• Unable to build mercurial on OSX - Python.h not found

  For what I've read I need Python-Dev, how do I install it on OSX? I think the problem I have, is, my Xcode was not properly installed, and I don't have the paths where I should. This previous question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2685887/where-is-gcc-on-osx-i-have-installed-xcode-already Was about I couldn't find gcc, now I can't find Python.h Should I just link my /Developer directory to somewhere else in /usr/ ??? • B64 String Being Stripped From HttpService JSON Object Flex 4.0

  I am trying to decode some b64 images obtained from a web service in my Flex application. The response of this web service is a basic JSON object, with a property (B64Image) that contains the encoded string. The service works fine from my regular browser, however the b64 string gets stripped. So the object the result handler gets has a null value for B64Image. Anyone see something wrong here? • Ria Services vs WCF Dataservices

  My Team are evaluation to a bigger Business portal. (Invoicing, Bookkeeping, Salaries.....) We are all used to work with DDD, O/R mappers with NHibernate as our first choice. We have chosen to work with CompositeWPF to keep modularity between all modules and part system in the business portal. Now we have evaluated Ria Services and are kind of disappointed how it works in a Data Oriented way, Data Oriented can be good in a service oriented scenario, but we feel that we can with an Object Oriented approach to, and we feel that we can get an application with less complexity with the OO approach than the DO approach. For example it doesn't allow Value Objects, Many-to-many relations, everything needs to have keys and so on. We haven't looked at WCF Data Services yet so our question is WCF Data Services our answere? Does it integrate good with Silverlight 4? Can we work with it in a OO manor?

  I'm new to rails and have volunteered to help out the local High School Track team with a simple database that tracks the runners performances. For the moment, I have three models: Runners, Race_Data and Races. I have the following associations. Runners have_many Race_Data Races have_many Race_Data I also want create the association Runners Have_Many Races Through Race_Data, but as my look at the diagram I have drawn, there is already a many to one relationship from Race_data to Races. Does the combination of Runners having many Race_Data and Race_Data having one Race imply a Many_to_Many relationship between Runners and Races?

• Problem with Gallio and TeamCity and the new Visual Studio 2010 release

  I am running TeamCity on a virtual machine. I have installed the new Visual Studio 2010 release yesterday and converted my VS 2008 projects. I also have installed .NET Framework 4 on my virtual machine. Before yesterday all my projects were building succesfully on the CI server but since I installed VS 2010 I get the following error message : error MSB5014: File format version is not recognized. MSBuild can only read solution files between versions 7.0 and 9.0, inclusive. I did change my config on Team City to take into account the new .NET 4 framework : Build Runner : MSBuild Build File Path : CFT.msbuild MSBuild version : Microsoft.NET Framework 4.0 MSBuild ToolsVersion : 4.0 Run Platform : x86 I think it has something to do with the fact that now MSBuild must refer to .NET 4 framwork but it seems that it keeps refering to 2.0.

• Accessing TFS from Powershell

  Hello I am new to PowerShell and I am trying to get branches from TFS and merge them using a PowerShell script. Unfortunately I am failing a first hurdle. I do have Visual Studio 2010 install on my local machine and can access the TFS server (also 2010) fine. I am running the script from my local machine and have the following lines: $tfs = get-tfs http://TFSServerName:8080/TFSProject $branchfolders = $tfs.VCS.GetItems('$/Dev/Branches/', $tfs.RecursionType::OneLevel) and I receive the following error on the second line 2 above Exception calling "GetItems" with "2" argument(s): "Unable to connect to the remote server" I have configured the TFS server to accept incoming connections on port 8080 which works but I am now not to sure how to resolve this error. Is further configuration required? Thanks for any help given.

• Documenting user scenarios and measuring/testing

  Please forgive me as I don't quite remember the exact terms for what I am talking about... hence my question. Recently I worked on a large Agile team where I encountered a method of defining user scenarios (much like user stories). These scenarios were a few very basic short sentences with keywords and a structure that could be understood by humans (especially project managers) and could also be coded against using some Java Framework (for verifying tests). The exact structure of this mini language used keywords like "when" and "and" or "if" which was how the framework parsed and verified the result. The purpose of this framework was to interface between management and the acceptance testing framework. So essentially management could write the tests themselves using English. The scenario went something like this: "When a user visits URL and User clicks on X Something happens (that can be measured)" Can anyone help me remember exactly what I am talking about? Many thanks

  I would like to know if there is a website where I could download the Apache POI ported for .net? I already found this link in the web http://www.apache.org/~avik/dist/poi-2.5.1-dev-20040708.dll But the version of apache poi now is 3.6, I was wondering if there is a latest version out there? Does the apache foundation support such porting? I already tried to search the apache website too with no avail. As for using Microsoft library, the excel interopt is not that good for concurrent processing like a web backend. If I use the DocumentFormat.OpenXML library, I have a limitation of creating office 2007 document only.

• Entity Framework Custom T4 Template

  Hello, I am using the Entity Framework 4.0 and I am trying to extend my POCO classes generated by the standart T4 template with some custom properties. The classes which are generated by default from EF (without T4) contain 2 properties for every navigation property - NavigationPropertyId and navigationPropertyReference. What I am trying to do is basically extend the generated POCO class with an "Id" property of the foreign key object. I know that I can do that by editing the POCO t4 template. However I have no idea how I can populate/persist the property - I guess I have to somehow extend/modify the method than converts the object to a sql query and vice versa, but I have no idea where to start. Can anyone help? Edit: I just found out, that the EF team has planned to implement something like this - http://blogs.msdn.com/efdesign/archive/2010/03/10/poco-template-code-generation-options.aspx (see Basic POCO with/without Fixup), however this can take ages, so I rather implement it myself.

• Should I use WPF or ASP.NET for my next Web Application development?

  We have a web application that has been built using MySQL / PHP / Javascript+JQuery, with server-side HTML generation. The problem is that of the 10 software developers that work for the company, none are PHP experts (we're all .NET / C# developers). I need to make a recommendation to my management team on which technologies to use as the platform for the next generation of web application products. I want to leverage the .NET / C# expertise which the company has and is otherwise building, and so am inclined to recommend some Microsoft technologies. We don't want a client-side plugin, and we don't need flashy animations/multimedia, so I'm ruling out Silverlight. Is WPF ready for primetime? Is ASP.NET deprecated by WPF? How do I choose between these two technologies? Big Question, I know... I can refine it based on your comments if necessary. Thanks for taking the time.

  I'm going to rephrase this question. As it turns out the original answer wasn't definitive and problems were found. ======================================================================= In my app, I access my sqlite database at the following hard-coded location in my code: /data/data/com.mydomain.appname/databases/database.db If I turn ON copy protection in the Market Place, will my app still have access to this location? Or will I have to change it to something like: */data-private/*data/com.mydomain.appname/databases/database.db (or something like this) Since I have a Dev phone only, I have no way of testing to see if my app still functions normally after turning on copy protection.   I have a page that requires a scrollbar - http://www.aus-media.com/dev/site_BYJ/schedule-pricing/pricing.html You will notice (unless you are running at a high resolution with a big screen) that there is an outer scrollbar for the main page as well as an inner scrollbar for the content. When you click on one of the sub items e.g. payments you will notice that the outer page scrolls down as well as the inner scrollbar. Does anybody know of a way to only scroll the inner scrollbar, so only it jumps to the id? Thanks guys Nik

• PHP SOAP client accessing server on non-standard port

  The service I'm trying to send requests to is accessible via a non-standard port - so not port 80. It is accessible locally via port 80. So I've tested the app locally and it works fine. But when I deploy it on the production server (not on the LAN), it fails. Once again for clarity: -dev server is on the LAN -SOAP server is on the LAN -production server is on the WAN -SOAP server is accessible through the NAT/FW via a non-standard http port (not 80) The soap client is created with the specified WSDL URI. For example: $this->client = new Zend_Soap_Client('http://server.com:10080/path/service.asmx?WSDL'); But queries to not work: $this->client->function($query); I get an: Internal Server Error Exception thrown. Is PHP broken in this regard? Is there a workaround?

  I've seen mspec used with nunit on some blogs and discussions. In fact, most of the examples on the web that I've seen demonstrate mspec with some kind of nunit dependancy or integration. My team is attempting to use mspec without nunit on a new ASP.NET MVC2 project. We're not at the spec-writing stage yet, so I can't tell what is better. What it your experience with this? Are there benefits to using mspec with nunit? Without?

  How would you go about constructing a step by step form that uses AJAX through Drupal to pull the next form step? For example, Step 1: I like Baseball I don't like Baseball. When that person clicks on either Like or Don't Like, I want to use AJAX to recognize and pull the next part of the form, remove/hide the first section since its not needed, and present the next section. Example: Step 1: I like Baseball *click (fade out) Step 2: My favorite team is __________ The player I like most is __________ What is the best way to do this through Drupal Form API? I know how to build the forms and modules, but I have never used AJAX yet. I know a few things exist out there that are supposed to help, but I wanted to know if anyone here has done it and how they approached it.

  A team member of mine recently setup some Hudson continuous-integration builds for a number of our development code bases. It uses the built in ant integration configured in simple way. While, it is very helpful and I recommend it strongly, I was wondering how to get more more concise/informative/useful emails instead of just the tail of the ant build log. E.G., Don't want this: > [...truncated 36530 lines...] > [junit] Tests run: 32, Failures: 0, Errors: 0, Time elapsed: 0.002 sec ... • ruby / rails / mysql performance degraded on Snow Leopard

  I've burned a bunch of hours on this. I'm not having problems getting things to build, but I am seeing that my test suite runs about 2x slower than when I was on OS X 10.5.x . I've spent a lot of time playing around with different optimization settings (learning to avoid homebrew's llvm-gcc compilation). I've just learned that I needed to tweaks /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist in order to get the kernel to boot in 64 bit mode. However, my rails app is still running a bit slower than before, even after warming up the mysql server. So what performance tweaks might i need to look into? Right now the stock ruby 1.8.7 runs faster than 1.9.1 for some things, and I'd really like to know if there is anything I should be looking for. All my dev software has been compiled for x86_64, mysql with -O2 optimization, using regular gcc (not llvm-gcc).

• nohup SBCL ubuntu couldn't read from standard input

  On Ubuntu I compiled sbcl 1.0.35 with threading. I can happily use sbcl from the command line and my hunchentoot website works with threading but when I logout it's gone. When I attempt to nohup sbcl nohup ./src/runtime/sbcl --core output/sbcl.core I get (SB-IMPL::SIMPLE-STREAM-PERROR "couldn't read from ~S" # 9) I've attempted various combinations of redirecting the standard input to /dev/null or a file and using the script command line option but I don't quite get what is going on. How do I start sbcl from the command line on linux with nohup and keep my repl(website) running?

Can you please list some example queries - prior and after optimization? It has to be query tuning – not adding index, not making covering index, not making any alteration to table. No change is supposed to be done on table and index. [ I understand that indexes are important. • SQL 2008 Database tuning advisor won't start

  For some reason I can't get DTA to connect to my development machine. It connects to a remote DB just fine but when I point it to my dev machine I get an error saying: Failed to initialize MSDB database for tuning (exit code: -1073741819). I'm pretty sure it's not a permissions issue since I've used profiler to capture what it's doing and all of the commands it's run so far look fine and are being run under my account which is associated with the sysadmin role, when I run them in sql management studio they go through fine. I'm pretty convinced that the problem is related to creating the objects in MSDB that are used by DTA but I tried creating these manually (I found scripts on the web) and it just seems to push the problem along the line slightly. I'm going out of my mind - have even tried reinstalling SQL but that's not fixed it. I'm using SQL 2008 with SP1 (10.0.2531) on windows server 2008 (patched up to date). SAVE ME!!!!!

• What is causing a Hibernate SQL query exception?

  Hi all and sorry in advance for this post but I've spent way too much time going around in circles so I'm hoping someone could shed a light on it here for me. I updated a webapp on Tomcat and I'm getting the following error which didn't exist on the previous version. Though I am quite confident that the part of code I modifed isn't to blame as I have tested the app on two different dev servers. The production server is configured thus: CentOS 5.4 virtual server with tomcat 5.5.23 running mysql 5.0.77. The two dev servers are: Windows XP SP2 running tomcat 5.5.23 with mysql 5.1.49 Mac OSX 10.6.6 Running tomcat 6 with mysql 5.1.51 The application was developed using struts (1.1 as far as I can gather) with hibernate 3 as the peristence layer. It only fails on the production server for some reason I can't fathom. I'd like to draw your attention to the java.sql.SQLException near the bottom. After some long searching I found this but because it was posted years ago (about 1 year before development started on this app I'm sure Hibernate has evolved from that version. as I can't find a way of implementing his solution. I use Eclipse Helios as an IDE.   Hello, Currently, I have a build chain, completly manage by automake, like: .vala > .c > .o > .exe I would like add a new step for preprocess a XML file .ui into a vala source: .ui > .vala > .c > .o > .exe I did this, in makefile.am gtkbuilder2vala_SOURCES = \ abstract-window.ui \ main.vala \ $(NULL) And: XSLTPROC = xsltproc .ui.vala: $(XSLTPROC) ... But make don't understand: make: *** No rule to make target `abstract-window.c', needed by `gtkbuilder2vala-abstract-window.o'. Stop. This seems to be a limitation of make: http://www.ensta.fr/~diam/dev/online/autoconf/autobook/autobook_180.html if the translation takes three steps--from .m' to.x', then from .x' to.c', and finally to `.o'---then Automake's simplistic approach will break. Have you another idea?
