  • Examples of both beautiful and ugly java code?

    - by tputkonen
I would like to demonstrate how difficult it is for a layman to identify high quality code from flawed code. I'm thinking of doing this with the help of two java methods. Both of the methods should look like they do the same, pretty simple thing. However one of them should have several kind of flaws, for example: iteration with array off by one error string concatenations causing lots of objects to be created (as opposed to StringBuffer in the "good" code, which looks more complicated) possibly null pointer exception (but it should not be trivial to spot) Those are just some examples, all kinds of other issues including bugs and performance related structures are highly appreciated. Methods should be around 10-20 lines of length, and the task they do should be something simple - preferably printing something in an iteration.

  • Creating a blocked user intercepter in Grails

    - by UltraVi01
I am working on a social site where users can block other users. Throughout the site --dozens of places, user information is displayed. For example, user comments, reply forms, online user list.. etc etc.. The problem is that given the high number of places user info is displayed, it's becoming very difficult to check each time if that user is blocked. For example: <g:each var="comment" in="${comments}"> <g:if test="!${loggedInUser.blockedUsers.find { it == comment.user}"> show comment </g:if> </g:each> Does Grails provide any functionality that would facilitate creating some kind of filter or intercepter where I could simply exclude blocked users when iterating lists, etc? If not, what would you suggest I do?

  • Java: Allowing the child thread to kill itself on InterruptedException?

    - by Zombies
    I am using a ThreadPool via ExecutorService. By calling shutDownNow() it interrupts all running threads in the pool. When this happens I want these threads to give up their resources (socket and db connections) and simply die, but without continuing to run anymore logic, eg: inserting anything into the DB. What is the simplest way to achieve this? Bellow is some sample code: public void threadTest() { Thread t = new Thread(new Runnable() { public void run() { try { Thread.sleep(999999); } catch (InterruptedException e) { //invoke thread suicide logic here } } }); t.start(); t.interrupt(); try { Thread.sleep(4000); } catch (InterruptedException e) { } }

  • efficient video format/codec for sparse & binary blob tracking

    - by user391339
I am working on a blob tracking project and have many high-definition videos that I would like to reduce in size for storage and downstream tracking/shape-analysis. I want to use a lossless method that takes advantage of the black and white nature of the video as well as the fact that not much is moving between individual frames. The videos are quite sparse, with 5 to 10 b&w blobs per frame occupying <30% of the space in total, with each blob moving <5-10% of the field of view between frames and not changing shape too much between 2-3 frames. I will work in Python, Matlab, or LabView for this project, and could use a batch utility if available. It may be worthwhile to export the files as compressed image stacks if a proper video format can't be found. What are the pros and cons of this? A video codec uses correlations between neighboring frames, so it should be more efficient, but not if the wrong one is chosen or if it is improperly configured.

  • Force close Android application Phone.apk in landscape mode

    - by user1277086
Standard Android application Phone.apk with an outgoing call on the tenth of a second can use the landscape screen mode, but if you make a modification of graphic resources, in landscape mode the phone is closed with an error, Eclipse shows it - E / AndroidRuntime (2888): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start activity ComponentInfo {com.android.phone / com.android.phone.InCallScreen}: java.lang.ClassCastException: android.view.AbsSavedState $ 1. I tried to set the AndroidManifest.xml setting [android: screenOrientation = "portrait"] of the article "Force an android activity to always use landscape mode" - the application falls. What can I try to do more? I tried to add a variable to a string android:screenOrientation="portrait" in decompiled Phone.apk on the and

  • Blob ID matching over multiple frames in C++ (image analysis)

    - by pollux
Dear reader, I'm working on a blob matching and tracking library in C++. Currently I'm using openCV to detect blobs and try to match blobs in a new frame by checking the position, velocity and size of the blob. This works quite okay and I'm receiving a high blob match rate (95% or higher). Sometimes blobs fall out of the image or new blobs appear. Now I need to give matched blobs the same ID as they had before. I'm wondering if there are typical or commonly used techniques for doing this. Or even some keywords I can use to google on. Thanks

  • Clojure for a lisp illiterate

    - by dbyrne
I am a lifelong object-oriented programmer. My job is primarily java development, but I have experience in a number of languages. Ruby gave me my first real taste of functional programming. I loved the features Ruby borrowed from the functional paradigm such as closures and continuations. Eventually, I graduated to Scala. This has been a great way to gradually learn to approach non-trivial problems in a functional manner. Now I am interested in Clojure. I know all the sexy features that make it enticing (software transactional memory, macros, etc.), but I just can't get used to "thinking in lisp". I've seen Rich Hickey's screencasts aimed at java programmers, but they are geared towards explaining language features and not approaching real world problems. I am looking for any advice or resources which have made this transition easier for others.

  • Use of bit-torrent for large file download as an alternative to FTP

    - by questzen
The company I work for procures large volumes of data and does this by subscribing to FTP locations. I was wondering if it is possible to download the same using a tracker, the major challenge is authentication of the users IMO. Most ftp servers we subscribe to have a restriction of the number of ftp connection attempts. Does any one here have any experience with this? Any advice is welcome. Edit To clarify, we subscribe to third party vendors and access their ftp location using credentials provided by them. The service is not exclusive to us, they do sell their data to several others. If we could be part of the swarm, the download rates would be pretty high without added penalty. The question is about the possibility of achieving this, so that we can put-forth a proposal in those lines. The vendors obviously wouldn't share data to non-subscribers, so that is a constraint.

  • Behavior of nested finally in Exceptions

    - by kuriouscoder
Hello: Today at work, I had to review a code snippet that looks similar to this mock example. package test; import java.io.IOException; import org.apache.log4j.Logger; public class ExceptionTester { public static Logger logger = Logger.getLogger(ExceptionTester.class); public void test() throws IOException { new IOException(); } public static void main(String[] args) { ExceptionTester comparator = new ExceptionTester(); try { try { comparator.test(); } finally { System.out.println("Finally 1"); } } catch(IOException ex) { logger.error("Exception happened" ex); // also close opened resources } System.out.println("Exiting out of the program"); } } It's printing the following output.I expected an compile error since the inner try did not have a catch block. Finally 1 Exiting out of the program I do not understand why IOException is caught by the outer catch block. I would appreciate if anyone can explain this, especially by citing stack unwinding process

  • Grails external Jms broker (active mq)

    - by TheBigS
I have what will become an 'external' activemq server I'd like grails to be able to talk to. Right now I am just running it on my dev box. Here is what I have setup right now: 1) Run activemq server 2) Run activemq/examples using ant to produce messages 3) View ActiveMQ admin site: http://localhost:8161/admin/queues.jsp verify that messages are in the queue. 4) Follow Mini Tutorial to create the Service and Controller: http://www.grails.org/ActiveMQ+Plugin 5) Configured my Grails resources.groovy file as follows: beans = { jmsConnectionFactory(SingleConnectionFactory){ targetConnectionFactory = { ActiveMQConnectionFactory cf -> brokerURL = 'tcp://localhost:61616' } } } When I run the grails app I get a BindException saying port 61616 is already in use. How do I configure this to use my server that is already running? I've tried changing 'localhost' to '127.0.0.1' and to my LAN ip, but no luck, it keeps trying to setup its own embedded activemq server. Any ideas?

  • Browser App - RAD UI Development - Is it possible?

    - by Randy Minder
I've been away from building browser applications for a long time. I'm now interested in creating one for a hobby of mine. I dread having to deal with HTML, JavaScript etc. to build a high quality browser based user interface. I've got the full suite of Telerik controls. Is it possible to build a polished, somewhat feature rich browser UI while being sheltered from the archaic environment of HTML and JavaScript? I'd love to be able to simply drag-drop components, much like building a Win UI and have the exact HTML, JavaScript code created for me. Thanks!

  • Why can't I do this from ASP.NET?

    - by Nissan Fan
The code below spawns the process and sits forever, never finishing. It doesn't matter what process I run. Also, if I use Shell with Wait it does the same thing. If I set wait to false in either approach it works just fine. It's ASP.NET 2.0 VB.NET DotNetNuke 4.0 on Windows Server 2003. I can't even phathom why this would hang up. From: http://www.freevbcode.com/ShowCode.asp?ID=5879 Public Sub ShellandWait(ByVal ProcessPath As String) Dim objProcess As System.Diagnostics.Process objProcess = New System.Diagnostics.Process() objProcess.StartInfo.FileName = ProcessPath objProcess.StartInfo.WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Normal objProcess.Start() 'Wait until the process passes back an exit code objProcess.WaitForExit() 'Free resources associated with this process objProcess.Close() End Sub

  • What's the correct way to represent a linear process in CocoaTouch (UIKit)?

    - by UloPe
I need to represent a linear process (think wizard) in an iPad app. In principle I could use a UINavigationController and just keep pushing new controllers for each step of the process. But this seems rather inefficient since the process I'm modeling has no notion of navigating backwards so all previous views would pointlessly stay around and use up resources. At the moment I keep adding and removing a subview to one "master" viewcontroller and basically swapping out the contents. This works but feels rather clunky and I hope there is some nicer way to achieve this. Additionally there needs to be an animated transition between the views. (I have this working at the moment via beginAnimations / commitAnimations)

  • Building Outline Data in Google Maps (Android)

    - by scotty.hoag
I'm working on an Android project that focuses on knowing how close you are to buildings. I wanted to know if there is some way to extract the geographic information about the outlines of buildings out of the Google Maps API. Thanks. • How do I build a DataTemplate in c# code?

    - by Russ
    I am trying to build a dropdown list for a winform interop, and I am building the dropdown in code. However, I am having a problem getting the data to bind based on the DataTemplate I specify. What am I missing? drpCreditCardNumberWpf = new ComboBox(); DataTemplate cardLayout = new DataTemplate {DataType = typeof (CreditCardPayment)}; StackPanel sp = new StackPanel { Orientation = System.Windows.Controls.Orientation.Vertical }; TextBlock cardHolder = new TextBlock {ToolTip = "Card Holder Name"}; cardHolder.SetBinding(TextBlock.TextProperty, "BillToName"); sp.Children.Add(cardHolder); TextBlock cardNumber = new TextBlock {ToolTip = "Credit Card Number"}; cardNumber.SetBinding(TextBlock.TextProperty, "SafeNumber"); sp.Children.Add(cardNumber); TextBlock notes = new TextBlock {ToolTip = "Notes"}; notes.SetBinding(TextBlock.TextProperty, "Notes"); sp.Children.Add(notes); cardLayout.Resources.Add(sp, null); drpCreditCardNumberWpf.ItemTemplate = cardLayout;

  • Anyway to find out the current Windows is in lock mode?

    - by David.Chu.ca
I have a windows application written in VS 2005. The application makes queries against to sql database in a timer cycle every 2 minutes. If there any data changes, the window will be refreshed with new data. If the user leaves the window, the windows will be automatically locked after a while. There is no sense to keep querying data in ever 2 minutes when the windows is locked; therefore I would like to stop the query when lock is on so that the network data trafic will be reduced and also saves the current windows resources such as memory and CPUs. I am not sure if there is any way to find out the current windows is locked? Not sure if there is any Windows APIs for this purpose if no .Net classes available? My project is in .Net 2.0 and all users are in Windows XP.

  • How to structure opening hours of a place? May-be there's even an ontology for it?

    - by Ago
Does anyone know any ontology which specifies opening hours of places? For example, I have a museum, which has 2 seasons. For low season (season start and end is specified), it is opened 10.00 - 18.00 on weekdays and 10-16 on saturday (on sunday it's closed), for high season it's opened 10-20 on weekdays and 10-18 on weekend. If there is no ontology, may-be people have experience, how best to structure information like that? I'm describing information in RDF. But whatever comments are welcome (even if you have relational database which holds given data). Thanks

  • Why do so many mathematicians format code so poorly? [closed]

    - by marcog
I have done a fair amount of programming together with mathematicians. Now I am even teaching some high school kids coming from a mathematics background how to program. Most of these people format their code so hideously it's hard to believe. I've even worked with and taught mathematicians who will fight the auto-indenter! Why is this so common amongst mathematicians? BTW, this is one reason I have started teaching Python. Yet still they find ways other than indentation to produce whacked coding styles!

Problem is, i can't alter in code of this external program, i am even don't aware of it's architecture. I have resources to save whole program to disk from memory, but i need some tips, where to start. I can't use any VM like Virtual Box to save state of whole operating system, and program can be written in c++ or c or c#...

  • Implementation communication protocols in C/C++

    - by MeThinks
I am in the process of starting to implement some proprietary communication protocol stack in software but not sure where to start. It is the kind of work I have not done before and I am looking for help in terms of resources for best/recommended approaches. I will be using c/c++ and I am free to use use libraries (BSD/BOOST/Apache) but no GPL. I have used C++ extensively so using the features of C++ is not a problem. The protocol stack has three layers and it is already fully specified and formally verified. So all I need to do is implemented and test it fully in the specified languages. Should also mention that protocol is very simple but can run on different devices over a reliable physical transport layer Any help with references/recommendations will be appreciated. I am willing to use a different language if only to help me understand how to implement them but I will have to eventually resort to the language of choice.

  • How do I add jars needed to compile a maven project if they were never built with a pom?

    - by JasonH
I'm just starting with maven, coming from years of working with Ant. I'm trying a basic task now, building a simple project that requires some libraries from a vendor. I have the jars in src\main\resources\VENDORNAME. When I run mvn compile it fails on compilation saying the libraries don't exist. I can't seem to add these as dependencies because I don't know their version number and as they are proprietary I can't find them in ibiblio or elsewhere. Without these Jars I can't compile my classes. Is there a way to use jars that didn't follow Maven's convention? I might not understand maven correctly, so any guidance is welcome. Much appreciated for any responses.

  • How do I set font size to 0px in IE6?

    - by Justin808
I have an unordered list, I'm trying to hide the text in the list. I can do this 2 ways that i know of: font-color: transparent; font-size: 0px; I prefer the 0px method as its not selectable. This issue is neither way works in IE6. The first way just doesn't work in IE6 at all, the 2nd leave a 1PX high font. Is there a way to hide the text in IE6? This is a visual thing, I know you can read the text by reading the source and that is OK, I just need it to visually not be there.

I'd like to get started with qpid, can anyone recommend some useful resources/links/code examples for me to study? I'm interested about java implementations?I'd like to create message sender/listener. I've already done messaging with jboss where I send the message to the queue and the listener picks it up from there, what is different with qpid? Is it the same only replacing jboss as a server with qpid or?I'm new to all of this it might sound weird when I ask it. Oh yes similar question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1693099/get-started-with-qpid Doesn't really help me much. Any hints would help me a lot. thank you
