asked about this requirement, and the client said that it doesn't matter, and that if I have a good reason we can use other technology. But, I have to justify the decision. As a Project Manager / Analyst I'm interested in making the project in Java because: The team knows java much better, regarding the language and frameworks I don't know anything about .NET technology (and maybe we could make bad decisions thinking in a Java way to do things) There are other people in company that have more skills in .NET but they have other projects with more priority. For experience, I'm sure that if we use Java, the project will have much more quality. But this arguments could be weak from the client perspective. How can I justify making the project in Java? EDIT: I'm not asking if one technology is better than other. "It's not a technology war" question.

  When setting up a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 system, I went through the motions to set up IIS, MS SQL Server 2008, and Visual Studio 2010 to use as a test-bed. One of the immediate benefits of setting up such a system is that most development can be done remotely: MS SQL Server Management Studio, Visual Studio’s Web development suite, as well as file shares, remote desktop, etc, make for a great way to remotely develop in ‘pristine’ conditions. But there are drawbacks, too, such as needing to deal with firewall issues, not being able to penetrate past a router or the requirement of setting up a VPN. One of the problems I encountered when trying to remote into the MS SQL Server 2008 that I’d set up was the following error: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not open a connection to SQL Server I followed the below steps, and was able to connect to the server after just a few moments of tinkering: 1. From the server in question, surf to this Microsoft article, and download and install the Firewall rules modification program. Never drop your firewall, even on a development machine, unless you have a really good reason to. 2. Launch SQL Server Configuration Manager. Navigate to SQL Server Network Configuration, then Protocols for your server name. Enable TCP/IP and Named Pipes by right-clicking and choosing Enable for each given Protocol Name. 3. Restart the SQL Server service from Services (or from command line, subsequently run “net stop mssqlserver” then “net start mssqlserver”. 4. Try your remote connection once more, and you should be able to connect. It’s not a terribly difficult concept, but one of the more challenging tasks developers face is dealing with environment setup. And while there is a certain blurred-line overlap between software development and server administration, sometimes the latter is daunting, especially given that you might set up only a handful of servers during your career.

• Moving soon, fiancee has new job: how to transition?

  I've found myself in a sort of conundrum lately and I figured Stack Overflow would be the place to ask this question. I normally post under my personal account here, but I'm writing in anonymously this time so as to make sure my co-workers don't find out too early that I'll be leaving them behind in a few months. My fiancee just landed a great software development job at a very large, stable company. She'll be starting after she graduates and just after we get married (May to June-ish). Her compensation and benefits package will be more than enough to take care of both of us, so I agreed to step down from my current position so we could move to a larger city with more opportunities. I'll probably take a few weeks off to decompress, but I don't want to stay unemployed very long. Since there will be less pressure on me to bring home a second income though, we're not as adverse to risk as we normally would be. I'm currently debating whether to eventually seek employment at a small company, a larger company, do contract work, or do something else entirely. I haven't been in the software development business long (2-3 years plus some small personal projects), but I've seen what things can be like at a startup (my first job) and at a more established, mid-sized business (my current job). Most importantly what I'm looking for out of a new employment opportunity is challenge and variety. Does this situation describe anyone on SO? If so, what did you do/what are you doing? How is it working out for you? Programming is a pleasure as well as a career skill for me, so I want to make sure it stays that way. Thanks to all in advance for any responses.

• Three Ubuntu 12.04 + Xfce problems

  sorry to bother you, but I wanted to set up a minimal Ubuntu 12.04 with minimal Xfce and probably due to my unawareness of several important things, not everything is working properly. -Sometimes when I shutdown I get error message from iwlwifi: It starts with a time out error about sending a power table and after several other errors it says "On demand firmware reload and "Unable to initialize device". And the shutdown stops there so I can only use hard shutdown. -Also when I boot, I often boot to a black screen, but pressing ctrl+alt+f1 gets me to the login prompt (I do not use a login manager). But then I sometimes cannot type. Seems probably more like a X server problem. When it works I only see the Plymouth splash for a very short time or sometimes not at all. -And the last problem is the most annoying one: Frequently Xfce freezes completely. I think ctrl+alt+f1 works sometimes, but other times I also have to use hard shutdown. When it freezes the cpu fan gets louder. I've been using Xbuntu for a while before, but with "real" Linux I am more a beginner, so I hope you forgive my questions Thanks

• How do I install Kodos in 12.10?

  In previous Ubuntu version I used Kodos extensively. But the package has been dropped in 12.10. It's a neat regular expression testing tool. It's hard to find an alternative that is not Windows only (or Air, or uses action script which bails on more complicated RegEx, or works in Wine - well kinda, but not really..., etc.). So I tried to install Kodos from source, which seems to work (download sourceball and setup.py) but it won't run because of missing PyQT dependencies (that I can't manage to fulfill with anything install-able trough standard packages). I then tried to install PyQT manually (which seems to require manual install of SIP and QT too) and instead of pip I have to use configure.py and qmake. It throws error after error at me. I tried to overcome one after another for over an hour but no luck. It even managed to break Calibre and Music Brains Picard. So I purged all the stuff, reinstalled python-sipand python-qt4 from the standard packages and gave up. Has anyone managed to get Kodos running on 12.10? Or any hints on how to do it?

• Windows Server or Linux for final project

  A few weeks ago I came up with an idea to develop a mobile app which will direct students in my university to the nearest printer availiable. The whole thing is part of my final project. The Android based app will need to perform the following tasks: The user's location in the campus is sent to the server. Assume this part works just fine. The server sends an SNMP request to the printers in the user's vicinity. I'll probably use PHP or Python for that part. The data requested by SNMP is processed and sent back to the client My question concerns the server. The university's IT manager offered me a designated server for development, which sounds great. Now I need to choose which OS I want installed on the server - Windows server or Linux (don't know which versions). I don't have any server programming/operating experince, but generally speaking I feel more comfortable in Windows enviroment (just because that has always been my OS). I don't have much time for learning a new OS, but when does it make sense generally to host or develop server side applications on a Windows environment versus a Linux environment?

• AR9485 wireless card loses ability to connect after hibernation

  This has happened twice now, the first time it happened I just reinstalled Ubuntu. The only things that I've been messing with in terms of networking, have been restarting the network-manager service after I resume from hibernate (because it never works right after resume, but restarting the service fixes that), and changing my mac address with ifconfig wlan0 down && ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 11:22:33:44:55 && ifconfig wlan0 up. using tail | dmesg returns a bunch of attempts to connect, saying something like authenticating ... okay you're connected! now I'm going to just disconnect because I feel like it. (reason=3). Any ideas? If it helps maybe I'll add a picture of the tail|dmesg output later. My wireless drivers are as follows: Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter Hamachi Network Interface Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter Here is a pastebin of some terminal outputs that could help. Also, the reddit thread has a few answers, for anyone curious. It's located here. It is entirely possible that it's just my school wifi blocking out my laptop, and my home wifi sucks. • Can't get my graphics driver (GMA 3150) to work

  I've been searching like crazy trying to find a fix for this, it's the only thing that's not completely working on my setup. I see posts where people say it should be working but it just isn't. I have a Gateway LT2802u netbook and I installed 11.10 on this 2 days ago. Everything works except for accelerated graphics. At first I couldn't watch a simple flash video at all, but somehow I got it to work. Now the last problem I have is I can't watch HD videos, my screen resolution won't go higher than 1024x600, and my under my graphics driver it says "Unknown". After doing as much research as possible, I've come to the conclusion that it's the GMA 3150 graphics driver. There is a bunch of talk on it all over the interwebs but nothing lately. I've tried the fixes that some people have used but most when I try to get the package it's no longer there or available if that makes sense. I'm loving everything Ubuntu has to offer but it'll really bite if I can't use it any more because of this problem. Does anybody have any ideas? You'd really be helping a lot.

Then in the 3rd round was the managerial round where the guy started about my experience and whether I have vaptured any requirement and handled and trained any teams. This went pretty well for around 50 mins . Then there was the awkward question , Interviewer: why amI looking for a change? Me: coz I want to explore my carrier options? Interviewer: But your current company is big enough and you can explore options over there? (This was supposedly the trap) Me: Apart from that I am missing the flexibilty of working with Us and Europe based company as my current company is not that flexible. Interviewer: What exactly you don't find flexible. Me: The login time . Even if you get late by 1sec you might have to explin. Though this is not a big problem , still I will prefer flexibilty as we are working really hard. Interviewer: Allright ( Then couple of more questions) , Hope to C U Ya , that's pretty much it . Now I called up HR and they say , they are yet to get the feedback from Interviewer. Did I screw it? I mean does some one really have to pretend always by saying positive things about company and manager though not saying negative things?

  I've really done a mess while upgrading 12.04 to 12.10, or my PC did, or ubuntu did, I can't really tell. The situation now is I have a dual booting machine, Windows 7 and ubuntu 12.10 -When turning on the PC, I can't access boot options, I've tried every thing, esc, f1 f8, f10 (I have a Hp pavilion) but all I can see is a short-lasting screen with three lines reading something like "error:files not found" or "link not found". So the PC turns to the Grub loader screen. This is already a BIG problem. It means I can't change boot order, and I'm diperate, since it doensn't seem that repairing my operating systems will bring my BIOS back. -If I chose Ubuntu in grup, it loades but then frezes on the desktop, I may be having problem with unity3d, or compiz, which was reported to be crashing the first times I started ubuntu. Now, after turning off and on the pc several times, no crash is reported again. Ubuntu just load my background image and nothing else. Not the side menu, not the header, nothing. Althogh the system seems "functioning", when I press the power button on the PC, for example, the normal shutdown dialog window appears. -If I chose Windows, Grubs tells me that something is not found, and to press any key to continue; I do it and then Windows loads perfectly. What I now want to do is 1- use EasyBSD to change boot order and boot Windows partition first 2- delete the ubuntu partitions from within windows disk manager What I except happening is that My PC turns to, or near to factory booting settings: I press the power button and Windows loads without asking me nothing I have acess to all my hardisk from withing windows Is that what will really happen? Are there danger I'm not seeing? What I don't except happening is The BIOS access key return functioning How could I eventually solve this? I would like to reinstall Ubuntu, 32 bit version this time.

Many of our acquisitions, new features in existing products, new applications, are often designed to improve the experience of the 400,000 Oracle database customers worldwide. Once you find an Oracle database customer, the next set of questions are much easier, but depend on your expertise: License Management, Upsell, and Services. Let's start with License Management: Have there been any changes to your infrastructure since you purchased the database licenses? Have you upgraded the servers on which the Oracle database is running? Have the number of users or employees increased since the last license purchase? Yes to any of these questions will lead to investigating correct licensing. The goal is to provide a "soft" license review. Oracle generally does not require any license keys to install our software, so we need to help our customers with compliance. Correct licensing is essential to managing costs, and can provide a great way to efficiently manage IT spend. You might want to contact your local Oracle Channel Manager or VAD for licensing assistance. Or, review the Software Investment Guide. Naturally, these questions can lead to upsell opportunities. If your customer has invested in Oracle technology to manage their data, that data is essential to running their business. We'll take a look at those upsell questions in a later blog post.
