• How do I get spring to inject my EntityManager?

    - by Trampas Kirk
    I'm following the guide here, but when the DAO executes, the EntityManager is null. I've tried a number of fixes I found in the comments on the guide, on various forums, and here (including this), to no avail. No matter what I seem to do the EntityManager remains null. Here are the relevant files, with packages etc changed to protect the innocent. spring-context.xml  <beans xmlns="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:tx="http://www.springframework.org/schema/tx" xmlns:context="http://www.springframework.org/schema/context" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans/spring-beans.xsd http://www.springframework.org/schema/tx http://www.springframework.org/schema/tx/spring-tx.xsd http://www.springframework.org/schema/context http://www.springframework.org/schema/context/spring-context.xsd" xmlns:p="http://www.springframework.org/schema/p"> <context:component-scan base-package="com.group.server"/> <context:annotation-config/> <tx:annotation-driven/> <bean id="propertyPlaceholderConfigurer" class="com.group.DecryptingPropertyPlaceholderConfigurer" p:systemPropertiesModeName="SYSTEM_PROPERTIES_MODE_OVERRIDE"> <property name="locations"> <list> <value>classpath*:spring-*.properties</value> <value>classpath*:${application.environment}.properties</value> </list> </property> </bean> <bean id="orderDao" class="com.package.service.OrderDaoImpl"/> <bean class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.support.PersistenceAnnotationBeanPostProcessor"/> <bean id="entityManagerFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean"> <property name="persistenceUnitName" value="MyServer"/> <property name="loadTimeWeaver"> <bean class="org.springframework.instrument.classloading.InstrumentationLoadTimeWeaver"/> </property> <property name="dataSource" ref="dataSource"/> <property name="jpaVendorAdapter"> <bean class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.vendor.HibernateJpaVendorAdapter"> <property name="showSql" value="${com.group.server.vendoradapter.showsql}"/> <property name="generateDdl" value="${com.group.server.vendoradapter.generateDdl}"/> <property name="database" value="${com.group.server.vendoradapter.database}"/> </bean> </property> </bean> <bean id="transactionManager" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.JpaTransactionManager"> <property name="entityManagerFactory" ref="entityManagerFactory"/> <property name="dataSource" ref="dataSource"/> </bean> <bean id="dataSource" class="org.springframework.jdbc.datasource.DriverManagerDataSource"> <property name="driverClassName" value="${com.group.server.datasource.driverClassName}"/> <property name="url" value="${com.group.server.datasource.url}"/> <property name="username" value="${com.group.server.datasource.username}"/> <property name="password" value="${com.group.server.datasource.password}"/> </bean> <bean id="executorService" class="java.util.concurrent.Executors" factory-method="newCachedThreadPool"/> </beans> persistence.xml <persistence xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence" version="1.0"> <persistence-unit name="MyServer" transaction-type="RESOURCE_LOCAL"/> </persistence> OrderDaoImpl package com.group.service; import com.group.model.Order; import org.springframework.stereotype.Repository; import org.springframework.transaction.annotation.Transactional; import javax.persistence.EntityManager; import javax.persistence.PersistenceContext; import javax.persistence.Query; import java.util.List; @Repository @Transactional public class OrderDaoImpl implements OrderDao { private EntityManager entityManager; @PersistenceContext public void setEntityManager(EntityManager entityManager) { this.entityManager = entityManager; } @Override public Order find(Integer id) { Order order = entityManager.find(Order.class, id); return order; } @Override public List<Order> findAll() { Query query = entityManager.createQuery("select o from Order o"); return query.getResultList(); } @Override public List<Order> findBySymbol(String symbol) { Query query = entityManager.createQuery("select o from Order o where o.symbol = :symbol"); return query.setParameter("symbol", symbol).getResultList(); } }

  • Migrating from SQL Trace to Extended Events

    - by extended_events
    In SQL Server codenamed “Denali” we are moving our diagnostic tracing capabilities forward by building a system on top of Extended Events. With every new system you face the specter of migration which is always a bit of a hassle. I’m obviously motivated to see everyone move their diagnostic tracing systems over to the new extended events based system, so I wanted to make sure we lowered the bar for the migration process to help ease your trials. In my initial post on Denali CTP 1 I described a couple tables that we created that will help map the existing SQL Trace Event Classes to the equivalent Extended Events events. In this post I’ll describe the tables in a bit more details, explain the relationship between the SQL Trace objects (Event Class & Column) and Extended Event objects (Events & Actions) and at the end provide some sample code for a managed stored procedure that will take an existing SQL Trace session (eg. a trace that you can see in sys.Traces) and converts it into event session DDL. Can you relate? In some ways, SQL Trace and Extended Events is kind of like the Standard and Metric measuring systems in the United States. If you spend too much time trying to figure out how to convert between the two it will probably make your head hurt. It’s often better to just use the new system without trying to translate between the two. That said, people like to relate new things to the things they’re comfortable with, so, with some trepidation, I will now explain how these two systems are related to each other. First, some terms… SQL Trace is made up of Event Classes and Columns. The Event Class occurs as the result of some activity in the database engine, for example, SQL:Batch Completed fires when a batch has completed executing on the server. Each Event Class can have any number of Columns associated with it and those Columns contain the data that is interesting about the Event Class, such as the duration or database name. In Extended Events we have objects named Events, EventData field and Actions. The Event (some people call this an xEvent but I’ll stick with Event) is equivalent to the Event Class in SQL Trace since it is the thing that occurs as the result of some activity taking place in the server. An EventData field (from now on I’ll just refer to these as fields) is a piece of information that is highly correlated with the event and is always included as part of the schema of an Event. An Action is something that can be associated with any Event and it will cause some additional “action” to occur when ever the parent Event occurs. Actions can do a number of different things for example, there are Actions that collect additional data and, take memory dumps. When mapping SQL Trace onto Extended Events, Columns are covered by a combination of both fields and Actions. Knowing exactly where a Column is covered by a field and where it is covered by an Action is a bit of an art, so we created the mapping tables to make you an Artist without the years of practice. Let me draw you a map. Event Mapping The table dbo.trace_xe_event_map exists in the master database with the following structure: Column_name Type trace_event_id smallint package_name nvarchar xe_event_name nvarchar By joining this table sys.trace_events using trace_event_id and to the sys.dm_xe_objects using xe_event_name you can get a fair amount of information about how Event Classes are related to Events. The most basic query this lends itself to is to match an Event Class with the corresponding Event. SELECT t.trace_event_id, t.name [event_class], e.package_name, e.xe_event_name FROM sys.trace_events t INNER JOIN dbo.trace_xe_event_map e ON t.trace_event_id = e.trace_event_id There are a couple things you’ll notice as you peruse the output of this query: For the most part, the names of Events are fairly close to the original Event Class; eg. SP:CacheMiss == sp_cache_miss, and so on. We’ve mostly stuck to a one to one mapping between Event Classes and Events, but there are a few cases where we have combined when it made sense. For example, Data File Auto Grow, Log File Auto Grow, Data File Auto Shrink & Log File Auto Shrink are now all covered by a single event named database_file_size_change. This just seemed like a “smarter” implementation for this type of event, you can get all the same information from this single event (grow/shrink, Data/Log, Auto/Manual growth) without having multiple different events. You can use Predicates if you want to limit the output to just one of the original Event Class measures. There are some Event Classes that did not make the cut and were not migrated. These fall into two categories; there were a few Event Classes that had been deprecated, or that just did not make sense, so we didn’t migrate them. (You won’t find an Event related to mounting a tape – sorry.) The second class is bigger; with rare exception, we did not migrate any of the Event Classes that were related to Security Auditing using SQL Trace. We introduced the SQL Audit feature in SQL Server 2008 and that will be the compliance and auditing feature going forward. Doing this is a very deliberate decision to support separation of duties for DBAs. There are separate permissions required for SQL Audit and Extended Events tracing so you can assign these tasks to different people if you choose. (If you’re wondering, the permission for Extended Events is ALTER ANY EVENT SESSION, which is covered by CONTROL SERVER.) Action Mapping The table dbo.trace_xe_action_map exists in the master database with the following structure: Column_name Type trace_column_id smallint package_name nvarchar xe_action_name nvarchar You can find more details by joining this to sys.trace_columns on the trace_column_id field. SELECT c.trace_column_id, c.name [column_name], a.package_name, a.xe_action_name FROM sys.trace_columns c INNER JOIN dbo.trace_xe_action_map a ON c.trace_column_id = a.trace_column_id If you examine this list, you’ll notice that there are relatively few Actions that map to SQL Trace Columns given the number of Columns that exist. This is not because we forgot to migrate all the Columns, but because much of the data for individual Event Classes is included as part of the EventData fields of the equivalent Events so there is no need to specify them as Actions. Putting it all together If you’ve spent a bunch of time figuring out the inner workings of SQL Trace, and who hasn’t, then you probably know that the typically set of Columns you find associated with any given Event Class in SQL Profiler is not fix, but is determine by the contents of the table sys.trace_event_bindings. We’ve used this table along with the mapping tables to produce a list of Event + Action combinations that duplicate the SQL Profiler Event Class definitions using the following query, which you can also find in the Books Online topic How To: View the Extended Events Equivalents to SQL Trace Event Classes. USE MASTER; GO SELECT DISTINCT tb.trace_event_id, te.name AS 'Event Class', em.package_name AS 'Package', em.xe_event_name AS 'XEvent Name', tb.trace_column_id, tc.name AS 'SQL Trace Column', am.xe_action_name as 'Extended Events action' FROM (sys.trace_events te LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.trace_xe_event_map em ON te.trace_event_id = em.trace_event_id) LEFT OUTER JOIN sys.trace_event_bindings tb ON em.trace_event_id = tb.trace_event_id LEFT OUTER JOIN sys.trace_columns tc ON tb.trace_column_id = tc.trace_column_id LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.trace_xe_action_map am ON tc.trace_column_id = am.trace_column_id ORDER BY te.name, tc.name As you might imagine, it’s also possible to map an existing trace definition to the equivalent event session by judicious use of fn_trace_geteventinfo joined with the two mapping tables. This query extracts the list of Events and Actions equivalent to the trace with ID = 1, which is most likely the Default Trace. You can find this query, along with a set of other queries and steps required to migrate your existing traces over to Extended Events in the Books Online topic How to: Convert an Existing SQL Trace Script to an Extended Events Session. USE MASTER; GO DECLARE @trace_id int SET @trace_id = 1 SELECT DISTINCT el.eventid, em.package_name, em.xe_event_name AS 'event' , el.columnid, ec.xe_action_name AS 'action' FROM (sys.fn_trace_geteventinfo(@trace_id) AS el LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.trace_xe_event_map AS em ON el.eventid = em.trace_event_id) LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.trace_xe_action_map AS ec ON el.columnid = ec.trace_column_id WHERE em.xe_event_name IS NOT NULL AND ec.xe_action_name IS NOT NULL You’ll notice in the output that the list doesn’t include any of the security audit Event Classes, as I wrote earlier, those were not migrated. But wait…there’s more! If this were an infomercial there’d by some obnoxious guy next to me blogging “Well Mike…that’s pretty neat, but I’m sure you can do more. Can’t you make it even easier to migrate from SQL Trace?” Needless to say, I’d blog back, in an overly excited way, “You bet I can' obnoxious blogger side-kick!” What I’ve got for you here is a Extended Events Team Blog only special – this tool will not be sold in any store; it’s a special offer for those of you reading the blog. I’ve wrapped all the logic of pulling the configuration information out of an existing trace and and building the Extended Events DDL statement into a handy, dandy CLR stored procedure. Once you load the assembly and register the procedure you just supply the trace id (from sys.traces) and provide a name for the event session. Run the procedure and out pops the DDL required to create an equivalent session. Any aspects of the trace that could not be duplicated are included in comments within the DDL output. This procedure does not actually create the event session – you need to copy the DDL out of the message tab and put it into a new query window to do that. It also requires an existing trace (but it doesn’t have to be running) to evaluate; there is no functionality to parse t-sql scripts. I’m not going to spend a bunch of time explaining the code here – the code is pretty well commented and hopefully easy to follow. If not, you can always post comments or hit the feedback button to send us some mail. Sample code: TraceToExtendedEventDDL Installing the procedure Just in case you’re not familiar with installing CLR procedures…once you’ve compile the assembly you can load it using a script like this: -- Context to master USE master GO -- Create the assembly from a shared location. CREATE ASSEMBLY TraceToXESessionConverter FROM 'C:\Temp\TraceToXEventSessionConverter.dll' WITH PERMISSION_SET = SAFE GO -- Create a stored procedure from the assembly. CREATE PROCEDURE CreateEventSessionFromTrace @trace_id int, @session_name nvarchar(max) AS EXTERNAL NAME TraceToXESessionConverter.StoredProcedures.ConvertTraceToExtendedEvent GO Enjoy! -Mike

  • Customize Team Build 2010 – Part 13: Get control over the Build Output

    In the series the following parts have been published Part 1: Introduction Part 2: Add arguments and variables Part 3: Use more complex arguments Part 4: Create your own activity Part 5: Increase AssemblyVersion Part 6: Use custom type for an argument Part 7: How is the custom assembly found Part 8: Send information to the build log Part 9: Impersonate activities (run under other credentials) Part 10: Include Version Number in the Build Number Part 11: Speed up opening my build process template Part 12: How to debug my custom activities Part 13: Get control over the Build Output Part 14: Execute a PowerShell script Part 15: Fail a build based on the exit code of a console application In the part 8, I have explained how you can add informational messages, warnings or errors to the build output. If you want to integrate with other lines of text to the build output, you need to do more. This post will show you how you can add extra steps, additional information and hyperlinks to the build output. UPDATE 13-12-2010: Thanks to Jason Pricket, it is now also possible to not show every activity in the build log. This is really useful when you are doing for-loops in your template. To see how you can do that, check out Jason's blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jpricket/archive/2010/12/09/tfs-2010-making-your-build-log-less-noisy.aspx Add an hyperlink to the end of the build output Lets start with a simple example of how you can adjust the build output. In this case we are going to add at the end of the build output an hyperlink where a user can click on to for example start the deployment to the test environment. In part 4 you can find information how you can create a custom activity To add information to the build output, you need the BuildDetail. This value is a variable in your xaml and is thus easily transferable to you custom activity. Besides the BuildDetail the user has also to specify the text and the url that has to be added to the end of the build output. The following code segment shows you how you can achieve this. [BuildActivity(HostEnvironmentOption.All)] public sealed class AddHyperlinkToBuildOutput : CodeActivity { [RequiredArgument] public InArgument<IBuildDetail> BuildDetail { get; set; } [RequiredArgument] public InArgument<string> DisplayText { get; set; } [RequiredArgument] public InArgument<string> Url { get; set; } protected override void Execute(CodeActivityContext context) { // Obtain the runtime value of the input arguments IBuildDetail buildDetail = context.GetValue(this.BuildDetail); string displayText = context.GetValue(this.DisplayText); string url = context.GetValue(this.Url); // Add the hyperlink buildDetail.Information.AddExternalLink(displayText, new Uri(url)); buildDetail.Information.Save(); } } If you add this activity to somewhere in your build process template (within the scope Run on Agent), you will get the following build output Add an line of text to the build output The next challenge is to add this kind of output not only to the end of the build output but at the step that is currently executing. To be able to do this, you need the current node in the build output. The following code shows you how you can achieve this. First you need to get the current activity tracking, which you can get with the following line of code IActivityTracking currentTracking = context.GetExtension<IBuildLoggingExtension>().GetActivityTracking(context); Then you can create a new node and set its type to Activity Tracking Node (so copy it from the current node) and do nice things with the node. IBuildInformationNode childNode = currentTracking.Node.Children.CreateNode(); childNode.Type = currentTracking.Node.Type; childNode.Fields.Add("DisplayText", "This text is displayed."); You can also add a build step to display progress IBuildStep buildStep = childNode.Children.AddBuildStep("Custom Build Step", "This is my custom build step"); buildStep.FinishTime = DateTime.Now.AddSeconds(10); buildStep.Status = BuildStepStatus.Succeeded; Or you can add an hyperlink to the node childNode.Children.AddExternalLink("My link", new Uri(http://www.ewaldhofman.nl)); When you combine this together you get the following result in the build output You can download the full solution at BuildProcess.zip. • Flex actionscript extending DateChooser, events in calendar

    - by Nemi
    ExtendedDateChooser class is great solution for simple event calendar used in my flex project. You can find it if google for "Adding-Calendar-Event-Entries-to-the-Flex-DateChooser-Component" with a link of updated solution in comments of the post. I posted files below. Problem in that calendar is text events are missing when month is changed. Is there updateCompleted event in Actionscript just like in dateChooser flex component? Like in: <mx:DateChooser id="dc" updateCompleted="goThroughDateChooserCalendarLayoutAndSetEventsInCalendarAgain()"</mx> When scroll event is added, which is available in Actionscript, it gets dispatched but after updateDisplayList() is fired, so didn't manage to answer, why are calendar events erased? Any suggestions, what to add in code, maybe override some function? ExtendedDateChooserClass.mxml  <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" xmlns:mycomp="cyberslingers.controls.*" layout="absolute" creationComplete="init()"> <mx:Script>  import cyberslingers.controls.ExtendedDateChooser; import mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent; import mx.rpc.events.FaultEvent; import mx.controls.Alert; public var mycal:ExtendedDateChooser = new ExtendedDateChooser(); // collection to hold date, data and label [Bindable] public var dateCollection:XMLList = new XMLList(); private function init():void { eventList.send(); } private function readCollection(event:ResultEvent):void { dateCollection = event.result.calendarevent; //Position and size the calendar mycal.width = 400; mycal.height = 400; //Add the data from the XML file to the calendar mycal.dateCollection = dateCollection; //Add the calendar to the canvas this.addChild(mycal); } private function readFaultHandler(event:FaultEvent):void { Alert.show(event.fault.message, "Could not load data"); }  </mx:Script> <mx:HTTPService id="eventList" url="data.xml" resultFormat="e4x" result="readCollection(event);" fault="readFaultHandler(event);"/> </mx:Application> ExtendedDateChooser.as package cyberslingers.controls { import flash.events.Event; import flash.events.TextEvent; import mx.collections.ArrayCollection; import mx.controls.Alert; import mx.controls.CalendarLayout; import mx.controls.DateChooser; import mx.core.UITextField; import mx.events.FlexEvent; public class ExtendedDateChooser extends DateChooser { public function ExtendedDateChooser() { super(); this.addEventListener(TextEvent.LINK, linkHandler); this.addEventListener(FlexEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE, addEvents); } //datasource public var dateCollection:XMLList = new XMLList(); //-------------------------------------- // Add events //-------------------------------------- /** * Loop through calendar control and add event links * @param e */ private function addEvents(e:Event):void { // loop through all the calendar children for(var i:uint = 0; i < this.numChildren; i++) { var calendarObj:Object = this.getChildAt(i); // find the CalendarLayout object if(calendarObj.hasOwnProperty("className")) { if(calendarObj.className == "CalendarLayout") { var cal:CalendarLayout = CalendarLayout(calendarObj); // loop through all the CalendarLayout children for(var j:uint = 0; j < cal.numChildren; j++) { var dateLabel:Object = cal.getChildAt(j); // find all UITextFields if(dateLabel.hasOwnProperty("text")) { var day:UITextField = UITextField(dateLabel); var dayHTML:String = day.text; day.selectable = true; day.wordWrap = true; day.multiline = true; day.styleName = "EventLabel"; //TODO: passing date as string is not ideal, tough to validate //Make sure to add one to month since it is zero based var eventArray:Array = dateHelper((this.displayedMonth+1) + "/" + dateLabel.text + "/" + this.displayedYear); if(eventArray.length > 0) { for(var k:uint = 0; k < eventArray.length; k++) { dayHTML += "
" + eventArray[k].label + ""; } day.htmlText = dayHTML; } } } } } } } //-------------------------------------- // Events //-------------------------------------- /** * Handle clicking text link * @param e */ private function linkHandler(event:TextEvent):void { // What do we want to do when user clicks an entry?   • Event Handlers Not Getting Called? - wxWidgets

    - by Alex
    Hello all, I'm working on a program for my C++ programming class, using wxWidgets. I'm having a huge problem in that my event handlers (I assume) are not getting called, because when I click on the button to trigger the event, nothing happens. My question is: Can you help me find the problem and explain why they would not be getting called? The event handlers OnAbout and OnQuit are working, just not OnCompute or OnClear. • Using Unity – Part 6

    - by nmarun
    This is the last of the ‘Unity’ series and I’ll be talking about generics here. If you’ve been following the previous articles, you must have noticed that I’m just adding more and more ‘Product’ classes to the project. I’ll change that trend in this blog where I’ll be adding an ICaller interface and a Caller class. 1: public interface ICaller<T> where T : IProduct 2: { 3: string CallMethod<T>(string typeName); 4: } 5: 6: public class Caller<T> : ICaller<T> where T:IProduct 7: { 8: public string CallMethod<T>(string typeName) 9: { 10: //... 11: } 12: } We’ll fill-in the implementation of the CallMethod in a few, but first, here’s what we’re going to do: create an instance of the Caller class pass it the IProduct as a generic parameter in the CallMethod method, we’ll use Unity to dynamically create an instance of IProduct implemented object I need to add the config information for ICaller and Caller types. 1: <typeAlias alias="ICaller`1" type="ProductModel.ICaller`1, ProductModel" /> 2: <typeAlias alias="Caller`1" type="ProductModel.Caller`1, ProductModel" /> The .NET Framework’s convention to express generic types is ICaller`1, where the digit following the "`" matches the number of types contained in the generic type. So a generic type that contains 4 types contained in the generic type would be declared as: 1: <typeAlias alias="Caller`4" type="ProductModel.Caller`4, ProductModel" /> On my .aspx page, I have the following UI design: 1: <asp:RadioButton ID="LegacyProduct" Text="Product" runat="server" GroupName="ProductWeb" 2: AutoPostBack="true" OnCheckedChanged="RadioButton_CheckedChanged" /> 3:
4: <asp:RadioButton ID="NewProduct" Text="Product 2" runat="server" GroupName="ProductWeb" 5: AutoPostBack="true" OnCheckedChanged="RadioButton_CheckedChanged" /> 6:
7: <asp:RadioButton ID="ComplexProduct" Text="Product 3" runat="server" GroupName="ProductWeb" 8: AutoPostBack="true" OnCheckedChanged="RadioButton_CheckedChanged" /> 9:
10: <asp:RadioButton ID="ArrayConstructor" Text="Product 4" runat="server" GroupName="ProductWeb" 11: AutoPostBack="true" OnCheckedChanged="RadioButton_CheckedChanged" /> Things to note here are that all these radio buttons belong to the same GroupName => only one of these four can be clicked. Next, all four controls postback to the same ‘OnCheckedChanged’ event and lastly the ID’s point to named types of IProduct (already added to the web.config file). 1: <type type="IProduct" mapTo="Product" name="LegacyProduct" /> 2: 3: <type type="IProduct" mapTo="Product2" name="NewProduct" /> 4: 5: <type type="IProduct" mapTo="Product3" name="ComplexProduct"> 6: ... 7: </type> 8: 9: <type type="IProduct" mapTo="Product4" name="ArrayConstructor"> 10: ... 11: </type> In my calling code, I see which radio button was clicked, pass that as an argument to the CallMethod method. 1: protected void RadioButton_CheckedChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) 2: { 3: string typeName = ((RadioButton)sender).ID; 4: ICaller<IProduct> caller = unityContainer.Resolve<ICaller<IProduct>>(); 5: productDetailsLabel.Text = caller.CallMethod<IProduct>(typeName); 6: } What’s basically happening here is that the ID of the control gets passed on to the typeName which will be one of “LegacyProduct”, “NewProduct”, “ComplexProduct” or “ArrayConstructor”. I then create an instance of an ICaller and pass the typeName to it. Now, we’ll fill in the blank for the CallMethod method (sorry for the naming guys). 1: public string CallMethod<T>(string typeName) 2: { 3: IUnityContainer unityContainer = HttpContext.Current.Application["UnityContainer"] as IUnityContainer; 4: T productInstance = unityContainer.Resolve<T>(typeName); 5: return ((IProduct)productInstance).WriteProductDetails(); 6: } This is where I’ll resolve the IProduct by passing the type name and calling the WriteProductDetails() method. With all things in place, when I run the application and choose different radio buttons, the output should look something like below: Basically this is how generics come to play in Unity. Please see the code I’ve used for this here. This marks the end of the ‘Unity’ series. I’ll definitely post any updates that I find, but for now I don’t have anything planned.

  • jQuery Templates - XHTML Validation

    - by hajan
    Many developers have already asked me about this. How to make XHTML valid the web page which uses jQuery Templates. Maybe you have already tried, and I don't know what are your results but here is my opinion regarding this. By default, Visual Studio.NET adds the xhtml1-transitional.dtd schema So, if you try to validate your page which has jQuery Templates against this schema, your page won't be XHTML valid. Why? It's because when creating templates, we use HTML tags inside block. Yes, I know that the script block has type="text/html" but it's not supported in this schema, thus it's not valid. Let's try validate the following code Code

jQuery Templates :: XHTML Validation

To validate it, go to http://validator.w3.org/#validate_by_input and copy paste the code rendered on client-side browser (it’s almost the same, only the template is rendered inside OL so LI tags are created for each item). Press CHECK and you will get: Result: 1 Errors, 2 warning(s) The error message says: Validation Output: 1 Error Line 21, Column 13: document type does not allow element "li" here
Yes, the
HTML element is not allowed inside the

This document was successfully checked as XHTML 1.0 Transitional! Result: Passed If you have any additional methods for XHTML validation, you can share it :). Thanks,Hajan

  • c# Truncate HTML safely for article summary

    - by WickedW
    Hi All, Does anyone have a c# variation of this? This is so I can take some html and display it without breaking as a summary lead in to an article? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1193500/php-truncate-html-ignoring-tags Save me from reinventing the wheel! Thank you very much ---------- edit ------------------ Sorry, new here, and your right, should have phrased the question better, heres a bit more info I wish to take a html string and truncate it to a set number of words (or even char length) so I can then show the start of it as a summary (which then leads to the main article). I wish to preserve the html so I can show the links etc in preview. The main issue I have to solve is the fact that we may well end up with unclosed html tags if we truncate in the middle of 1 or more tags! The idea I have for solution is to a) truncate the html to N words (words better but chars ok) first (be sure not to stop in the middle of a tag and truncate a require attribute) b) work through the opened html tags in this truncated string (maybe stick them on stack as I go?) c) then work through the closing tags and ensure they match the ones on stack as I pop them off? d) if any open tags left on stack after this, then write them to end of truncated string and html should be good to go!!!! -- edit 12112009 Here is what I have bumbled together so far as a unittest file in VS2008, this 'may' help someone in future My hack attempts based on Jan code are at top for char version + word version (DISCLAIMER: this is dirty rough code!! on my part) I assume working with 'well-formed' HTML in all cases (but not necessarily a full document with a root node as per XML version) Abels XML version is at bottom, but not yet got round to fully getting tests to run on this yet (plus need to understand the code) ... I will update when I get chance to refine having trouble with posting code? is there no upload facility on stack? • Reference a GNU C (POSIX) DLL built in GCC against Cygwin, from C#/NET

    - by Dale Halliwell
    Here is what I want: I have a huge legacy C/C++ codebase written for POSIX, including some very POSIX specific stuff like pthreads. This can be compiled on Cygwin/GCC and run as an executable under Windows with the Cygwin DLL. What I would like to do is build the codebase itself into a Windows DLL that I can then reference from C# and write a wrapper around it to access some parts of it programatically. I have tried this approach with the very simple "hello world" example at http://www.cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/dll.html and it doesn't seem to work. #include <stdio.h> extern "C" __declspec(dllexport) int hello(); int hello() { printf ("Hello World!\n"); return 42; } I believe I should be able to reference a DLL built with the above code in C# using something like: [DllImport("kernel32.dll")] public static extern IntPtr LoadLibrary(string dllToLoad); [DllImport("kernel32.dll")] public static extern IntPtr GetProcAddress(IntPtr hModule, string procedureName); [DllImport("kernel32.dll")] public static extern bool FreeLibrary(IntPtr hModule); [UnmanagedFunctionPointer(CallingConvention.Cdecl)] private delegate int hello(); static void Main(string[] args) { var path = Path.Combine(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory, "helloworld.dll"); IntPtr pDll = LoadLibrary(path); IntPtr pAddressOfFunctionToCall = GetProcAddress(pDll, "hello"); hello hello = (hello)Marshal.GetDelegateForFunctionPointer( pAddressOfFunctionToCall, typeof(hello)); int theResult = hello(); Console.WriteLine(theResult.ToString()); bool result = FreeLibrary(pDll); Console.ReadKey(); } But this approach doesn't seem to work. LoadLibrary returns null. It can find the DLL (helloworld.dll), it is just like it can't load it or find the exported function. I am sure that if I get this basic case working I can reference the rest of my codebase in this way. Any suggestions or pointers, or does anyone know if what I want is even possible? Thanks. Edit: Examined my DLL with Dependency Walker (great tool, thanks) and it seems to export the function correctly. Question: should I be referencing it as the function name Dependency Walker seems to find (_Z5hellov)? Edit2: Just to show you I have tried it, linking directly to the dll at relative or absolute path (i.e. not using LoadLibrary): [DllImport(@"C:\.....\helloworld.dll")] public static extern int hello(); static void Main(string[] args) { int theResult = hello(); Console.WriteLine(theResult.ToString()); Console.ReadKey(); } This fails with: "Unable to load DLL 'C:.....\helloworld.dll': Invalid access to memory location. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800703E6) *Edit 3: * Oleg has suggested running dumpbin.exe on my dll, this is the output: Dump of file helloworld.dll File Type: DLL Section contains the following exports for helloworld.dll 00000000 characteristics 4BD5037F time date stamp Mon Apr 26 15:07:43 2010 0.00 version 1 ordinal base 1 number of functions 1 number of names ordinal hint RVA name 1 0 000010F0 hello Summary 1000 .bss 1000 .data 1000 .debug_abbrev 1000 .debug_info 1000 .debug_line 1000 .debug_pubnames 1000 .edata 1000 .eh_frame 1000 .idata 1000 .reloc 1000 .text Edit 4 Thanks everyone for the help, I managed to get it working. Oleg's answer gave me the information I needed to find out what I was doing wrong. There are 2 ways to do this. One is to build with the gcc -mno-cygwin compiler flag, which builds the dll without the cygwin dll, basically as if you had built it in MingW. Building it this way got my hello world example working! However, MingW doesn't have all the libraries that cygwin has in the installer, so if your POSIX code has dependencies on these libraries (mine had heaps) you can't do this way. And if your POSIX code didn't have those dependencies, why not just build for Win32 from the beginning. So that's not much help unless you want to spend time setting up MingW properly. The other option is to build with the Cygwin DLL. The Cygwin DLL needs an initialization function init() to be called before it can be used. This is why my code wasn't working before. The code below loads and runs my hello world example. //[DllImport(@"hello.dll", EntryPoint = "#1",SetLastError = true)] //static extern int helloworld(); //don't do this! cygwin needs to be init first [DllImport("kernel32", CharSet = CharSet.Ansi, ExactSpelling = true, SetLastError = true)] static extern IntPtr GetProcAddress(IntPtr hModule, string procName); [DllImport("kernel32", SetLastError = true)] static extern IntPtr LoadLibrary(string lpFileName); public delegate int MyFunction(); static void Main(string[] args) { //load cygwin dll IntPtr pcygwin = LoadLibrary("cygwin1.dll"); IntPtr pcyginit = GetProcAddress(pcygwin, "cygwin_dll_init"); Action init = (Action)Marshal.GetDelegateForFunctionPointer(pcyginit, typeof(Action)); init(); IntPtr phello = LoadLibrary("hello.dll"); IntPtr pfn = GetProcAddress(phello, "helloworld"); MyFunction helloworld = (MyFunction)Marshal.GetDelegateForFunctionPointer(pfn, typeof(MyFunction)); Console.WriteLine(helloworld()); Console.ReadKey(); } Thanks to everyone that answered~~

  • How to read verbose VC++ linker output

    - by Assaf Lavie
    Trying to debug some linker errors, I turned on /VERBOSE and I'm trying to make sense of the output. It occurs to me that I really don't know how to read it. For example: 1>Compiling version info 1>Linking... 1>Starting pass 1 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:mfc80.lib 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:mfcs80.lib 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:msvcrt.lib 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:kernel32.lib 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:user32.lib .... 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:libgslcblasMD.lib 1>Searching libraries 1> Searching V:\Src\Solutions\\..\..\\Common\Win32\Lib\PlxApi.lib: 1> Searching ..\..\..\..\out\win32\release\lib\camerageometry.lib: 1> Searching ..\..\..\..\out\win32\release\lib\geometry.lib: 1> Found "public: __thiscall VisionMap::Geometry::Box2d::operator class VisionMap::Geometry::Box2DInt(void)const " (??BBox2d@Geometry@VisionMap@@QBE?AVBox2DInt@12@XZ) 1> Referenced in FocusDlg.obj 1> Loaded geometry.lib(Box2d.obj) 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:CGAL-vc80-mt.lib 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:boost_thread-vc80-mt-1_33_1.lib What's going on here? I think I understand this bit: 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:libgslcblasMD.lib 1>Searching libraries 1> Searching V:\Src\Solutions\\..\..\\Common\Win32\Lib\PlxApi.lib: 1> Searching ..\..\..\..\out\win32\release\lib\camerageometry.lib: 1> Searching ..\..\..\..\out\win32\release\lib\geometry.lib: 1> Found "public: __thiscall VisionMap::Geometry::Box2d::operator class VisionMap::Geometry::Box2DInt(void)const " (??BBox2d@Geometry@VisionMap@@QBE?AVBox2DInt@12@XZ) 1> Referenced in FocusDlg.obj 1> Loaded geometry.lib(Box2d.obj) It's trying to find the implementation of the above operator, which is used somewhere in FocusDlg.cpp, and it finds it in geometry.lib. But what does 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:libgslcblasMD.lib mean? What determines the order of symbol resolution? Why is it loading this particular symbol while processing libgslcblasMD.lib which is a 3rd party library? Or am I reading it wrong? It seems that the linker is going through the symbols referenced in the project's various object files, but I have no idea in what order. It then searches the static libraries the project uses - by project reference, explicit import and automatic default library imports; but it does so in an order that, again, seems arbitrary to me. When it finds a symbol, for example in geometry.lib, it then continues to find a bunch of other symbols from the same lib: 1> Searching V:\Src\Solutions\\..\..\\Common\Win32\Lib\PlxApi.lib: 1> Searching ..\..\..\..\out\win32\release\lib\camerageometry.lib: 1> Searching ..\..\..\..\out\win32\release\lib\geometry.lib: 1> Found "public: __thiscall VisionMap::Geometry::Box2d::operator class VisionMap::Geometry::Box2DInt(void)const " (??BBox2d@Geometry@VisionMap@@QBE?AVBox2DInt@12@XZ) 1> Referenced in FocusDlg.obj 1> Loaded geometry.lib(Box2d.obj) 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:CGAL-vc80-mt.lib 1>Processed /DEFAULTLIB:boost_thread-vc80-mt-1_33_1.lib 1> Found "public: __thiscall VisionMap::Geometry::Box2DInt::Box2DInt(int,int,int,int)" (??0Box2DInt@Geometry@VisionMap@@QAE@HHHH@Z) 1> Referenced in FocusDlg.obj 1> Referenced in ImageView.obj 1> Referenced in geometry.lib(Box2d.obj) 1> Loaded geometry.lib(Box2DInt.obj) 1> Found "public: virtual __thiscall VisionMap::Geometry::Point3d::~Point3d(void)" (??1Point3d@Geometry@VisionMap@@UAE@XZ) 1> Referenced in GPSFrm.obj 1> Referenced in MainFrm.obj 1> Loaded geometry.lib(Point3d.obj) 1> Found "void __cdecl VisionMap::Geometry::serialize<class boost::archive::binary_oarchive>(class boost::archive::binary_oarchive &,class VisionMap::Geometry::Point3d &,unsigned int)" (??$serialize@Vbinary_oarchive@archive@boost@@@Geometry@VisionMap@@YAXAAVbinary_oarchive@archive@boost@@AAVPoint3d@01@I@Z) 1> Referenced in GPSFrm.obj 1> Referenced in MainFrm.obj 1> Loaded geometry.lib(GeometrySerializationImpl.obj) But then, for some reason, it goes on to find symbols that are defined in other libs, and returns to geometry later on (a bunch of times). So clearly it's not doing "look in geometry and load every symbol that's references in the project, and then continue to other libraries". But it's not clear to me what is the order of symbol lookup. And what's the deal with all those libraries being processed at the beginning of the linker's work, but not finding any symbols to load from them? Does this project really not use anything from msvcrt.lib, kernel32.lib? Seems unlikely. So basically I'm looking to decipher the underlying order in the linker's operation.

  • Event Handlers Not Getting Called? - wxWidgets & C++

    - by Alex
    Hello all, I'm working on a program for my C++ programming class, using wxWidgets. I'm having a huge problem in that my event handlers (I assume) are not getting called, because when I click on the button to trigger the event, nothing happens. My question is: Can you help me find the problem and explain why they would not be getting called? The event handlers OnAbout and OnQuit are working, just not OnCompute or OnClear. I'm really frustrated as I can't figure this out. Thanks a bunch in advance! #include "wx/wx.h" #include "time.h" #include <string> using std::string; // create object of Time class Time first; class App: public wxApp { virtual bool OnInit(); }; class MainPanel : public wxPanel { public: // Constructor for panel class // Constructs my panel class // Params - wxWindow pointer // no return type // pre-conditions: none // post-conditions: none MainPanel(wxWindow* parent); // OnCompute is the event handler for the Compute button // params - none // preconditions - none // postconditions - tasks will have been carried otu successfully // returns void void OnCompute(wxCommandEvent& WXUNUSED(event)); // OnClear is the event handler for the Clear button // params - none // preconditions - none // postconditions - all text areas will be cleared of data // returns void void OnClear(wxCommandEvent& WXUNUSED(event)); // Destructor for panel class // params none // preconditions - none // postconditions - none // no return type ~MainPanel( ); private: wxStaticText *startLabel; wxStaticText *endLabel; wxStaticText *pCLabel; wxStaticText *newEndLabel; wxTextCtrl *start; wxTextCtrl *end; wxTextCtrl *pC; wxTextCtrl *newEnd; wxButton *compute; wxButton *clear; DECLARE_EVENT_TABLE() }; class MainFrame: public wxFrame { private: wxPanel *mainPanel; public: MainFrame(const wxString& title, const wxPoint& pos, const wxSize& size); void OnQuit(wxCommandEvent& event); void OnAbout(wxCommandEvent& event); ~MainFrame(); DECLARE_EVENT_TABLE() }; enum { ID_Quit = 1, ID_About, BUTTON_COMPUTE = 100, BUTTON_CLEAR = 200 }; IMPLEMENT_APP(App) BEGIN_EVENT_TABLE(MainFrame, wxFrame) EVT_MENU(ID_Quit, MainFrame::OnQuit) EVT_MENU(ID_About, MainFrame::OnAbout) END_EVENT_TABLE() BEGIN_EVENT_TABLE(MainPanel, wxPanel) EVT_MENU(BUTTON_COMPUTE, MainPanel::OnCompute) EVT_MENU(BUTTON_CLEAR, MainPanel::OnClear) END_EVENT_TABLE() bool App::OnInit() { MainFrame *frame = new MainFrame( _("Good Guys Delivery Time Calculator"), wxPoint(50, 50), wxSize(450,340) ); frame->Show(true); SetTopWindow(frame); return true; } MainPanel::MainPanel(wxWindow* parent) : wxPanel(parent) { startLabel = new wxStaticText(this, -1, "Start Time:", wxPoint(75, 35)); start = new wxTextCtrl(this, -1, "", wxPoint(135, 35), wxSize(40, 21)); endLabel = new wxStaticText(this, -1, "End Time:", wxPoint(200, 35)); end = new wxTextCtrl(this, -1, "", wxPoint(260, 35), wxSize(40, 21)); pCLabel = new wxStaticText(this, -1, "Percent Change:", wxPoint(170, 85)); pC = new wxTextCtrl(this, -1, "", wxPoint(260, 85), wxSize(40, 21)); newEndLabel = new wxStaticText(this, -1, "New End Time:", wxPoint(180, 130)); newEnd = new wxTextCtrl(this, -1, "", wxPoint(260, 130), wxSize(40, 21)); compute = new wxButton(this, BUTTON_COMPUTE, "Compute", wxPoint(135, 185), wxSize(75, 35)); clear = new wxButton(this, BUTTON_CLEAR, "Clear", wxPoint(230, 185), wxSize(75, 35)); } MainPanel::~MainPanel() {} MainFrame::MainFrame(const wxString& title, const wxPoint& pos, const wxSize& size) : wxFrame( NULL, -1, title, pos, size ) { mainPanel = new MainPanel(this); wxMenu *menuFile = new wxMenu; menuFile->Append( ID_About, _("&About...") ); menuFile->AppendSeparator(); menuFile->Append( ID_Quit, _("E&xit") ); wxMenuBar *menuBar = new wxMenuBar; menuBar->Append( menuFile, _("&File") ); SetMenuBar( menuBar ); CreateStatusBar(); SetStatusText( _("Hi") ); } MainFrame::~MainFrame() {} void MainFrame::OnQuit(wxCommandEvent& WXUNUSED(event)) { Close(TRUE); } void MainFrame::OnAbout(wxCommandEvent& WXUNUSED(event)) { wxMessageBox( _("Alex Olson\nProject 11"), _("About"), wxOK | wxICON_INFORMATION, this); } void MainPanel::OnCompute(wxCommandEvent& WXUNUSED(event)) { int startT; int endT; int newEndT; double tD; wxString startTString = start->GetValue(); wxString endTString = end->GetValue(); startT = wxAtoi(startTString); endT = wxAtoi(endTString); pC->GetValue().ToDouble(&tD); first.SetStartTime(startT); first.SetEndTime(endT); first.SetTimeDiff(tD); try { first.ValidateData(); newEndT = first.ComputeEndTime(); *newEnd << newEndT; } catch (BaseException& e) { wxMessageBox(_(e.GetMessage()), _("Something Went Wrong!"), wxOK | wxICON_INFORMATION, this); } } void MainPanel::OnClear(wxCommandEvent& WXUNUSED(event)) { start->Clear(); end->Clear(); pC->Clear(); newEnd->Clear(); }

  • mfc tab control switch tabs

    - by MRM
    I created a simple tab control that has 2 tabs (each tab is a different dialog). The thing is that i don't have any idea how to switch between tabs (when the user presses Titlu Tab1 to show the dialog i made for the first tab, and when it presses Titlu Tab2 to show my other dialog). I added a handler for changing items, but i don't know how should i acces some kind of index or child for tabs. Tab1.h and Tab2.h are headers for dialogs that show only static texts with the name of the each tab. There may be an obvious answer to my question, but i am a real newbie in c++ and MFC. This is my header: // CTabControlDlg.h : header file // #pragma once #include "afxcmn.h" #include "Tab1.h" #include "Tab2.h" // CCTabControlDlg dialog class CCTabControlDlg : public CDialog { // Construction public: CCTabControlDlg(CWnd* pParent = NULL); // standard constructor // Dialog Data enum { IDD = IDD_CTABCONTROL_DIALOG }; protected: virtual void DoDataExchange(CDataExchange* pDX); // DDX/DDV support // Implementation protected: HICON m_hIcon; // Generated message map functions virtual BOOL OnInitDialog(); afx_msg void OnSysCommand(UINT nID, LPARAM lParam); afx_msg void OnPaint(); afx_msg HCURSOR OnQueryDragIcon(); DECLARE_MESSAGE_MAP() public: CTabCtrl m_tabcontrol1; CTab1 m_tab1; CTab2 m_tab2; afx_msg void OnTcnSelchangeTabcontrol(NMHDR *pNMHDR, LRESULT *pResult); }; And this is the .cpp: // CTabControlDlg.cpp : implementation file // #include "stdafx.h" #include "CTabControl.h" #include "CTabControlDlg.h" #ifdef _DEBUG #define new DEBUG_NEW #endif // CAboutDlg dialog used for App About class CAboutDlg : public CDialog { public: CAboutDlg(); // Dialog Data enum { IDD = IDD_ABOUTBOX }; protected: virtual void DoDataExchange(CDataExchange* pDX); // DDX/DDV support // Implementation protected: DECLARE_MESSAGE_MAP() }; CAboutDlg::CAboutDlg() : CDialog(CAboutDlg::IDD) { } void CAboutDlg::DoDataExchange(CDataExchange* pDX) { CDialog::DoDataExchange(pDX); } BEGIN_MESSAGE_MAP(CAboutDlg, CDialog) END_MESSAGE_MAP() // CCTabControlDlg dialog CCTabControlDlg::CCTabControlDlg(CWnd* pParent /*=NULL*/) : CDialog(CCTabControlDlg::IDD, pParent) { m_hIcon = AfxGetApp()->LoadIcon(IDR_MAINFRAME); } void CCTabControlDlg::DoDataExchange(CDataExchange* pDX) { CDialog::DoDataExchange(pDX); DDX_Control(pDX, IDC_TABCONTROL, m_tabcontrol1); } BEGIN_MESSAGE_MAP(CCTabControlDlg, CDialog) ON_WM_SYSCOMMAND() ON_WM_PAINT() ON_WM_QUERYDRAGICON() //}}AFX_MSG_MAP ON_NOTIFY(TCN_SELCHANGE, IDC_TABCONTROL, &CCTabControlDlg::OnTcnSelchangeTabcontrol) END_MESSAGE_MAP() // CCTabControlDlg message handlers BOOL CCTabControlDlg::OnInitDialog() { CDialog::OnInitDialog(); // Add "About..." menu item to system menu. // IDM_ABOUTBOX must be in the system command range. • C#/.NET Little Wonders: The Timeout static class

    - by James Michael Hare
    Once again, in this series of posts I look at the parts of the .NET Framework that may seem trivial, but can help improve your code by making it easier to write and maintain. The index of all my past little wonders posts can be found here. When I started the “Little Wonders” series, I really wanted to pay homage to parts of the .NET Framework that are often small but can help in big ways. The item I have to discuss today really is a very small item in the .NET BCL, but once again I feel it can help make the intention of code much clearer and thus is worthy of note. The Problem - Magic numbers aren’t very readable or maintainable In my first Little Wonders Post (Five Little Wonders That Make Code Better) I mention the TimeSpan factory methods which, I feel, really help the readability of constructed TimeSpan instances. Just to quickly recap that discussion, ask yourself what the TimeSpan specified in each case below is 1: // Five minutes? Five Seconds? 2: var fiveWhat1 = new TimeSpan(0, 0, 5); 3: var fiveWhat2 = new TimeSpan(0, 0, 5, 0); 4: var fiveWhat3 = new TimeSpan(0, 0, 5, 0, 0); You’d think they’d all be the same unit of time, right? After all, most overloads tend to tack additional arguments on the end. But this is not the case with TimeSpan, where the constructor forms are: TimeSpan(int hours, int minutes, int seconds); TimeSpan(int days, int hours, int minutes, int seconds); TimeSpan(int days, int hours, int minutes, int seconds, int milliseconds); Notice how in the 4 and 5 parameter version we suddenly have the parameter days slipping in front of hours? This can make reading constructors like those above much harder. Fortunately, there are TimeSpan factory methods to help make your intention crystal clear: 1: // Ah! Much clearer! 2: var fiveSeconds = TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5); These are great because they remove all ambiguity from the reader! So in short, magic numbers in constructors and methods can be ambiguous, and anything we can do to clean up the intention of the developer will make the code much easier to read and maintain. Timeout – Readable identifiers for infinite timeout values In a similar way to TimeSpan, let’s consider specifying timeouts for some of .NET’s (or our own) many methods that allow you to specify timeout periods. For example, in the TPL Task class, there is a family of Wait() methods that can take TimeSpan or int for timeouts. Typically, if you want to specify an infinite timeout, you’d just call the version that doesn’t take a timeout parameter at all: 1: myTask.Wait(); // infinite wait But there are versions that take the int or TimeSpan for timeout as well: 1: // Wait for 100 ms 2: myTask.Wait(100); 3: 4: // Wait for 5 seconds 5: myTask.Wait(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5); Now, if we want to specify an infinite timeout to wait on the Task, we could pass –1 (or a TimeSpan set to –1 ms), which what the .NET BCL methods with timeouts use to represent an infinite timeout: 1: // Also infinite timeouts, but harder to read/maintain 2: myTask.Wait(-1); 3: myTask.Wait(TimeSpan.FromMilliseconds(-1)); However, these are not as readable or maintainable. If you were writing this code, you might make the mistake of thinking 0 or int.MaxValue was an infinite timeout, and you’d be incorrect. Also, reading the code above it isn’t as clear that –1 is infinite unless you happen to know that is the specified behavior. To make the code like this easier to read and maintain, there is a static class called Timeout in the System.Threading namespace which contains definition for infinite timeouts specified as both int and TimeSpan forms: Timeout.Infinite An integer constant with a value of –1 Timeout.InfiniteTimeSpan A static readonly TimeSpan which represents –1 ms (only available in .NET 4.5+) This makes our calls to Task.Wait() (or any other calls with timeouts) much more clear: 1: // intention to wait indefinitely is quite clear now 2: myTask.Wait(Timeout.Infinite); 3: myTask.Wait(Timeout.InfiniteTimeSpan); But wait, you may say, why would we care at all? Why not use the version of Wait() that takes no arguments? Good question! When you’re directly calling the method with an infinite timeout that’s what you’d most likely do, but what if you are just passing along a timeout specified by a caller from higher up? Or perhaps storing a timeout value from a configuration file, and want to default it to infinite? For example, perhaps you are designing a communications module and want to be able to shutdown gracefully, but if you can’t gracefully finish in a specified amount of time you want to force the connection closed. You could create a Shutdown() method in your class, and take a TimeSpan or an int for the amount of time to wait for a clean shutdown – perhaps waiting for client to acknowledge – before terminating the connection. So, assume we had a pub/sub system with a class to broadcast messages: 1: // Some class to broadcast messages to connected clients 2: public class Broadcaster 3: { 4: // ... 5: 6: // Shutdown connection to clients, wait for ack back from clients 7: // until all acks received or timeout, whichever happens first 8: public void Shutdown(int timeout) 9: { 10: // Kick off a task here to send shutdown request to clients and wait 11: // for the task to finish below for the specified time... 12: 13: if (!shutdownTask.Wait(timeout)) 14: { 15: // If Wait() returns false, we timed out and task 16: // did not join in time. 17: } 18: } 19: } We could even add an overload to allow us to use TimeSpan instead of int, to give our callers the flexibility to specify timeouts either way: 1: // overload to allow them to specify Timeout in TimeSpan, would 2: // just call the int version passing in the TotalMilliseconds... 3: public void Shutdown(TimeSpan timeout) 4: { 5: Shutdown(timeout.TotalMilliseconds); 6: } Notice in case of this class, we don’t assume the caller wants infinite timeouts, we choose to rely on them to tell us how long to wait. So now, if they choose an infinite timeout, they could use the –1, which is more cryptic, or use Timeout class to make the intention clear: 1: // shutdown the broadcaster, waiting until all clients ack back 2: // without timing out. 3: myBroadcaster.Shutdown(Timeout.Infinite); We could even add a default argument using the int parameter version so that specifying no arguments to Shutdown() assumes an infinite timeout: 1: // Modified original Shutdown() method to add a default of 2: // Timeout.Infinite, works because Timeout.Infinite is a compile 3: // time constant. 4: public void Shutdown(int timeout = Timeout.Infinite) 5: { 6: // same code as before 7: } Note that you can’t default the ShutDown(TimeSpan) overload with Timeout.InfiniteTimeSpan since it is not a compile-time constant. The only acceptable default for a TimeSpan parameter would be default(TimeSpan) which is zero milliseconds, which specified no wait, not infinite wait. Summary While Timeout.Infinite and Timeout.InfiniteTimeSpan are not earth-shattering classes in terms of functionality, they do give you very handy and readable constant values that you can use in your programs to help increase readability and maintainability when specifying infinite timeouts for various timeouts in the BCL and your own applications. • Saving State Dynamic UserControls...Help!

    - by Cognitronic
    I have page with a LinkButton on it that when clicked, I'd like to add a Usercontrol to the page. I need to be able to add/remove as many controls as the user would like. The Usercontrol consists of three dropdownlists. The first dropdownlist has it's auotpostback property set to true and hooks up the OnSelectedIndexChanged event that when fired will load the remaining two dropdownlists with the appropriate values. My problem is that no matter where I put the code in the host page, the usercontrol is not being loaded properly. I know I have to recreate the usercontrols on every postback and I've created a method that is being executed in the hosting pages OnPreInit method. I'm still getting the following error: The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases. Here is my code: Thank you!!!! bool createAgain = false; IList<FilterOptionsCollectionView> OptionControls { get { if (SessionManager.Current["controls"] != null) return (IList<FilterOptionsCollectionView>)SessionManager.Current["controls"]; else SessionManager.Current["controls"] = new List<FilterOptionsCollectionView>(); return (IList<FilterOptionsCollectionView>)SessionManager.Current["controls"]; } set { SessionManager.Current["controls"] = value; } } protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { Master.Page.Title = Title; LoadViewControls(Master.MainContent, Master.SideBar, Master.ToolBarContainer); } protected override void OnPreInit(EventArgs e) { base.OnPreInit(e); System.Web.UI.MasterPage m = Master; Control control = GetPostBackControl(this); if ((control != null && control.ClientID == (lbAddAndCondtion.ClientID) || createAgain)) { createAgain = true; CreateUserControl(control.ID); } } protected void AddAndConditionClicked(object o, EventArgs e) { var control = LoadControl("~/Views/FilterOptionsCollectionView.ascx"); OptionControls.Add((FilterOptionsCollectionView)control); control.ID = "options" + OptionControls.Count.ToString(); phConditions.Controls.Add(control); } public event EventHandler<Insight.Presenters.PageViewArg> OnLoadData; private Control FindControlRecursive(Control root, string id) { if (root.ID == id) { return root; } foreach (Control c in root.Controls) { Control t = FindControlRecursive(c, id); if (t != null) { return t; } } return null; } protected Control GetPostBackControl(System.Web.UI.Page page) { Control control = null; string ctrlname = Page.Request.Params["__EVENTTARGET"]; if (ctrlname != null && ctrlname != String.Empty) { control = FindControlRecursive(page, ctrlname.Split('$')[2]); } else { string ctrlStr = String.Empty; Control c = null; foreach (string ctl in Page.Request.Form) { if (ctl.EndsWith(".x") || ctl.EndsWith(".y")) { ctrlStr = ctl.Substring(0, ctl.Length - 2); c = page.FindControl(ctrlStr); } else { c = page.FindControl(ctl); } if (c is System.Web.UI.WebControls.CheckBox || c is System.Web.UI.WebControls.CheckBoxList) { control = c; break; } } } return control; } protected void CreateUserControl(string controlID) { try { if (createAgain && phConditions != null) { if (OptionControls.Count > 0) { phConditions.Controls.Clear(); foreach (var c in OptionControls) { phConditions.Controls.Add(c); } } } } catch (Exception ex) { throw ex; } } Here is the usercontrol's code: <%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="FilterOptionsCollectionView.ascx.cs" Inherits="Insight.Website.Views.FilterOptionsCollectionView" %> namespace Insight.Website.Views { [ViewStateModeById] public partial class FilterOptionsCollectionView : System.Web.UI.UserControl { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { } protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e) { LoadColumns(); ddlColumns.SelectedIndexChanged += new RadComboBoxSelectedIndexChangedEventHandler(ColumnsSelectedIndexChanged); base.OnInit(e); } protected void ColumnsSelectedIndexChanged(object o, EventArgs e) { LoadCriteria(); } public void LoadColumns() { ddlColumns.DataSource = User.GetItemSearchProperties(); ddlColumns.DataTextField = "SearchColumn"; ddlColumns.DataValueField = "CriteriaSearchControlType"; ddlColumns.DataBind(); LoadCriteria(); } private void LoadCriteria() { var controlType = User.GetItemSearchProperties()[ddlColumns.SelectedIndex].CriteriaSearchControlType; var ops = User.GetItemSearchProperties()[ddlColumns.SelectedIndex].ValidOperators; ddlOperators.DataSource = ops; ddlOperators.DataTextField = "key"; ddlOperators.DataValueField = "value"; ddlOperators.DataBind(); switch (controlType) { case ResourceStrings.ViewFilter_ControlTypes_DDL: criteriaDDL.Visible = true; criteriaText.Visible = false; var crit = User.GetItemSearchProperties()[ddlColumns.SelectedIndex].SearchCriteria; ddlCriteria.DataSource = crit; ddlCriteria.DataBind(); break; case ResourceStrings.ViewFilter_ControlTypes_Text: criteriaDDL.Visible = false; criteriaText.Visible = true; break; } } public event EventHandler OnColumnChanged; public ISearchCriterion FilterOptionsValues { get; set; } } }

  • Alpha Beta Search

    - by Becky
    I'm making a version of Martian Chess in java with AI and so far I THINK my move searching is semi-working, it seems to work alright for some depths but if I use a depth of 3 it returns a move for the opposite side...now the game is a bit weird because when a piece crosses half of the board, it becomes property of the other player so I think this is part of the problem. I'd be really greatful if someone could look over my code and point out any errors you think are there! (pls note that my evaluation function isn't nearly complete lol) MoveSearch.java public class MoveSearch { private Evaluation evaluate = new Evaluation(); private int blackPlayerScore, whitePlayerScore; • Java Cloud Service Integration using Web Service Data Control

    - by Jani Rautiainen
    Java Cloud Service (JCS) provides a platform to develop and deploy business applications in the cloud. In Fusion Applications Cloud deployments customers do not have the option to deploy custom applications developed with JDeveloper to ensure the integrity and supportability of the hosted application service. Instead the custom applications can be deployed to the JCS and integrated to the Fusion Application Cloud instance.This series of articles will go through the features of JCS, provide end-to-end examples on how to develop and deploy applications on JCS and how to integrate them with the Fusion Applications instance.In this article a custom application integrating with Fusion Application using Web Service Data Control will be implemented. v\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} o\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} w\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} .shape {behavior:url(#default#VML);} Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";} Pre-requisites Access to Cloud instance In order to deploy the application access to a JCS instance is needed, a free trial JCS instance can be obtained from Oracle Cloud site. To register you will need a credit card even if the credit card will not be charged. To register simply click "Try it" and choose the "Java" option. The confirmation email will contain the connection details. See this video for example of the registration. Once the request is processed you will be assigned 2 service instances; Java and Database. Applications deployed to the JCS must use Oracle Database Cloud Service as their underlying database. So when JCS instance is created a database instance is associated with it using a JDBC data source. The cloud services can be monitored and managed through the web UI. For details refer to Getting Started with Oracle Cloud. JDeveloper JDeveloper contains Cloud specific features related to e.g. connection and deployment. To use these features download the JDeveloper from JDeveloper download site by clicking the “Download JDeveloper 11.1.1.7.1 for ADF deployment on Oracle Cloud” link, this version of JDeveloper will have the JCS integration features that will be used in this article. For versions that do not include the Cloud integration features the Oracle Java Cloud Service SDK or the JCS Java Console can be used for deployment. For details on installing and configuring the JDeveloper refer to the installation guide. For details on SDK refer to Using the Command-Line Interface to Monitor Oracle Java Cloud Service and Using the Command-Line Interface to Manage Oracle Java Cloud Service. Create Application In this example the “JcsWsDemo” application created in the “Java Cloud Service Integration using Web Service Proxy” article is used as the base. Create Web Service Data Control In this example we will use a Web Service Data Control to integrate with Credit Rule Service in Fusion Applications. The data control will be used to query data from Fusion Applications using a web service call and present the data in a table. To generate the data control choose the “Model” project and navigate to "New -> All Technologies -> Business Tier -> Data Controls -> Web Service Data Control" and enter following: Name: CreditRuleServiceDC URL: https://ic-[POD].oracleoutsourcing.com/icCnSetupCreditRulesPublicService/CreditRuleService?WSDL Service: {{http://xmlns.oracle.com/apps/incentiveCompensation/cn/creditSetup/creditRule/creditRuleService/}CreditRuleService On step 2 select the “findRule” operation: Skip step 3 and on step 4 define the credentials to access the service. Do note that in this example these credentials are only used if testing locally, for JCS deployment credentials need to be manually updated on the EAR file: Click “Finish” and the proxy generation is done. Creating UI In order to use the data control we will need to populate complex objects FindCriteria and FindControl. For simplicity in this example we will create logic in a managed bean that populates the objects. Open “JcsWsDemoBean.java” and add the following logic: Map findCriteria; Map findControl; public void setFindCriteria(Map findCriteria) { this.findCriteria = findCriteria; } public Map getFindCriteria() { findCriteria = new HashMap(); findCriteria.put("fetchSize",10); findCriteria.put("fetchStart",0); return findCriteria; } public void setFindControl(Map findControl) { this.findControl = findControl; } public Map getFindControl() { findControl = new HashMap(); return findControl; } Open “JcsWsDemo.jspx”, navigate to “Data Controls -> CreditRuleServiceDC -> findRule(Object, Object) -> result” and drag and drop the “result” node into the “af:form” element in the page: On the “Edit Table Columns” remove all columns except “RuleId” and “Name”: On the “Edit Action Binding” window displayed enter reference to the java class created above by selecting “#{JcsWsDemoBean.findCriteria}”: Also define the value for the “findControl” by selecting “#{JcsWsDemoBean.findControl}”. Deploy to JCS For WS DC the authentication details need to be updated on the connection details before deploying. Open “connections.xml” by navigating “Application Resources -> Descriptors -> ADF META-INF -> connections.xml”: Change the user name and password entry from: <soap username="transportUserName" password="transportPassword" To match the access details for the target environment. Follow the same steps as documented in previous article ”Java Cloud Service ADF Web Application”. • Java implementing Exception Handling

    I am trying to implement an OutOfStockException for when the user attempts to buy more items than there are available. I'm not sure if my implementation is correct. Does this look OK to you? public class OutOfStockException extends Exception { public OutOfStockException(){ super(); } public OutOfStockException(String s){ super(s); } } This is the class where I need to test it: import javax.swing.JOptionPane; public class SwimItems { static final int MAX = 100; public static void main (String [] args) { Item [] items = new Item[MAX]; int numItems; numItems = fillFreebies(items); numItems += fillTaxable(items,numItems); numItems += fillNonTaxable(items,numItems); sellStuff(items, numItems); } private static int num(String which) { int n = 0; do { try{ n=Integer.parseInt(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter number of "+which+" items to add to stock:")); } catch(NumberFormatException nfe){ System.out.println("Number Format Exception in num method"); } } while (n < 1 || n > MAX/3); return n; } private static int fillFreebies(Item [] list) { int n = num("FREEBIES"); for (int i = 0; i < n; i++) try{ list [i] = new Item(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("What freebie item will you give away?"), Integer.parseInt(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("How many do you have?"))); } catch(NumberFormatException nfe){ System.out.println("Number Format Exception in fillFreebies method"); } catch(ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException e){ System.out.println("Array Index Out Of Bounds Exception in fillFreebies method"); } return n; } private static int fillTaxable(Item [] list, int number) { int n = num("Taxable Items"); for (int i = number ; i < n + number; i++) try{ list [i] = new TaxableItem(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("What taxable item will you sell?"), Double.parseDouble(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("How much will you charge (not including tax) for each?")), Integer.parseInt(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("How many do you have?"))); } catch(NumberFormatException nfe){ System.out.println("Number Format Exception in fillTaxable method"); } catch(ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException e){ System.out.println("Array Index Out Of Bounds Exception in fillTaxable method"); } return n; } private static int fillNonTaxable(Item [] list, int number) { int n = num("Non-Taxable Items"); for (int i = number ; i < n + number; i++) try{ list [i] = new SaleItem(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("What non-taxable item will you sell?"), Double.parseDouble(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("How much will you charge for each?")), Integer.parseInt(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("How many do you have?"))); } catch(NumberFormatException nfe){ System.out.println("Number Format Exception in fillNonTaxable method"); } catch(ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException e){ System.out.println("Array Index Out Of Bounds Exception in fillNonTaxable method"); } return n; } private static String listEm(Item [] all, int n, boolean numInc) { String list = "Items: "; for (int i = 0; i < n; i++) { try{ list += "\n"+ (i+1)+".   • Bound Command not firing on another viewModel? What Am I doing wrong?

    - by devnet247
    Hi I cannot seem to bind a command to a button.I have a treeview on the left showing Country City etc.. And I tabcontrol on the right. do I This uses 4 viewModels rootviewModel-ContinentViewModel-CountryViewModel-CityViewModel What I am building is based on http://www.codeproject.com/KB/WPF/TreeViewWithViewModel.aspx Now on one of the tabs I have a Toolbar with a button "TestButton" that I have mapped in zaml. This does not fire! The reason is not firing is because I m binding the RootViewModel but the command that is bound in zaml is in the cityViewModel. How Do I pass the datacontext from one view to the other? or how do I make the button fire. I need the command to be in the cityViewModel. Any Suggestions on how I bind it? View "WorldExplorerView" where I bind the main DataContext public partial class WorldExplorerView { public WorldExplorerView() { InitializeComponent(); var continents = Database.GetContinents(); var rootViewModel = new RootViewModel(continents); DataContext = rootViewModel; } } CityViewModel public class CityViewModel : TreeViewItemViewModel { private City _city; private RelayCommand _testCommand; public CityViewModel(City city, CountryViewModel countryViewModel):base(countryViewModel,false) { _city = city; } Properties etc...... public ICommand TestCommand { get { if(_testCommand==null) { _testCommand = new RelayCommand(param => GetTestCommand(), param => CanCallTestCommand); ; } return _testCommand; } } protected bool CanCallTestCommand { get { return true; } } private static void GetTestCommand() { MessageBox.Show("It works"); } } ZAML <DockPanel> <DockPanel LastChildFill="True"> <StatusBar DockPanel.Dock="Bottom"> <StatusBarItem Content="Status Bar" ></StatusBarItem> </StatusBar> <Grid DockPanel.Dock="Top"> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition/> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"/> <ColumnDefinition Width="2*"/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <TreeView Name="tree" ItemsSource="{Binding Continents}"> <TreeView.ItemContainerStyle> </TreeView.ItemContainerStyle> <TreeView.Resources> <HierarchicalDataTemplate DataType="{x:Type ViewModels:ContinentViewModel}" ItemsSource="{Binding Children}"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal">
<TextBlock Text="{Binding ContinentName}"/> </StackPanel> </HierarchicalDataTemplate> <HierarchicalDataTemplate DataType="{x:Type ViewModels:CountryViewModel}" ItemsSource="{Binding Children}"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal">
<TextBlock Text="{Binding CountryName}"/> </StackPanel> </HierarchicalDataTemplate> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type ViewModels:CityViewModel}" > <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal">
<TextBlock Text="{Binding CityName}"/> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> </TreeView.Resources> </TreeView> <GridSplitter Grid.Row="0" Grid.Column="1" Background="LightGray" Width="5" HorizontalAlignment="Stretch" VerticalAlignment="Stretch"/> <Grid Grid.Column="2" Margin="5" > <TabControl> <TabItem Header="Demo"> <DockPanel LastChildFill="True"> <ToolBar DockPanel.Dock="Top">   </ToolBar> <TextBox></TextBox> </DockPanel> </TabItem> <TabItem Header="Details" DataContext="{Binding Path=SelectedItem.City, ElementName=tree, Mode=OneWay}"> <StackPanel > <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" FontSize="12" Text="{Binding CityName}"/> <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" FontSize="12" Text="{Binding Area}"/> <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" FontSize="12" Text="{Binding Population}"/> <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" FontSize="12" Text="{Binding CityDetailsInfo.ClubsCount}"/> <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" FontSize="12" Text="{Binding CityDetailsInfo.PubsCount}"/> </StackPanel> </TabItem> </TabControl> </Grid> </Grid> </DockPanel> </DockPanel>

  • The Shift: how Orchard painlessly shifted to document storage, and how it’ll affect you

    - by Bertrand Le Roy
    We’ve known it all along. The storage for Orchard content items would be much more efficient using a document database than a relational one. Orchard content items are composed of parts that serialize naturally into infoset kinds of documents. Storing them as relational data like we’ve done so far was unnatural and requires the data for a single item to span multiple tables, related through 1-1 relationships. This means lots of joins in queries, and a great potential for Select N+1 problems. Document databases, unfortunately, are still a tough sell in many places that prefer the more familiar relational model. Being able to x-copy Orchard to hosters has also been a basic constraint in the design of Orchard. Combine those with the necessity at the time to run in medium trust, and with license compatibility issues, and you’ll find yourself with very few reasonable choices. So we went, a little reluctantly, for relational SQL stores, with the dream of one day transitioning to document storage. We have played for a while with the idea of building our own document storage on top of SQL databases, and Sébastien implemented something more than decent along those lines, but we had a better way all along that we didn’t notice until recently… In Orchard, there are fields, which are named properties that you can add dynamically to a content part. Because they are so dynamic, we have been storing them as XML into a column on the main content item table. This infoset storage and its associated API are fairly generic, but were only used for fields. The breakthrough was when Sébastien realized how this existing storage could give us the advantages of document storage with minimal changes, while continuing to use relational databases as the substrate. public bool CommercialPrices { get { return this.Retrieve(p => p.CommercialPrices); } set { this.Store(p => p.CommercialPrices, value); } } This code is very compact and efficient because the API can infer from the expression what the type and name of the property are. It is then able to do the proper conversions for you. For this code to work in a content part, there is no need for a record at all. This is particularly nice for site settings: one query on one table and you get everything you need. This shows how the existing infoset solves the data storage problem, but you still need to query. Well, for those properties that need to be filtered and sorted on, you can still use the current record-based relational system. This of course continues to work. We do however provide APIs that make it trivial to store into both record properties and the infoset storage in one operation: public double Price { get { return Retrieve(r => r.Price); } set { Store(r => r.Price, value); } } This code looks strikingly similar to the non-record case above. The difference is that it will manage both the infoset and the record-based storages. The call to the Store method will send the data in both places, keeping them in sync. The call to the Retrieve method does something even cooler: if the property you’re looking for exists in the infoset, it will return it, but if it doesn’t, it will automatically look into the record for it. And if that wasn’t cool enough, it will take that value from the record and store it into the infoset for the next time it’s required. This means that your data will start automagically migrating to infoset storage just by virtue of using the code above instead of the usual: public double Price { get { return Record.Price; } set { Record.Price = value; } } As your users browse the site, it will get faster and faster as Select N+1 issues will optimize themselves away. If you preferred, you could still have explicit migration code, but it really shouldn’t be necessary most of the time. If you do already have code using QueryHints to mitigate Select N+1 issues, you might want to reconsider those, as with the new system, you’ll want to avoid joins that you don’t need for filtering or sorting, further optimizing your queries. There are some rare cases where the storage of the property must be handled differently. Check out this string[] property on SearchSettingsPart for example: public string[] SearchedFields { get { return (Retrieve<string>("SearchedFields") ?? "") .Split(new[] {',', ' '}, StringSplitOptions.RemoveEmptyEntries); } set { Store("SearchedFields", String.Join(", ", value)); } } The array of strings is transformed by the property accessors into and from a comma-separated list stored in a string. The Retrieve and Store overloads used in this case are lower-level versions that explicitly specify the type and name of the attribute to retrieve or store. You may be wondering what this means for code or operations that look directly at the database tables instead of going through the new infoset APIs. Even if there is a record, the infoset version of the property will win if it exists, so it is necessary to keep the infoset up-to-date. It’s not very complicated, but definitely something to keep in mind. Here is what a product record looks like in Nwazet.Commerce for example: And here is the same data in the infoset: The infoset is stored in Orchard_Framework_ContentItemRecord or Orchard_Framework_ContentItemVersionRecord, depending on whether the content type is versionable or not. A good way to find what you’re looking for is to inspect the record table first, as it’s usually easier to read, and then get the item record of the same id. Here is the detailed XML document for this product: <Data> <ProductPart Inventory="40" Price="18" Sku="pi-camera-box" OutOfStockMessage="" AllowBackOrder="false" Weight="0.2" Size="" ShippingCost="null" IsDigital="false" /> <ProductAttributesPart Attributes="" /> <AutoroutePart DisplayAlias="camera-box" /> <TitlePart Title="Nwazet Pi Camera Box" /> <BodyPart Text="[...]" /> <CommonPart CreatedUtc="2013-09-10T00:39:00Z" PublishedUtc="2013-09-14T01:07:47Z" /> </Data> The data is neatly organized under each part. It is easy to see how that document is all you need to know about that content item, all in one table. If you want to modify that data directly in the database, you should be careful to do it in both the record table and the infoset in the content item record. In this configuration, the record is now nothing more than an index, and will only be used for sorting and filtering. Of course, it’s perfectly fine to mix record-backed properties and record-less properties on the same part. It really depends what you think must be sorted and filtered on. In turn, this potentially simplifies migrations considerably. So here it is, the great shift of Orchard to document storage, something that Orchard has been designed for all along, and that we were able to implement with a satisfying and surprising economy of resources. Expect this code to make its way into the 1.8 version of Orchard when that’s available.

  • Correct way to edit and update complex viewmodel objects using asp.net-mvc2 and entity framework

    - by jslatts
    I have a table in my database with a one to many relationship to another table: ParentObject ID Name Description ChildObject ID Name Description ParentObjectID AnotherObjectID The objects are mapped into Entity Framework and exposed through a data access class. It seemed like ViewModels are recommended when the data to be displayed greatly differs from the domain object, so I created a ViewModel as follows: public class ViewModel { public IList<ParentObject> ParentObjects { get; set; } public ParentObject selectedObject { get; set; } public IList<ChildObject> ChildObjects { get; set; } } I have a view that displays a list of ParentObjects and when clicked will allow a ChildObject to be modified saved. <% using (Html.BeginForm()) { %>
<% foreach (var parent in Model.ParentObjects) { %>

ObjectID [<%= Html.Encode(parent.ID)%>]

<%= Html.Encode(parent.Name)%>

<%= Html.Encode(parent.Description)%>

<% } %>
<% if (Model.ParentObject != null) { %>
Name:
<%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.ParentObject.Name) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.ParentObject.Name, "*")%>

Description:
<%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.ParentObject.Description) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.ParentObject.Description, "*")%>

Child Objects
<% for (int i = 0; i < Model.ParentObject.ChildObjects.Count(); i++) { %>
<%= Html.DisplayTextFor(sd => sd.ChildObjects[i].Name) %>

<%= Html.HiddenFor(sd => sd.ChildObjects[i].ID )%> <%= Html.TextBoxFor( sd => sd.ChildObjects[i].Description) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(sd => sd.ChildObjects[i].Description, "*") %>
<% } } } %> This all works fine. My question is around the best way to update the EF objects and persist the changes back to the database. I initially tried: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Edit(ViewModel viewModel) { ParentObject parent = myRepository.GetParentObjectByID(viewModel.SelectedObject.ID); if ((!ModelState.IsValid) || !TryUpdateModel(parent, "SelectedObject", new[] { "Name", "Description" })) { || !TryUpdateModel(parent.ChildObjects, "ChildObjects", new[] { "Name", "Description" })) { //Code to handle failure and return the current model snipped return View(viewModel); } myRepository.Save(); return RedirectToAction("Edit"); } When I try to save a change to the child object, I get this exception: Entities in 'MyEntities.ChildObject' participate in the 'FK_ChildObject_AnotherObject' relationship. 0 related 'AnotherObject' were found. 1 'AnotherObject' is expected. Investigation on StackOverflow and generally googling led me to this blog post that seems to describe my problem: TryUpdateModel() does not correctly handle nested collections. Apparently, (and stepping through the debugger confirms this) it creates a new ChildObject instead of associating with the EF objects from my instantiated context. My hacky work around is this: if (viewModel.ChildObjects.Count > 0) { foreach (ChildObject modelChildObject in viewModel.ChildObjects) { ChildObject childToUpdate = ParentObject.ChildObject.Where(a => a.ID == modelChildObject.ID).First(); childToUpdate.Name = modelChildObject.Name; } } This seems to work fine. My question to you good folks: Is there correct way to do this? I tried following the suggestion for making a custom model binder per the blog link I posted above but it didn't work (there was an issue with reflection) and I needed to get something going ASAP. PS - I tried to cleanup the code to hide specific information, so beware I may have hosed something up. I mainly just want to know if other people have solved this problem. Thanks!

  • Strange WPF ListBox Behavior

    - by uncle-harvey
    I’m trying to bind a List of items to a listbox in WPF. The items are grouped by one value and each group is to be housed in an expander. Everything works fine when I don’t use any custom styles. However, when I use custom styles (which work properly with non-grouped items and as independent controls) the binding doesn’t display any items. Below is the code I’m executing. Any ideas why the items won’t show up in the Expander? • Varnish default.vcl grace period

    - by Vladimir
    These are my settings for a grace period (/etc/varnish/default.vcl) sub vcl_recv { .... set req.grace = 360000s; ... } sub vcl_fetch { ... set beresp.grace = 360000s; ... } I tested Varnish using localhost and nodejs as a server. I started localhost, the site was up. Then I disconnected server and the site got disconnected in less than 2 min.
