• Copied Netbeans IDE Maven Web project failes to compile

  If I am going to make serious changes to my project I like to make a copy (right click project and select copy). I have created copies of my projects many times (maven web applications included) without issue. Now all I do is copy the project making no changes, leaving the copy settings on default (project name etc) and then try to run it and spring decides to take issue with it. Again I try running the original and it works. I deleted the faulty copy, restarted and tried again and still it does not work. Here are my maven/system details: Apache Maven 2.2.1 (rdebian-4) Java version: 1.6.0_20 Java home: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre Default locale: en_CA, platform encoding: UTF-8 OS name: "linux" • C# UserControl Validation

  Hi, I have a UserControl with a Tab Control containing three tabs. Within the tabs are multiple controls - Datetimepickers, textboxes, comboboxes. There is also a Save button which when clicked, calls this.ValidateChildren(ValidationConstraints.Enabled) Now, I click save and a geniune validation error occurs. I correct the error and then click save again - valdiation errors occur on comboboxes on a different tab. If I navigate to this tab and click save, everything works fine. How can this be? I haven't changed any values in the comboboxes so how can the fail validation then pass validation? The comboboxes are bound to a dataset with their selectedValue and Text set. I just don't understand what is happening here. This behaviour also occurs for some textboxes too. The validation rule is that they have to be a decimal - the default value is zero, which is allowed. The same thing happens, they fail validation the first time - I make no changes, click save again and they pass validation. If you need any further information please let me know thanks Barry

• What's the expectation for silverlight 2's lifespan?

  Way back when I built an internal site for a customer using silverlight 2. They've been happy with it and I've barely had to touch it. Is the expectation that this site will always work? What I'm afraid of is suddenly getting a call years from now that the users installed silverlight X and now it's broken and I'm going to have to convert it immediately past Y versions of Silverlight to get the site back up, and I don't even do Silverlight anymore. I already went through this once when it went from 2 beta to 2 release and and scrambling to fix all the breaking changes and get the site back up. It wasn't as big a deal then as we were in beta anyway. I could upgrade now but it would be really tough to go back to the customer and ask for money to do an upgrade when they are happy now and will see no noticeable benefit from staying current. Additionally there are some third party controls that would have to be licensed again. So I guess what I'm asking is there a known end of life? Or do we just play it by ear?

• Date since 1600 to NSDate?

  I have a date that's stored as a number of days since January 1, 1600 that I need to deal with. This is a legacy date format that I need to read many, many times in my application. The problem is I'm getting a different time for rootDate on iOS vs. Mac OS X. On Mac OS X, I'm getting midnight. On iOS, I'm getting 8:12:28. (So far, it seems to be consistent about this.) When I add my number of days later, the weird time stays. If I set them to something other than 0, it adds them to 8:12:28. I've been wondering if this has something to do with leap seconds or other cumulative clock changes. Or is this entirely the wrong approach to use on iOS?

• Preventing iframe caching in browser

  How do you prevent Firefox and Safari from caching iframe content? I have a simple webpage with an iframe to a page on a different site. Both the outer page and the inner page have HTTP response headers to prevent caching. When I click the "back" button in the browser, the outer page works properly, but no matter what, the browser always retrieves a cache of the iframed page. IE works just fine, but Firefox and Safari are giving me trouble. My webpage looks something like this: <html> <head><!-- stuff --></head> <body> <!-- stuff --> <iframe src="webpage2.html?var=xxx" /> <!-- stuff --> </body> </html> The var variable always changes. Despite the fact that the URL of the iframe has changed (and thus, the browser should be making a new request to that page), the browser just fetches the cached content. I've examined the HTTP requests and responses going back and forth, and I noticed that even if the outer page contains <iframe src="webpage2.html?var=222" />, the browser will still fetch webpage2.html?var=111. Here's what I've tried so far: Changing iframe URL with random var value Adding Expires, Cache-Control, and Pragma headers to outer webpage Adding Expires, Cache-Control, and Pragma headers to inner webpage I'm unable to do any JavaScript tricks because I'm blocked by the same-origin policy. I'm running out of ideas. Does anyone know how to stop the browser from caching the iframed content?

• Changing App.config at Runtime

  I'm writing a test winforms / C# / .NET 3.5 application for the system we're developing and we fell in the need to switch between .config files at runtime, but this is turning out to be a nightmare. Here's the scene: the Winforms application is aimed at testing a WebApp, divided into 5 subsystems. The test proccess works with messages being sent between the subsystems, and for this proccess to be sucessful each subsystem got to have its own .config file. For my Test Application I wrote 5 separate configuration files. I wish I was able to switch between these 5 files during runtime, but the problem is: I can programatically edit the application .config file inumerous times, but these changes will only take effect once. I've been searching a long time for a form to address this problem but I still wasn't sucessful. I know the problem definition may be a bit confusing but I would really appreciate it if someone helped me. Thanks in advance! --- UPDATE 01-06-10 --- There's something I didn't mention before. Originally, our system is a Web Application with WCF calls between each subsystem. For performance testing reasons (we're using ANTS 4), we had to create a local copy of the assemblies and reference them from the test project. • How do I manage application configuration in ASP.NET?

  I am having difficulty with managing configuration of an ASP.Net application to deploy for different clients. The sheer volume of different settings which need twiddling takes up large amounts of time, and the current configuration methods are too complicated to enable us to push this responsibility out to support partners. Any suggestions for better methods to handle this or good sources of information to research? How we do things at present: Various xml configuration files which are referenced in Web.Config, for example an AppSettings.xml. Configurations for specific sites are kept in duplicate configuration files. Text files containing lists of data specific to the site In some cases, manual one-off changes to the database C# configuration for Windsor IOC. The specific issues we are having: Different sites with different features enabled, different external services we have to talk to and different business rules. Different deployment types (live, test, training) Configuration keys change across versions (get added, remove), meaning we have to update all the duplicate files We still need to be able to alter keys while the application is running Our current thoughts on how we might approach this are: Move the configuration into dynamically compiled code (possibly Boo, Binsor or JavaScript) Have some form of diffing/merging configuration: combine a default config with a live/test/training config and a site-specific config

• Need to kill a session?

  Really quick here... I think I have the answer, but just looking for some validation. I have a site with two "points of entry." One is for a standard user and one is for an admin account. In the real world, an admin could have a standard user account and try to login as an admin while already being under the standard user session. I have two separate front ends to facilitate login. The normal user one is frilly and has ads and the like, the admin one is strictly business, so any suggestion to have the two user types login through the same "door" is not on the table. Would you advise on the admin login page to destroy any active sessions? Once the admin is in, they'll only be tooling around in their admin area and not on the main site. Has anyone run into probs using this method and having an admin-type user try to log back in in a new window as a "user" to view changes from a logged in user's prespective? Thanks in advance. • Eclipse / Aptana File Sync Solutions

  Our development team uses Eclipse + Aptana to do their web development work. Currently, most of them are mapping their Eclipse projects directly to the web server. I'd rather them create a local project and use that to sync to the web server project directory they are working on. The issue is that there aren't any good solutions which is just appalling given the popularity of the two. The FileSync plugin for Eclipse is only one-way. Meaning if another developer makes a change to the file on the server, another dev isn't even notified and could overwrite the change. The File Transfer option in Aptana 2.0 doesn't support any sort of Sync, just manually uploading/downloading files. The Sync option in Aptana 1.5.1 doesn't allow you to merge files when they are different. You can only update one or the other. It does however allow you to view a diff (but only if you right click and select) and in that diff you can't make any changes. I did find a way to allow files to be uploaded to their Sync repositories in Aptana using Eclipse Monkey. However it doesn't work if a user saves multiple files at once, 'Save All', again it doesn't work. And additionally, there is no notification if a user opens a local file that has an updated copy on the server. I tried to add one using Eclipse Monkey but I couldn't find any sort of listener in the Eclipse API to do it and any Eclipse Monkey documentation is far and few between. My only solution at this point is just to let them continue to map directly to the server or ask them to do a manual download before they do any work (but again what if someone uploads a change right after they do that). Anyone have any ideas?

• Accessing a com object's vtable in c#

  I'm attempting to access a com object's vtable in memory and getting nowhere. From what I have read, the first 4 bytes in memory of a com object should be a pointer to the vtableptr, which in turn is a pointer to the vtable. Although I'm not sure I expect to find my test method at slot 7 in this com object I have tried them all and nothing looks like the address of my function. If anyone can make the necessary changes to this sample to get it to work (the aim is just to try and invoke the Test method on the Tester class by accessing the com object's vtable and locating the method in whichever row it turns up) I would be very grateful.   Does anyone know if this subversion "bug" has been dealt with? https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/subversion/tags/1.6.9/www/faq.html#windows-access-denied I'm getting occasional "Access Denied" errors on Windows. They seem to happen at random. Why? These appear to be due to the various Windows services that monitor the filesystem for changes (anti-virus software, indexing services, the COM+ Event Notification Service). This is not really a bug in Subversion, which makes it difficult for us to fix. A summary of the current state of the investigation is available here. A workaround that should reduce the incidence rate for most people was implemented in revision 7598; if you have an earlier version, please update to the latest release. Currently I am experiencing this same behavior in version 1.5.6 when I try and do a SVN switch (I have suspected McAfee as the culprit for a while and when I saw this I feel it validates my suspicions). I read through the link given but it seems pretty old, so I didn't know if this FAQ was just outdated and the issue has actually be resolved. Thanks for any help. • Visual studio not detecting that exe is out of date after perforce revert

  This is a bit of an odd situation. Here's what's happening. So, we have a VS2008 project which outputs to a number of files under perforce control. These files have the always writable flag set. I compile the project in VS, which gives me up to date binaries on my machine. If I then revert those binaries via perforce, I have the version of the binaries that were up on perforce (ie, old ones.) Despite this, compiling the project again at this point detects no changes and will not remake those binaries. In a way, this makes sense, since none of the code or obj files have changed, but it's not really what I want to happen. This comes up in an edge case on our automated build server. I can think of tons of different little hacks I could do to fix this, but I'm thinking I could be missing something fundamental here. The actual build process uses the Unreal build tool, so there is a bit of magic going on behind the scenes that I'm not entirely familiar with too. Edit: This is a C/C++ project, forgot to mention that.

• Help matching fields between two classes

  I'm not too experienced with Java yet, and I'm hoping someone can steer me in the right direction because right now I feel like I'm just beating my head against a wall... The first class is called MeasuredParams, and it's got 40+ numeric fields (height, weight, waistSize, wristSize - some int, but mostly double). The second class is a statistical classifier called Classifier. It's been trained on a subset of the MeasuredParams fields. The names of the fields that the Classifier has been trained on is stored, in order, in an array called reqdFields. What I need to do is load a new array, toClassify, with the values stored in the fields from MeasuredParams that match the field list (including order) found in reqdFields. I can make any changes necessary to the MeasuredParams class, but I'm stuck with Classifier as it is. My brute-force approach was to get rid of the fields in MeasuredParams and use an arrayList instead, and store the field names in an Enum object to act as an index pointer. Then loop through the reqdFields list, one element at a time, and find the matching name in the Enum object to find the correct position in the arrayList. Load the value stored at that positon into toClassify, and then continue on to the next element in reqdFields. I'm not sure how exactly I would search through the Enum object - it would be a lot easier if the field names were stored in a second arrayList. But then the index positions between the two would have to stay matched, and I'm back to using an Enum. I think. I've been running around in circles all afternoon, and I keep thinking there must be an easier way of doing it. I'm just stuck right now and can't see past what I've started. • Can GWT image sprites using ImageBundle be made to work in IE7 and IE6?

  I'm trying to use a ClientBundle in my GWT application to make multiple images get sent as a single file. I declare the bundle like so: public interface MyResources extends ClientBundle { public static final MyResources INSTANCE = GWT.create(MyResources.class); @Source("icon1.png") ImageResource icon1(); @Source("icon2.png") ImageResource icon2(); } This works great in Firefox and IE8, but in IE7 (and earlier) the whole sprite shows up in place of one of my original images - that is, icon1 is next to icon2 next to icon3, and so on. In IE8's developer tools using IE8-as-IE7 mode or Compatibility View, I can see that it's showing an image with a file name like 26BEFD2399A92A5DDA54277BA550C75B.cache.png, which is what I'd expect. So is there any way to make GWT image sprites work in IE7 and lower? If not, is there any way to gracefully degrade so users of other browsers get the speedup of spriting and IE7 and IE6 users get something that looks right but is slower? Edit: The Client Bundle Developer's Guide has a discussion of using ClientBundle and @sprite, and says "Support for IE6 isn't feasible in this format, because structural changes to the DOM are necessary to implement a "windowing" effect. Once it's possible to distinguish ie6 and ie7 in user.agent, we could revisit support for ie6. In the current implementation, the ie6 code won't render correctly, although is a purely cosmetic issue." Is this what's going on in my case, and is there a way to work around it? Showing all the images is "purely a cosmetic issue", but it's a pretty severe one.

• How to know when StatusBar size changed (iPhone)

  I have UITabBarController with 2 tabs. One resizes just fine, when StatusBar size changes (emulator "Toggle In-Call Status Bar" menu item). The other one doesn't. The problematic tab item contains a static view, which dynamically loads one or another view depending on certain things. While getting this setup working I discovered that main tab view did NOT automagically send e.g. viewWillAppear and viewWillDisappear messages to my dynamic subviews. • What is the fastest way to pull a few element values out of XML files in Perl?

  I have a bunch of XML files that are about 1-2 megabytes in size. Actually, more than a bunch, there are millions. They're all well-formed and many are even validated against their schema (confirmed with libxml2). All were created by the same app, so they're in a consistent format (though this could theoretically change in the future). I want to check the values of one element in each file from within a Perl script. Speed is important (I'd like to take less than a second per file) and as noted I already know the files are well-formed. I am sorely tempted to simply 'open' the files in Perl and scan through until I see the element I am looking for, grab the value (which is near the start of the file), and close the file. On the other hand, I could use an XML parser (which might protect me from future changes to the XML formatting) but I suspect it will be slower than I'd like. Can anyone recommend an appropriate approach and/or parser? Thanks in advance.

• WPF RibbonTextBox Width problem

  Hey guys, It seems to me that the Ribbon control has a problem with textboxes. I was expecting a common TextBox control behaviour: a fixed width and a visible caret when the text exceeds the width. But the RibbonTextBox control changes its width and when the text exceeds the right limit, the overflow is not visible. • Javascript: Controlling the order that event handlers / listeners are exeucted in

  Once again the IE Monster has hit me with an odd problem. I'm writing some changes into an asp.net site I inherited a while back. One of the problems is that in some pages there are several controls that add javascript functions as handlers to the onload event (using YUI if that matters). Some of those event handlers assume certain other functions have been executed. This is well and good in Firefox and IE7 as the handlers seem to execute in order of registration. IE8 on the other hand does this backwards. I could go with some kind of double-checking approach but given the controls are present in several pages I feel that'd create even more dependencies. So I've started cooking up my own queue class that I push the functions to and can control their execution order. Then I'll register an onload handler that instructs the queue to execute in my preferred order. I'm part way through that and have started wondering 2 things: Am I going OTT? Am I reinventing the wheel? Anyone have any insights? Any clean solutions that allow me to easily enforce execution order?

• Problem retrieving multiple instances of the same asp.net session variable

  I'm having problems with retrieving multiple instances of a session variable from an InProc session state. In the following code I persist a simple BusinessObject into a session variable on the Page_Load event. On the click of a button I try to retrieve the object back into 2 new declared instances of the same BusinessObject. All works great until I change one of the properties in the first instance, it changes the second instance as well. Is this normal behaviour? I would have thought as these were new instances they wouldn’t demonstrate static behaviour? Any ideas where I'm going wrong? • Sysdeo Tomcat DevLoader - Hot deploy of java class causes whole application to restart

  Hi, I am using sysdeo tomcat plugin 3.2.1 with eclipse 3.5.1 (Galileo) and tomcat 5.5.23 on windows XP. I can get tomcat plugin working in eclipse, and have extracted devloader.zip into [tomcat]\server\classes. I have also updated the context and now it has this entry: <Context path="/myapp1" reloadable="true" docBase="F:\Work\eclipse_workspace\myapp1" workDir="F:\Work\eclipse_workspace\myapp1\work" > <Logger className="org.apache.catalina.logger.SystemOutLogger" verbosity="4" timestamp="true"/> <Loader className="org.apache.catalina.loader.DevLoader" reloadable="true" debug="1" useSystemClassLoaderAsParent="false" /> </Context> I have activated devloader (in Project Properties Tomcat Devloader Classpath) and have 'checked' all my classes and jars, I haven't 'checked' commons-loggin.jar jsp-api.jar, servlet-api.jar. So on launching tomcat via the plugin, I can get it running with devloader as shown in eclipse console view [DevLoader] Starting DevLoader [DevLoader] projectdir=F:\Work\eclipse_workspace\myapp1 [DevLoader] added file:/F:/Work/eclipse_workspace/myapp1/WEB-INF/classes/ [DevLoader] added file:/F:/Work/eclipse_workspace/myapp1/WEB-INF/lib/activation.jar However, if I even add a single System.out.println into any java file and save it, the whole application gets reloaded (takes ~80 sec) which is as good as stopping/starting tomcat itself. I've tried adding -Xdebug in JAVA_OPTS in the catalina.bat but no luck :( Can you please guide where I may be doing it wrong.. Please note that I can 'redeploy' the whole application on tomcat but that's not what I need, I am looking to be able to make small changes in java classes 'on-the-fly' while coding/debugging without having to wait for complete app restart. Another annoyance is that restarting tomcat/application causes the session/debug progress to be lost.. Can you please guide me how to go about it. PS: I am not using any ant/maven scripts explicitly, just relying on eclipse to do the build for me (which it does).

  The answer accepted here (JFreechart(Java) - How to draw lines that is partially dashed lines and partially solid lines?) helped me start down the path of changing my seriesstroke lines on my chart. After stepping through my code and watching the changes, I see that my seriesstroke does in fact change to "dashedStroke" when it is supposed to (after a certain date "dai"), but when the chart is rendered the entire series line is dashed.
