• Mercurial to Mercurial to Subversion Workflow Problem

  We're migrating from Subversion to Mercurial. To facilitate the migration, we're creating an intermediate Mercurial repository that is a clone of our Subversion repository. All developers will be begin switching over to the Mercurial repository, and we'll periodically push changes from the intermediate Mercurial repository to the existing Subversion repository. After a period of time, we'll simply obsolete the Subversion repository and the intermediate Mercurial repository will become the new system of record. Dev 1 Local --+--> Mercurial --+--> Subversion Dev 2 Local --+ + Dev 3 Local --+ + Dev 4 -------------------------+ I've been testing this out, but I keep running into a problem when I push changes from my local repository, to the intermediate Mercurial repository, and then up into our Subversion repository. On my local machine, I have a changeset that is committed and ready to be pushed to our intermediate Mercurial repository. Here you can see it is revision #2263 with hash 625... I push only this changeset to the remote repository. So far, everything looks good. The changeset has been pushed. hg update 1 files updated, 0 files merged, 0 files removed, 0 files unresolved I now switch over to the remote repository, and update the working directory. hg push pushing to svn://... searching for changes [r3834] bmurphy: database namespace pulled 1 revisions saving bundle to /srv/hg/repository/.hg/strip-backup/62539f8df3b2-temp adding branch adding changesets adding manifests adding file changes added 1 changesets with 1 changes to 1 files rebase completed Next, I push the change up to Subversion, works great. At this point, the change is in the Subversion repository and I return attention back to my local client. I pull changes to my local machine. Huh? I've now got two changesets. My original changeset appears as a local branch now. The other changeset has a new revision number 2264, and a new hash 10c1... Anyway, I update my local repo to the new revision. I'm now switched over. So, I finally click the "determine and mark outgoing changesets" and as you can see Mercurial still wants to push out my previous changesets even though they've already been pushed. Clearly, I'm doing something wrong. I also can't merge the two revisions. If I merge the two revisions on my local machine, I end up with a "merge" commit. When I push that merge commit out to the intermediate Mercurial repository, I can no longer push changes out to our Subversion repository. I end up with the following problem: hg update 0 files updated, 0 files merged, 0 files removed, 0 files unresolved hg push pushing to svn://... searching for changes abort: Sorry, can't find svn parent of a merge revision. and I have to rollback the merge to get back to a working state. What am I missing?

• MetadataType, inherited properties and client validation in ASP.NET MVC 2

  Inherited properties and MetadataType does not seem to work with client side validation in ASP.NET MVC 2. The validation of our MetadataTypes work as expected on the server but for some reason it does not generate the appropriate client scripts for it. Client side validation kicks in as expected for properties with the DataAnnotations attributes set on the PersonView so I know that client side validation is active and that it works. Does anyone know if or how it can be fixed? • C# Problem with Settings.Reload() and Settings.Save() Settings not loading

  I have a strange issue that I can't figure out. I have a custom settings class that inherits ApplicationSettingsBase. When I creating the SettingsForm and change AccountList Settings value, the user.config file changes as excepected. My Apply/Ok button for my SettingsForm calls Settings.Save() then Settings.Reload() then closes the form. The problem is that when .Reload() is called, the Settings.AccountList becomes null. Whats more is that the user.config file never changes, if i close the application and reopen, the user.config file is still correct, but the Settings.AccountList is never read in. The Settings.AccountList is read in if i never call the .Reload() however. Update: If I create a List and Save(); from my MainForm, then the AccountList will be read in from my user.config fine. However If I add to the AccountList using my secondary form (SettingsForm) and call Save() then the next time the application is run the settings are not read in and a null value is returned in it's place. This happens even if I do not use Reload(). I think the problem has something to do with using the Generic List<. The AccountKeyClass that is being saved is saved as Serialized XML.

• Uploading multiple images through Tumblr API

  I have about 300 images I want to upload to my new Tumblr account, becuase my old wordpress site got hacked and I no longer wish to use wordpress. I uploaded one image a day for 300 days, and I'd like to be able to take these images and upload them to my tumblr site using the api. The images are currently local, stored in /images/. They all have the date they were uploaded as the first ten characters of the filename, (01-01-2009-filename.png) and I went to send this date parameter along as well. I want to be able to see the progress of the script by outputting the responses from the API to my error_log. How do I get all of the images in the directory and loop through them? • ASP.NET MVC 2: Updating a Linq-To-Sql Entity with an EntitySet

  I have a Linq to Sql Entity which has an EntitySet. In my View I display the Entity with it's properties plus an editable list for the child entites. The user can dynamically add and delete those child entities. The DefaultModelBinder works fine so far, it correctly binds the child entites. Now my problem is that I just can't get Linq To Sql to delete the deleted child entities, it will happily add new ones but not delete the deleted ones. I have enabled cascade deleting in the foreign key relationship, and the Linq To Sql designer added the "DeleteOnNull=true" attribute to the foreign key relationships. If I manually delete a child entity like this: myObject.Childs.Remove(child); context.SubmitChanges(); This will delete the child record from the DB. But I can't get it to work for a model binded object. I tried the following: // this does nothing public ActionResult Update(int id, MyObject obj) // obj now has 4 child entities { var obj2 = _repository.GetObj(id); // obj2 has 6 child entities if(TryUpdateModel(obj2)) //it sucessfully updates obj2 and its childs { _repository.SubmitChanges(); // nothing happens, records stay in DB } else ..... return RedirectToAction("List"); } and this throws an InvalidOperationException, I have a german OS so I'm not exactly sure what the error message is in english, but it says something along the lines of that the entity needs a Version (Timestamp row?) or no update check policies. I have set UpdateCheck="Never" to every column except the primary key column. public ActionResult Update(MyObject obj) { _repository.MyObjectTable.Attach(obj, true); _repository.SubmitChanges(); // never gets here, exception at attach } I've read alot about similar "problems" with Linq To Sql, but it seems most of those "problems" are actually by design. So am I right in my assumption that this doesn't work like I expect it to work? Do I really have to manually iterate through the child entities and delete, update and insert them manually? For such a simple object this may work, but I plan to create more complex objects with nested EntitySets and so on. This is just a test to see what works and what not. So far I'm disappointed with Linq To Sql (maybe I just don't get it). Would be the Entity Framework or NHibernate a better choice for this scenario? Or would I run into the same problem?

I create a recordset of all users when the program is started and then select USERNAME and GRANTED_ROLE from the record set where USERNAME and PASSWORD are found. I use a "Set role 'GRANTED_ROLE' identified by 'password'" statment and Cn.Execute statement to set up the user's access rights. This is all done in a Module. On a form, I want to call a Stored Procedure that will SELECT, INSERT and UPDATE information into another schema's tables. • PostgreSQL to Data-Warehouse: Best approach for near-real-time ETL / extraction of data

  Background: I have a PostgreSQL (v8.3) database that is heavily optimized for OLTP. I need to extract data from it on a semi real-time basis (some-one is bound to ask what semi real-time means and the answer is as frequently as I reasonably can but I will be pragmatic, as a benchmark lets say we are hoping for every 15min) and feed it into a data-warehouse. How much data? At peak times we are talking approx 80-100k rows per min hitting the OLTP side, off-peak this will drop significantly to 15-20k. The most frequently updated rows are ~64 bytes each but there are various tables etc so the data is quite diverse and can range up to 4000 bytes per row. The OLTP is active 24x5.5. Best Solution? From what I can piece together the most practical solution is as follows: Create a TRIGGER to write all DML activity to a rotating CSV log file Perform whatever transformations are required Use the native DW data pump tool to efficiently pump the transformed CSV into the DW Why this approach? TRIGGERS allow selective tables to be targeted rather than being system wide + output is configurable (i.e. into a CSV) and are relatively easy to write and deploy. SLONY uses similar approach and overhead is acceptable CSV easy and fast to transform Easy to pump CSV into the DW Alternatives considered .... Using native logging (http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.3/static/runtime-config-logging.html). Problem with this is it looked very verbose relative to what I needed and was a little trickier to parse and transform. However it could be faster as I presume there is less overhead compared to a TRIGGER. Certainly it would make the admin easier as it is system wide but again, I don't need some of the tables (some are used for persistent storage of JMS messages which I do not want to log) Querying the data directly via an ETL tool such as Talend and pumping it into the DW ... problem is the OLTP schema would need tweaked to support this and that has many negative side-effects Using a tweaked/hacked SLONY - SLONY does a good job of logging and migrating changes to a slave so the conceptual framework is there but the proposed solution just seems easier and cleaner Using the WAL Has anyone done this before? Want to share your thoughts?

• Silverlight Update/Trigger IValueConverter in Listbox DataTemplate in a DataGrid

  Hi I am building an application to display a datagrid bound to an ObservableCollection of Records, where each record has a Course Object and an ObservableCollection of Results Objects. The course is changed using an autocomplete box. The results collection is displayed in a Listbox with an IValueConverter implementation to change the colour of the ellipse template based on criteria of the course currently selected. It works great on loading, but subsequent updates to the course selection via the autocomplete does not trigger a recalculation/refresh of the value converter. Is there a way to trigger the refresh in XAML. I added UpdateSource=Property changed to the binding of the list box - but this caused a stack overflow (haha). Trying to prevent myself going anymore grey :) Had thoughts of getting the binding expression of the list in the grid and updating it, but no clue ? Thanks guys

• Android Mediaplayer: setDataSource issue for downloaded media file

  I have an application that will record and play audio files. Some of the audio files are downloaded using simple standard http downloads using httpclient. It worked like a charm for a long time. Now all of a sudden I cannot play the files I download. It fails with this stack. I store the files on the SDCard and I experience the problem both on a handset and a USB connected device. I have checked that the downloaded file is cool on the server, and I can play it without any issues. • Binding a wpf listbox to a combobox

  Hi there, I have created a very basic wpf application that I want to use to record time entries against different projects. I havent used mvvm for this as I think its an overkill. I have a form that contains a combobox and a listbox. I have created a basic entity model like this What I am trying to do is bind the combobox to Project and whenever I select an item from the combobox it updates the listview with the available tasks associated with that project. This is my xaml so far. I dont have any code behind as I have simply clicked on that Data menu and then datasources and dragged and dropped the items over. The application loads ok and the combobox is been populated however nothing is displaying in the listbox. • How can I do something ~after~ an event has fired in C#?

  I'm using the following project to handle global keyboard and mouse hooking in my C# application. This project is basically a wrapper around the Win API call SetWindowsHookEx using either the WH_MOUSE_LL or WH_KEYBOARD_LL constants. It also manages certain state and generally makes this kind of hooking pretty pain free. I'm using this for a mouse gesture recognition software I'm working on. Basically, I have it setup so it detects when a global hotkey is pressed down (say CTRL), then the user moves the mouse in the shape of a pre-defined gesture and then releases global hotkey. The event for the KeyDown is processed and tells my program to start recording the mouse locations until it receives the KeyUp event. This is working fine and it allows an easy way for users to enter a mouse-gesture mode. Once the KeyUp event fires and it detects the appropriate gesture, it is suppose to send certain keystrokes to the active window that the user has defined for that particular gesture they just drew. I'm using the SendKeys.Send/SendWait methods to send output to the current window. My problem is this: When the user releases their global hotkey (say CTRL), it fires the KeyUp event. My program takes its recorded mouse points and detects the relevant gesture and attempts to send the correct input via SendKeys. However, because all of this is in the KeyUp event, that global hotkey hasn't finished being processed. So, for example if I defined a gesture to send the key "A" when it is detected, and my global hotkey is CTRL, when it is detected SendKeys will send "A" but while CTRL is still "down". So, instead of just sending A, I'm getting CTRL-A. So, in this example, instead of physically sending the single character "A" it is selecting-all via the CTRL-A shortcut. Even though the user has released the CTRL (global hotkey), it is still being considered down by the system. Once my KeyUp event fires, how can I have my program wait some period of time or for some event so I can be sure that the global hotkey is truly no longer being registered by the system, and only then sending the correct input via SendKeys?

• Failed to load viewstate

  OK have just started getting this error and I'm not sure why. I have a hosting page which has listview and a panel with a usercontrol. The listview loads up records with a linkbutton. You click the link button to edit that particular record - which gets loaded up in the formview (within the usercontrol) which goes to edit mode. After an update occurs in the formview I'm triggering an event which my hosting page is listening for. The hosting page then rebinds the listview to show the updated data. • Problem with .NET Settings.Reload() and Settings.Save() Settings not loading

  I have a strange issue that I can't figure out. I have a custom settings class that inherits ApplicationSettingsBase. When I creating the SettingsForm and change AccountList Settings value, the user.config file changes as excepected. My Apply/Ok button for my SettingsForm calls Settings.Save() then Settings.Reload() then closes the form. The problem is that when .Reload() is called, the Settings.AccountList becomes null. Whats more is that the user.config file never changes, if i close the application and reopen, the user.config file is still correct, but the Settings.AccountList is never read in. The Settings.AccountList is read in if i never call the .Reload() however. Update: If I create a List and Save(); from my MainForm, then the AccountList will be read in from my user.config fine. However If I add to the AccountList using my secondary form (SettingsForm) and call Save() then the next time the application is run the settings are not read in and a null value is returned in it's place. This happens even if I do not use Reload(). I think the problem has something to do with using the Generic List<. The AccountKeyClass that is being saved is saved as Serialized XML.

• OperationalError "unable to open database file" processing query results with SQLAlchemy and SQLite3

  I'm running into this little problem that I hope is just a dumb user error. It looks like some sort of a size limit with a query to a SQLite database. I managed to reproduce the issue with an in-memory DB and a simple script shown below. I can make it work by either reducing the number of records in the DB; or by reducing the size of each record; or by dropping the order_by() call. I am using Python 2.5.5 and SQLAlchemy 0.6.0 in a Cygwin environment. • Team Foundation Server Setup/Access

  What I need: A TFS 2010 Setup that allows 2 application developers to access the TFS from remote locations. How it is setup: Server 2008 Standard 2g Ram 300g HD space SharePoint Server 2007, using SQL Server 2005 SQL Server 2008 Standard Team Foundation Server 2010 IIS 7 Sharepoint Bindings: TFS.DynAccount.Me:80; TFS:80 TFS Bindings: TFS.DynAccount.Me:8080; TFS:8080 Using DynDNS service to account for the dynamic ip address being used, this is a requirement for the moment until I can get a better isp package. Access using Local Accounts Server is not setup on a domain, or as a domain. Consequently I did not setup AD services. Problem: When logged into TFS using my credentials TFS\AdminUser through the DynDNS account TFS.DynAccount.Me I recieve the 'Red X of Death' on the Documents and Reports folder. When logged into the TFS through the local peer to peer network using the same credentials TFS\AdminUser I do not receive the 'Red X of Death' problem. Further Troubleshooting: When users 'Right Click' the 'TeamProject1' Click 'Show Project Portal' it tries to take them to http://TFS:8080 instead of http://TFS.DynAccount.Me:8080, which doing further research I am assuming that it is because team foundation server was setup with a local name of TFS instead of 'TFS.DynAccount.Me' as specified here in Visual Studio Magazines: The Red X of Death. Users can Access the Team Portal for SharePoint via http://TFS.DynAccount.Me/TeamCollection/TeamProject so it is not like we are dead in the water or anything. However, as most employees/staff are prone to do, they have expressed a great distaste for having to do it this way and just be patient until the current project is finished since we are under a very strict deadline. Is there a way to set this up differently, or change some settings someplace, reinstall it, point a CName record for our domain website to the DynAccount (e.g. TFS.OurDomain.com points to TFS.DynAccount.Me, which consequently does allow access to the http site without issues), or something. I really don't feel like after all the time and effort I have spent into, first the cost, second the bloody install, third learning SharePoint well enough, fourth the hours into days spent on this, fifth more troubleshooting, sixth employee headaches to just let it lay where it is at. I figure in my spare/off time I would keep trying to get this to work. So I really appreciate any help any one can give me. I know this is probably something really stupid simple that I will 'Face Palm' over, but at the moment the stress and frustration just has me beat. • ASP.NET Web Service Throws 401 (unauthorized) Error

  Hi Experts, I have this .NET application to be run in an intranet environment. It is configured so that it requires Windows Authentication before you can access the website (Anonymous access is disabled). This website calls a web service (enable anonymous access) and the web service calls the DB. We do have a token-based authentication between the web application and the web service to secure the communication between them. The issue I'm facing is that when I deploy this to production, I'm having an intermittent issue whereby the communication between the web application and the web service failed. The 401 issue was thrown. This is actually working fine in our QA environment. Is this an issue with Active Directory? Or could it be an isssue with FQDN as mentioned here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;896861? The weirdest thing is that this is happening intermittently when tested in both on the server itself and a remote workstation in my client's environment. But, this is working perfectly in my environment. OS: Windows Server SP1 IIS 6 .NET 3.5 Framework Any idea about the 401 (Unauthorized) issue?? Thx for the help... This is from the log...   I am trying to select rows from a table where one of the (NVARCHAR) columns is within a numeric range. SELECT ID, Value FROM Data WHERE ISNUMERIC(Value) = 1 AND CONVERT(FLOAT, Value) < 66.6 Unfortunately as part of the SQL spec the AND clauses don't have to short circuit (and don't on MSSQL Server EE 2008). More info: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/789231/is-the-sql-where-clause-short-circuit-evaluated My next attempt was to try this to see if I could achieve delayed evaluation of the CONVERT SELECT ID, Value FROM Data WHERE (CASE WHEN ISNUMERIC(Value) = 1 THEN CONVERT(FLOAT, Value) < 66.6 ELSE 0 END) but I cannot seem to use a < (or any comparison) with the result of a CONVERT. It fails with the error Incorrect syntax near '<'. I can get away with SELECT ID, CONVERT(FLOAT, Value) AS Value FROM Data WHERE ISNUMERIC(Value) = 1 So the obvious solution is to wrap the whole select statement in another SELECT and WHERE and return the converted values from the inner select and filter in there where of the outer select. Unfortunately this is where my Linq-to-sql problem comes in. I am filtering not only by one range but potentialy by many, or just by the existance of the record (there are some date range selects and comparisons I've left out.) Essentially I would like to be able to generate something like this: SELECT ID, TypeID, Value FROM Data WHERE (TypeID = 4 AND ISNUMERIC(Value) AND CONVERT(Float, Value) < 66.6) OR (TypeID = 8 AND ISNUMERIC(Value) AND CONVERT(Float, Value) > 99) OR (TypeID = 9) (With some other clauses in each of those where options.) This clearly doesn't work if I filter out the non-ISNUMERIC values in an inner select. As I mentioned I am using Linq-to-sql (and PredicateBulider) to build up these queries but unfortunately Datas.Where(x => ISNUMERIC(x.Value) ? Convert.ToDouble(x.Value) < 66.6 : false) Gets converted to this which fails the initial problem. WHERE (ISNUMERIC([t0].[Value]) = 1) AND ((CONVERT(Float,[t0].[Value])) < @p0) My last resort will have to be to outer join against a double select on the same table for each of the comparisons but this isn't really an idea solution. I was wondering if anyone has run into similar issues before?

  I'm trying to add weights to search terms I'm using to filter a queryset. Using the '%' wildcard is causing me some problems. I'm using the extra() modifier to add a weight parameter to the queryset, which I will be using to inform a sort ordering. (for example, if 'term' = 'Jon', an entry with first_name='Jon' gets a weight of 2 but an entry with an entry with first_name = 'Jonathan' gets a weight of 1.) I can test the statement in SQL and it seems to work well enough. • Opinions on sensor / reading / alert database design

  I've asked a few questions lately regarding database design, probably too many ;-) However I beleive I'm slowly getting to the heart of the matter with my design and am slowly boiling it down. I'm still wrestling with a couple of decisions regarding how "alerts" are stored in the database. In this system, an alert is an entity that must be acknowledged, acted upon, etc. Initially I related readings to alerts like this (very cut down) : - [Location] LocationId [Sensor] SensorId LocationId UpperLimitValue LowerLimitValue [SensorReading] SensorReadingId Value Status Timestamp [SensorAlert] SensorAlertId [SensorAlertReading] SensorAlertId SensorReadingId The last table is associating readings with the alert, because it is the reading that dictate that the sensor is in alert or not. The problem with this design is that it allows readings from many sensors to be associated with a single alert - whereas each alert is for a single sensor only and should only have readings for that sensor associated with it (should I be bothered that the DB allows this though?). I thought to simplify things, why even bother with the SensorAlertReading table? Instead I could do this: [Location] LocationId [Sensor] SensorId LocationId [SensorReading] SensorReadingId SensorId Value Status Timestamp [SensorAlert] SensorAlertId SensorId Timestamp [SensorAlertEnd] SensorAlertId Timestamp Basically I'm not associating readings with the alert now - instead I just know that an alert was active between a start and end time for a particular sensor, and if I want to look up the readings for that alert I can do. Obviously the downside is I no longer have any constraint stopping me deleting readings that occurred during the alert, but I'm not sure that the constraint is neccessary. Now looking in from the outside as a developer / DBA, would that make you want to be sick or does it seem reasonable? Is there perhaps another way of doing this that I may be missing? Thanks. EDIT: Here's another idea - it works in a different way. It stores each sensor state change, going from normal to alert in a table, and then readings are simply associated with a particular state. This seems to solve all the problems - what d'ya think? (the only thing I'm not sure about is calling the table "SensorState", I can't help think there's a better name (maybe SensorReadingGroup?) : - [Location] LocationId [Sensor] SensorId LocationId [SensorState] SensorStateId SensorId Timestamp Status IsInAlert [SensorReading] SensorReadingId SensorStateId Value Timestamp There must be an elegant solution to this!
