  • How to install CUPS 1.6.3 on Ubuntu 13.04

    We have a CUPS server 1.3 and my freshly installed Ubuntu 13.04 PC has CUPS client 1.6.2. They are incompatible. On the CUPS web server I saw that CUPS 1.6.3 has fixed the issue. "CUPS 1.6.3 fixes some compatibility issues with servers running CUPS 1.3.12 or older..." So I would like to replace CUPS 1.6.2 with 1.6.3 on my Ubuntu 13.04 PC. I guess Ubuntu 13.10 will have CUPS 1.6.3 and later I would like to upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10. I would thus prefer avoiding installing CUPS 1.6.3 manually to avoid any troubles. Is there a way to install CUPS version 1.6.3 using a ppa or something like that ?

  • Detect Open Space in Farseer

    I'm working on a 2D platformer using XNA and Farseer. I would like the player's character to be able to grab and climb up ledges. Detecting a collision between the player and the side of a wall is simple enough with the OnCollision delegate, but I have to admit I'm a bit stumped on how to detect that there's enough clearance for the PC to mount the ledge. Essentially, I want to ensure there's an appropriately sized rectangle above and to the left or right of the PC (depending on their direction) and I'm not sure how I would check for such a space. Any suggestions on how to determine there is nothing in the simulated world within some bounding rectangle?

  • A real noob question

    I have a Hp mini netbook that has been wiped clean, there is nothing other than the bios on it, it has no DVD and I don't have an external DVD. I can change the boot order to boot from a usb device. I have downloaded ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386 I have one of these http://www.kikatek.com/P100600/34609-IOMEGA-250gb-Select-Portable-HDD-2-5-USB?source=froogle currently formatted to NTFS but I can format to exFAT I have tried Linuxlive USB creator, all that managed to do was dual boot the desktop pc that I'm working off, and when booting on the wiped clean netbook, just left me with a black screen with a blinking cursor I have also tried Unetbootin, this managed to change my 'My Computer' icon to Install Ubuntu (C:) and now again, my desktop pc dual boots with the Wubi software, the Unetbootin, wouldn't let me select my external drive to write to Please I'm a complete idiot, i need a super idiots guide to doing this Regards Jaymz

  • Empty nvidia-settings after install v. 331.67 driver on Ubuntu 14.04?

    I've followed this tutorial (with the following adjustments below) to install v. 331.67 nVidia driver. But get nvidia-settings (NVIDIA X Server Settings) empty... Then, before restart the PC, I make a xorg.conf in the nvidia-settings. The driver make Unity don't start right. So I installed nvidia-331-updates via apt-get and restarted the PC again. After that, the Unity works fine. But the nvidia-settings gets almost empty... Can someone help !?

    I took my old computer (AMD 5600+, 2GB RAM, 880gt, 250GB SATA, etc) and decided to jump and try Ubuntu for the first time. I have very very little knowledge (Red Hat when I was younger) with Linux in general. My main desktop is Windows 7 and my plan is to use the Ubuntu computer as a file server sort of speak. I want to be able to setup back up schedules from my Windows PC to the Ubuntu PC (plan on leaving this on 24/7 to double as a Seedbox) How do I go on to doing this?

  • Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 2: Platforms and Features

    This is part 2 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. In the previous post I discussed what reasons a company might have for creating a smartphone application.  In this installment I will cover some of history and state of the different platforms as well as features that can be leveraged for building enterprise smartphone applications. Platforms Before you start choosing a platform to develop your solutions on it is good to understand how we got here and what features you can leverage. History To my memory we owe all of this to a product called the Apple Newton that came out in 1987. It was the first PDA and back then I was much more of an Apple fan.  I was very impressed with this device even though it never really went anywhere.  The Palm Pilot by US Robotics was the next major advancement in PDA. It had a simple short hand window that allowed for quick stylus entry.. Later, Windows CE came out and started the broadening of the PDA market. After that it was the Palm and CE operating systems that started showing up on cell phones and for some time these were the two dominant operating systems that were distributed with devices from multiple hardware vendors. Current The iPhone was the first smartphone to take away the stylus and give us a multi-touch interface.  It was a revolution in usability and really changed the attractiveness of smartphones for the general public.  This brought us to the beginning of the current state of the market with the concept of an online store that makes it easy for customers to get new features and functionality on demand. With Android, Google made this more than a one horse race.  Not only did they come to compete, their low cost actually made them the leading OS.  Of course what made Android so attractive also is its major fault.  It is so open that it has been a target for malware which leaves consumers exposed.  Fortunately for Google though, most consumers aren’t aware of the threat that they are under. Although Microsoft had put out one of the first smart phone operating systems with CE it had to play catch up and finally came out with the Windows Phone.  They have gone for a market approach between those of iOS and Android.  They support multiple hardware vendors like Google, but they kept a certification process for applications that is similar to Apple.  They also created a user interface that was different enough to give it a clear separation from the other two platforms. The result of all this is hundreds of millions of smartphones being sold monthly across all three platforms giving us a wide range of choices and challenges when it comes to developing solutions. Features So what are the features that make these devices flexible enough be considered for use in the enterprise? The biggest advantage of today's devices is network connectivity.  The ability to access information from multiple sources at a moment’s notice is critical for businesses.  Add to that the ability to communicate over a variety of text, voice and video modes and we have a powerful starting point. Every smartphone has a cameras and they are not just useful for posting to Instagram. We are seeing more applications such as Bing vision that allow us to scan just about any printed code or text to find information.  These capabilities have been made available to developers in the form of standard libraries for reading barcodes of just about an flavor and optical character recognition (OCR) interpretation. Bluetooth give us the ability to communicate with multiple devices. Whether these are headsets, keyboard or printers the wireless communication capabilities are just starting to evolve.  The more these wireless communication protocols grow, the more opportunities we will see to transfer data between users and a variety of devices. Local storage of information that can be called up even when the device cannot reach the network is the other big capability.  This give users the ability to work offline as well and transmit information when connections are restored. These are the tools that we have to work with to build applications that can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage for companies that implement them.     I want to buy a new PC to be used as a media server that streams HD movies, music to any wireless device on my network (laptop, desktop, TV, etc.). I was wondering about the PC hardware's specifications that I need to have so that it can work just fine? (It will be wireless) Is there any tutorial showing how it could be done? And the security - how can I secure it? As well as I need it to to host my emails. I mean I have many emails. And sometimes I'm using desktop, sometimes laptop.. so is it possible to make the server store a copy of my emails, attachments, all sent items (whether they were from desktop or laptop)?

  • How do I install Ubuntu on an HP Touchsmart 600?

    I have a hp touchsmart 600 pc series. I tried to install the lastest version of ubuntu (12.04 LTS, 64bits) but it would not install. I popped in the cd and the menu asked for a reboot. Which I did. As ubuntu was about to install(purple background with 2 symbols underneth) the screen was dark and a prompt kept blinking for like over 10 minutes. So I turned off my pc and loaded my window os. I ran ubuntu again and used the help install feature. Needless to say the same thing happen again! does ubuntu work on hp touchsmart computers?

    I have been googeling and searching on how to do bridge my wifi connections to my internet connection using route. I have a ubuntu server 12.04 with a wifi and normal network card I also have a router that is connected to the internet on my ubuntu server i have eth0 connected to the router; IP 192.168.1.12 GW 192.168.1.1 DNS 212.54.40.25 this all works great I have set up my wlan0 as my accespoint, and DHCP to feed an IP to any device that connects to it. if i connect, for example, my android smartphone to my wlan0 acces point it will get the following IP 10.10.0.2 GW 10.10.0.1 DNS 212.54.40.25 How in earth can I bridge this connection and acces the internet from my android? I dont want to make use of BR0 bridge-utils but accomplish this using route. Many thanks in advance

  • How to handle "porting" software that's still in development

    My company is building an iOS version of an Android app that our client is developing (but has not yet released). We have access to the latest builds and source, however since the software is frequently re-structured and refactored, we're doing a lot of unnecessary re-work. In addition, the due date on the contract will likely be passed before the client's application is even ready for release. In other words, we're supposed to build the iOS version before the original Android version is even complete. Luckily the client tossed out the original deadline, but now we may have to renegotiate pricing... never a fun situation. Are we handling this incorrectly? How are "ports" (especially between mobile platforms) normally done? Is there a correct way to pipeline development for multiple platforms without so much re-work? Thanks in advance! :)

  • What can I change/investigate where the install does not complete?

    I have already successfully installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop and it works fine. I attempted to get my desktop PC to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu but found that neither the 32 or 64 bit install images will boot/install successfully. The startup script locks on 'initializing core #2' (or 1 or 3).. once I saw it say 'ok' at the end but it still locks there. I have tried to change the boot sequence by inserting 'debug' and 'acpi-off' into txt.cfg in both isolinux and syslinux folders but no changes were obvious during the boot.. as far as it got. The pc is built with an abit IP35 motherboard and nvidia 8600GT gfx card. Does anyone have any suggestion of what else I can change to get the install working?

I also used a SQLite database for my data.
