• Sharing Internet Connection in Windows 7 is so much more frustrated than Windows XP

  Back to the time of Windows XP, from Properties dialog of my Wireless Connection, I can enable sharing and then select LAN network from the Drop Down List and boom, I can share it with my friend. We just need a LAN cable (either cross or not-cross is OK) and his Laptop will get an auto IP to gain access to internet. But now with the new Windows 7, everything starts to suck. I cannot see the Drop Down List any more in the sharing panel and my friends Laptop cannot get an automatic IP anymore. Am I doing anything wrong over there? How can I gain back the peace I used to have with Windows XP?

• Strip my windows NTFS disk of all ACLs

  When you purchase a windows PC nowadays, you don't actually "own" the whole disk... There are so many ACLs on each folder that there are portions of it you actually can access only through a complex sequence of actions requiring skills well beyond the average PC user. You have to drill down to deeply buried dialog boxes accessible through concealed buttons. You have to understand at which level of the hierarchy you have to take ownership, remove ACLs etc... Yet when you think of it, that's your PC, that's what the "P" of PC originally stand for... So I'm toying with the idea of just stripping the disk of all ACLs I just purchased and leave standard file protections do the basic protection work... Just like previous century Windows used to do... (before I chmod -R 777 ;-) Has anybody done that already and nevertheless survived in reasonably good shape for a reasonable amount of time ? Any technical advice to do that ? Powershell script ? basic script using iCACLS ?

• Missing backslashes in filename using C#

  Hi, I have a string literal as follows: string filename = @"C:\myfolder\myfile.jpg"; When I use File.Exists(filename) it works most of the time but sometimes I get an error saying the following file doesn't exist: C:myfoldermyfile.jpg Something seems to strip the backslashes out of the filename. This code is sometimes accessed via an ajax request. Does anyone know why/how this could be happening? • Simple File-based Record Storage with Fast Text Searching for Compact Framework and Silverlight

  I have a single table with lots of records ( 100k) that I need to be able to index and search on several text fields. The easiest searches will have the first part of the string specified (eg, LIKE 'ABC%' in SQL). The tougher searches will need to search for any substring within the text fields (eg, LIKE '%ABC%' in SQL). I need to run on the Compact Framework. SQL Compact is a memory hog and overkill for my one table. Besides, I'd like to be able to run on Silverlight 4 eventually. The file and indexes can be generated on the full .NET Framework and I only need read capability on the Compact Framework. My records are not especially large and can be expressed in fix length format. I'm looking for some existing code or libraries to avoid having to write a file-based BTree implementation from scratch.

  I just bought a Google Nexus One smartphone, and I want to write a small Android application for fun. Suppose I can get my current GPS coordinates, so then how can I programmatically find nearby landmarks or points-of-interest within some radius? Is there an API to get GPS geo-tagged landmarks, like in Google Earth's database? For example, if I'm in downtown Chicago, my program would point me to all the "tourist" things to visit in that city. Ideally, it would all run on my smartphone, but if necessary, I can have the smartphone query a webserver, which would then run more queries.

• SQL Server Multiple Joins Are Taxing The CPU

  I have a stored procedure on SQL Server 2005. It is pulling from a Table function, and has two joins. When the query is run using a load test it kills the CPU 100% across all 16 cores! I have determined that removing one of the joins makes the query run fine, but both taxes the CPU. Select SKey From dbo.tfnGetLatest(@ID) a left join [STAGING].dbo.RefSrvc b on a.LID = b.ESIID left join [STAGING].dbo.RefSrvc c on a.EID = c.ESIID Any help is appreciated, note the join is happening on the same table in a different database on the same server.

• Outlook 2007: compose, and reply error with "Not Implemented."

  This is happening on a Windows Vista machine with Office 2007 Ultimate. I have run repair from the control panel and also the MS Office Diagnostic tool. No problems are reported. When I started Outlook my mail box opens and I can read my messages. If I click compose or reply then Outlook gives me a dialog that says, "Not Implemented." The rest of office seems to be working fine. Does anyone know what causes this or the correct way to repair it? Thanks!

You can't do this in C#! I want to return an IList<ITask> from an IList<IStates>. } } Assuming the IList returned will be read-only, I know that what I'm trying to achieve is safe (or is it not?). Is there any way I can accomplish what I'm trying? I wouldn't want to try to implement myself the TasksChain algorithm (again!), as it would be error prone and would lead to code duplication. Maybe I could just define an abstract Chain and then implement both TasksChain and StatesChain from there? Or maybe implementing a Chain<T> class? How would you approach this situation? The Details: I have defined an ITask interface: public interface ITask { bool Run(); ITask FailureTask { get; } } and a IState interface that inherits from ITask: public interface IState : ITask { IState FailureState { get; } } I have also defined an IHasTasksList interface: interface IHasTasksList { List<Tasks> Tasks { get; } } and an IHasStatesList: interface IHasTasksList { List<Tasks> States { get; } } Now, I have defined a TasksChain, that is a class that has some code logic that will manipulate a chain of tasks (beware that TasksChain is itself a kind of ITask!): class TasksChain : ITask, IHasTasksList { IList<ITask> tasks = new List<ITask>(); ... public List<ITask> Tasks { get { return _tasks; } } ... } I am implementing a State the following way: public class State : IState { private readonly TaskChain _taskChain = new TaskChain(); public State(Precondition precondition, Execution execution) { _taskChain.Tasks.Add(precondition); _taskChain.Tasks.Add(execution); } public bool Run() { return _taskChain.Run(); } public IState FailureState { get { return (IState)_taskChain.Tasks[0].FailureTask; } } ITask ITask.FailureTask { get { return FailureState; } } } which, as you can see, makes use of explicit interface implementations to "hide" FailureTask and instead show FailureState property. The problem comes from the fact that I also want to define a StatesChain, that inherits both from IState and IHasStateList (and that also imples ITask and IHasTaskList, implemented as explicit interfaces) and I want it to also hide IHasTaskList's Tasks and only show IHasStateList's States. • How to block own rpcap traffic where tshark is running?

  Platform :- Fedora 13 32-bit machine RemoteMachine$ ./rpcapd -n ClientMachine$ tshark -w "filename" -i "any interface name" As soon as capture starts without any capture filter, thousands of packets get captured. Rpcapd binds to 2002 port by default and while establishing the connection it sends a randomly chosen port number to the client for further communication. Both client and server machines exchange tcp packets through randomly chosen ports. So, I cannot even specify the capture filter to block this rpcap related tcp traffic. Wireshark & tshark for Windows have an option "Do not capture own Rpcap Traffic" in Remote Settings in Edit Interface Dialog box. But there is no such option in tshark for linux. It will be also better if anyone can tell me how wireshark blocks rpcap traffic....

  Hello, I have to create an app that will read in some info from a db, process the data, write changes back to the db, and then send an email with these changes to some users or groups. I will be writing this in c#, and this process must be run once a week at a particular time. This will be running on a Windows 2008 Server. In the past, I would always go the route of creating a windows service with a timer and setting the time/day for it to be run in the app.config file so that it can be changed and only have to be restarted to catch the update. Recently, though, I have seen blog posts and such that recommend writing a console application and then using a scheduled task to execute it. I have read many posts talking to this very issue, but have not seen a definitive answer about which process is better. What do any of you think? Thanks for any thoughts.

  Ran into this problem today, posting in case someone else has the same issue. var execBtn = document.createElement('input'); execBtn.setAttribute("type", "button"); execBtn.setAttribute("id", "execBtn"); execBtn.setAttribute("value", "Execute"); execBtn.setAttribute("onclick", "runCommand();"); Turns out to get IE to run an onclick on a dynamically generated element, we can't use setAttribute. Instead, we need to set the onclick property on the object with an anonymous function wrapping the code we want to run. execBtn.onclick = function() { runCommand() }; BAD IDEAS: You can do execBtn.setAttribute("onclick", function() { runCommand() }); but it will break in IE in non-standards mode according to @scunliffe. You can't do this at all execBtn.setAttribute("onclick", runCommand() ); because it executes immediately, and sets the result of runCommand() to be the onClick attribute value, nor can you do execBtn.setAttribute("onclick", runCommand);

• Executing php with crontab

  Hi everyone. I'm trying to run a php-script on a scheduled basis. So I'd thought crontab was a good idea. The server I'm using is on Linux which I'm not that familiar with. So the problem I'm having is, I don't know how make the script executable from php. I need to reference the script, or put it into a folder that can run php from the command line. So I don't know what path to give my crontab, for example: 5 * * * * var/www/some/path/script.php I found some vague information about this php executable being found in /usr/bin/php But I can't find any php file in there, maybe I don't have it installed? My php5 and apache installation is in: /etc/php5 So my question becomes, is there anyway to execute a php-script with crontab in any other folder, or do I just lack the php executable in usr/bin/php?

• Where are Credentials stored for Network Drives on WinXP?

  I have a drive mapped to a folder on a remote machine that I connect to using the Cisco VPN client. The password to the Windows account I use on that remote machine has changed. I had stored the username/password locally, using Window's remember my password feature, so I wouldn't have to enter it every time (the enter user/password login dialog used to appear each time I attempted to open the remote folder, and I would have to look up and enter my credentials). The password to that remote Windows account has changed. Now, I am no longer prompted to enter a user name / password, but instead, upon trying to open the remote folder, receive a message: unknown user name or bad password. How do I view and change these stored credentials?

  Hi all i am getting deployment error when i try to run my app in the device. it says "no provisioning ios devices are connected". I have ios sdk 4.1 installed on my mac and in the device the version of ios is 4.2. I have conected my device to Mac. Can i run my app under these conditions or i need to update ios sdk to 4.2 in Mac also. if yes then is there any update available so that i can update my sdk from version 4.1 to 4.2 or i have to download the whole new version of 4.2 (almost 3.5 GB).   I have a VPS and I want to make mysql DB accept connection externally (from my PC for instance). I have Debian Linux installed on the server. I checked some tutorials online and they said to comment out: bind-address = 127.0.0.1 But this didn't seem to help! is there anything specific for VPSs? or Am I missing something else? The command that runs mysql is: /usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir=/usr --datadir=/var/lib/mysql --user=mysql --pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid --skip-external-locking --port=3306 --socket=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

• makefile compilation problem

  He I have a problem with a makefile. I have three classes. They do pretty simple stuff. One does an addition on a subtraction, and the last one will instantiate the two and simply print the resulted addition and subtraction. Now when I create my makefile, I compile my Plus.java and my Minus.java but don't know how to compile the main class because it depends on the previous two. I want to compile and run it from the makefile if it's possible. I get the above results when I try to run make: javac -g Plus.class Minus.class javac: invalid flag: Plus.class Usage: javac use -help for a list of possible options make: * [Operation.class] Error 2 I don't know how to procede, please forgive me if my question is to simple but I am new working with these stuff. • RNDC fails: permission denied

  Named works great. It creates a pid in /var/run/named/named.pid as expected. It is listening on port 953 as shown by the log: Apr 20 14:42:38 guchuko named[9115]: command channel listening on 127.0.0.1#953 But whenever I try to run "rndc reload" I get: rndc: 'reload' failed: permission denied What file is it being denied permission to ? It doesn't log anything so I don't know why it's not working. • Website settings for running visual web as root?

  Scott Gu explains how to run visual web developer using a root path, here: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/12/19/tip-trick-how-to-run-a-root-site-with-the-local-web-server-using-vs-2005-sp1.aspx This worked exactly as he described in one instance for me. But, today I do not see this option. More over, I do not think I have a solution file, and I think that has something to do with it. I'm aware there are web application projects and web site model, and web site model is basically just a "directory". But can web site model, also, have a solution file for this setting or not a solution file? What determines that? I am interested in using this method on on a web site, i.e directory only model.
