• Ubuntu not booting from USB on laptop (no optical drive)

  I'm using a Kingston 16GB USB, with the Unetbootin program. (I've tried both downloading the installation iso manually and adding it, or using the program to download.) I've tried creating the bootable USB on an iMac, the laptop and also a desktop. I've booted into the setup of the laptop and changed the boot order to make sure it boots from that drive first. (There is no optical drive so that isn't a problem.) It's an Acer Aspire AS3810TZ. Upon booting it gives this message: SYSLINUX 4.03 2010-10-22 EDD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al I get this no matter how I create the USB, it just sits there. I left the laptop for an hour and it hadn't moved. I've also tried on a different 4GB USB (Generic) and that did the same.

• Ubuntu 11.10 momentarily freezes every couple minutes

  I'm working on an Acer Aspire One D257 running Ubuntu 11.10, and every few minutes the laptop freezes up for a second or two, before becoming responsive again. This doesn't really present a huge problem, but when I'm trying to code all of a sudden vim stops responding for a couple seconds while I'm trying to modify my code, it's increasingly frustrating. The odd part is, if I play a movie in VLC at the same time, when vim pauses the video keeps playing just fine (VLC's priority is not modified). I'm wondering if anyone knows why this may be happening, or in lieu of that, how I might be able to track down the source of my frustrating pauses. Normally I would try using top, but the pauses are shorter than 2 seconds so nothing unusual shows up in top as consuming the CPU. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot intermittent repeating 1 second long pauses in vim?

• does not boot after install, my troubleshooting and google fu have failed me

  I can only get an install to "stick" if I use shred to zerofill my drive first. Otherwise, when I install ubuntu or lubuntu 12.04, I will get "grub rescue: out of disk". With the aforementioned (completely default) install on top of a zerofilled drive, then rebooting after installing updates will tell me there is no operating system. I don't even get to grub. Installing on top of the failed install, while choosing "erase ubuntu 12.04 and reinstall", I get the grub rescue: out of disk error. The hard drive has been repeatedly tested and does not have any read or write errors. I've used check disk for errors on the pen drive I'm installing from and it comes up clean as well. The system is an inspiron 6000, with 1gb ram and a 250 gb hard drive. I'm typing this from a live cd on the same machine. What gives?

• System crashes when internet connection is unplugged

  When i first tried to install any ubuntu newer than 10.04 on my netbook (Acer aspire one 722 11,6" WXGA - C-60 Dual Core APU - AMD Radeon HD 6250 - 1x HDMI - 2GB DDR3 - 320GB - 802.11bgN - 6CELL2.2 - BT 3.0 - VGA Webcam), it would fail to boot. I found out that the only fix to this was linking it to the internet via lan-cable during the installation. However, after installing ubuntu 12.04 successfully my system is crashing everytime i unplug the lan-cable. My first thought was disabling the netbook´s w-lan (via the band at the top) but it was not fixing the problem. Looking on the taskmanager ('top') during the process brought no further insight, no process was exploding or something like that. As i am out of guesses help would be really appreaciated.   I developed an application using Windows Form in C++ (IDE MSVC 2010). Some part of application also has MFC, and OpenCv. I want to send the application to my cleint for interim testing on his own machine. I have not developed any installer for the same, and so I will be sending him the.EXE file. I want that the client should not face any difficulty in replicating the experiment, and thus saves his time. Can somebody suggest me what all softwares(such as, MSVC, .NET Framework, Windows SDK etc) should already be installed on the client's machine for successfull testing of the application? Note: OS (Windows 7) and hardware is exactly same at both sides.

  I have a site that lists offers, promotions from other websites. Since the offers expire rather quickly I don't save them into my database. I see no point in having a page from 2010 about 30% discount on a certain brand of shoes which isn't availabe anymore. A visitor enters my website; He clicks on the "shoes" category; http://www.mysite.com/shoes/ Here he sees 20 available promotions from different online stores. He clicks on a promotion and gets to a page like this: http://www.mysite.com/shoes/promotions/prada Questions: I use the template promotions.php and list all the promotions. /promotions/prada/ /promotions/otherbrand/ .... What I do is use "noindex, follow" for the links. Is that a good idea? Or should I use rel="canonical" for the promotion page? How do you advise me to handle this from the SEO point of view?

  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information First of all, I am a proponent of SharePoint apps. As I have said many times over, SharePoint Apps make me very ‘appy, they are very app-propriate. But there are some points to consider that make a bit app-rehensive. These are all mentioned in my book “SharePoint 2013 - Planet of the Apps”, .. but here are some thoughts of the negatives of Apps that I think we need to consider before diving in, Mutliple Servers, More Complexity Apps, by definition will include an extra server. This excludes SharePoint-hosted apps of course. Extra servers by definition will add more complexity. As it is, when you introduce SharePoint to an organization, the number of servers multiply like bunnies. Now you will have additional servers, and these servers talking with each other. • Tunnels in pseudo 3D racing game

  How would one go about doing tunnels in a pseudo 3D racing game ? The main problem I have at the moment is perspective - I cant think of a way, beyond having to Z sort the sprites and tunnel coordinates, so that vehicles are displayed in front of the tunnel entrance and somehow block the display when out of site. I would like my tunnels to be used on both flat, curved and hills and slopes. The tunnel enterance/exit is made up of 3 separate graphics, (left, right and top), whilst inside the tunnel it is just one line graphic along the top (the idea being its supposed to be a set distance above the current vertical road position). As you can see from the picture, the vehicles are still being rendered whilst in the tunnel. I've converted the Code Incomplete road system to GLBasic.

  I've noticed that NetworkManager only has a single, left or right, click menu and no longer has an About menu option to show it's splash screen. In fact all the top bar mini short cut icons have been amputated and crippled leaving them with no rights. This severely impacts on our custom aps., similar to FireFox bookmarks, which can no longer be right clicked to bring up a context menu. It is possible to disengage FF's File|Edit|... menu bar from the top by running it in safe-mode so the menu bar is resident in a window, restoring right clicks, but our aps. do not have "safe modes". How can right clicks in menu bars be restored? reference

• Horizontal title bar shadow while in full screen

  While in full screen the horizontal shadow of the title bar (I am not too sure about its name) appears on top of everything. How can I get rid of it? It's quite distracting while coding in Guake mode and annoying while watching movies. In the picture I've setup Guake with some transparency (that's why you can see things underneath), but the shadow is on the top of everything while I am in fullscreen. This, as I have already said, happens to me both while I am watching movies or programming in fullscreen mode. This usually happens after awaking the laptop from hibernation. Now it looks like it has gone, but I am still wandering if someone knows something about it. And here back it is :[ I'm running Ubuntu 13.04

• How to reset Compiz/Unity to defaults?

  I tried to activate some compiz effect via ccsm (I think wobbly windows) and compiz crashed and froze up the screen. So I used the Control+Alt+Backspace keystroke to force logout. Then I logged back in. Unity wasn't there, just a (non-unity) panel at the top with file, edit, and the like. I was able to pull up a terminal and launch ccsm, only to find almost all settings wiped out. I turned everything back on that I thought should be on, but I don't know if I got everything. Also, now whenever I open up a non-maximized window, it opens up in the top left corner with the title bar behind the unity panel. So what I need is a list of everything that needs to be on in ccsm, and a way to get windows to NOT open in the corner, preferably without having to reset unity or compiz.
