• Monitor-Specific Color Profile Results In Yellow Grayscale Images

  I recently purchased a new Acer S201hl monitor. Many lay reviews compliment its color accuracy with people noting only a bit of a blueish tinge. After a little time, Windows found, and I installed, the Acer drivers via Microsoft Update. During the installation process, the software installed an ICC profile for the monitor from Acer. I recently noticed that when I view photos using Windows Live Photo Gallery, the colors are wrong. For example, grayscale document scans appear with yellow backgrounds instead of white backgrounds. This happens with both my external monitors and my ThinkPad's built-in screen. When I removed the monitor-specific profile from the list of profiles associated with a monitor (for example, removing the Acer profile from the Acer monitor), the problem went away for that screen. I checked with Microsoft KB939395 and though it says "an incorrect color profile [...] is used for the monitor," the profile associated with my ThinkPad's screen seemed to be correct, based on its name.

• Present a form to user on Windows login

  I have a public computer lab where users must give a few short details about themselves such as their age and objective before they use the computers. Currently this information is gathered by a lab attendant on paper. I would like for the user to be given a form in Windows at the beginning of his or her session on a computer in the lab. It should be impossible to use the computer without filling out and submitting this form. I am confident in my abilities as a web application developer and I would prefer to collect the data in some sort of browser-based form. How do I present it to the user and lock them out of Windows until it has been submitted?

• 11gr2 DataGuard: Restarting DUPLICATE After a Failure

  One of the great new features that comes in very handy when databases get larger and larger these days is RMAN's capability to duplicate from an active database and even restart a duplicate when it fails. Imagine yourself the problem I had lately; I used the duplicate from active database feature and had to wait for an hour or 6 before all datafiles where transferred.At the end of the process some error occurred because of the syntax. While this error was easily to solve I was afraid I had to redo the complete procedure and transfer the 2.5 TB again. Well, 11gr2 RMAN surprised when I re-ran my command with the following output: Using previous duplicated file +DATA/fin2prod/datafile/users.2968.719237649 for datafile 12 with checkpoint SCN of 183289288148 Using previous duplicated file +DATA/fin2prod/datafile/users.2703.719237975 for datafile 13 with checkpoint SCN of 183289295823 Above I only show a small snippet, but what happend is that RMAN smartly skipped all files that where already transferred ! The documentation says this: RMAN automatically optimizes a DUPLICATE command that is a repeat of a previously failed DUPLICATE command. The repeat DUPLICATE command notices which datafiles were successfully copied earlier and does not copy them again. This applies to all forms of duplication, whether they are backup-based (with and without a target connection) or active database duplication. The automatic optimization of the DUPLICATE command can be especially useful when a failure occurs during the duplication of very large databases. If a DUPLICATE operation fails, you need only run the DUPLICATE again, using the same parameters contained in the original DUPLICATE command. Please see chapter 23 of the 11g Release 2 Database Backup and Recovery User's Guide for more details. B.w.t. be very careful with the duplicate command. • Apache not running from rc.d on FreeBSD

  I'm using FreeBSD 8.3 and Apache 2.2. I didn't install Apache from ports, instead compiled it from source because I wanted to move the binary and configuration to a different path (I'm centering all of the major production daemons and their configurations in a single place). In any case, I based the /usr/local/etc/rc.d/apache22 file on one from a different server where it was installed from ports, I only modified the binary and config paths within. I can manually execute it with /usr/local/etc/rc.d/apache22 start, however even with apache22_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf it fails to start. All permissions and ownership are identical to the other server where it works. What am I missing and is there a way to debug this kind of thing?

• How to setup a host as a sendmail relay for particular IP subnet

  Hi, By default, sendmail (I have version 8.13 on an RHEL4) allows only local mails. I wanted to allow mails from a particular network to be relayed via the system, so I did the following based on suggestions from various places : /etc/mail/access : Added the subnet and the domain 8.37 RELAY mydomain.com RELAY (I assume this is the originating email's domain) This alone did not work, so I added the following to sendmail.mc FEATURE(access_db)dbl Now, the problem is that it is allowing access from other domains as well. To test it out, I removed 8.37 RELAY from the access, and changed the email from field to [email protected] However, I still receive the mail. What is the correct way to configure this, so that only mails from a particular subnet are relayed ?

• More than 3 seconds "Initial Connection" time (webpagetest.org)

  I'm having a weird issue with a vBulletin forum, on a 2? Xeon E5645 w/ 16GB RAM, cPanel and LiteSpeed webserver; It takes too long to start loading... When I tested it with webpagetest.org I saw that for every request there's a 3 second "Initial connection" delay, which I don't know why is happening. Here's a screenshot: CPU Load is between 0.03 and 0.05, I've got several GB of free RAM, practical no I/O activity, and this delay can occur even with only one visitor on the forum. Where do you suggest I start searching? What could be the reason for this kind of delay? I don't think it's the webserver, or the forum because there's another website on the server (total 2 sites) which is WordPress based, and has exactly the same issue with the 3 second initial connection delay. I believe it's OS related, but need a clue on where to start looking. Thanks in advance :)

• Gradually migrate from one SMTP server to another

  I maintain an application that sends out a ton of e-mail on a daily basis. Soon, we will have to migrate to another SMTP-server for that, which has an ip address that has no reputation with respect to email delivery. So instead of just flipping the switch, I would like to start by sending a small percentage of all mail through the new server, and then gradually increase that percentage until we reach 100%. It wouldn't be very hard to implement something in the application itself, but I would like to know if there is an easier, more reliable out-of-the-box-type solution for this. My first thought was to use round-robin DNS for this, but the servers require different credentials, use different protocols (one uses SASL, the other doesn't) and even different port numbers, so I think that rules out the DNS based solution. Is there any way, for example, to configure Postfix to send 1 out of x e-mails to relay host A and the rest to relay host B? Or perhaps a different MTA?

  I have a site that will need to store file uploads by the user once logged in. Currently I have a folder with permissions opened up, (777), because that was the only way I could get mkdir() to work. When the user uploads a file, the application creates several directories based on the user, in this directory then eventually stores the file. Couple of questions: How do I setup the permissions on each of these folders and sub folders so that only logged in users to my site have access to them? Is this even possible? Is there a more secure way of storing .pdf, word docs, and text files?

• How to convince boss to buy Visual Studio 2012 Professional

  The main advantage is the use of ReSharper and other add-ons but we need to make a convincing argument for the purchase of Visual Studio 2012 Professional. We are currently using Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows. It is quite good but is hard to switch from using the full Professional version in the past. So far the team has compiled the following list: Extract Interface function missing. Very useful for clean SOLID code. No add-on support. Can’t install StyleCop or productivity tools. AnkhSvn, Spell checker, Productivity PowerTools, GhostDoc, Regex Editor, PowerCommands. The exception assistant is limited in Express edition. This is a big annoyance. Possibility of create a Test project based on source code. We do server development in C# so any web add-ons or anything else is useless. • What kind of DNS and IIS configuration is needed to allow multiple domains to point to a multi-tenant web application?

  I'm developping a multi-tenant web application in ASP.NET MVC and it will provide my users the ability to have a custom subdomain pointing to their account page (like user.myapp.com). I already have it working by using a wildcard DNS entry and a code to query the database to load the user data based on the domain. I'm planning to offer the possibility of using custom domains, allowing the users to buy their own domains and use it instead of the subdomains that will be provided by default. I currently use DNSMadeEasy to host the DNS for the application main domain. I just don't know what kind of settings I must make to allow this feature to work, since the users will have domains hosted in several companies. Will I have to create my own nameservers and provide it to my users? What other things I must consider to implement it efficiently?

• Prevent Outlook from automatically deleting meeting emails

  I'm using Outlook Web Access to read my email. When I receive a meeting notice and acknowledge it, Outlook adds it to my calendar then deletes the email. Is there a way to disable Outlook automatically deleting the meeting email? There doesn't seem to be any way to configure this in Options - Messaging and Options - Calendar. Note that I'm using Outlook Web Access and not the desktop client. From the copyright date this appears to be Outlook 2007. Follow-up: Based on edusysadmin's comment I logged-in using IE8, which exposed a setting not available in Firefox - "Move out-of-date meeting requests and responses to the Deleted Items folder". However unchecking this box doesn't seem to impact the auto-delete behavior. Follow-up 2: Keep in mind I am using Outlook Web Access via a web browser. I do not have the thick client Outlook installed.

• Troubleshooting inconsistent ODBC connectivity

  I'm attempting to integrate UPS WorldShip with a SQL Server 2008 R2 database but the connection is very inconsistent. UPS claims this is a DSN/Windows problem and I have not been able to convince them otherwise. The integration is quite simple: my shipping guy clicks a button which opens a form where he enters an order #. After pressing enter the shipping information will be pulled from the database for that order #. The problem is that WorldShip often times thinks the DSN does not exist. However, I am able to open WorldShip's customization tool and browse all the tables and fields in the database my DSN is connected to which means at the very least my DSN does, in fact, exist. The reason this has been so difficult to troubleshoot is because there is no consistency to the problem and I'm not able to reliably repeat any behavior. That is to say that rebooting the PC doesn't cause the connection to break and opening the integration tool and viewing the tables and fields doesn't cause the integration button to work. Is there some way for me to monitor this connection from the SQL server or get any clues as to why it fails? As requested by TallTed here is a sample of the trace file I created. After a mere 5 hours the trace file was over 130MB so there's no way I could provide it in its entirety. • Apache httpd.conf handle multiple domains to run the same application

  So what we are looking for is the ability to do the following: We have an application that can load certain settings based on the domain that it is being accessed from. So if you come from xyz.com we show a different logo and if you come from abc.com we show a different logo. The code is the same, running from same server just detects the domain on the run Now we want to get a dedicated server (any suggestions?) that will enable us to point all the doamins that we want to this server (we change the DNS for the domains to that of our server) and then when the user goes to a certain domain they run the same application. Now as far as I can understand we will need to create a "VirtualHost" in apache to handle this. Can we create a wildcard virtualhost that catches all the domains? I am not an expert with Apache at all. So please forgive if this comes out to be a silly question. Any detailed help would be great. Thanks

• What language should I use for making a cross platform library?

  I want to build a SyncML parsing library (no UI) which should be able to build up messages based on information provided by the host application, fed in by the library's methods. Also, the library should to be able to do callbacks to methods in the host application. I want to be able to compile this and have it available on as many platforms as possible: Windows, Windows Phone 7 OS, OSX, iOS, Linux, Android, BlackBerry. Basically as many platforms as possible. The priority is to have this available on mobile devices. Questions: What setup should I use? (programming languages, compilers, IDE etc.) How would I compile this library for these different platforms and how would I connect to it? Any other info? e.g. articles that cover the subject of cross-platform development? I haven't done this sort of a cross-platform project before, so any available information to put me in the right direction would be welcomed. Myself, I have a background in C#/.NET and Objective-C.

• Progress 4GL and DB to Oracle and cloud

  Getting from client/server based 4GLs and databases where the 4GL is tightly linked to the database to Oracle and the cloud is not easy. The least risky and expensive option (in the short term) is to use the Progress OpenEdge DataServer for Oracle: Progress OpenEdge DataServer This eliminates the need to have to migrate the Progress 4GL to Java/J2EE. The database can be migrated using SQLWays Ispirer: Ispirer SQLWays ProgressDB migrations tool The Progress 4GL can remain as is. In order to get the application on the cloud there are a few approaches: 1. VDI - Virtual Desktop is a way to put all of the users desktop in a centralized environment off the desktop. This is great in cases where it is just not one client/server application that the user needs access too. In many cases, users will utilize MS Access, MS Excel, Crystal Reports and other tools to get at the Progress DB and other centralized databases. Vmware's acquistion of Wanova shows how VDI is growing in usage. Citrix is the 800 pound gorilla in the VDI space with Citrix WinFrame (now called XenDesktop). Oracle offers a VDI solution that Oracle picked up when it acquired Sun. 2. Hypervisor Server Virtualization - Of course you can place applications written in client/server languages like Progress 4GL buy using server virtualization from Oracle, VMWare, Microsoft, Citrix and others. 3. Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (aka: Terminal Services Client) The entire idea is to eliminate all the client/server desktop devices and connections which require desktop software and database drivers. • GRUB2 prompt instead of BURG boot screen after mistake during BURG installation

  I just installed BURG, but during the installation I made a mistake: after the package was installed, I got to some command-line based GUI for configuration, where I forgot to mark my (only) hard disk as the boot device before I hit OK. I tried to reinstall (apt-get purge burg && apt-get autoremove followed by apt-get install burg) but I wasn't able to get to the same screen again (I didn't find the GUI). When I now start my computer, I am taken to a GRUB2 prompt and no BURG (or GRUB2) boot menu is shown. Since I don't know any GRUB commands and I am helpless. How do I reinstall GRUB/BURG correctly? Update: I rebooted my computer, and got a BURG prompt (which appears to be the same thing as a GRUB prompt, but if there's a difference I wouldn't know it...).
