  • Missing menu items for Azure SQL tables within SQL Server Management Studio?

    I have a table (say Table1) that is replicated via SQL Data Sync Agent across a local SQL Server 2012 as well as an Azure SQL Server (part of Microsoft Azure). Everything about Table1 (schema, table values etc ) is identical to the best of my understanding. However, when I list and right click Table1 from Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2012 (SSMS), I get some very different menu options, even for seemingly basic stuff. Lets focus only on the 'Design' menu item: It is visible for Table1 on the local SQL server in SSMS It is missing for Table1 on Azure SQL via SSMS It is visible for Table1 (as Open Table Definition) on Azure SQL when reaching it via Visual Studio 2012 (Server Explorer - Data connections) This is seen in the screenshots below: Now I use scripts from some real stuff (esp when I need to check in the SQL scripts etc) but this difference concerns me to some extent. Am I witnessing just a tools artifact in SQL Server Management Studio when connecting to Azure SQL? or is it something more serious about limitations of Azure SQL itself (although, just seeing the Design surface is so basic!)?

    I'm interested in setting up a professional WordPress site but I'd like to explore the pssibilities to leave the management of the webserver and even WordPress' management to a company that guarantees great availability, performance of the site (load times, security) and even SEO. My site is currently running on other platform but I plan on a migration on the next 4 weeks. I've done this usually, but I'd like to focus on the content, so I don't have to mess with webserver/mysql/php configs in order to get nice performance. Is there some (maybe hosting) company that is dedicated to this? Would it be better to hire a sysadmin with experience in those matters?

    I am setting up golden gate, this installation guide is quite confusing as it refers to steps which have not been done or already done previously. I am on step 4.8.1 on the ''oracle installation guide''. I is asking for ''Extract'' user name. I do not recall creating such other than the goldengate user. Also what are the other four users it refers to as in 4.6 Extract Replicat Manager DEFGEN what is the usernames for each of these in the db?

  • Does SQL Server Management Studio 2008 Activity Monitor work with SQL Server 2000?

    I am trying to use SQL Server Management Studio 2008's Activity Monitor with an SQL Server 2000 instance to diagnose some query performance issues. I can connect SMSS 2008 to the db fine, and use it to browse objects and run queries. But when I press the Activity Monitor button, it pops up an error message saying: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio This operation does not support connections to Microsoft SQL Server Personal Edition version 8.00.818. This MSDN article implies that Activity Monitor works with SQL Server 2000. Is it the fact that it's Personal Edition that's preventing it from working? The error message isn't clear whether it's the edition or version that's the problem.

  • Rails: constraint violation on create but not on update

    Note: This is a "railsier" (and more succinct) version of this question, which was getting a little long. I'm getting Rails behavior on a production server that I can't replicate on the development server. The codebases are identical save for credentials and caching settings, and both are powered by Oracle 10g databases with identical schema (but different data). My Rails application contains a user model, which has_one registration; registration in turn has_and_belongs_to_many company_ownerships through a registration_ownerships table. Upon registering, users fill out data pertinent to all three models, including a series of checkboxes indicating what registration_ownerships might apply to their account. On the dev server, the registration process is seamless, no matter what data is entered. On production, however, if users check off any of the company ownership fields before submitting their registration, Oracle complains about a constraint violation on the primary key of the company_ownerships table (which is a two-field key based on company_ownership_id and registration_id) and users get the standard Rails 500 error screen. In every case, I've verified that no conflicting record on these two fields exists in the production database, so I don't know why the constraint is getting violated. To further confuse things, if a user registers without listing any ownerships and later goes back and modifies their account to reflect ownership data (which is done through the same interface), the application happily complies with their request and Oracle is well-behaved (this is both on production and dev). I've spent the past couple days trying to figure out what might be causing this problem and am reaching the end of my wits. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • ORA- 01157 / Cant connect to database

    Hi everyone, this is a follow up from this question. Let me start by saying that i am NOT a DBA, so i'm really really lost with this. A few weeks ago, we lost contact with one of our SID'S. All the other services are working, but this one in particular is not. What we got was this message when trying to connect ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress An attempt to alter database open ended up in ORA-01157: cannot identify/lock data file 6 - see DBWR trace file ORA-01110: data file 6: '/u01/app/oracle/oradata/xxx/xxx_data.dbf' I tried to shutdown / restart the database, but got this message. Total System Global Area 566231040 bytes Fixed Size 1220604 bytes Variable Size 117440516 bytes Database Buffers 444596224 bytes Redo Buffers 2973696 bytes Database mounted. ORA-01157: cannot identify/lock data file 6 - see DBWR trace file ORA-01110: data file 6: '/u01/app/oracle/oradata/xxx/xxx_data.dbf' When all continued the same, I erased the dbf files (rm xxx_data.dbf xxx_index.dbf), and recreated them using touch xxx_data.dbf. I also tried to recreate the tablespaces using `CREATE TABLESPACE DATA DATAFILE XXX_DATA.DBF` and got Database not open As I said, i don't know how bad this is, or how far i'm from gaining access to my database (well, to this SID at least, the others are working). I would imagine that a last resource would be to throw everything away, and recreating it, but I don't know how to, and I was hoping there's a less destructive solution. Any help will be greatly appreciated . Thanks in advance.

  • Trying to not need two separate solutions for x86 and x64 program.

    Hi all, I have a program which needs to function in both an x86 and an x64 environment. It is using Oracle's ODBC drivers. I have a reference to Oracle.DataAccess.DLL. This DLL is different depending on whether the system is x64 or x86, though. Currently, I have two separate solutions and I am maintaining the code on both. This is atrocious. I was wondering what the proper solution is? I have my platform set to "Any CPU." and it is my understanding that VS should compile the DLL to an intermediary language such that it should not matter if I use the x86 or x64 version. Yet, if I attempt to use the x64 DLL I receive the error "Could not load file or assembly 'Oracle.DataAccess, Version=2.102.3.2, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format." I am running on a 32 bit machine, so the error message makes sense, but it leaves me wondering how I am supposed to efficiently develop this program when it needs to work on x64. Thanks.

    I'm having a weird problem with index organized table. I'm running Oracle 11g standard. i have a table src_table SQL> desc src_table; Name Null? SQL> select count(*) from src_table; COUNT(*) ---------- 21108244 now let's create another table and copy 2 columns from src_table set timing on SQL> create table dest_table(id number(16), hash number(20), type number(1)); Table created. Elapsed: 00:00:00.01 SQL> insert /*+ APPEND */ into dest_table (id,hash,type) select id, hash, 1 from src_table; 21108244 rows created. Elapsed: 00:00:15.25 SQL> ALTER TABLE dest_table ADD ( CONSTRAINT dest_table_pk PRIMARY KEY (HASH, id, TYPE)); Table altered. Elapsed: 00:01:17.35 It took Oracle < 2 min. now same exercise but with IOT table SQL> CREATE TABLE dest_table_iot ( id NUMBER(16) NOT NULL, hash NUMBER(20) NOT NULL, type NUMBER(1) NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT dest_table_iot_PK PRIMARY KEY (HASH, id, TYPE) ) ORGANIZATION INDEX; Table created. Elapsed: 00:00:00.03 SQL> INSERT /*+ APPEND */ INTO dest_table_iot (HASH,id,TYPE) SELECT HASH, id, 1 FROM src_table; "insert" into IOT takes 18 hours !!! I have tried it on 2 different instances of Oracle running on win and linux and got same results. What is going on here ? Why is it taking so long ?

    I'm having difficulty modifying a script for this situation and wondering if someone maybe able to help: I have an address table and a phone table both sharing the same column called id_number. So id_number = 2 on both tables refers to the same entity. Address and phone information used to be stored in one table (the address table) but it is now split into address and phone tables since we moved to Oracle 11g. There is a 3rd table called both_ids. This table also has an id_number column in addition to an other_ids column storing SSN and some other ids. Before the table was split into address and phone tables, I had this script: (Written in Sybase) INSERT INTO sometable_3 ( SELECT a.id_number, a.other_id, NVL(a1.addr_type_code,0) home_addr_type_code, NVL(a1.addr_status_code,0) home_addr_status_code, NVL(a1.addr_pref_ind,0) home_addr_pref_ind, NVL(a1.street1,0) home_street1, NVL(a1.street2,0) home_street2, NVL(a1.street3,0) home_street3, NVL(a1.city,0) home_city, NVL(a1.state_code,0) home_state_code, NVL(a1.zipcode,0) home_zipcode, NVL(a1.zip_suffix,0) home_zip_suffix, NVL(a1.telephone_status_code,0) home_phone_status, NVL(a1.area_code,0) home_area_code, NVL(a1.telephone_number,0) home_phone_number, NVL(a1.extension,0) home_phone_extension, NVL(a1.date_modified,'') home_date_modified FROM both_ids a, address a1 WHERE a.id_number = a1.id_number(+) AND a1.addr_type_code = 'H'); Now that we moved to Oracle 11g, the address and phone information are split. How can I modify the above script to generate the same result in Oracle 11g? Do I have to first do INNER JOIN between address and phone tables and then do a LEFT OUTER JOIN to both_ids?   • Connecting to MSSQL Express in silverlight 4 appl, the db doesn't shows up in Management Studio Expr

    I'm using MSSQLExpress named instance in my Silverlight 4 application. The database located in the web application data folder. I attached the db via VS2010. The program works, but the db doesn't show up in Management Studio Express. If I delete the connection from within VS2010, and Try to attach to db via Management Studio Express, on writes, that the database with same the name already exists. Why the database connected via VS2010 doesn't show up in Management Studio Express? Thanks in advance Gabor

  • IE9, LightSwitch Beta 2 and Zune HD: A Study in Risk Management?

    Photo by parl, 'Risk.’ Under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs License This has been a busy week for Microsoft, and for me as well.  On Monday, Microsoft launched Internet Explorer 9 at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, TX.  That evening I flew from New York to Seattle.  On Tuesday morning, Microsoft launched Visual Studio LightSwitch, Beta 2 with a Go-Live license, in Redmond, and I had the privilege of speaking at the keynote presentation where the announcement was made.  Readers of this blog know I‘m a fan of LightSwitch, so I was happy to tell the app dev tools partners in the audience that I thought the LightSwitch extensions ecosystem represented a big opportunity – comparable to the opportunity when Visual Basic 1.0 was entering its final beta roughly 20 years ago.  On Tuesday evening, I flew back to New York (and wrote most of this post in-flight). Two busy, productive days.  But there was a caveat that impacts the accomplishments, because Monday was also the day reports surfaced from credible news agencies that Microsoft was discontinuing its dedicated Zune hardware efforts.  While the Zune brand, technology and service will continue to be a component of Windows Phone and a piece of the Xbox puzzle as well, speculation is that Microsoft will no longer be going toe-to-toe with iPod touch in the portable music player market. If we take all three of these developments together (even if one of them is based on speculation), two interesting conclusions can reasonably be drawn, one good and one less so. Microsoft is doubling down on technologies it finds strategic and de-emphasizing those that it does not.  HTML 5 and the Web are strategic, so here comes IE9, and it’s a very good browser.  Try it and see.  Silverlight is strategic too, as is SQL Server, Windows Azure and SQL Azure, so here comes Visual Studio LightSwitch Beta 2 and a license to deploy its apps to production.  Downloads of that product have exceeded Microsoft’s projections by more than 50%, and the company is even citing analyst firms’ figures covering the number of power-user developers that might use it. (I happen to think the product will be used by full-fledged developers as well, but that’s a separate discussion.) Windows Phone is strategic too…I wasn’t 100% positive of that before, but the Nokia agreement has made me confident.  Xbox as an entertainment appliance is also strategic.  Standalone music players are not strategic – and even if they were, selling them has been a losing battle for Microsoft.  So if Microsoft has consolidated the Zune content story and the ZunePass subscription into Xbox and Windows Phone, it would make sense, and would be a smart allocation of resources.  Essentially, it would be for the greater good. But it’s not all good.  In this scenario, Zune player customers would lose out.  Unless they wanted to switch to Windows Phone, and then use their phone’s battery for the portable media needs, they’re going to need a new platform.  They’re going to feel abandoned.  Even if Zune lives, there have been other such cul de sacs for customers.  Remember SPOT watches?  Live Spaces?  The original Live Mesh?  Microsoft discontinued each of these products.  The company is to be commended for cutting its losses, as admitting a loss isn’t easy.  But Redmond won’t be well-regarded by the victims of those decisions.  Instead, it gets black marks. What’s the answer?  I think it’s a bit like the 1980’s New York City “don’t block the box” gridlock rules: don’t enter an intersection unless you see a clear path through it.  If the light turns red and you’re blocking the perpendicular traffic, that’s your fault in judgment.  You get fined and get points on your license and you don’t get to shrug it off as beyond your control.  Accountability is key.  The same goes for Microsoft.  If it decides to enter a market, it should see a reasonable path through success in that market. Switching analogies, Microsoft shouldn’t make investments haphazardly, and it certainly shouldn’t ask investors to buy into a high-risk fund that is sold as safe and which offers only moderate returns.  People won’t continue to invest with a fund manager with a track record of over-zealous, imprudent, sub-prime investments.  The same is true on the product side for Microsoft, and not just with music players and geeky wrist watches.  It’s true of Web browsers, and line-of-business app dev tools, and smartphones, and cloud platforms and operating systems too.  When Microsoft is casual about its own risk, it raises risk for its customers, and weakens its reputation, market share and credibility.  That doesn’t mean all risk is bad, but it does mean no product team’s risk should be taken lightly. For mutual fund companies, it’s the CEO’s job to give his fund managers autonomy, but to make sure they’re conforming to a standard of rational risk management.  Because all those funds carry the same brand, and many of them serve the same investors. The same goes for Microsoft, its product portfolio, its executive ranks and its product managers.

    When you move your application from Development to Production, there is more often then not, a need to change the web service endpoint URL in your ADF application. If you are using a Web Service Data Control(WSDC), you can do this in more than one ways. The following example illustrates how this can be done.At Design TimeIf the application workspace is in your control, you can quickly do this by updating the definition in DataControl.dcx file:Along with this, you will also need to change the endpoint in connections.xml. So invoke the Edit Connections dialog: Then, change the endpoint URL.At DeploymentAnother way to change is changing the endpoint at the ear level, at deployment. So when you select Deploy -> Application Server at the Application level, it will bring up a Deployment Configuration dialog, in which you can edit the WSDL URL:Also, change the Port URL:At Post DeploymentIf your need to change this post deployment, you can do it through Oracle Enterprise Manager. But for this, your application needs to be configured with a writable MDS repository. It is recommended you use a Database MDS store during deployment. So have your application configured (by having an entry in adf-config.xml) and server configured (by having a MDS store registered). Once done, you can configure the ADF Connection in EM for this application:Change the WSDL location here on 'Edit':Also, change the Port using Advance Connection Configuration:Change the Endpoint Address here:Apply Changes and you are done!

    Request-Reply is a new feature in 11g JMSAdapter that helps you achieve the following:Allows you to combine Request and Reply in a single step. In the prior releases of the Oracle SOA Suite, you would require to configure two distinct adapters. Performs automatic correlation without you needing to configure BPEL "correlation sets". This would work seamlessly in Mediator and BPMN as well.In order to configure the JMSAdapter Request-Reply, please follow these steps:1) Drag and drop a JMSAdapter onto the "External References" swim lane in your composite editor. 2) Enter default values for the first few screens in the JMS Adapter wizard till you hit the screen where the wizard prompts you to enter the operation name.     When an OUBI bug requires a fix to the Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) code, the fix is delivered as an MDL export file that will need to be imported and deployed in OWB. If more than one bug is being patched, then a recent question came in that asked if it would be possible to import one after the next, and then do the deploy steps once? The answer is Yes, all of the imports can be done before any of objects are deployed. Once all of the objects have been deployed, then the TCL scripts that need to be rerun can be run, and then the objects that were changed can be deployed. The order that the MDL files are loaded does not matter unless the same object is in two or more MDL files. In that case, the latest MDL file should be loaded last. For example, if two MDL files both contain changes to the SPLMAP_F_RECENT_CREW mapping, and one was created on January 2, 2009 and the second one was created on March 14, 2009, then the January 2 file should be loaded first and the March 14 file should be loaded second. Note that if the MDL files are always loaded in the order that they were created by Release Services, then this will work correctly.

    During the recent Multi Node to Single Node R12 Clone, Encountered an strange error. When doing the database portion of the clone. Below command 'adclonectx.pl' creates the Context file perl adclonectx.pl contextfile=$ORACLE_HOME/appsutil/SOURCE_CONTEXT_FILE.xml template=$ORACLE_HOME/appsutil/template/adxdbctx.tmp pairsfile=$ORACLE_HOME/appsutil/clone/pairsfile.txt initialnode   When running the same command, It dumped the below error,   file:/tmp/tmpCtxClone.xml<Line 1, Column 1>: XML-20108: (Fatal Error) Start of root element expected. AC-10006: Exception - org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: file:/tmp/tmpCtxClone.xml<Line 1, Column 1>: XML-20108: (Fatal Error) Start of root element expected. thrown while creating OAVars object for file: /tmp/tmpCtxClone.xml The new database context file has been created :   /opt/oracle/product/11.1.0_IOFT/appsutil/IOFT_frws35ta.xml   At first site, I suspected that the issue is with format of the source xml file. Hence compared with the working XML file. Result is clean. Below portion of the error struck me Thrown while creating OAVars object for file: /tmp//dummy.xml   Cause : The /tmp is 100% full.   Fix: Either remove the old files in /tmp  directory  OR  export TEMP=/new/location where there is plenty of free space.
