• Ubuntu 14.10 no GUI or term login

  I have updated yesterday my Ubuntu 14.10 installation with apt-get dist-upgrade. I was working all afternoon and after that I have rebooted computer. Once done it, lightdm doesn't starts (only gnome logo) and I can not view any of Ctrl + Shift + [1-6] terminals (cursor is blinking). I have read a lot of posts with no success: nividia/intel conflicts (I have a laptop with an Intel graphic card) I have enabled nomodeset and tried all this options My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? I have repaired grub I can load recovery/livecd/windows and mount partitions and network without problem I have all packages and system updated Here my logs. X11 not shows any error or problem, is loading all needed drivers without problem. How can I raise the level of debug? Best regards.

• In 12.04, with my Linksys WUSB54G USB adapter I can see the networks, but cannot connect to any of them

  I recently loaded Ubuntu version 12.04 onto my computer, and I have a WUSB54G v4 USB wireless adapter. I first tried to get it to work by simply plugging my adapter into an open USB port. This seemed to work fine, it came up with a list of wireless adapters, so I clicked on the correct one and entered the security code. It looked like it was going to connect. It tried for about five minutes before I stopped it. I then decided to create a network as I also have one setup. I did this and it connected, only one problem, I couldn't get onto the internet. Please help me, I am new to Ubuntu and am totally lost.

• Cannot get laptop wifi to work in ubuntu 12.4

  Hi i have a Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4106 laptop and i recently installed ubuntu 12.4 on it and i cannot get the wifi to connect for the life of me. When i tried ubuntu out before installing it, the wifi worked while windows was still installed on it. Then i installed ubuntu and now there is no wifi. I can't even flip the wifi network switch to the on position. I installed the driver from realtek for the linux driver and still nothing. Doing rfkill list all shows soft blocked: no and hard blocked: yes. Can anyone help me :p haha very frusterating. It probably is something very dumb. Thanks

• Connection make b/w iphone to windows pc-rajay [on hold]

  I Need to create connection between ios to windows by using socket programming in ios. I'm trying to to use an application to communicate with Windows via sockets. At the minimum, I'm trying to at least figure out how I can create a connection from the iPhone (maybe using the iPhone to ping the Windows machine?) I'm not really clear on where I need to start. I'm pretty new to iOS development in general, and brand new to socket/network programming. I've tried several tutorials that haven't gotten me far. My goal is: Connect to a server via sockets (the server will be a Windows machine with a service waiting for incoming connections from the iPhone) If possible, I would like to write/build the client piece first, but I have been lost thus far. Hopefully the nice folks in the SO community can lend a hand and point me in the right direction.

• My site will not process Credit Cards [closed]

  Authorized.net was processing my credit card purchases until the end of Feb. As of 3/1/2011 they no longer will process electronic cigarette transactions. Processing network told us we would have a seamless transition over to a processor called EPN. Now we can not process and credit card orders at all. I have been told it's an SSL concern (EPN says no) I have been told it's an issue between Authorized.net and EPN again I am told no. Might site worked and functioned fine until the "seamless" transition took place. Please help me out here. Thanks Dave

• eth0 missing after upgrading from Hoary to Dapper

  I'm trying to upgrade a fairly old server that's been running Hoary for the last five years. I followed the directions on the wiki, but when I restarted after upgrading to Dapper, eth0 disappeared from ifconfig -a. I can see two ethernet adapters in lspci and lshw, and if I put in an Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD it registers eth0 and eth1 perfectly well. Their MAC addresses also match what's in /etc/iftab. It was working fine before the upgrade, and I have no idea what else I should be trying at this point. The server is entirely cut off from the network right now. EDIT: /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules doesn't exist, either.

• CellC data card not recognized if I boot with it in

  In 11.10 I find that I can connect to the internet via broadband connection successfully. The problem is that I cannot have the data card attached to the machine while the machine boots up. If I leave the data card in the machine during startup, the data card is not picked up and I then cannot connect to the internet. I must first boot up my machine, login, attach the data card into the usb port, wait so 30 seconds. The broadband connection name will then appear in the network dropdown at the top of the screen. An internet connect is now possible via broadband. Please let me know what must be done to fix this.

• How does the HUD prioritize commands?

  Every now and then I want to reach the "Edit Preferences" menu item in Firefox, and the HUD makes this very convenient. ALT + "Edi" will suggest exactly that to me. Something that I find annoying however is that if I complete the work "Edit" instead, the HUD will switch to suggest "Network Edit preferences" instead. While this is a perfectly valid match as well, it seems like an inconsistent behaviour to me. Could someone explain in more detail how the matching works, so that I can make better use of the HUD?

  Possible Duplicate: There's an issue with an Alpha/Beta Release of Ubuntu, what should I do? Because of a few problems i had with ubuntu, I hoped that they would solve themselve by upgrading my system to v12.10. Now they are solved, jeeehaaa, but now I have a new problem.   I am building a social bookmarking service that is monetized in part by Google Adsense. However, I don't know how to influence how the ads are displayed. I think Google scans my pages and decides itself which ads to show where. Navigation on my site is mainly based on the selection of categories or tags being provided by the users. So after a user filters a list of bookmarks by the tag "SEO", I think I know pretty well what he is looking for. So I am looking for a service that allows me to show contextual ads for these particular keywords. How I can guide Google to show relevant ads? Can you recommend an alternative ad network, that gives me more control?

But I'll seriously miss OneDrive integration (all my files are there). There is some kind of app that can sync with it? And what is the easiest way to install JDK? Through PPAs? • Internet connectivity issues

  I'm on 12.04, I upgraded a month ago from Windows 7 on my Sony VAIO. Everything is great except after the upgrade, I encountered Internet connectivity issues. When browsing the web or loading videos, my Internet will stop working in the middle and come back after a period of 30 seconds to 2 minutes or sometimes it just won't and I'll have to disconnect and re-connect to the network. I've noticed the issue when sending e-mails as well, they just won't send at all. It says sending request and the circle keeps spinning slowly until I get to a page where it says the page wouldn't load and gives me the reason DNS error. I tried setting OpenDNS as my DNS provider but that didn't help.

  I used to work in a place where a common practice was to use Pair Programming. I remember how many small things we could learn from each other when working together on the code. Picking up new shortcuts, code snippets etc. with time significantly improved our efficiency of writing code. Since I started working with SQL Server I have been left on my own. The best habits I would normally pick from working together with other people which I cannot do now. So here is the question: What are you tips on efficiently writing TSQL code using SQL Server Management Studio? Please keep the tips to 2 – 3 things/shortcuts that you think improve you speed of coding Please stay within the scope of TSQL and SQL Server Management Studio 2005/2008 If the feature is specific to the version of Management Studio please indicate: e.g. “Works with SQL Server 2008 only" Thanks EDIT: I am afraid that I could have been misunderstood by some of you. I am not looking for tips for writing efficient TSQL code but rather for advice on how to efficiently use Management Studio to speed up the coding process itself. • Simple iPhone drawing app with Quartz 2D

  I am making a simple iPhone drawing program as a personal side-project. I capture touches event in a subclassed UIView and render the actual stuff to a seperate CGLayer. After each render, I call [self setNeedsLayout] and in the drawRect: method I draw the CGLayer to the screen context. This all works great and performs decently for drawing rectangles. However, I just want a simple "freehand" mode like a lot of other iPhone applications have. The way I thought to do this was to create a CGMutablePath, and simply: CGMutablePathRef path; -(void)touchBegan { path = CGMutablePathCreate(); } -(void)touchMoved { CGPathMoveToPoint(path,NULL,x,y); CGPathAddLineToPoint(path,NULL,x,y); } -(void)drawRect:(CGContextRef)context { CGContextBeginPath(context); CGContextAddPath(context,path); CGContextStrokePath(context); } However, after drawing for more than 1 second, performance degrades miserably. I would just draw each line into the off-screen CGLayer, if it were not for variable opacity! The less-than-100% opacity causes dots to be left on the screen connecting the lines. I have looked at CGContextSetBlendingMode() but alas I cannot find an answer. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Other iPhone apps are able to do this with very good efficiency.

  I'm working on a website on a Fmylife style. Now the homepage is the page showing the list of the latest posts. But I think there is a problem with that: The most "interesting" page is the one showing the top posts of the last days, but that page has very few visits compared to the main page. I suppose that's only because the main page is the "default" one. So, I've been thinking of making a home page that shows no posts (only one at the top of the page) but 4 big buttons showing the visitors what are the options to browse the content. But I'm also afraid that most users will not click any option and leave the site having seen no posts. So I don't know what to do. Obviously I have no idea of what will be good from a usability/efficiency point of view. Maybe a mix of the two options will be the best, but I don't know how to mix them. Any advice or idea will be greatly appreciated.   I am posing this question looking for practical advice on how to design a system. Sites like amazon.com and pandora have and maintain huge data sets to run their core business. For example, amazon (and every other major e-commerce site) has millions of products for sale, images of those products, pricing, specifications, etc. etc. etc. Ignoring the data coming in from 3rd party sellers and the user generated content all that "stuff" had to come from somewhere and is maintained by someone. It's also incredibly detailed and accurate. How? How do they do it? Is there just an army of data-entry clerks or have they devised systems to handle the grunt work? My company is in a similar situation. We maintain a huge (10-of-millions of records) catalog of automotive parts and the cars they fit. We've been at it for a while now and have come up with a number of programs and processes to keep our catalog growing and accurate; however, it seems like to grow the catalog to x items we need to grow the team to y. I need to figure some ways to increase the efficiency of the data team and hopefully I can learn from the work of others.
