  • Best approach to accessing multiple data source in a web application

    - by ced
    I've a base web application developed with .net technologies (asp.net) used into our LAN by 30 users simultanousley. From this web application I've developed two verticalization used from online users. In future i expect hundreds users simultanousley. Our company has different locations. Each site use its own database. The web application needs to retrieve information from all existing databases. Currently there are 3 database, but it's not excluded in the future expansion of new offices. My question then is: What is the best strategy for a web application to retrieve information from different databases (which have the same schema) whereas the main objective performance data access and high fault tolerance? There are case studies in the literature that I can take as an example? Do you know some good documents to study? Do you have any tips to implement this task so efficient? Intuitively I would say that two possible strategy are: perform queries from different sources in real time and aggregate data on the fly; create a repository that contains the union of the entities of interest and perform queries directly on repository;

  • Materialized View does not import properly when importing on a second instance of a database

    - by marinus
    When I import a database with materialized view mv_mt in just one database (Oracle) everything is ok. create materialized view mv_mt refresh complete next trunc( sysdate ) + 1 as SELECT sysdate, media_type.* from media_type; But when I try to import the same database to a copy in another schema I get the following errors: IMP-00017: following statement failed with ORACLE error 1: "BEGIN DBMS_JOB.ISUBMIT(JOB=438,WHAT='dbms_refresh.refresh(''"ALEXANDRA"" "."MV_MT"'');',NEXT_DATE=TO_DATE('2012-07-02:14:22:36','YYYY-MM-DD:HH24:MI:" "SS'),INTERVAL='sysdate + 1 / 24 / 60 / 6 ',NO_PARSE=TRUE); END;" IMP-00003: ORACLE error 1 encountered ORA-00001: unique constraint (SYS.I_JOB_JOB) violated ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_JOB", line 100 ORA-06512: at line 1 IMP-00017: following statement failed with ORACLE error 23421: "BEGIN dbms_refresh.make('"ALEXANDRA"."MV_MT"',list=null,next_date=null," "interval=null,implicit_destroy=TRUE,lax=FALSE,job=438,rollback_seg=NUL" "L,push_deferred_rpc=TRUE,refresh_after_errors=FALSE,purge_option = 1,par" "allelism = 0,heap_size = 0); END;" IMP-00003: ORACLE error 23421 encountered ORA-23421: job number 438 is not a job in the job queue ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_SYS_ERROR", line 86 ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_IJOB", line 793 ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_REFRESH", line 86 ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_REFRESH", line 62 ORA-06512: at line 1 IMP-00017: following statement failed with ORACLE error 23410: "BEGIN dbms_refresh.add(name='"ALEXANDRA"."MV_MT"',list='"ALEXANDRA"."MV" "_MT"',siteid=0,export_db='ORCL01'); END;" IMP-00003: ORACLE error 23410 encountered ORA-23410: materialized view "ALEXANDRA"."MV_MT" is already in a refresh group ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_SYS_ERROR", line 95 ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_IREFRESH", line 484 ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_REFRESH", line 140 ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_REFRESH", line 125 ORA-06512: at line 1 Anyone any ideas? • Microsoft and Joyent Announce Node.js Windows Port

With the Node.js command line tool, developers can type ?node my_app.js.' to run JavaScript programs. It gives developers a JavaScript application programming interface (API) supplies access for the network and file system as well. One instance where Node.js often comes in handy is in the creation of scalable networked programs that emphasize high concurrency and low response times. Developers who wish to use Node.js use on Windows at this time must do so running a virtual machine with Linux. Claudia Caldato, Principal Program Manager of Microsoft's Interoperability Strategy Team, offered...

  • Cannot connect to windows server by name over vpn connection

    - by ErocM
I have a rented dedicated windows server on a public ip that is acting as a SQL Server and VPN server. I need to connect to this server via computer name to get replication in place. I cannot use an ip address due to this issue: So, due to this, we are going the VPN route. That is my primary issue: After I am connected to this server's vpn, I can connect to SQL Server using the ip address but I cannot connect by the computer's name as you can see below... Right now, there is no hardware firewall on it since I had it removed to test this issue. I am running Windows 2008 Enterprise Server as the VPN server. I am not sure if the route print will help any from the workstation trying to connect but here is the info: IPv4 Route Table Active Routes: Network Destination Netmask Gateway Interface Metric 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 21 10.0.0.2 255.255.255.255 On-link 10.0.0.2 276 Any other info needed? Thanks for the help! ========= CLARIFICATION ON A FEW THINGS #1 ========= This is the server's info: This is the workstation that is trying to connect: I connect to the server via "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Connect or Disconnect" You can see here that I am connected: ========= CLARIFICATION ON A FEW THINGS #2 ========= I've tried to connect directly to the Sql Server as I did above but with the computers name and I couldn't get to it. Here I am trying to net view it from the workstation and it couldn't find it:

  • Crime Scene Investigation: SQL Server

    - by Rodney Landrum
“The packages are running slower in Prod than they are in Dev” My week began with this simple declaration from one of our lead BI developers, quickly followed by an emailed spreadsheet demonstrating that, over 5 executions, an extensive ETL process was running average 630 seconds faster on Dev than on Prod. The situation needed some scientific investigation to determine why the same code, the same data, the same schema would yield consistently slower results on a more powerful server. Prod had yet to be officially christened with a “Go Live” date so I had the time, and having recently been binge watching CSI: New York, I also had the inclination. An inspection of the two systems, Prod and Dev, revealed the first surprise: although Prod was indeed a “bigger” system, with double the amount of RAM of Dev, the latter actually had twice as many processor cores. On neither system did I see much sign of resources being heavily taxed, while the ETL process was running. Without any real supporting evidence, I jumped to a conclusion that my years of performance tuning should have helped me avoid, and that was that the hardware differences explained the better performance on Dev. We spent time setting up a Test system, similarly scoped to Prod except with 4 times the cores, and ported everything across. The results of our careful benchmarks left us truly bemused; the ETL process on the new server was slower than on both other systems. We burned more time tweaking server configurations, monitoring IO and network latency, several times believing we’d uncovered the smoking gun, until the results of subsequent test runs pitched us back into confusion. Finally, I decided, enough was enough. Hadn’t I learned very early in my DBA career that almost all bottlenecks were caused by code and database design, not hardware? It was time to get back to basics. With over 100 SSIS packages and hundreds of queries, each handling specific tasks such as file loads, bulk inserts, transforms, logging, and so on, the task seemed formidable. And yet, after barely an hour spent with Profiler, Extended Events, and wait statistics DMVs, I had a lead in the shape of a query that joined three tables, containing millions of rows, returned 3279 results, but performed 239K logical reads. As soon as I looked at the execution plans for the query in Dev and Test I saw the culprit, an implicit conversion warning on a join predicate field that was numeric in one table and a varchar(50) in another! I turned this information over to the BI developers who quickly resolved the data type mismatches and found and fixed “several” others as well. After the schema changes the same query with the same databases ran in under 1 second on all systems and reduced the logical reads down to fewer than 300. The analysis also revealed that on Dev, the ETL task was pulling data across a LAN, whereas Prod and Test were connected across slower WAN, in large part explaining why the same process ran slower on the latter two systems. Loading the data locally on Prod delivered a further 20% gain in performance. As we progress through our DBA careers we learn valuable lessons. Sometimes, with a project deadline looming and pressure mounting, we choose to forget them. I was close to giving into the temptation to throw more hardware at the problem. I’m pleased at least that I resisted, though I still kick myself for not looking at the code on day one. It can seem a daunting prospect to return to the fundamentals of the code so close to roll out, but with the right tools, and surprisingly little time, you can collect the evidence that reveals the true problem. It is a lesson I trust I will remember for my next 20 years as a DBA, if I’m ever again tempted to bypass the evidence.

  • Why many designs ignore normalization in RDBMS?

    - by Yosi
I got to see many designs that normalization wasn't the first consideration in decision making phase. In many cases those designs included more than 30 columns, and the main approach was "to put everything in the same place" According to what I remember normalization is one of the first, most important things, so why is it dropped so easily sometimes? Edit: Is it true that good architects and experts choose a denormalized design while non-experienced developers choose the opposite? What are the arguments against starting your design with normalization in mind?

  • Hired developer insists on doing things the wrong way

    - by Tariq- iPHONE Programmer
Hello, i am working with Social Networking iphone app which require remote data connection. So i hired a php developer in order to provide me RESTful services. But when i start working with him, he arguing me that he will not make stored procedures and web services. Instead of he suggested me to pass query as a parameter. Suppose If I have to call Search service, he told me to send POST request with 3 parameters: Query="select * from users", username=abd and password = 123 And i thing there is no such architecture in order to use remote data. Then he is saying it is possible through socket programming. And I am 100% sure this is not an appropriate way to access remote data. This is simply illogical. Thousands of iphone application using REST/SOAP services to make remote data connection He just declined me to provide RESTful services. Please its my heartily advice to all developers that post your own views over here. So that I can show to that developers that these are the views from all developers worldwide.

  • Database IDs

    - by fatherjack
Just a quick post, mainly to test out the new blog format but related to a question on the #sqlhelp hashtag. The question came from Justin Dearing (@zippy1981) as: So I take it database_id isn’t an ever incrementing value. #sqlhelp When a new database is created it is given the lowest available ID. This either is in a gap in IDs where a database has been dropped or the database ID is incremented by one from the highest current ID if there are no gaps to fill. To see this in action, connect to your sandbox server and try this: USE MASTER GO CREATE DATABASE cherry GO USE cherry GO SELECT DB_ID() GO CREATE DATABASE grape GO USE grape GO SELECT DB_ID() GO CREATE DATABASE melon GO USE melon GO SELECT DB_ID() GO USE MASTER GO DROP DATABASE grape GO CREATE DATABASE kiwi GO USE kiwi GO SELECT DB_ID() GO USE MASTER GO DROP DATABASE cherry DROP DATABASE melon DROP DATABASE kiwi You should get an incrementing series of database IDs as the databases are created until the last one where the new database gets allocated the ID that is missing because one was dropped.

  • Managing Data Growth in SQL Server

'Help, my database ate my disk drives!'. Many DBAs spend most of their time dealing with variations of the problem of database processes consuming too much disk space. This happens because of errors such as incorrect configurations for recovery models, data growth for large objects and queries that overtax TempDB resources. Rodney describes, with some feeling, the errors that can lead to this sort of crisis for the working DBA, and their solution.

  • Benchmarking ORM associations

    - by barerd
I am trying to benchmark two cases of self referential many to many as described in datamapper associations. Both cases consist of an Item clss, which may require many other items. In both cases, I required the ruby benchmark library and source file, created two items and benchmarked require/unrequie functions as below: Benchmark.bmbm do |x| x.report("require:") { item_1.require_item item_2, 10 } x.report("unrequire:") { item_1.unrequire_item item_2 } end To be clear, both functions are datamapper add/modify functions like: componentMaps.create :component_id => item.id, :quantity => quantity componentMaps.all(:component_id => item.id).destroy! and links_to_components.create :component_id => item.id, :quantity => quantity links_to_components.all(:component_id => item.id).destroy! The results are variable and in the range of 0.018001 to 0.022001 for require function in both cases, and 0.006 to 0.01 for unrequire function in both cases. This made me suspicious about the correctness of my test method. Edit I went ahead and compared a "get by primary key case" to a "finding first matching record case" by: (1..10000).each do |i| Item.create :name => "item_#{i}" end Benchmark.bmbm do |x| x.report("Get") { item = Item.get 9712 } x.report("First") { item = Item.first :name => "item_9712" } end where the results were very different like 0 sec compared to 0.0312, as expected. This suggests that the benchmarking works. I wonder whether I benchmarked the two types of associations correctly, and whether a difference between 0.018 and 0.022 sec significant?

  • How to bypass vpn talking to VMWare Guest?

    - by marc esher
Greetings. Network/VPN n00b question here. I'm running VMWare Workstation with a Guest Windows 2003 Server. It has SQL Server 2000 installed. The sole purpose for this Guest is to house SQL Server... it needn't have internet access or access to any other resources on the network other than the host. When launch Check Point VPN software, the host routes through the company network before it connects to the guest ... i.e. it's no longer a direct connection. I assume this is just how things are supposed to work. However, what's happening is that the connection between my host and the SQL Server instance on the guest intermittently drops. It's not consistent, and some databases on the server will be responsive while others aren't. It appears that the databases with the most traffic on the guest (the ones I'm hitting with load tests) are the ones that become intermittently unresponsive. This problem only manifests when VPN is on; when it's off, I can pound away on this database with no troubles. Thanks for any advice!

  • OpenID implementation - PHP, Javascript, MySQL

    - by Marc A.
Hello, I've started doing some research on the technologies that I will need for my website. I'm trying to implement a really simple website with OpenID user registration. The website will store a block of text for each user. I imagine this means that I will need a database with: User ID Open ID url Data Having said that, I'm still having trouble deciding what I really need to do this. I know that I will need the following for the actual site: Javascript JQuery CSS But on the back end, I'm kind of lost at the moment. I've been looking at the OpenID-Selector, which is coded in Javascript. It seems like it's exactly what is used on this site. Will I actually need PHP? MySQL for the data and user registration? Thanks for the kickstart!

  • Concurrency checking with Last Change Time

    - by Lijo
I have a following three tables Email (emailNumber, Address) Recipients (reportNumber, emailNumber, lastChangeTime) Report (reportNumber, reportName) I have a C# application that uses inline queries for data selection. I have a select query that selects all reports and their Recipients. Recipients are selected as comma separacted string. During updating, I need to check concurrency. Currently I am using MAX(lastChangeTime) for each reportNumber. This is selected as maxTime. Before update, it checks that the lastChangeTime <= maxTime. --//It works fine One of my co-developers asked why not use GETDATE() as “maxTime” rather than using a MAX operation. That is also working. Here what we are checking is the records are not updated after the record selection time. Is there any pitfalls in using GETDATE() for this purpose?
