• How would you model an objects representing different phases of an entity life cycle?

  I believe the scenario is common mostly in business workflows - for example: loan management the process starts with a loan application, then there's the loan offer, the 'live' loan, and maybe also finished loans. all these objects are related, and share many fields all these objects have also many fields that are unique for each entity the variety of objects maybe large, and the transformation between the may not be linear (for example: a single loan application may end up as several loans of different types) How would you model this? some options: an entity for each type, each containing the relevant fields (possibly grouping related fields as sub entities) - leads to duplication of data. an entity for each object, but instead of duplicating data, each object has a reference to it's predecessor (the loan doesn't contain the loaner details, but a reference to the loan application) - this causes coupling between the object structure, and the way it was created. if we change the loan application, it shouldn't effect the structure of the loan entity. one large entity, with fields for the whole life cycle - this can create 'mega objects' with many fields. it also doesn't work well when there's a one to many or many to many relation between the phases.

• Do the benefits of Resin/Quercus outweigh the overhead?

  Lately, I've been looking more and more into Resin + Quercus as a technology to develop an application of mine. The reason I started looking into it was that this application has high reporting needs, a lot of which cannot (or realistically, should not) be created in real-time. Java would offer a nice backend to queue and generate reports. Also, with Quercus I would be able to develop my data models in Hibernate, and use them "from PHP", thus effectively stretching these models across front and back-end. This same concept would also apply to any front/back-end common business logic, which could be developed in Java libraries. Now, the downside is that whichever front-end (PHP) MVC Framework I choose (my goal was Symfony 2), it is unlikely to work without some heavy modification, if it can work at all. Quercus is a pretty close implementation of PHP, and is supposed to be compatible with PHP5.3, so namespaces and closures SHOULDN'T be a problem, but when I tried to run an existing Symfony 1.4 app, I failed miserably. So, my question to you is, do you think the benefits of Resin + Quercus outweigh the overhead of using a not-so-perfect/stable implementation of PHP? If this were your application, and your goal was and end-product, rather than educational purposes, what would you decide?

• How to refactor to cleaner version of maintaing states of the widget

  Backstory I inherited a bunch of code that I'd like to refactor. It is a UI application written in javascript. Current state: We have main application which consist of several UI components. And each component has entry fields, textboxes, menus, etc), like "ticket", "customer information", etc. Based on input, where the application was called from, who is the user, we enable/disable, hide, show, change titles. Unfortunately, the app grew to the point where it is really hard to scale, add new features. Main the driver (application code) calls set/unset functions of the respective components. So a lot of the stuff look like this Main app unit function1() { **call_function2()** component1.setX(true); component1.setY(true); component2.setX(false); } call_function2() { // it may repeat some of the code function1 called } and we have a lot of this in the main union. I am cleaning this mess. What is the best way to maintain the state of widgets? Please let me know if you need me to clarify.

• Maintaining C/C++/Java skills as a web developer

  When I was in college I learned how to program in C, C++, and Java. Currently, I'm a web developer using front end and back end technologies (HTML/CSS/JS, PHP, MYSQL). While the sorting algorithms and OOP concepts that I learned in college can be applied to web development, I'm looking for ways to keep up my knowledge of all languages. I enjoy programming in C-Style (C/C++/Java) languages and front-end/back-end technologies. Unfortunately, there aren't many options to use C-style languages to build websites. However, I would like to keep up my knowledge and skills in the languages I learned in college as I know they will continue to help me with my growth. What resources are available to keep challenging myself in C-style languages that are relevant to web development? Would contract work for C-style languages be beneficial? Are there sites that offer algorithm challenges? Any help is appreciated. I'm also interested in how others that have asked themselves this have solved this problem.

• Changing the Default Install Location of an MSI

  A few months ago, I had to tweak an MSI installer.  It was installing into a specific directory (named the same as the application) underneath Program Files.  Since the location of Program Files can change from machine to machine, the MSI has a special token you can use for Program Files (as well as for the application name).  So the current value for “DefaultLocation” of the Application Folder was: [ProgramFilesFolder]\[ProductName] During installation, these tokens would be replaced by the actual location based on the current machine. I needed to change this to a specific folder underneath the users My Documents directory.  I poked around the help file and I could not find where these special tokens (like “[ProgramFilesFolder]”) were defined.  Obviously, there must be some specific set of values that are available and I’m sure My Documents is one of them. I finally found them documented so I’m posting the link here.  Hopefully, it will help someone else out.  Not sure where I found this link… System Folder Properties For me, it was as easy as changing the DefaultLocation to: [PersonalFolder]\MyToolName\Application Technorati Tags: .NET,MSI

• ASP.NET MVC Cookbook - public review

  I have recently started writing another book.  The topic of this book is ASP.NET MVC.  This book differs from my previous book in that rather than working towards building one project from end to end - this book will demonstrate specific topics from end to end.  It is a recipe book (hence the cookbook name) and will be part of the Packt Publishing cookbook series.  An example recipe in this book might be how to consume JSON, creating a master /details page, jquery modal popups, custom ActionResults, etc.  Basically anything recipe oriented around the topic of ASP.NET MVC might be acceptable.  If you are interested in helping out with the review process you can join the "ASP.NET MVC 2 Cookbook-review" group on Google here: http://groups.google.com/group/aspnet-mvc-2-cookbook-review Currently the suggested TOC for the project is listed.  Also, chapters 1, 2, and most of 8 are posted.  Chapter 5 should be available tonight or tomorrow.   Instead of creating a fullblown NetBeans Platform application for doing WYSIWYG editing for EPUB, similar to Sigil, I decided to focus purely on the very narrow scope of EPUB reading. The scope is narrower and, since the application will be a lot less ambitious and smaller, a pure JavaFX implementation makes sense. When you somehow get, e.g., buy, an EPUB file, you typically read it on a tablet or mobile device. However, some people in the world, e.g., me, still have laptops. Therefore, I'm creating a small JavaFX application that unzips EPUB files, into a temp directory, and then loads them into a JavaFX WebView. Arabic support: For an application like this, simplicity is the most important thing. Very few buttons, very few options, preferably no configuration of anything. Just let the user open the EPUB file and read it, that's it, nothing fancy. CSS stylesheets and images are correctly read. It's exactly what it looks like, a reader for EPUB files. The back and forward buttons are working and you can also switch to the table of contents. When it is complete, which it pretty much is right now, publishers of EPUB files can make this small app available from their site, to simplify life for their readers, since it will run easily and well on all operating systems.

• How do I automatically start Clamz with AMZ files for Amazon MP3 downloads?

  Chromium can open downloaded files with the default application (e.g. PDF in Evince). In my setup a downloaded .AMZ (for Amazon MP3) always opened with Gedit. However I would like to have all downloaded .amz files to autromatically open with Clamz, a command line tool for downloading that works like a charm. As in Nautilus my .amz files were associated to open with Gedit too I thought it was a good idea to add a clamz.desktop file in ~/.local/share/applications (according to this answer) [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=Clamz Comment=Open AMZ files for Amazon MP3 download Exec=/usr/bin/clamz %u Terminal=True Type=Application Icon= Categories=Application; StartupNotify=true MimeType=audio/x-amzxml; NoDisplay=true This lets me choose Clamz as default application in Nautilus. But when opening an .amz file in Nautilus it still does not open with Clamz as expected but is treated as an executable text file instead (note that the executable bit is not set!). Is there any other way to make Chromium or Nautilus always open an .amz file with Clamz? Did I miss to change setting in another place?

• Bad previous code. To fix or not to fix?

  As a freelancer programmer I am often asked to edit part of an application source code in order to add functionalities, fix bugs etc. While I'm on my adventure journey to study the source to do what I'm asked correctly I run into code like: World::User* GetWorld() { map<DWORD,World*>::iterator it = mapWld.find( m_userWorldId ) if( it != mapWld.end() ) return &it->second; return NULL; } if( pUser->GetWorld()->GetId() == 250 ) If I investigate further I end up finding that the DWORD class member of User, userWorldId can be a value non-found in the map mapWld, which will lead to a casuality as also known as crash! The obviously valid way to do it is: World* pWorld = pUser->GetWorld(); if( pWorld && pWorld->GetId() == 250 )//... Sometimes when it's something just 'small' I end up sort of 'fixing' it. But sometimes when I'm on a 500 thousand line source code and this kind of code is everywhere there is no much can do. The question is if it's politically correct to fix some of these things. Think of it; You are not paid to fix it. Perhaps you think it's right, but it was necessarily done that way for some reason and you should not be messing with it. You do not have authorization, you do not own the source and none of the copyrights belong to you. You have authorization to edit issues accordingly to the owners but you're in a hurry, you have many other projects to do, it's the end of the month, you must pay the bills. Sincerely, I think of it as seeing an animal die from a disease in front of you, you have the cure in your hands but you do nothing. What is the best to do in this scenario?

• Any good reason to open files in text mode?

  (Almost-)POSIX-compliant operating systems and Windows are known to distinguish between 'binary mode' and 'text mode' file I/O. While the former mode doesn't transform any data between the actual file or stream and the application, the latter 'translates' the contents to some standard format in a platform-specific manner: line endings are transparently translated to '\n' in C, and some platforms (CP/M, DOS and Windows) cut off a file when a byte with value 0x1A is found. These transformations seem a little useless to me. People share files between computers with different operating systems. Text mode would cause some data to be handled differently across some platforms, so when this matters, one would probably use binary mode instead. As an example: while Windows uses the sequence CR LF to end a line in text mode, UNIX text mode will not treat CR as part of the line ending sequence. Applications would have to filter that noise themselves. Older Mac versions only use CR in text mode as line endings, so neither UNIX nor Windows would understand its files. If this matters, a portable application would probably implement the parsing by itself instead of using text mode. Implementing newline interpretation in the parser might also remove some overhead of using text mode, as buffers would need to be rewritten (and possibly resized) before returning to the application, while this may be less efficient than when it would happen in the application instead. So, my question is: is there any good reason to still rely on the host OS to translate line endings and file truncation?

• What is an efficient algorithm for randomly assigning a pool of objects to a parent using specific rules

  I need some expert answers to help me determine the most efficient algorithm in this scenario. Consider the following data structures: type B { A parent; } type A { set<B> children; integer minimumChildrenAllowed; integer maximumChildrenAllowed; } I have a situation where I need to fetch all the orphan children (there could be hundreds of thousands of these) and assign them RANDOMLY to A type parents based on the following rules. At the end of the job, there should be no orphans left At the end of the job, no object A should have less children than its predesignated minimum. At the end of the job, no object A should have more children than its predesignated maximum. If we run out of A objects then we should create a new A with default values for minimum and maximum and assign remaining orphans to these objects. The distribution of children should be as evenly distributed as possible. There may already be some children assigned to A before the job starts. I was toying with how to do this but I am afraid that I would just end up looping across the parents sorted from smallest to largest, and then grab an orphan for each parent. I was wondering if there is a more efficient way to handle this?

• What kind of redirect (301 or 302) for an email links tracker?

  We are developing an email sending application ("à la" Mailchimp). Hyperlinks inserted by our users, in the emails they want to send, are replaced by a tracking URL on our application (https://ourdomain.com/trackingurl?blablabla) which then redirects the email reader to the original URL our users included in their emails. This allows us to record statistics about link clicks. Until now, we used 301 for those redirections, but we noticed that Google began indexing pages on our application which are in fact redirects to other domains. (The title and snippet in Google results are from the other domain, but the link in green is from our application). We took action by adding those urls to our robots.txt, but Google seems to take forever (months!) before removing them for its index and removing them by hand in Webmaster Tools would take a lot of time since there are lot. I would like to know which kind of HTTP redirect (301 or 302) is best suited for this kind of opreation ? Do you think switching to 302 redirects could improve this situation since we don't really want Google to index redirected links from our clients emails ?

• Virtualbox errors out when creating or opening VM

  I installed Virtual-box about a week ago and now every time I either try to start a VM or create a new one I get the error listed below. I am in the vboxusers group. I completely uninstalled and re-installed the application without any change in the error. When I run the command below I receive "command not found". Then when I try to install dkms they systems says it is already installed. Right now I have removed the application and any files and would love to re-install the application again to get it working. I remove the application using: sudo apt-get remove virtualbox* --purge Any ideas? Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. • Observing MVC, can/should the Model be instantiated in the ViewController? Or where?

  I'm writing an experimental iPhone app to learn about the MVC paradigm. I instantiate my Model class in the ViewController class. Is this stupid? I'm asking because storing the id of the Model class, and using it works where it's initialized, but referring to it later (in response to an interface action) crashes. Seemingly, the pointer address of my Model class instance changes, but how can that be? • What tools do I have to disuade users from using the same password with similar systems?

  I'm building a web application that connects to other web services (using strictly anonymous binding, so no user passwords are being used). However the web application maintains its own users itself, and is required to ask certain details such as e-mail addresses and public linking information to these other web services (for example, a username but not a password). I want to deter or prevent users from reusing passwords in my application that they have also used in the applications I'm linking to. For example, if I ask for their e-mail and provide me with their gmail address, I don't want them using their gmail password for my system. Another example would be reusing a password to a linked system in which they also gave me their username. One idea I had was to simply try using the information they gave me, along with the password they are trying to store and log in to these external web applications to test the password - then immediately unbind if I was successful and ask the user to use a different password. However I suspect there is a host of morale and legal issues there. The reason this is a big deal to me is accountability. My application is simply not funded enough to invest properly in security around user passwords. A salted, hashed password in a public SQL-like database is as secure as it gets. So if passwords and linked usernames or e-mails get out, I don't want my userbase compromised.

• Matlab Image watermarking question , using both SVD and DWT

  Hello all . here is a code that i got over the net ,and it is supposed to embed a watermark of size(50*20) called _copyright.bmp in the Code below . the size of the cover object is (512*512), it is called _lena_std_bw.bmp.What we did here is we did DWT2 2 times for the image , when we reached our second dwt2 cA2 size is 128*128. You should notice that the blocksize and it equals 4, it is used to determine the max msg size based on cA2 according to the following code:max_message=RcA2*CcA2/(blocksize^2). in our current case max_message would equal 128*128/(4^2)=1024. i want to embed a bigger watermark in the 2nd dwt2 and lets say the size of that watermark is 400*10(i can change the dimension using MS PAINT), what i have to do is change the size of the blocksize to 2. so max_message=4096.Matlab gives me 3 errors and they are : ??? • Embedding mercurial revision information in Visual Studio c# projects automatically

  Original Problem In building our projects, I want the mercurial id of each repository to be embedded within the product(s) of that repository (the library, application or test application). I find it makes it so much easier to debug an application ebing run by custiomers 8 timezones away if you know precisely what went into building the particular version of the application they are using. As such, every project (application or library) in our systems implement a way of getting at the associated revision information. I also find it very useful to be able to see if an application has been compiled with clean (un-modified) changesets from the repository. 'Hg id' usefully appends a + to the changeset id when there are uncommitted changes in a repository, so this allows is to easily see if people are running a clean or a modified version of the code. My current solution is detailed below, and fulfills the basic requirements, but there are a number of problems with it. Problems with the current solution The main problem is that since the HgId.cs is re-created at each pre-build, every time we need to compile anything, all projects in the current solution are re-compiled. Since we want to be able to easily debug into our libraries, we usually keep many libraries referenced in our main application solution. This can result in build times which are significantly longer than I would like. Ideally I would like the libraries to compile only if the contents of the HgId.cs file has actually changed, as opposed to having been re-created with exactly the same contents. The second problem with this method is it's dependence on specific behaviour of the windows shell. I've already had to modify the batch file several times, since the original worked under XP but not Vista, the next version worked under Vista but not XP and finally I managed to make it work with both. Whether it will work with Windows 7 however is anyones guess and as time goes on, I see it more likely that contractors will expect to be able to build our apps on their Windows 7 boxen. Finally, I have an aesthetic problem with this solution, batch files and bodged together template files feel like the wrong way to do this. My actual questions How would you solve/how are you solving the problem I'm trying to solve? What better options are out there than what I'm currently doing? Rejected Solutions to these problems Before I implemented the current solution, I looked at Mercurials Keyword extension, since it seemed like the obvious solution. However the more I looked at it and read peoples opinions, the more that I came to the conclusion that it wasn't the right thing to do. I also remember the problems that keyword substitution has caused me in projects at previous companies (just the thought of ever having to use Source Safe again fills me with a feeling of dread *8'). Also, I don't particularly want to have to enable Mercurial extensions to get the build to complete. I want the solution to be self contained, so that it isn't easy for the application to be accidentally compiled without the embedded version information just because an extension isn't enabled or the right helper software hasn't been installed. I also thought of writing this in a better scripting language, one where I would only write HgId.cs file if the content had actually changed, but all of the options I could think of would require my co-workers, contractors and possibly customers to have to install software they might not otherwise want (for example cygwin). Any other options people can think of would be appreciated. The second problem also remains, and now I have no way to test if it will work with Vista, since that contractor is no longer with us. If anyone can test this batch file on a Windows 7 and/or Vista box, I would appreciate hearing how it went. Finally, my aesthetic problem with this solution, is even strnger than it was before, since the batch file is more complex and this there is now more to go wrong. If you can think of any better solution, I would love to hear about them.

• Yet another C# Deadlock Debugging Question

  Hi All, I have a multi-threaded application build in C# using VS2010 Professional. It's quite a large application and we've experienced the classing GUI cross-threading and deadlock issues before, but in the past month we've noticed the appears to lock up when left idle for around 20-30 minutes. The application is irresponsive and although it will repaint itself when other windows are dragged in front of the application and over it, the GUI still appears to be locked... interstingly (unlike if the GUI thread is being used for a considerable amount of time) the Close, Maximise and minimise buttons are also irresponsive and when clicked the little (Not Responding...) text is not displayed in the title of the application i.e. Windows still seems to think it's running fine. If I break/pause the application using the debugger, and view the threads that are running. There are 3 threads of our managed code that are running, and a few other worker threads whom the source code cannot be displayed for. The 3 threads that run are: The main/GUI thread A thread that loops indefinitely A thread that loops indefinitely If I step into threads 2 and 3, they appear to be looping correctly. They do not share locks (even with the main GUI thread) and they are not using the GUI thread at all. When stepping into the main/GUI thread however, it's broken on Application.Run... This problem screams deadlock to me, but what I don't understand is if it's deadlock, why can't I see the line of code the main/GUI thread is hanging on? Any help will be greatly appreciated! I've marked the answer that solved my initial problem of determining where on the main/UI thread the application hangs (I handn't turned off the "Enable Just My Code" option). The overall issue I was experiencing was indeed Deadlock, however. After obtaining the call-stack and popping the top half of it into Google I came across this which explains exactly what I was experiencing... http://timl.net/ This references a lovely guide to debugging the issue... http://www.aaronlerch.com/blog/2008/12/15/debugging-ui/ This identified a control I was constructing off the GUI thread. I did know this, however, and was marshalling calls correctly, but what I didn't realise was that behind the scenes this Control was subscribing to an event or set of events that are triggered when e.g. a Windows session is unlocked or the screensaver exits. These calls are always made on the main/UI thread and were blocking when it saw the call was made on the incorrect thread. That appears to have solved the problem and the application no longer hangs. I hope this helps anyone who's confronted by a similar problem. Thanks again to everyone on here who helped! Roo -----------------------------------------------------SOLUTION II-------------------------------------------------- Aren't threading issues delightful...you think you've solved it, and a month down the line it pops back up again. I still believe the solution above resolved an issue that would cause simillar behaviour, but we encountered the problem again. As we spent a while debugging this, I thought I'd update this question with our (hopefully) final solution: The problem appears to have been a bug in the Infragistics components in the WinForms 2010.1 release (no hot fixes). We had been running from around the time the freeze issue appeared (but had also added a bunch of other stuff too). After upgrading to WinForms 2010.3, we've yet to reproduce the issue (deja vu). • VB.NET - using textfile as source for menus and textboxes

  Hi, this is probably a bit tense and I'm not sure if this is possible at all. But basically, I'm trying to create a small application which contains alot of PowerShell-code which I want to run in an easy matter. I've managed to create everything myself and it does work. But all of the PowerShell code is manually hardcoded and this gives me a huge disadvantage. What I was thinking was creating some sort of dynamic structure where I can read a couple of text files (possible a numerous amount of text files) and use these as the source for both the comboboxes and the richtextbox which provovides as the string used to run in PowerShell. I was thinking something like this: Combobox - "Choose cmdlet" - Use "menucode.txt" as source Richtextbox - Use "code.txt" as source But, the thing is, Powershell snippets need a few arguments in order for them to work. So I've got a couple of comboboxes and a few textboxes which provides as input for these arguments. And this is done manually as it is right now. So rewriting this small application should also search the textfile for some keywords and have the comboboxes and textboxes to replace those keywords. And I'm not sure how to do this. So, would this requre a whole lot of textfiles? Or could I use one textfile and separate each PowerShell cmdlet snippets with something? Like some sort of a header?
