• XStream <-> Alternative binary formats (e.g. protocol buffers)

  We currently use XStream for encoding our web service inputs/outputs in XML. However we are considering switching to a binary format with code generator for multiple languages (protobuf, Thrift, Hessian, etc) to make supporting new clients easier and less reliant on hand-coding (also to better support our message formats which include binary data). However most of our objects on the server are POJOs with XStream handling the serialization via reflection and annotations, and most of these libraries assume they will be generating the POJOs themselves. I can think of a few ways to interface an alternative library: Write an XStream marshaler for the target format. Write custom code to marshal the POJOs to/from the classes generated by the alternative library. Subclass the generated classes to implement the POJO logic. May require some rewriting. (Also did I mention we want to use Terracotta?) Use another library that supports both reflection (like XStream) and code generation. However I'm not sure which serialization library would be best suited to the above techniques.

  Hi, When using XML serialization in C#, I use code like this: public MyObject LoadData() { XmlSerializer xmlSerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(MyObject)); using (TextReader reader = new StreamReader(settingsFileName)) { return (MyObject)xmlSerializer.Deserialize(reader); } } (and similar code for deserialization). It requires casting and is not really nice. Is there a way, directly in .NET Framework, to use generics with serialization? That is to say to write something like: public MyObject LoadData() { // Generics here. XmlSerializer<MyObject> xmlSerializer = new XmlSerializer(); using (TextReader reader = new StreamReader(settingsFileName)) { // No casts nevermore. return xmlSerializer.Deserialize(reader); } }

• XslCompiledTransform eats my DOCTYPE!

  Made a xslt template with output instruction for <DOCTYPE> <xsl:output media-type="text/html" method="html" encoding="windows-1251" doctype-public="-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" doctype-system="http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd" omit-xml-declaration="yes"/> In xsl-debug I'm receiving right <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd"> on top of the html. But when I'm using XslCompiledTransform etc.. output starts from <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">. So, Doctype is missed. Why? Right properties of XslCompiledTransform initialized just like I set in . How can I get DOCTYPE from XslCompiledTransform?

• DataSet.GetXml not returning null results

  Hi, whenever I convert a DatSet into an XML with DataSet.GetXml, any null value is ignored, so, where i expect this: <value1>a</value1> <value2></value2> <value3>c</value3> I get this instead: <value1>a</value1> <value3>c</value3> Any quick and dirty way to handle this? Thanks EDIT: I think a solution would be using WriteXml. Could anyone provide me with a sample of using it WITHOUT writing to a file but getting a string just like GetXml does? Thanks

• Does WCF always use SOAP to send information over your binding?

  I understand you can choose from a range of bindings, such as TCP, HTTP, HTTPS etc. Am I correct in thinking it always uses SOAP to send data over this connection? I am watching a guide to WCF and it is talking about how exceptions are serialized into SOAP and sent to the client. I would have thought that not all bindings would use SOAP to send data, so I am a bit confused about how it works. Although I understand the fundamentals of WCF, how to set up services and use a proxy on the client, it doesn't seem to have explained exactly how the data is packaged up to send. Perhaps the answer is obvious, that it just uses XML / SOAP, but I would love to know for sure!

  The Document class have a getDoctype method but doesn't have a setDoctype. The documentation says: The DOM Level 2 does not support editing the Document Type Declaration. docType cannot be altered in any way, including through the use of methods inherited from the Node interface, such as insertNode or removeNode. and in my project I need to generate xml files with my specified doctypes. I've tryied to create my own DefaultNode, but it throws "DOMException: Method not supported" for the setters. Any idea?

  geonames.org got a web api you can use to get all the hierarchy for a city. you just enter the id and you will get the data back in xml. http://ws.geonames.org/hierarchy?geonameId=2657896 i wonder how you fetch the url with php and javascript, and which one should i use. cause the id's are in the mysql database. i will get them with php. should i use file_get_contents, curl or fopen? and what function in javascript? jquery $.post? heard that it can only access localhost. would be great with some guidance here and even better with some code examples. thanks!

• NSString to NSData Failing in Encoding

  I'm trying to use NSXmlParser to parse ISO-8859-1 data. Using Apple's own example for parsing ISO-8859-1, I have the following. NSString *xmlFilePath = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:sampleFileName ofType:@"xml"]; NSString *xmlFileContents = [NSString stringWithContentsOfFile:xmlFilePath encoding:NSISOLatin1StringEncoding error:nil]; NSLog(@"contents: %@", xmlFileContents); I see that in the console, the contents of the string is accurate. However when I try to convert it to an NSData object (for use with the parser), I do the following. NSData *xmlData = [xmlFileContents dataUsingEncoding:NSISOLatin1StringEncoding]; But then when my didStartElement delegate gets called, I see  showing up which I think is from an encoding discrepancy. Can NSXmlParser handle ISO-8859-1 and if so, what am I doing wrong?

  Here are my classes: http://pastebin.com/3dc5Vb1t When I try to run BookStore b = new BookStore(); b.LoadFromXML(Server.MapPath("list.xml")); Label1.Text = b.ToString(); I get the following error: You must implement a default accessor on System.Collections.Generic.LinkedList`1[[Book, App_Code.cxsacizw, Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null]] because it inherits from ICollection. The error source is XmlSerializer s = new XmlSerializer(typeof(BookStore)); When I tried to look for a solution on google, I found it that LinkedList has some problems with serialization.   My code works for ORs as I've listed it below but I want to use AND instead of OR and it fails. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong. Basically I have a Linq query that searches on multiple fields in an XML file. The search fields might not all have information. Each element runs the extension method, and tests the equality.
