• Cannot install XML::LibXML module on Windows

  I am trying to use XPath to extract some HTML tags and data and for that I need to use XML::LibXML module. I tried installing it from CPAN shell but it doesn't install. I followed the instructions from CPAN site about the installation, that we need to install libxml2, iconv and zlib wrappers before installing XML::LibXML and it didn't work out. Also, if there is any other simpler module that gets my task done, please let me know. The task at hand: I am searching for a specific <dd> tag on a html page which is really big ( around 5000 - 10000) <dd> and <dt> tags. So, I am writing a script which matches the content within <dd> tag and fetches the content within the corresponding (next) <dt> tag. I wish i could i have been a little more clearer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Product Catalog Schema design

  I'm building a proof of concept schema for a product catalog to possibly replace a very aging and crufty one we use. In our business, we sell both physical materials and services (one time and reoccurring charges). The current catalog schema has each distinct category broken out into individual tables, while this is nicely normalized and performs well, it is fairly difficult to extend. Adding a new attribute to a particular product involves changing the table schema and backpopulating old data. An idea I've been toying with has been something along the line of a base set of entity tables in 3rd normal form, these will contain the facts that are common among ALL products. Then, I'd like to build an Attribute-Entity-Value schema that allows each entity type to be extended in a flexible way using just data and no schema changes. Finally, I'd like to denormalize this data model into materialized views for each individual entity type. This views are what the application would access. We also have many tables that contain business rules and compatibility rules. These would join against the base entity tables instead of the views. My big concerns here are: Performance - Attribute-Entity-Value schemas are flexible, but typically perform poorly, should I be concerned? More Performance - Denormalizing using materialized views may have some risks, I'm not positive on this yet. Complexity - While this schema is flexible and maintainable using just data, I worry that the complexity of the design might make future schema changes difficult. For those who have designed product catalogs for large scale enterprises, am I going down the totally wrong path? Is there any good best practice schema design reading available for product catalogs?

I can successfully save concrete Widget implementations e.g. "TwitterWidget". However, I have a problem retrieving all widgets (or rather ALL widget implementations). My repository exposes the following: public IQueryable<Widget> GetAll(); This effectively returns the IDbSet from the DbContext. • Job Opportunities

  I have a few questions about my job opportunities and I appreaciate it if people could give me some feedback on what I should have in front of me. I am graduatating from a University of Wisconsin--La Crosse this December with a degree in CS and a math minor. I have a cumulative GPA of 3.84 and a major GPA of 4.0 right now (though I still have many classes in front of me). I already have a degree from the U of Minnesota (History, 3.69 GPA) and have worked in the business world for 3+ years (working for a small company in the baseball world, doing some computer programming, statistical research, operations work, technical writing, etc.) I know Java and C well, also am comfortable with Perl. I should have a good grasp of SQL by graduation. I am looking to get a nice programming job (and will be open to moving). Anyone have any advice on things I should learn etc? Also, I would like to know what everyone thinks about my chances of landing a decent job (I realize that is subjective). Also, any ideas on salary I should be looking for (say I am working a metropolitan area). Thanks.

• django shopping cart as a beginner

  Hi, i'm quite new to django and trying to add a shopping cart to a simple webshop. What I need is a simple cart that can be filled and presents its content, which is then sent to the vendor via email. So Satchmo might be too big for this task. Therefore i chose django-cart (http://code.google.com/p/django-cart/) which causes some problems now. 1. Is django-cart the right thing? Or are there any better approaches to this task? 2. As I am a beginner even django-cart makes me struggle. I used the view and the template of the django-cart-website, but writing a form that can be used to add products to the cart took me hours. I probably need help in understanding the general layout of a shopping cart and its integration into a website. 3. Two more specific questions: Is it possible to dynamically populate a formfield in a template (e.g. with {{ object.id }})? Is django-cart able to change (update) the contents of a cart? • pylons on production server fedora 8

  I'm interested in learning some python, and thought Pylons would be a good starting point (after spending 2 days trying to get django working -- to no avail). I have an Amazon EC2 instance with Fedora 8 on it. It is a bare-bones install. I am halfway through my second day of trying to get it to work. I have mod_wsgi installed. I have Apache (though that's a later task to tackle). I have easy_install, paster is working fine; basically all of the pre-requisites mentioned throughout the Pylons docs. I can't for the life of me get the thing to work. And I can't seem to find a coherent walkthough anywhere that lists all the steps necessary. There is tons of info out there, but it is all scattered. Wsgi this, python that. Google, google, google... "47 million results found for 'socket.error:(lol, 'Yous a goofs')". So, this is my latest attempt: apachectl -k stop cd /home/ paster create -t pylons test [blah blah.. ok] cd test nano development.ini [hmm, last time I changed the host from 127.0.0.1 to my domain name or url, it threw an error like socket.error: (99, 'Cannot assign requested address')... I'll just leave it] [open port 5000 on firewall] paster serve development.ini [firefox-url:5000] Firefox can't establish a connection to the server Doing these steps locally works as expected. This is just a test to see if I can get it to work at all, which I can't. If I get it to work, then is the task of getting it to work with apache. My madness is that I'd like to play around a little developing and deploying before diving into a full-fledged project. So far: self, I am dissapoint.

• Automate the signature of the update.rdf manifest for my firefox extension

  Hello, I'm developing a firefox extension and I'd like to provide automatic update to my beta-testers (who are not tech-savvy). Unfortunately, the update server doesn't provide HTTPS. According to the Extension Developer Guide on signing updates, I have to sign my update.rdf and provide an encoded public key in the install.rdf. There is the McCoy tool to do all of this, but it is an interactive GUI tool and I'd like to automate the extension packaging using an Ant script (as this is part of a much bigger process). I can't find a more precise description of what's happening to sign the update.rdf manifest than below, and McCoy source is an awful lot of javascript. The doc says: The add-on author creates a public/private RSA cryptographic key pair. The public part of the key is DER encoded and then base 64 encoded and added to the add-on's install.rdf as an updateKey entry. (...) Roughly speaking the update information is converted to a string, then hashed using a sha512 hashing algorithm and this hash is signed using the private key. The resultant data is DER encoded then base 64 encoded for inclusion in the update.rdf as an signature entry. I don't know well about DER encoding, but it seems like it needs some parameters. So would anyone know either the full algortihm to sign the update.rdf and install.rdf using a predefined keypair, or a scriptable alternative to McCoy whether a command-line tool like asn1coding will suffise a good/simple developer tutorial on DER encoding

  Hello, I have a web page that has a textarea defined on it like so: <textarea id="myTextArea" rows="6" cols="75"></textarea> There is a chance that a user may enter single and double quotes in this field. For instance, I have been testing with the following string: Just testin' using single and double "quotes". I'm hoping the end of this task is comin'. Additionally, the user may enter HTML code, which I would prefer to prevent. Regardless, I am passing the contents of this textarea onto web service. I must encode the contents of the textarea in JavaScript before I can send it on. Currently, I'm trying the following: var contents $('<div/>').text($("#myTextArea).val()).html(); alert(contents); I was expecting contents to display Just testin&#39; using single and double &#34;quotes&#34;. I&#39;m hoping the end of this task is comin&#39;. Instead, the original string is printed out. Beyond just double-and-single quotes, there are a variety of entities to consider. Because of this, I was assuming there would be a way to encode HTML before passing it on. Can someone please tell me how to do this? Thank you,

• WinForms and ShowDialog problem.

  I have a borderless WinForms app. The main window creates other forms (simple dialogs where I can click yes or no) with ShowDialog(). Every created dialog is not visible in the taskbar, my app has only one taskbar entry that focuses my app (and if a dialog is open that one is focused). If I use ALT+TAB to cycle to all open windows I only see one entry, too. However, If the dialog is created while my app doesn't have the focus (for example the user starts a long running task, starts to work on something else and while being in the background, my app shows a dialog "Task done...") and I want to go back to my app, things are getting strange. If I click on the taskbar to focus my app, the main window is focused (not the dialog). I can't use the main window (because there is still an open modal dialog). Windows 7 ALT-TAB preview shows the Dialog while taskbar mouseover preview shows the main window (In normal behavior both show the dialog in front of the main window). The only way to make my app usable again is to ALT-TAB to the entry and close the modal dialog. If I use ALT-TAB only the dialog is brought to the front and the main window is still in the background Is there a way to prevent that from happening? I know what to do, but most customers think the app crashed since the main window doesn't respond.

• How to create a rails habtm that deletes/destroys without error?

  I created a simple example as a sanity check and still can not seem to destroy an item on either side of a has_and_belongs_to_many relationship in rails. Whenever I try to delete an object from either table, I get the dreaded NameError / "uninitialized constant" error message. To demonstrate, I created a sample rails app with a Boy class and Dog class. I used the basic scaffold for each and created a linking table called boys_dogs. • Implementing IDisposable on a subclass when the parent also implements IDisposable

  I have a parent and child class that both need to implement IDisposable. Where should virtual (and base.Dispose()?) calls come into play? When I just override the Dispose(bool disposing) call, it feels really strange stating that I implement IDisposable without having an explicit Dispose() function (just utilizing the inherited one), but having everything else. • Replacing/Extending Visual Studio's Generate Stub in Visual Studio 2010

  When we write the name of a method that doesn't exist, Visual Studio 2010 asks us if we'd like to generate a method stub with that name. What I'd like to know if is it possible to replace that same code stub generating command with one made by myself. I never did any kind of extensibility programming for Visual Studio so I have a couple of questions: How hard is it? Is it something I can learn in a couple of nights, or is it something that'll make me "lose" a lot of time? It seems to me that there isn't a lot of support for that kind of programming, as generally people are not that interested in developing solutions that extend the Visual Studio IDE. I searched on SO and it doesn't appear to have many threads about extending Visual Studio. I don't know how the generate method stub thing works in Visual Studio, but I just wanted to turn it into something a bit more flexible and useful. Has anyone dealt with these kind of things before, that can give me a pointer to where to start? I know of MS VSX site but that has a lot of resources and can be overwhelming for someone new to the subject as I am. What technology will I need to use? T4? Maybe I'll need to know a lot about the code, like Visual Studio does, so I can know other method's type arguments, names, etc. Is that what T4 is for? Thanks

• MSBuild - Writing Escape Characters to Files

  I've got a very similar scenario to the one described in this post. It describes how to load the contents of a file that contains properties & items, making sure they're resolved as part of the process. I'm doing the same thing except writing the contents away to another text file (generally .ini file). In short I'd start by importing a project / propertygroup which contains this text: ; ----------- [heading] setting1=$(FirstValue) setting2=$(SecondValue) setting3=list;of;values;delimited;by;semicolons setting4=bla bla bla ; ----------- & hopefully write it away to a new .ini file containing the following: ; ----------- [heading] setting1=value resolved by msbuild setting2=another value resolved by msbuild setting3=list;of;values;delimited;by;semicolons setting4=bla bla bla ; ----------- Only problem is that some files will contain semicolons. I can live without comments, but they're also used as part of values e.g. in lists. This is the result of using the WriteLinesToFile task. The semicolons are treated as escape characters & result in new lines, so the value of 'setting3' in the above example would be split over 6 lines. Is there a way around this without implementing my own task? Thanks in advance for the help!

• How can I store HTML in a Doctrine YML fixture

  I am working with a CMS-type site in Symfony 1.4 (Doctrine 1.2) and one of the things that is frustrating me is not being able to store HTML pages in YML fixtures. Instead I have to create SQL backups of the data if I want to drop and rebuild which is a bit of a pest when Symfony/Doctrine has a fantastic mechanism for doing exactly this. I could write a mechanism that reads in a set of HTML files for each page and fills the data in that way (or even write it as a task). But before I go down that road I am wondering if there is any way for HTML to be stored in a YML fixture so that Doctrine can simply import it into the database. Update: I have tried using symfony doctrine:data-dump and symfony doctrine:data-load however despite the dump correctly creating the fixture with the HTML, the load task appears to 'skip' the value of the column with the HTML and enters everything else into the row. In the database the field doesn't show up as 'NULL' but rather empty so I believe Doctrine is adding the value of the column as ''. Below is a sample of the YML fixture that symfony doctrine:data-dump created. I have tried running symfony doctrine:data-load against various forms of this including removing all the escaped characters (new lines and quotes leaving only angle brackets) but it still doesn't work.   I'm trying to code ASP.NET MVC views (WebForms view engine) in F#. I can already write regular ASP.NET WebForms ASPX and it works ok, e.g. <%@ Page Language="F#" %> <% for i in 1..2 do %> <%=sprintf "%d" i %> so I assume I have everything in my web.config correctly set up. However, when I make the page inherit from ViewPage: <%@ Page Language="F#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage" %> I get this error: Compiler Error Message: FS0442: Duplicate method. The abstract method 'ProcessRequest' has the same name and signature as an abstract method in an inherited type. The problem seems to be this piece of code generated by the F# CodeDom provider: [<System.Diagnostics.DebuggerNonUserCodeAttribute>] abstract ProcessRequest : System.Web.HttpContext -> unit [<System.Diagnostics.DebuggerNonUserCodeAttribute>] default this.ProcessRequest (context:System.Web.HttpContext) = let mutable context = context base.ProcessRequest(context) |> ignore when I change the Page directive to use C# instead, the generated code is: [System.Diagnostics.DebuggerNonUserCodeAttribute()] public new virtual void ProcessRequest(System.Web.HttpContext context) { base.ProcessRequest(context); } which of course works fine and AFAIK is not semantically the same as the generated F# code. • Open Source CMS (.Net vs Java)

  I must say up-front that this is not a strictly programming-related question and a very opinionated one. I am the lead developer of the dominant .Net CMS in my country and I don't like my own product :). Managerial decisions over what is important or not and large chunks of legacy code done before I joined gives me headache every day I go for work. Anyway, having a vast amount of experience in web industry and a very good grasp of C# and programming practices I'm designing my own CMS the past few months. Now the problem is that I'm an open source kinda guy so I have a dilemma. Should I use C# and .Net which has crippled multi-platform support or should I drop .Net entirely and start learning Java where I can create a truly open-source and cross-platform CMS? Please don't answer that I should contribute to an existing open source CMS. I ruled that out after spending a great deal of time searching for something similar in structure to what I have in mind. I am not a native speaker, so feel free to correct my syntax or rephrase my question.

• RHEL 5.3 Kickstart - How specify location of individual package in Workstation folder?

  I keep getting "package does not exist" errors during the install. I made a kickstart ISO to create an unattended install of a RHEL 5.3 build machine for C++ software releases. It pulls the kickstart config file from our internal web server. This is handy; it makes it easy to test and modify without having to make a new ISO. And I plan to check it in to version control if I can get it working. Anyway, the rpm packages are located in two folders on the disk; Client and Workstation. The packages install fine for the ones that are physically located under the Client folder. It cannot find those under the Workstation folder such as as doxygen and subversion complaining that packages do not exist. • Flexible Decorator Pattern?

  I was looking for a pattern to model something I'm thinking of doing in a personal project and I was wondering if a modified version of the decorator patter would work. Basicly I'm thinking of creating a game where the characters attributes are modified by what items they have equiped. The way that the decorator stacks it's modifications is perfect for this, however I've never seen a decorator that allows you to drop intermediate decorators, which is what would happen when items are unequiped. Does anyone have experience using the decorator pattern in this way? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? Clarification To explain "Intermediate decorators" if for example my base class is coffe which is decorated with milk which is decorated with sugar (using the example in Head first design patterns) milk would be an intermediate decorator as it decorates the base coffee, and is decorated by the sugar. Yet More Clarification :) The idea is that items change stats, I'd agree that I am shoehorning the decorator into this. I'll look into the state bag. essentially I want a single point of call for the statistics and for them to go up/down when items are equiped/unequiped. I could just apply the modifiers to the characters stats on equiping and roll them back when unequiping. Or whenever a stat is asked for iterate through all the items and calculate the stat. I'm just looking for feedback here, I'm aware that I might be using a chainsaw where scissors would be more appropriate...

• Organizing code, logical layout of segmented files

  I have known enough about programming to get me in trouble for about 10 years now. I have no formal education, though I've read many books on the subject for various languages. The language I am primarily focused on now would be php, atleast for the scale of things I am doing now. I have used some OOP classes for a while, but never took the dive into understanding principals behind the scenes. I am still not at the level I would like to be expression-wise...however my recent reading into a book titled The OOP Thought Process has me wanting to advance my programming skills. With motivation from the new concepts, I have started with a new project that I've coded some re-usable classes that deal with user auth, user profiles, database interfacing, and some other stuff I use regularly on most projects. Now having split my typical garbled spaghetti bowl mess of code into somewhat organized files, I've come into some problems when it comes to making sure files are all included when they need to be, and how to logically divide the scripts up into classes, aswell as how segmented I should be making each class. I guess I have rambled on enough about much of nothing, but what I am really asking for is advise from people, or suggested reading that focuses not on specific functions and formats of code, but the logical layout of projects that are larger than just a hobby project. I want to learn how to do things proper, and while I am still learning in some areas, this is something that I have no clue about other than just being creative, and trial/error. Mostly error. Thanks for any replies. This place is great.

  Question Alright, I'm confused by all the buzzwords and press release bingo going on. What is the relationship between flash and flex: Replace flash (not really compatible) Enhance flash The next version of flash but still basically compatible Separate technology altogether ??? If I'm starting out in Flash now, should I just skip to Flex? Follow up Ok, so what I'm hearing is that there's three different parts to the puzzle: Flash The graphical editor used to make "Flash Movies", ie it's an IDE that focuses on the visual aspect of "Flash" (Officially Flash CS3?) The official name for the display plugins (ie, "Download Flash Now!") A general reference to the entire technology stack In terms of the editor, it's a linear timeline based editor, best used for animations with complex interactivity. Actionscript The "Flash" programming language Flex An Adobe Flash IDE that focuses on the coding/programming aspect of "Flash" (Flex Builder?) A Flash library that enhances Flash and makes it easier to program for (Flex SDK?) Is not bound to a timeline (as the Flash IDE is) and so "standard" applications are more easily accomplished. Is this correct?

• Including variables inside curly braces in a Zend config ini file on Linux

  I am trying to include a variable in a .ini file setting by surrounding it with curly braces, and Zend is complaining that it cannot parse it properly on Linux. It works properly on Windows, though: welcome_message = Welcome, {0}.
