  • Is there an easy way to (temporarily) disable the display timeout?

    - by Izzy
In KDE 3.5 there was the powermanager plugin for the kicker panel, where one could easily switch between different profiles. So normally, I want the display to go to sleep after, say, 10 minutes of user inactivity. But when I watch a video, this should not happen. I know I could go via the KDE launcher, settings, powermanager, and change the setting. But this is too complicated for daily use. I also know there are those activities. But I don't want to change background etc., just the display timeout. Furthermore, when I tried this, many of the open apps simply crashed and got restarted. I simply don't like this approach. Preferably, it would be something to plug-in to the panel, which opens a menu to select the profile -- as it was with KDE 3.5. Is there a similar solution I missed?

After i changed my WordPress theme , rankings of those posts dropped dramatically .I had accidentally kept the theme's inbuilt SEO modules enabled along with the yoast plugin . Now , i've disabled the theme's inbuilt SEO modules . When checked the html of one of my posts with the theme's inbuilt SEO modules enabled , i discovered duplicate meta description tags in which one tag had the blogs description and the other tag had the posts description. Was it the reason for the drop in rankings or there are some other reasons? • Take Camera Phone Macro Photos with a Cheap Laser Pointer Lens

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Inside those cheap laser pointers you see in the grocery store checkout line there’s a handy little plastic lens that, when slapped on your phone’s camera, makes it easy to take macro photographs. In this tutorial, they take the lens from a laser point and secure it using tape and a bobby pin. An alternative method to achieve the same end (and with a higher quality lens) is to dismantle a CD/DVD drive to source the lens and use painter’s tape to hold the lens in place–this is the technique I used several years ago, check out the tutorial video here. - by HappyDeveloper
I want to install and test 3d acceleration in Ubuntu 12. I tried to play minecraft in the browser, but I got a black screen. It may be a java problem too, so I need to troubleshoot. So how can I test my video card and drivers?

  • Fix hibernate on Thinkpad X60 with 12.04 Precise Pangolin

    - by ddaa
I own a ThinkPad X60, hibernate used to work on 10.04 Lucid Lynx, but no longer works correctly on 12.04. I am aware of how to enable hibernate in Power Manager. The problem here is, in the default configuration, pm-hibernate works, but the system fails to resume correctly. There is no video glitch, black screen or other. The resume process just freezes on the Ubuntu splash boot after a few seconds of disk activity. Is there a way to fix the system configuration so hibernates works again?

  • How to handle a Tile Map Scrolling [duplicate]

    - by DGomez
This question already has an answer here: Implementing a camera / viewport to a 2D game 1 answer i'm making a video game, and i'm having, i think, a concept problem. The game will be a platformer which will use tile maps, so to start i will create a mask matrix indicating the tiles to be loaded, and etc..., so my problem is, how to handle the scrolling? should i create a giant mask matrix indicating in each position of the whole level what is supposed to be loaded, and according to the position of the player, change the section to be drawed?? Is this a correct approach to this situation??

  • Hurricane Season 2010 Starts

    - by Mark Treadwell
Here we are at the start of another hurricane season.  As with past years, I have been preparing.  Last year I had the house painted with a high-quality paint, giving the stucco its best waterproofing possible.  I have a few cracks to patch with elastomeric patching material.  I will paint it to match the house later.  I also need to clean out the anchors for the lower angle brackets and reattach them.  I had removed the brackets for painting. You can read all my past hurricane entries here.  The predictors are promising a busy season.  We have heard that one before, so I put little credence in long range press releases.  Other than that we are pretty much ready.  I have a few new plans I will blog about later, but for now we get to listen to our daily thunderstorms outside.

  • Can I copy large files faster without using the file cache?

    - by Veazer
After adding the preload package, my applications seem to speed up but if I copy a large file, the file cache grows by more than double the size of the file. By transferring a single 3-4 GB virtualbox image or video file to an external drive, this huge cache seems to remove all the preloaded applications from memory, leading to increased load times and general performance drops. Is there a way to copy large, multi-gigabyte files without caching them (i.e. bypassing the file cache)? Or a way to whitelist or blacklist specific folders from being cached?

  • Examples of Android Joystick Controls? [on hold]

    - by KRB
I can't seem to find any well executed code examples for Android joystick controls. Whatever it may be, algorithms, pseudo code, actual code examples, strategies, or anything to assist with the design and implementation of Android joystick controls; I can't seem to find anything decent on the net. What are some well executed examples? More specifically, Pseudo Code Current Examples Idea/Design Functionality Description Controller Hints Related Directly to Android Architecture What kind of classes will I have making this? Will there be only one? How would this be implemented to the game architecture? All things I am thinking about. Cheers! UPDATE I've found this on the subject Joystick Example1, though I am still looking for different examples/resources. Answered my own question with a link to the code of the above video. It's a fantastic start to Android Joystick Controls.

  • Are Intel HD 4000 graphics supported on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?

    - by user1118764
I have an intel Core i7-3700 system with Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics with a dual monitor setup (1 connected via VGA, the other via DVI) on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit. I'm trying to get my monitors correctly detected. Right now, in only 1 unknown monitor is detected with a max resolution of 1280x1024, which is lower than my main monitor connected to DVI. Also, the desktop is mirrored rather than extended. I've previously managed to get a Core i5-2400 system with Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics with the same dual monitor setup and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit to work using the glasen ppa drivers, but this time, after installing them following the instructions How do I install the Intel HD 3000 video driver? but it doesn't seem to work. Does the Intel HD 4000 require a different driver from the 3000? If so, where can I get it?

  • Stuck on Ubuntu Startup Screen

    - by Pietro
Since yesterday, my system won't get past the startup screen (the Ubuntu logo with the blinking red dots). I left it for over an hour and didn't get the login screen. It was working normally before that and I don't recall any changes (no new software, etc). I can login through the terminal with ALT+F1 but I don't know what to do to get the graphic mode. The command startx fails. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 64 bits on a Core I5 with Intel motherboard. No video card or sound card.

  • SharePoint Search Problem: The crawler could not communicate with the server.

    - by Clara Oscura
This one was not easy to solve ... Error: The crawler could not communicate with the server. Check that the server is available and that the firewall access is configured. Context: Some pages were not crawled (giving the above error) and, what is worse, all the sub content of that site was not crawled either! (the pages were the homepages of the site) Solution:The pages that could not be crawled due to this error contained a custom web part. This web part used default credentials for a given action. During crawling, the SP_Search account tried to perform this action but did not have the appropriate rights. This gave an error that stopped the crawling for the whole site. This blog helped me: http://patricklamber.blogspot.com/2010/04/why-might-moss-crawler-not-working.html

  • Finding the displacment of a robot [closed]

    - by Jordan Brown
I'm building a quadruped (4 legs 3 DOF) for my major work in electronics at high school. I need to know the displacement of the robot and I can't use an encoding wheel. I've done my research and I found a system where I use an accelerometer, gyroscope and a magnetometer to determine the displacement but I'm not sure how to code it. I'm using Arduino and will use compatible sensors. I would like to be able to implement something similar to this video which demonstrates the principles evaluated in this paper. I don't need to map the data on a screen, just be able to read its displacement from its last recorded position. EG. (Read Position) --- (Do "stuff") --- (Read Position) --- (Calculate displacement caused by "stuff")
