  I'm interested in learning more about design practices in PHP for Database Abstraction & Factory methods. For background, my site is a common-interest social networking community currently in beta mode. Currently, I've started moving my old code for object retrieval to factory methods. However, I do feel like I'm limiting myself by keeping a lot of SQL table names and structure separated in each function/method. Questions: Is there a reason to use PEAR (or similar) if I dont anticipate switching databases? Can PEAR interface with the MySqli prepared statements I currently use? Will it help me separate table names from each method? (If no, what other design patterns might I want to research?) Will it slow down my site once I have a significantly large member base?

• Select data from three different tables with null data

  I am new in Sql. My question is how to get data from three different tables with null values. I have tried a query as below: SELECT * FROM [USER] JOIN [Location] ON ([Location].UserId = [USER].Id) JOIN [ParentChild] ON ([ParentChild].UserId = [USER].Id) WHERE ParentId=7 which I find from this link. Its working fine but, it not fetches all and each data associated with the ParentId Something like it only fetches data which are available in all tables, but also omits some data which not available in Location tables but it comes under the given ParentId. For example: UserId ParentId 1 7 8 7 For userId 8, there is data available in Location table,so it fetches all data. But there is no data for userId 1 available in Location table, so the query didn't work for this. But I want all and every data. If there is no data for userId then it can return only null columns. Is it possible ?? hope everyone can understand my problem.

  I've seen other questions about this exception, but all of them seem to be resolved with the solution that a row with the primary key specified already exists. This doesn't seem to be the case for me. I have tried replacing all single quotes in my strings with double quotes, but the same problem occurs. • Getting "select permission denied" when using LINQ but my account is a sysadmin

  I have a console app that's geared to be automatically ran as a Scheduled Task. I use LINQ to SQL to pull some data out of the database, format it into a CSV and email it to a client. All of a sudden I am getting the error "SELECT permission denied for table", but the account I'm using to connect to the database (specified in my app.config file) has the "sysadmin" server role (bad programmer, I know; I'll get around to changing it to a better account later but I want to make sure it works first). I can connect directly to the SQL database using that very same account and query the table in question without a problem, it only seems to be when using the LINQ code. Any idea what would be causing this?

  I have an asp.net (vb) with 47 pages. The problem is that it's in 10 different languages, although 98% just use English. I have 5 master pages. I've read Google Webmaster Tools, but I'm still confounded. I'm reading about how microdata is the way to go. Does this mean I should put itemtype and itemprop span and div tags in my master pages, or should I do all of my 47 pages (.resx resource files) separately? The main key phrase I want throughout search results is "machine vision". For instance, the first couple sentences on my "about.aspx" page are: <span itemprop="name">USS Vision Inc.</span> (USS) is a privately-owned company with headquarters in <span itemprop="locality">Detroit, Michigan, USA</span>.   I am trying to do a vertical dropdown menu. This is my code .menu li:hover>ul{ position:absolute; display:inline; left:120px; top:100px;} I use position: Absolute to remove the sub-menu from the table, once the menu gets hovered. It appears that, if I do not indicate top or left property. The sub-menu will displayed relatively. Now I need to adjust the position relatively but seems that only the left property works. So my sub-menu left position is 120px relatively away from its original position. But the top is 100px away from the top of the window, rather then to the original position. How do I move the list up relative to it original position? I cant use position:relative because I need the sub-menu to be remove from the table.

  I'm trying to determine how to find/retrieve/load objects efficiently in terms of a.) minimizing calls to database and b.) keeping the code as elegant/simple as possible (i.e. not writing hql etc.). Assume you have two objects: public class Foo { Bar bar String badge } public class Bar { String name } Each Foo has a bar and a badge. Also assume that all badges are unique within a bar. So if a Foo has a badge "4565" there are no other Foos that have the same badge # AND the same bar. If I have a bar ID, how can I efficiently retrive the Foo w/o first selecting Bar? I know I can do this: Foo.findByBadgeAndBar("4565", Bar.findById("1")) But that seems to cause a select on the Bar table followed by a select on the Foo table. In other words, I need to produce the Grails/Hibernate/GORM equivalent of the following: select * from foo where badge="4565" and bar_id="1"

  We've got a MySQL table in which rows are never updated, but instead new rows are added and the old ones marked obsolete. Think Rails' acts_as_paranoid, but for every update. To make working with Rails sane, we've got a view which selects only the rows which are "current". That makes a much better "table" for our ActiveRecord model. The snag: our indexes aren't being used anymore. Queries on the view don't use the underlying tables' indexes. You can't add an index to a view. Without indexes, the app is unbearably slow. The only solution we've come up with is to build a materialized view, but that's a pain in MySQL because they're not natively supported. Is there a better way to do this?

The query for the report grabs all of the values the user selected and stores them in a single variable.   I have a table with ~800k rows. I ran an update users set hash = SHA1(CONCAT({about eight fields})) where 1; Now I have a hung Sequel Pro process and I'm not sure about the mysqld process. This is two questions: What harm can possibly come from killing these programs? I'm working on a separate database, so no damage should come to other databases on the system, right? Assume you had to update a table like this. What would be a quicker / more reliable method of updating without writing a separate script. I just checked with phpMyAdmin and it appears as though the query is complete. I still have Sequel Pro using 100% of both my cores though...

• jquery iterating through newly created elements

  Hi All, I am trying to add new rows in my table, and save them into DB. First, I use .append() to append rows on the table: $("#tablename").append("<tr id='newRow'><td>newly added row</td></tr>"); The appending function works fine. My page displays the correct result. However, I am unable to select them with $("#newRow").each(function () { alert "it never reaches here!"; }); I am guessing it is because the elements are added after the DOM is loaded. Can anyone please tell me how I can iterate through all my newly added elements? Thank you.

• Ruby on Rails: Unit Testing non activerecord models and still load fixtures

  I may be missing something but I am stuck in this scenario: I have a non activerecord model, which I want to test. I have derived its test case class from: Test::Unit::TestCase. However, the test case class for the model, uses within itself, other activerecord model classes and I want to load fixtures for them. My problem is that the fixtures class method is available only when I subclass the test case class from ActiveSupport::TestCase (it is defined within ActiveRecord::TestFixtures which gets included in ActiveSupport::TestCase). Any help, coz running the tests gives me the error: undefined method "fixtures" (which is understandable) and in case I derive my test case class from ActiveSupport::TestCase it complains that there is no corresponding DB table. Also, I don't want to create a dummy table for backing my model class. Thanks a ton!

  I am trying to construct a navigation menu using a Categories table from my db. • SQl Server: serializable level not working

  I have the following SP: CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_LockReader] AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON; begin try set transaction isolation level serializable begin tran select * from teste commit tran end try begin catch rollback tran set transaction isolation level READ COMMITTED end catch set transaction isolation level READ COMMITTED END The table "test" has many values, so "select * from teste" takes several seconds. I run the sp_LockReader at same time in two diferent query windows and the second one starts showing test table contents without the first one terminates. Shouldn't serializeble level forces the second query to wait? How do i get the described behaviour? Thanks

• Best way to mask 2D sprites in XNA?

  I currently am trying to mask some sprites. Rather than explaining it in words, I've made up some example pictures: The area to mask (in white) Now, the red sprite that needs to be cropped. The final result. Now, I'm aware that in XNA you can do two things to accomplish this: Use the Stencil Buffer. Use a Pixel Shader. I have tried to do a pixel shader, which essentially did this: float4 main(float2 texCoord : TEXCOORD0) : COLOR0 { float4 tex = tex2D(BaseTexture, texCoord); float4 bitMask = tex2D(MaskTexture, texCoord); if (bitMask.a > 0) { return float4(tex.r, tex.g, tex.b, tex.a); } else { return float4(0, 0, 0, 0); } } This seems to crop the images (albeit, not correct once the image starts to move), but my problem is that the images are constantly moving (they aren't static), so this cropping needs to be dynamic. Is there a way I could alter the shader code to take into account it's position? Alternatively, I've read about using the Stencil Buffer, but most of the samples seem to hinge on using a rendertarget, which I really don't want to do. (I'm already using 3 or 4 for the rest of the game, and adding another one on top of it seems overkill) The only tutorial I've found that doesn't use Rendertargets is one from Shawn Hargreaves' blog over here. The issue with that one, though is that it's for XNA 3.1, and doesn't seem to translate well to XNA 4.0. It seems to me that the pixel shader is the way to go, but I'm unsure of how to get the positioning correct. I believe I would have to change my onscreen coordinates (something like 500, 500) to be between 0 and 1 for the shader coordinates. My only problem is trying to work out how to correctly use the transformed coordinates. Thanks in advance for any help!

• Storing unique ID in UITableViewCell

  I have a table where there will often be two cells with the same title. I'm zooming in on a map whenever a cell in the table is clicked, so using the title as a unique identifier is out of the question. I already have a unique identifier, but I need to find a way to store it in a UITableViewCell object. I have been considering two options, both of which are poor, IMO. 1) store the unique ID as the text inside the text of the detailTextLabel property. 2) build a custom UITableViewCell class. I'm new to objective C, and I would essentially like to know if theres a third option that isnt as inefficient as #1, but not as involved as #2. Thanks
