  Hi all, I am in a bit of a bind. I have been contracted to create a small suite of applications for Android, iOS and WP7. Currently I am also on the market for a new notebook for development. Now the issue I have is I can either buy a consumer grade macbook and a laptop or I could just buy an 8gb Ram, SSD, i7 mackbook and virtualise windows 7. I have never used a mac or macbook before so before I go purchase anything I would like to know what your thoughts are on this. Has anyone any experience with this?

  I'm new to Ubuntu and recently installed CrossOver Games Trial on Ubuntu 12.04, didn't like it, tried to uninstall it but simply refused to go away , so I just went on and deleted the folders in the File System. Problem is that now there are 4 icons left on the Unity Start Panel under "installed applications", and I don´t know how to remove it. Actually, could anyone tell me how to delete any shortcut that is created on the Start Panel? Is there a way to do it? Thank you very much!

• System bar not showing when using the macbuntu theme

  i think i really need your assistance in this.I've installed ubuntu 10.10 and this mac theme and so far it works fine. This morning i upgraded to 11.04 and it also went well. i just realise some of the effects were gone. so i open compizconfig settings manager, i've tried to enable the destop cube and the expo and it prompted me of desabling somethings here and there. honestly i went fast couldn't undo what i've done and i realize the new application launcher and the system bar weren't showing properly, so i decided to restart my machine.After that 'bummer', nothing were like before.no system bar, no application launcher, not menu bar for any of my applications not even for the console. How i'm going to solve this one this time. thanks for reading this and specially for helping out.

  Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s. • Different behavior when launched from terminal instead of Unity launcher

  I have written two Perl/Gtk programs. When launched from the dash menu, they run just fine. However, if I try to launch them from terminal using the very same command found in their .desktop files, their Unity launcher will be blurry and will remain inactive when clicked, if I keep it in the Unity bar. The problem is solved if the Exec part of the desktop file is replaced with perl path_to_script However, that leads to other problems, including a lintian warning and forcing all Perl GUI applications running from terminal to adopt the same launcher. This issue is quite annoying since one of the programs relies on a different (Python) program in order to be launched and this results in having a blurry and inactive launcher.

  Recently I wrote an small prototype that uses some relatively new technology. Now I wanted to verify if this prototype is usefull and could be used in real world example. But now I have a problem, how can I do that? Normally, it would be a good thing to compare the prototype with already existing similar applications and compare if you perform better, provide better usability, etc. Since I'm not aware of something similar, this is quite difficult Normally, I would see if the requirements of the customers are met. Primary device is Android, but it should support Blackberry or iOs etc. I found some frameworks using Google, e.g MonkeyTalk. • Why can't dash search find a program by its full name?

  For some applications, dash search comes up empty when searching by the application's full name. When typing the first couple of letters, it works. I wonder why... MuseScore is a fine example. When I search for "muse" in the dash search, MuseScore is found. When I search for "musescore", nothing is found. This behavior makes me distrustful of the dash search... I wonder how often it misses installed programs... I like to be able to trust the software tools I'm using.

• Should a new programmer nowadays start with C/C++ or OOP language? [closed]

  I've been a programmer for 15+ years. In my time, we all started with C or C++ and then moved to C# or Java. At that time it was a usual practice. Now, my brother wants to follow my steps and I am not sure what advice to give him. So, I am asking the community for an opinion. Should nowadays new programmer with zero programming knowledge start with functional languages (C, C++, etc.) or he should start directly with OOP languages (Java, C#, etc.)? The reply should be considered in the context of my brother's future assignments. He will mainly work on Java mobile applications as well as ASP.NET web apps. He will have to touch with desktop apps, low level programming, drivers, etc. This is the reason I am not sure if he should ever need to learn functional languages.

  I have a mathematics background but also consider career in some form of software development. In particular I'm interested in finding out what sort of industries are most likely to have more algorithm development/mathematical and logical problem solving slant rather than pure application development etc. Obviously, I'm assuming that some subset of the canonical data structures and associated algorithms (trees, lists, hash tables, sets, maps with search, insert, traversals etc.) are mostly going to be present in software development. However, where am I more likely to encounter problems of more discrete maths nature (combinatorial, graph theory, sets, strings, ...) explicitly or more likely in disguise. Any pointers much appreciated (including possible open source projects that I could use for my further search for applications and also possibly contribute to).
