• Rails app complaining can't connect to memcached but I'm pretty sure it's running

- by centipedefarmer
All was well, then I rebooted the server. Right now: $ ps aux | grep memcache 1000 27168 0.0 0.0 121972 1056 pts/0 Sl 15:18 0:00 memcached -m 64 -p 11211 -u nobody -l 127.0.0.1 1000 27816 0.0 0.0 7628 956 pts/0 S+ 15:36 0:00 grep memcache meanwhile the rails app's log is getting tons of this: MemCacheError (No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:55 -0600 2011)): No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:55 -0600 2011) MemCacheError (No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:55 -0600 2011)): No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:55 -0600 2011) MemCacheError (No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:55 -0600 2011)): No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:55 -0600 2011) MemCacheError (No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:55 -0600 2011)): No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:55 -0600 2011) MemCacheError (No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:56 -0600 2011)): No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:56 -0600 2011) MemCacheError (No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:56 -0600 2011)): No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:56 -0600 2011) MemCacheError (No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:56 -0600 2011)): No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:56 -0600 2011) MemCacheError (No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:56 -0600 2011)): No connection to server (localhost:11211 DEAD (Timeout::Error: execution expired), will retry at Tue Feb 15 15:35:56 -0600 2011) Being that I'm more of a developer than a server guy, and being that we don't really have a "server guy," and this being in production... where do I start with this?

• How to check the information of current installed video drivers on Ubuntu?

- by smwikipedia
Hi guys, I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04. My CPU usage is high when I do trivial things such as scrolling through a PDF file. So I think my video driver is not properly installed. I want to confirm that by checking the information of my currently installed video driver, such as if there's a driver installed and what version it is. Then I could decide whether to install a new one if it is not up to date. On Windows, I could use the device manager, how to do that on Ubuntu Linux? I don't expect a GUI solution for this. Command line will be just good enough. Many thanks.

• Running psql in Linux Command Line

- by Mr Shoubs
I've just installed Postgres9 and it is up and running without any issues. There is one thing however that is confusing me: If I type /usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql test then postgres command line loads and I can use it as expected, however... If I cd /usr/local/pgsql/bin then type psql test I get the following error: The program 'psql' is currently not installed. To run 'psql' please ask your administrator to install the package 'postgresql-client-common' Does anyone know why? (please don't say install postgresql-client-common as this doesn't solve the problem)

• Ubuntu on a netbook. Wait for 12.10?

- by Kevin Duke
My friend has a really slow 2 yr old Toshiba netbook with 1GB of RAM. She is annoyed how slow Windows Starter runs on it so I suggested switching to Ubuntu. Since 12.10 is due in a few days, I'm not sure if we should wait before installing Ubuntu or if we should install it now in order to use Unity 2D. For a low-end device, should we use Unity 2D or use Unity 3D on 12.10 since Unity 2D is no longer present in 12.10? I understand Unity 3D has been greatly improved but is it faster than Unity 2D in the LTS version for a low-spec'd device?

• Linux DD command partition -to- partition

- by Ben Jackson
I just used the DD command to copy the contents of one partition over to another partition on another drive, like this: dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sdb2 bs=4096 conv=noerror sda2 partition was 66GB and sdb2 was 250GB. I read that by doing this the extra space on the drive I am copying to will be wasted, is this true? I wasn't worried about loosing the extra space for the time being however, I just ran: sudo kill -USR1 (PID) to view the current status of DD and it has written over 66GB of data, will it continue to write data until it gets to 250GB? If so, is there a way to stop the process without corrupting it as waiting for it to write blank space seems like a waste of time.

• sudo midnight commander

- by mit
I sometimes start midnight commander as superuser with the command sudo mc to do some operations on the current working directory as superuser. But this results in ~/.mc having the wrong permissions, which I need to fix manually. Any solution? Edit: I accepted an answer. I want to further add, that .mc is a directory, so my solution goes like this: $ cd ~ ~$ sudo chown -R mit.mit .mc ~$ chmod 775 .mc ~$ cd .mc ~$ chmod -R 664 .mc ~/.mc$ chmod 775 cedit It seems not to be a good idea after installing mc to use sudo on its first start .

• How do I enable greedy MigrationHeuristic in Karmic?

- by Matthew
My laptop performs very poorly for 2d graphics. For example, Docky's zoom effect and compiz effects are very choppy. In Jaunty, I was able to fix this by adding the following line under the "Device" section in my xorg.conf: Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy" In Karmic, there is no xorg.conf by default, so I copied my old one (from Jaunty). However, everything is still slow. Here is my xorg.conf: Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Configured Monitor" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" Device "Configured Video Device" EndSection From googling about, it sounds like "MigrationHeuristic" is only an option for the "EXA" mode, while Karmic has switched the intel driver to "UXA". So I tried adding this line under the "Device" section: Option "AccelMethod" "exa" But this didn't help.

• Install Adobe AIR on Ubuntu/Linux

Since quite some time Adobe Technologies released the Linux version of Adobe AIR to bring web applications and widgets to your desktop. Installing new applications on a Linux system is not always as easy as switching the computer on. The following instructions might be helpful to install Adobe AIR on any Linux system. First of all, get the latest installer of Adobe AIR from http://get.adobe.com/air/ - as of writing this article the file name is AdobeAIRInstaller.bin. Save the download in your preferred folder. Now, there are two ways to run the installer - visual style or console style. Visual Installation Launch your favorite or standard file manager like thunar or nautilus and browse to the folder where the AdobeAIRInstaller.bin has been saved. Right click on the file and choose 'Properties' in the context menu Set 'Execute' permissions and confirm modifications with OK Rename file into AdobeAIRInstaller Double click and follow the instructions Using the console Open a terminal like xterm Change into the directory where you stored the download Run this command:
chmod +x AdobeAIRInstaller.bin
Now run this command:
sudo ./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin
The normal installer will open, install it. From now whenever you download a .air file, just double click it and it will be installed. Troubleshooting In case that the installation does not start properly, try to install via console. This gives you more details about the reasons. Should you run into something like this:
AdobeAIRInstaller.bin: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected
Double check the execute permission of the installer file and try again.

• Active directory integration not working properly with winbind and samba

- by tubaguy50035
I'm trying to get my linux box to use active directory authentication. I believe I have almost everything setup correctly. I'm able to issue wbinfo -g and wbinfo -u and see all the groups and users respectively. Brief intro to my setup: The username I use on my linux box to do admin things is nick. My active directory username is nwalke. They have two different passwords. I am able to log in to the box with nick and that user's password and I'm also able to login as nwalke with nwalke's password. The curious bit: Upon creating the active directory user's home directory, I run a script that requires root access. This is to setup some system wide things like a samba share for them. When I log in as nwalke, I enter my nwalke password and it succeeds. I'm then greeted with [sudo] password for nick:. If I enter my nwalke password here, it says Sorry, try again.. If I enter nick's password, it says Sorry, user nick is not allowed to execute scriptname as root. If I do groups as nwalke, I see that magically my user has been given the group nick. Now, I accidentally thought that nick had a UID of 100, not 1000. So originally in my smb.conf I had idmap uid 1000-10000. The only thing I can think of, is that I logged in with nwalke while that was still set and now I'm just being presented with a UID of 1000 forcing linux to think I'm nick. I'm not really sure where to go from here. Like I said, I'm fairly certain active directory is communicating with my server properly, but something must not be mapped right on the linux side. Any thoughts? Here is my smb.conf: [global] security = ads netbios name = hostname realm = COMPANY.COM password server = adshost.company.com workgroup = COMPANY idmap uid = 10000-90000 idmap gid = 10000-90000 winbind separator = + winbind enum users = no winbind enum groups = no winbind use default domain = yes template homedir = /home/%D/%U template shell = /bin/bash client use spnego = yes domain master = no load printers = no printing = bsd printcap name = /dev/null disable spoolss = yes Let me know if more information about something is required.

• What is the kernel module "hid_microsoft"?

• Flushing iptables broke my pipe, how can I save my instance?

- by Niels
I was setting up my iptables when I performed a iptables -F and my ssh pipe broke. This is the last output of my session: root@alfapaints:~# iptables -L Chain INPUT (policy DROP) target prot opt source destination ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere state NEW,ESTABLISHED tcp dpt:2222 ACCEPT tcp -- li465-68.members.linode.com anywhere state NEW,ESTABLISHED tcp dpt:nrpe ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:9200 state NEW,ESTABLISHED ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:http state NEW,ESTABLISHED ACCEPT udp -- anywhere anywhere udp spt:domain Chain FORWARD (policy DROP) target prot opt source destination Chain OUTPUT (policy DROP) target prot opt source destination ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere state ESTABLISHED tcp spt:2222 ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere state ESTABLISHED tcp spt:nrpe ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp spt:9200 state ESTABLISHED ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp spt:http state ESTABLISHED ACCEPT udp -- anywhere anywhere udp dpt:domain root@alfapaints:~# iptables -F Write failed: Broken pipe I tested my connection just before and I was able to connect with ssh. Now I did a nmap scan and not a single port is open anymore. I know my VPS is running on VMWare ESXi, could a reboot help? Or if not could I attach and mount the disk to another vm to save the data? Does anybody have some advise? And maybe an explanation what happend or what could have cause my pipe to break? ps: I didn't save my rules on the config directories of iptables. But used a file I stored in ~/rules.config to apply my rules like this: iptables-restore < rules.config So probably a reboot would help? Thanks a lot in advance.

• MySQL Master-Master replication generating thousands of log files

- by Andrew
Today, I checked the /var/lib/mysql/ directory of a server in a master-master replication setup and noticed there were about 3,600 slave-relay.00xxxx files in there (where "xxxx" is an incrementing integer). They appear to be binary log files and don't take up much space (only about 42K), but are they an indication that something is wrong? They range in date from August until today with about 25 per day. Thanks for any help.

• How do I set a static DNS nameserver address on Ubuntu Server?

- by Aleks
I am trying statically to set DNS server addresses in my Ubuntu server running as virtual machine. I followed all recommendations on official Ubuntu support pages but I simply cannot get rid of my ISP's DNS servers set by DHCP. I assigned br0 interface on my host machine static IP address and eth0 on VM to use Google DNS and my own local DNS running on the second vm by setting it in /etc/network/interfaces. Tried to fiddle with head base and tail files in /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/ and tried to shuffle interface-order in /etc/resolvconf/interface-order but when I restarted network service I got the ISP's DNS addresses back every time. Is there a way that I can disable resolvconf and set up my resolv.conf file manually as I always did on Red Hat? Or at can you tell me which hook script keeps putting ISP DNSs in resolv.conf? My ISP don't allow me to change DHCP settings on my router so I cannot do it that way. Why is such a simple thing such as setting DNS servers got so complicated???

• Why should krfb use so much cpu when I never use it?

- by Newton Falls
I was playing around with KSysGuard and I noticed the process using the most cpu was krfb, which is the server process for desktop sharing. I never use desktop sharing so I suppose it is a default loaded process. Why would this process use so much juice (around 15%) when I never use it and it really shouldn't be doing much of anything? I don't see any network activity so I don't think I am being hacked. I have suspended the process and nothing bad seems to have happened. Can I assume this is a safe thing to do?

• Locate All Emacs Autosaves and Backups in one folder

- by Urda
What do I need to add to my .emacs to get it to save all of my autosaves and backups into one directory? I don't do a lot of .emacs configuration, and I just can't get the variables out of emacsWiki to play right. Anybody mind sharing how they do it? I would prefer to have the saves placed in /tmp/emacs/{username}/{autosaves | backups} BONUS, configuration to do the same for TRAMP

Any ideas what might be causing this?

• How can I prevent ubuntu from mounting particular partitions/deivices?

- by Patryk
I would like to stop Ubuntu from mounting my other (Windows') partitions automatically (since I do not need it really often - and especially I would like not to automount "System reserved" partition for Windows. There is a similar question here How can I stop Ubuntu 12.04 from mounting Fedora 16's Swap Partition? but! I do not have these partitions added in /etc/fstab. How can I do it ? For proof, my /etc/fstab proc /proc proc nodev, noexec, nosuid 0 0 # / was on /dev/sda7 during installation UUID=1384cee0-6a71-4b83-b0d3-1338db925168 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1 # swap was on /dev/sda6 during installation UUID=e3729117-b936-4c1d-9883-aee73dab6729 none swap sw 0 0 #------ MY WINDOWS D DRIVE---------- I WANT TO KEP IT UUID=98E8B14DE8B12A80 /media/d ntfs defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 0
