  • Manager Self Service at your Fingertips

    - by Elaine Clement
Last week we released new and improved Manager Self Service capabilities in PeopleSoft HCM 9.1. We delivered a new Manager Dashboard, streamlined many Manager Self Service transactions, provided new Pivot Grid capabilities, and implemented one-click Related Actions accessible from multiple places – all with the goal of improving every Manager’s self service experience. Manager Dashboard These new capabilities have the potential to significantly impact an organization’s bottom line, and here is why. Increased Efficiency The Manager Dashboard provides a ‘one-stop shop’ for your Managers with all of the key data they need consolidated into a single view. Alerts notifying managers of important tasks are immediately viewable and actionable. Administrators can configure the dashboard to include the most important pagelets needed for their organization, and Managers can personalize it to fit within their personal way of conducting their tasks. The Related Actions feature further improves the ease with which Managers get their work done by providing one-click access to Manager Self Service transactions.  Increased Job Satisfaction The streamlined Manager transactions, related actions, and the new Manager Dashboard provide an enhanced user experience. Managers are able to quickly get in, get the information they need, complete their transactions, and get out. Managers can spend their time focusing on getting the business results they need instead of their day to day HR tasks. Enhanced Decision Support Administrators can ensure the information and analytics they want their Managers to use are available from the Manager Dashboard, establishing best business practices. Additional pivot grids relevant to your own organization can be added to the Manager Dashboard. With this easy access to the relevant information in an easily understood format, Managers can make the right business decisions needed to improve their team and their team’s productivity. For more details on the Manager Dashboard and some of the other newly posted features, such as a new Talent Summary, check out this video and others: Oracle PeopleSoft Webcasts

  • Can't boot into windows7/ubuntu 12.04 after running boot-repair

    - by Rini
I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my preinstalled windows 7 Sony vaio E series laptop following instructions here: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/05/17/how-to-dual-boot-ubuntu-12-04-and-windows-7/ Everything went well and I am able to boot in to windows after complete installation of Ubuntu. Now following instructions on web I tried to add Ubuntu to my BIOS using Easy BCD (but forget to add windows 7 entry). As a result, I loose windows 7 OS and can't boot in to either OS then I successfully repaired windows 7 using recovery CD. Now my problem is that I can't reinstall Ubuntu 12.04 using Live CD it halts every time before disk partition step giving error. "ubi-partman crashed". "ubi-partman failed with exit code 141. further information may be found in /var/log/syslog. Do you want to try running this step again before continuing? If you do not, your installation may fail entirely or may be broken." and, any choice to continue will result in the same error. After that following some post solutions I ran boot-repair commands in terminal ( in Try Ubuntu mode) and got the following URL: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1206434/ Now, after restart I can't boot into either Windows or Ubuntu. Even any attempt to run Windows repair is failed and I got the message : 'No operating System found' I don't know what went wrong after running boot-repair command. Please help in solving this issue. Thanks and Regards, R Shukla

  • Oracle Database 12c By Example – SQL Developer and Multitenant

    - by thatjeffsmith
As you may have heard, Oracle Database 12c is now available. In addition to the binaries and docs going out, we also published a few new Oracle By Example (OBE) chapters. You can find those links here on our product page. Do you know who found these, practically the minute they were published? An enterprising DBA-extraordinaire who was just happening to be presenting at the ODTUG KScope13 conference in New Orleans. He thought it would be a good idea to download the new software over a hotel WIFI, install and create a new multitenant database, watch a few OBEs, and then demo that live for his ‘SQL Developer for DBAs‘ session. Pretty crazy, right? Well, he did it, and I was there to watch. Way cool. You can listen to @leight0nn tell his story in his own words via this ODTUG interview with @oraclenered. In case you’re too giddy to sit through the video, I’ll give you a preview – he succesfully cloned a pluggable database in about a minute with only a couple of clicks using Oracle SQL Developer 3.2.20.09 while connected to a 12c database.

  • Google Loon–A network of balloons to provide internet to everyone

    - by Gopinath
Google once just a super powerful search engine provider and now they are venturing in to a lot of interesting non software projects like self driving cars, glasses that beam information right on to your eye balls, high speed internet services @ 1 Giga bytes per second. A recent addition to this innovative list is Google Loon – a network of flying balloons that provide internet access to remote parts of the world where it is not feasible for many governments/corporate to provider internet services. Google says there are several billions of people around the world who don’t have access to internet and Google Loon aim is to provide internet facilities to all these people. A pilot project is started couple of days ago by launching 30 balloons into stratosphere from New Zealand. These balloons fly 20 Kilometers above earth(much higher than where aero planes fly) and they beam internet to homes having Loon receiver wirelessly. Checkout the embedded introductory video on Google Loon What is in it for Google? Why is Google getting into these type of projects and what is in it for them? Google is the gateway to web and majority of people find information on web using Google Services/Software. So providing internet facilities to more people means, more people using Google services and it in turn contributes to their revenue growth. Google is not a charity, they do all these projects to earn money just like every other corporate. The best part is while earning money they are touching lives of billions of people in a positive way. Just imagine everyone in the world connected and have ability to take informed decisions irrespective of whether they live in developed countries or underprivileged parts of the world! Wow that will be a beautiful day. • How to revert back to older xorg?

    - by wouter205
Since the last update of ubuntu 12.04, the system won't boot into gui anymore. It states that it was unable to load the graphics drivers and gives me 4 options, these are: run in low graphics mode for 1 session reconfigure graphics troubleshoot the error exit to console login whichever option I choose, it doesn't solve anything. For instance, when i choose to reconfigure graphics and then switch to vesa drivers, the screen goes back to the option list. So i configured xorg.conf to vesa myself, and i see in the update history that ubuntu updated xserver-xorg-core and xserver-common whereas i blocked these updates in synaptic since i'm aware that updating these files caused troubles with my particular video card (radeon hd6800). So my solution is probably to revert these files to the older (working) versions. How can I do this please (in particular xserver-xorg-core since i think this is the main cause of my problem). thanks! output of ls /etc/X11 -app-defaults xorg.conf Xreset -cursors xorg.conf-backup-120529144709 Xreset.d -default-display-manager xorg.conf.fglrx-0 -Xresources -fonts xorg.conf.fglrx-1 Xsession -rgb.txt xorg.conf.fglrx-2 Xsession.d -X xorg.conf.original-0 -Xsession.options -xinit xorg.conf.original-1 -Xwrapper.config -xkb xorg.conf.vesa Output of sudo aptitude show xserver-xorg-core | grep Versie (read: Version in Flemish) Versie: 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.2

  • TechEd 2010 Day Two – No SQL Server in Sight

    - by BuckWoody
Today I worked the booth at TechEd 2010, manning the new “Surface” computer, which is just the coolest object on the planet. After that I didn’t attend a single SQL Server session – instead I’ve been frequenting SharePoint, Microsoft Office, and even the High-Performance Computing sessions. The reason is that I get really high quality SQL Server presentations at PASS, SQL Saturdays, and online from Microsoft and other vendors. While there are SQL Server sessions here (after all, I’m giving one of them!) I tend to try and see things that I don’t normally get to learn about. And the cross-pollination between those technologies and mine is fantastic.     I’ve even managed to go to an Entity Framework presentation for the developers. I actually have (a little) more respect for that technology – and I’ve modified my presentation to encompass more of that information. So whenever you have the chance, take a walk outside your comfort zone. Even at PASS and SQL Saturdays (and certainly online) you can investigate technologies other than the ones you know best.  Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

  • MightyMintyBoost Is a 3-in-1 Gadget Charger

    - by ETC
If you’re looking for a versatile battery booster, this DIY 3-in-1 solar/usb/wall current charger known as the MightyMintyBoost will top of your phone, mp3 player, and other gadgets with ease. Instructables user Honus didn’t just build the MightMintyBoost to geek out and show off his electronics project skills (although it’s certainly a nifty little project to do so), he’s serious about solar power and the impact clean energy has: Apple has sold over 30 million iPodTouch/iPhone units- imagine charging all of them via solar power…. If every iPhone/iPodTouch sold was fully charged every day (averaging the battery capacity) via solar power instead of fossil fuel power we would save approximately 50.644gWh of energy, roughly equivalent to 75,965,625 lbs. of CO2 in the atmosphere per year. Granted that’s a best case scenario (assuming you can get enough sunlight per day and approximately 1.5 lbs. CO2 produced per kWh used.) Of course, that doesn’t even figure in all the other iPods, cell phones, PDAs, microcontrollers (I use it to power my Arduino projects) and other USB devices that can be powered by this charger- one little solar cell charger may not seem like it can make a difference but add all those millions of devices together and that’s a lot of energy! His MightyMintyBoost is a battery booster for devices that can charge via USB and it accepts incoming current from the solar panel on top (or, on cloudy days can be charged via a wall charger or the USB port on your computer). Hit up the link below to see his full build guide and create your own MightyMintyBoost. Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/07/03/building-apps-that-work-together.aspx  Writing apps that stand alone will only get yon so far.  If your app can allow the user to leverage other applications and share data you Can have a real winner on your hands. Jake Sabulsky started off by explaining that you should be concentrating on the core functionality of your app and letting the framework take care of the features that users require these days.  This is implemented be leveraging contracts.  When Windows 8 was released it included the File, Share and Pickers contracts.  With the release of Windows 8.1 they have added the Contacts and Calendar contracts. There have been a number of improvements to the original contracts. The File URI contract will now automatically detect the size that a new windows should be opened and will also allow you to programmatically influence new window size.  The Share contract has been enhanced by allowing apps to always share screenshots and links to the app in the store. To my thinking the contracts are one of the most powerful features of Windows 8.  Take the time view this session and learn how to leverage them. Technorati Tags: BUILD 2013,Windows 8,Live tiles

  • Repurpose Old Phones As Intercoms

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you’ve got some old wired telephones laying around for want of a project, this simple hack turns two wired phones into an intercom. Over at Hack A Day, Caleb Kraft shares his simple phone hack inspired by his VW bus. He writes: In case you haven’t noticed from my many comments on the subject, I drive a VW bus. It is a 1976 Westfalia camper with sage green paint and green plaid upholstery. I absolutely love it and so does the rest of my family. We go for drives in the country as well as camping regularly. We have found that the kids have a hard time communicating with us while we’re going higher speeds. These things aren’t the quietest automobiles in the world. Pushing this bread loaf shaped hunk of steel down the road with an engine that might top out at 75hp results in wind noise, engine noise, and of course, vibration. I decided to employ a really old hack to put two functional telephones in the bus so my kids can talk to my wife (or whoever the passenger is) without screaming quite so loud. This hack is extremely easy, fairly cheap, and can be done in just a few minutes. The result is a functional intercom that you could use pretty much anywhere! • Using an Apt Repository for Paid Software Updates

    - by Scott Warren
I'm trying to determine a way to distribute software updates for a hosted/on-site web application that may have weekly and/or monthly updates. I don't want the customers who use the on-site product to have to worry about updating it manually I just want it to download and install automatically ala Google Chrome. I'm planning on providing an OVF file with Ubuntu and the software installed and configured. My first thought on how to distributed software is to create six Apt repositories/channels (not sure which would be better at this point) that will be accessed through SSH using keys so if a customer doesn't renew their subscription we can disable their account: Beta - Used internally on test data to check the package for major defects. Internal - Used internally on live data to check the package for defects (dog fooding stage). External 1 - Deployed to 1% of our user base (randomly selected) to check for defects. External 9 - Deployed to 9% of our user base (randomly selected) to check for defects. External 90 - Deployed to the remaining 90% of users. Hosted - Deployed to the hosted environment. It will take a sign off at each stage to move into the next repository in case problems are reported. My questions to the community are: Has anyone tried something like this before? Can anyone see a downside to this type of a procedure? Is there a better way?
