• MySql transfer / update (a bit specific)

  before posting I was digging whole site but didn't find help for my problem, so I hope someone will help... Facts: 30 Gb mysql database on remote server (about 20.000.000 rows) data are once weekly updated in local network (mysql) I need to transfer/replace local updated database with remote connection is about 2mb (real mb, not mbps) up/down Point is that I can't have 'down time' of remote mysql server. Until now I Tried: navicat data sync - Ok, but take about 3 days to finish dbForge - ok but need 5 days to finish mysql dump transfer to remote server and execution - about day, but a lot of downtime rsync folder with database /mysql/lib/MY_DATABASE - 4 hours, but after that I need to execute always 'repir on remote server' which takes about 2 hours, and a lot of down time mysql dump piped from cl to directly goto server - still now satisfied many problems I could give you more things that I tried... mysql replication - slow Anyase, what is best,best way to: refresh remote mysql on weekly level and in same time to have 0 sec down time nor huge server load If you have any idea please share

  I can turn the touchpad off in the mouse settings, but two things won't work: The "disable while typing" option The standard on/off button for the touch pad won't work (it's the one with the little touchpad symbol crossed off, on the F6 key). I've tried any of the following combinations: Alt+F6 Fn+F6 Ctrl+F6 Super+F6 Shift+F6. Almost all the other keys of that kind work, like brightness control, volume control, Wifi toggle, but this one and the mic off and camera off won't work.

• Need to hookup HP dv7-3085dx with NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M to my Dell 30 inch LCD 3007WFP at max resolution

  I recently bought an HP laptop (dv7-3085dx) which is supposed to have a pretty good video card (NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M). The card is supposed to output a max resolution of 2560x1600 which is also the max resolution of my monitor. I've now bought an HDMI to dual link DVI cable - this is after Best Buy's 70 dollar HDMI to DVI (perhaps it was 'single' link?) didn't give me the best resolution. In Windows 7, when I try to set the max resolution for my 30" monitor, I only get 1280x800, which is absurd. The monitor is great, I love the laptop and the video card supposedly supports such resolutions. I therefore can't figure out why I'm not getting a better resolution. When I "detect" my monitor in Windows 7, it is shown correctly as a DELL 3007WFP!

• Installing NVIDIA driver causes black screen (750M)

  I have a dual boot set up on a Lenovo Ideapad Y500 with NVIDIA 750M and I am having problems installing the graphics cards. I have made sure to install both linux-headers-generic and linux-source, and yet have ended up with a black screen whether I install nvidia-current, nvidia-current-updates, nvidia-experimental-310, and nvidia-319. I even tried enabling proprietary drivers through settings and still ended up with a black screen on boot. Is my graphics card just not supported yet, or is there a way to fix this?

• How to arrange 2 SSD with 2 SATA?

  I like to have best io performance as well as good capaciyy and reliability out of a server that hosts a busy forum, which involves loads of static files download. I am wondering what is the best plan to format and use the disks given that the server has only 4 disk bays and I have 2 SSD and 2 SATA disks at hand. I am currently thinking about putting the disks in RAID 10 so that SSD contains /var/lib/mysql as well as most of the OS (Likely to be Debian) and SATA disk to contain /path/to/static/files. However I'd like to hear your expert opinion on this. Thanks

  Do anyone knows any kind of apps or services for "taking care of servers"? (besides managed servers) There are hundreds of ways your server or application can stop working properly. Small things are easy to miss but usually easy to fix. Log overgrouth, configuration issues, etc. Of course there are best practice checklists, but its not a human task to check configuration best practices. Im sure it can be automated: some kind of agent can monitor all system settings, say what is right and wrong and give suggestions on how to make it right. I have to admin several servers and I need some kind of overview of overall situation. As well as a tool, that will fix problems automatically. Can you people suggest something? (I know its a little bit out of rules of SF, but I think this particular question is quite specific) It would be great to have something like http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1451319/asp-net-mvc-view-engine-comparison but for automation software.

• Safest snapshot of a failing harddrive?

  I have a headless machine that stopped booting, so I pulled it out for diagnostics and got a message that one of the harddrives was about to fail, so I pulled them all out and I need to get everything off, before figuring out which I need to get rid of. I wasn't sure which drive was failing, because it only said "Harddrive 1" and I don't know which it referred to. I'm wondering the best way to get everything off. I'm worried if I copy everything, I could get corrupt data and not realize some files are wrong until the drive is completely out of commission. What are my best options to get everything off in a way I can safely move to new storage?

• What video format(s) should be used to serve Macs, PCs, and Mobile Devices?

  In 2007, I started a site based on streaming and downloading poker strategy videos. At that point in time, the best solution I came up with for supporting users of Macs and PCs was to provide the videos in both WMV and FLV formats. Later we added an M4V version to support iPhones/iPods. Obviously, things have changed a bit since that time. I would like to revisit our format decision to see if there is anything better that we could offer, preferrably with wider support among all devices (so that we can reduce the number of formats offered, if possible). Is FLV + WMV + M4V the best solution? Is there something else we should consider? What about Android devices?

• Is it okay to just add a page or two PHP page to add some functionality to a Drupal site?

  I'm not familiar with Drupal, really. I can dig around the admin interface and navigate the directories and find the files that I need to just fine as well. What I'm really not familiar with is adding modules or extending modules. The site currently takes an order and sets up recurring payments through Ubercart and uses Authorize.net as a gateway. Right now, when a payment fails, a single e-mail gets sent out to the admin. We'd like to extend it to send an e-mail to the user and let them change their payment information through another page on the site. Authorize has a service called Silent Post URL that basically just posts a carbon copy in XML to whatever URL you give it. We'd like to accept that XML, deserialize it, parse the data, send a notice to the user and give them the page for updating their information. So, I guess it'll be two PHP pages. One for the XML API call from Authorize.net, and then one for the page for the users' to update their payment information. Could I just create two simple pages each handling their own tasks, or should I check out properly extending a module? If it's appropriate for me to write up the pages and not have to hook them into the module, what would be the best way to handle setting up what needs to get done? (The most experience I've had with extending a PHP site has been hacking away at someone else' poorly constructed, custom framework, so if anyone has any good resources perhaps on PHP best practices that they could share through a PM or a comment, I'd appreciate It) (Also, I'm still getting the hang of Stack Exchange, so if this isn't appropriate please let me know. I'll delete it.)

• Upgrade PHP 5.1.6 to 5.2.x on Fedora 6 - Solutions?

  I have a CRM on an old Fedora server, running Apache 2.2.6, MySQL 5.0.27, and PHP 5.1.6. I see a couple of options to fix my problem, but I thought I would consult the pros on this one here at Server Fault to see if I'm missing anything. This is after spending a good while searching the net for solutions. Option 1 Upgrade Fedora, step-wise, to Fedora 7 and then to 8, and then the PHP packages I need would be available. I know this is hazardous, because of repository location, dependencies, etc. Option 2 Upgrade using this method. This may or may not work, and so would be considered a crap shoot. I consulted some IT people and they say the best best is to back up data and build a new server with updated hard and software. I happen to agree, but wanted to exhaust all my resources first.

• Require password to login to Nexus 7

  The default behavior in the Nexus 7 Image is to log straight in to the default user's desktop, bypassing the lightdm greeter. This seems like an acceptable behavior for testing the core but it's clearly insecure. I've changed the default password and would like lightdm to actually require the password to be entered, rather than just having a button that says "login". I've turned automatic login on and off in System Settings ? User Accounts but this doesn't help. Any suggestions?

• Is setting an empty/blank DNS A record allowed?

  I'm trying to wrap my head around the wonderful world on DNS. I have created a zone file for example.com which contains: @ A 1.2.3.4 * A 1.2.3.4 However I am also setting up my local DNS, local.example.com which I have created a separate zone file for containing the following: machine1 A 192.168.0.1 machine2 A 192.168.0.2 When I dig machine1.local.example.com it returns A record 192.168.0.1, great. Sadly, badmachine.local.example.com returns 1.2.3.4, as does local.example.com. I'm not sure of the best way to prevent this. If I add the following to the local.example.com empty A records are returned for the above 2 examples as is the behaviour I desire: @ A * A Is this allowed? Is this best practice, or am I doing things terribly wrong? I'm using PowerDNS with BIND backend. Thanks for your thoughts!

• Desktop is too big for my screen

• Why using Fragments?

  I have read the documentation and some other questions' threads about this topic and I don't really feel convinced; I don't see clearly the limits of use of this technique. Fragments are now seen as a Best Practice; every Activity should be basically a support for one or more Fragments and not call a layout directly. Fragments are created in order to: allow the Activity to use many fragments, to change between them, to reuse these units... == the Fragment is totally dependent to the Context of an activity , so if I need something generic that I can reuse and handle in many Activities, I can create my own custom layouts or Views ... I will not care about this additional Complexity Developing Layer that fragments would add. a better handling to different resolution == OK for tablets/phones in case of long process that we can show two (or more) fragments in the same Activity in Tablets, and one by one in phones. But why would I use fragments always ? handling callbacks to navigate between Fragments (i.e: if the user is Logged-in I show a fragment else I show another fragment). === Just try to see how many bugs facebook SDK Log-in have because of this, to understand that it is really (?) ... considering that an Android Application is based on Activities... Adding another life cycles in the Activity would be better to design an Application... I mean the modules, the scenarios, the data management and the connectivity would be better designed, in that way. === This is an answer of someone who's used to see the Android SDK and Android Framework with a Fragments vision. I don't think it's wrong, but I am not sure it will give good results... I am interested in your views as employees. To get the discussion started, here is a list off the top of my head (not in any particular order): High-end computer with a huge screen or two. The best software tool money can buy as per Joel's test). That isn't too much to ask given many of the best tools are free (think git). Flexibility is a bonus- if a particular platform/ piece of software is not absolutely required, I would like to pick my OS and IDE. A quality chair Quiet workspace. Open plan is fine as long as there are meeting rooms so that there is no constant chatter going on around me. Spacious workspace. I would rather have more than three inches between my mouse and the person next to me's keyboard. Food and drink at work. Many companies these days have fruit baskets, biscuits, etc available to their employees, some even offer free lunch. Education. If my employer wants my skills to stay up-to-date, they should at the very least understand I need time to learn. If they want to pay for my books and conference registration fees, I am more than happy to accept. Other options include organizing internal knowledge exchange days or inviting speakers from outside. Flexible hours/ option to work from home is a bonus

• having public computers without joining the domain

  Good Morning, I would like to know what is the best arrangement for setting up 24 computers at a facility. We do not want these computers to join our domain because of security concerns. We plan on having these public computers connect to our wifi network. If anyone knows of the best way to approach this, that would be great! We also need to add printers to these public computers. We would also like to lock each computer down. Since we are not connecting by network, I assume we would have to configure each group policy.
