• Text Terminal Hardware (for Linux)

  Is there any way to obtain a hardware text terminal (preferably small in size) with a screen and a keypad to connect to a Linux machine (preferably via usb)? I'd like to be able to log into a command line and do some work there while simultaneously running a graphical environment on the main display. It seems like there should be some kind of lcd screen and qwerty keypad device designed for this purpose. Does this exist, and how do I get one? Edit: I'd be happy with a small networked device as well, as long as I could get a remote terminal into my computer.

• #mvvmlight V4 update for Win8 RTM

  With Windows 8 RTM out of the doors (at least for some of us), it was also time to create an update to MVVM Light. I selected the V4 RTM to do this (V4.0.23).This RTM version was released a few weeks ago with no much bells and whistles because I was just too busy to write much about it. Now after some vacation, I will resume blogging on all my favorite topics including of course MVVM Light. Upgrade Upgrading the installations should not require an ununistall, so try to simply run the MSI downloaded from the Download section at http://mvvmlight.codeplex.com/. Should you encounter any issue, try to uninstall the old version first following the steps at http://galasoft.ch/mvvm/cleaning/. Upgrading current apps from Win8 RP to Win8 RTM I didn’t recompile the assemblies of MVVM Light, so if you had a version running with V4.0.23 on Windows 8 RP, you should be able to use the same DLLs on Windows 8 RTM. If you were using earlier versions however, I would recommend doing an upgrade. I noticed a warning regarding the signing certificate. It is due to the PFX key which appears to be outdated after the upgrade to Windows 8 RTM. I solved this warning by replacing the old PFX key with a new one I copied from a new project. The warning did not cause the build to fail though. About MVVM Light V4 RTM The RTM is finalizing quite a lot of issues. The change log is available at http://galasoft.ch/mvvm/installing/changes/. There are some issues that are either still open or that popped up since then, and I am working on V4.1 to be released in the next few weeks. • Where did ULSTraceLog go to in the SharePoint 2010 Logging Database?

  The Logging Database is one of the many new concepts that will make the life of many SharePoint administrators quite a bit more enjoyable. In SharePoint 2007 the Unified Logging System (ULS) logged all of its data to text files, typically found on your SharePoint server in 12\LOGS. We still have that in SharePoint 2010, but besides those text files, ULS can also write the data to a database! The advantages are obvious: easy to query, one central location for all servers in the farm, easy to build reports etc. You can find this ULS data in the SharePoint 2010 logging database (typically called WSS_Logging), in the view ULSTraceLog. Quite recently on one of my demo machines (standalone installation on Windows 7) I noticed the ULSTraceLog view was not available in the logging database. It turned out that there is a Timer Job that’s responsible for writing the data to the database, when the Timer Job hasn’t executed, the view is not there (the first time it executes, the view is created). Even more, the timer job was disabled, so the view would never be created, nor any data would be written to the database. If you encounter this situation as well, it’s quite easy to solve: Open the SharePoint Central Administration site Navigate to the Monitoring section Select Review Job Definitions Click on the job with the name Diagnostic Data Provider: Trace Log Click on the Enable button to enable it Optionally click on Run Now afterwards, to start it immediately There you go, the ULSTraceLog will be created and the ULS messages will appear in the database!

• Is there a security risk for allowing people to set their DNS so their own subdomains can be route to my server?

  Lets say that I have a web application, built in Django and deployed with Nginx. Is it a good idea to offer a service that allows customers to request that a subdomain can be pointed at it. I figured this: If I dont allow this, then some companies wont want to access the service from http://mydjangoappmadeupname.com/bigcorporation/ They would rather access it through http://service.bigcorporation.com That would effectively mask that they are using an outside resource. Is there a significant risk that I am overlooking? Also do you think it would be easier to just set things up in Django to handle it, allowing Nginx to accept all domains and then pushing them to Django which would filter out if they are allowed or not, or would it be better to just update my Nginx log each time a client wanted this changed?

• Script to kill process at logoff doesn't execute until process is dead?

  We have a program that, due to memory leaks in some of the screens, doesn't exit cleanly when the user quits. The problem is that this blocks the normal logoff procedure - you select logout and a few processes disappear but the user doesn't actually log off. Since I'm unable to fix the program, I thought I'd use a script run at logoff to kill the process. I've verified the script kills the process if I run it by double clicking and have added the script to Windows Settings - Scripts - Logoff on my machine in gpedit. Unfortunately it seems that the logoff scripts don't get run until all the processes have died, so it never runs. Is there a way to make the logoff scripts run at an earlier point in the process? Or is there a better approach to the issue?

• Authentication problem: can't bypass the login prompt when browsing to the SQL Reporing Services web

  Hi all, I'm having a hard time configuring Reporting services on one of our servers. I'm not uninitiated in the domain of IIS7 but I cannot get rid of the login prompt when I'm surfing to the Reporting services website. What I did: I made a windows and SQL user with the same name: Then I choose Anonymous authentication in II7 and filled in the credentials of the specific R.S. user http://img32.imageshack.us/i/iis7auth.jpg/ I choose 'Local Service' as the service account in the R.S. configuration mgr http://img88.imageshack.us/i/rsconfigmgr.jpg/ The first problem is that there's always a pop-up when surfing to the website The second is that when I'm able to log in I get the message that the user doesn't have the appropriate permissions. • Restoring the owners on debian system files

  Due to my inattention, tiredness (and probably stupidity) i've run chown -R someuser:someuser / and now all your base are belongs to us the files on the server belong to one user (lol). After system restart apache, bind9, mysql, and a dozen of other applications don't start and fill their log files with permission errors. I haven't done any backups on system files, only on the db and website files... Please suggest some ways to revive my web server. I have only 2 month experience with linux, so please keep it simple...

  So, one of my servers has a hard disk failure. It also passes the test with smartctl --test=short /dev/sda. So, is smartctl a broken testing tool, or am I doing something completely off?

• SMF restarting service whenever there's output?

  I'm trying to add a custom service to SMF's configuration, which seems successful in that the service starts and there is a log file, but therein lies the problem; the service, on start-up, prints some logging messages to the stderr. It seems that SMF is seeing those messages and, believing them to be errors, restarts the service, giving up after a number of tries and leaving the service off. What would be the best way to manage this service with SMF? The logging is needed for diagnosing problems, and would be problematic to disable. Is it possible to configure this service to only restart if the service exists?

• Are there any problems migrating users from OSX 10.4.11 server to 10.6.6. server using WGM?

  I have just set up a new Mac server running 10.6.6. Installation went smoothly and all appears ok. Can create a new user through WGM and logon to the server from one of our local client systems. Imported the old users from the 10.4 system using WGM but the new system will not create home directories for these users and will not let them log on. I have read that there are issues using this method but can not find any detail as to why. Not wishing to recreate over 350 users from scratch I am looking for an easier solution. Can anyone help? The new server is 10.6.6. We use Open Directory and AFP. The paths are the same as the old server.

• RemoteApp cannot connect to webapp

  I have just set up a Server 2008 R2 machine with Remote Desktop Services. It's all running on the one server, just for a single application, which works fine locally and when using Remote Desktop Web Access on the local network. However, when accessing it over the Internet, you can log on to RD Web Access fine, but when running the RemoteApp you get the message: RemoteApp Disconnected The remote computer could not be found. Please contact your helpdesk about this error. The application and all Remote Desktop services are on a single machine. I have purchased and installed a GoDaddy Cert. It works like a charm in the local network, but I get the above message when trying to access through rdweb How can I enable the RemoteApp to function outside the local network? I think there is one or 2 steps I left out??.. Please help...

• Apache 2.2.16: client denied by server configuration

  I have problem with my server configuration. I use Apache 2.216, PHP 5.3.3 and wordpress 3.4.2 with Shopperpress. Time to time I receive error "client denied by server configuration: path/to/file" in apache log file. It is path to _tbs.php file, but it is not problem in rights of file, because this file is called 12 times on page for getting thumbs of photos and there is error only several times. I think that it has no connection to concrete photo, because once this photo is displayed corectly and next time same photo produce error. Do you have any idea what can be reason? • Programming as a minor

  Hello Everyone! I've never asked a question here at programmers, and for reasons which will become obvious later I've never answered one here, but I do poke around in short bursts. Anyway, I'm 15 right now, and I've been programming in C++ for 4 years, just working on my own projects that are aim so high as to never be finished. I've been working on a single project for the last year, and every 3 months, I add a new system into it. It might be a value tabling directory enabled log system, or a render system, or a class to load up xml files, whatever it is, I don't mind too much that the overall project (a 3d engine) isn't ever going to get finished, I just get some satisfaction from getting what I have done building and running. I don't know what I want to do when I grow up, although I suspect I'll go into some form of engineering, but I was interested in knowing if I do choose to go into a career as a developer, what kind of material I could look at to push myself up and get myself experience that might help my career later. I'm not talking about books in particular, I'm more interested in subjects areas that will get me access to good job opportunities, or that will give me a hand-up if I do computer science and software related courses at uni. One of the things I was thinking of doing was designing some of the logic gate components of a small computer - which I started briefly over the holidays, working out integer addition, subtraction and multiplication. That kind of stuff interests me, but is it really useful - or more useful then just more programming? But anyway, Any advice? Should I continue on my perpetual 3d engine? Are there any other projects or particular accomplishments that would help my education? Perhaps I should mention that I live in Perth, Australia, so local software companies are likely to be more scarce then usual.

• Magento - How to manage multiple base currencies and multiple payment gateways?

  I have two requirements to satisfy, I hope someone with more experience can help me sorting them out. Multiple Base Currencies My client wants to allow visitors to place orders in whatever currency they prefer, choosing from the ones he’ll configure. Magento only supports one Base Currency, and this is, obviously, not what I need. I checked the solution involving multiple websites, but I need a customer to be registered once and stay on the same website, not to switch from one to the other and have to register/log in on each. Manage multiple Payment Gateways per currency and per payment method This is another crucial requirement, and it’s tied to the first one. My client wants to “route” payments in different currencies to different accounts. He’ll thus have one for Euro, one for USD and one for GBP. Whenever a customer pays with one of these currencies, the payment gateway has to be chosen accordingly. Additionally, the gateway should be different depending on other rules. For example, if customer pays with a Debit Card, my client will have a payment gateway configured especially for it. If customer pays with MasterCard, the gateway will be different, and so on. The complication, in this case, arises from the fact that my client uses Realex Payments and, although it would be possible for him to open multiple accounts, the Realex module expects one single gateway. • Fix a tomcat6 error message "/bin/bash already running" when starting tomcat?

  I have a Ubuntu 10.04 machine that has tomcat6 on it. When I start tomcat6 with /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start I get * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 /bin/bash already running. and the server fails to start. Unfortunately, there is nothing in /var/log/tomcat/catalina.out to help debug the issue. With some cleverly placed echo statements it seems to be the line from /etc/init.d/tomcat6: start-stop-daemon --start -u "$TOMCAT6_USER" -g "$TOMCAT6_GROUP" \ -c "$TOMCAT6_USER" -d "$CATALINA_TMPDIR" \ -x /bin/bash -- -c "$AUTHBIND_COMMAND $TOMCAT_SH" The only thing I've changed in this script is TOMCAT6_USER=root. In servers.xml, the only thing I've changed is <Connector port="80" protocol="HTTP/1.1" from port 8080. I have tried reinstalling the package by first removing everything sudo apt-get --purge remove tomacat6 and then sudo apt-get install tomcat6 but this has not solved the issue. I have also restarted the server multiple times in hopes of some magic. Everything was working until I restarted my server. Any ideas?

  Trust, but verify. Let's say I want to hire someone a sysadmin, and give them root access to my Unix system. I want to disable X windows for them, only allow shell usage (through SSH, maybe), so that all operations they perform will be through the shell (not mouse operations). I need a tool that will log to a remote server all commands they issue, as they issue them. So even if they install a back door and cover their tracks, that will be logged remotely. How do I disable everything but shell access? Is there a tool for instantaneously remotely logging commands as they are issued?

  stackoverflow points me "belongs-on-serverfault" on this, so crossposting. I am frustrated of not having a good Linux GUI administration and development tool for PostgreSQL. pgAdmin III is buggy and unusable piece of... hmm, software, compared to Windows-only PostgreSQL Maestro and EMS PostgreSQL manager. phpPgaAmin does not looks promising. EMS PostgreSQL manager can work under Wine, but such setup have a number of issues. Requirements are: Table data editing and browsing for large tables (1M+), able to jump by FK or some master-slave editing, GUI filtering and so on. ER diagrams with in-place schema editing Schema editing and browsing with all useful GUI support Schema changes log to put into DB versioning (migrations script). Tabbed interface to be able to work with a number of tables and SQL queries at once. And so on. Any ideas?

• What is the correct term for - server/client database sync via API?

  Forgive the vague question title. I've been programming mobile apps for 3 years now, and I've got a little too far from the web services and server side code then I probably should have. Anyway, I'm doing a personal project now and I want to create an web API for it. One of my requirements is to check for updates from my app, so I would send a timestamp to the API. I've used many APIs that my clients prepared for me and only now am I appreciating their work ! What is the term or technique used to create an API backed by a database which tracks changes via dates/timestamps, basically an effective way for me to query changes occurring since a timestamp. Simply put, I want that my app can call my API in order to sync new data and changed data from the server, to the app. The app would only have a timestamp of the last time it synced with the server. Would I have a log table for each data table in my database which adds a record for each change? Then I could query all changes with a timestamp superior to the one passed to the API. Can anyone point me in the right direction on this?

• How to make Logitech Anywhere MX work in Ubuntu 12.X?

  I have a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse (wireless), when I connect it to the computer it doesn't work. The mouse works in other computers with Windows and with Fedora 17, but it doesn't work in two different computers with Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10. Moreover these same computers work with another Microsoft wireless mouse. So I think the combination of Logitech MX and Ubuntu doesn't play well. • Can't connect to sql server 2008 named instance

  I have sql server 2005 and 2008 running on a server on my local (and very straightforward) network. Using sql management studio 2008 and visual studio 2008, I can connect over the network to the 2005 instance which is the default instance. I can't connect to the 08 instance (named MC08). I can connect to both when logged in to the server. Remote connections have been enabled for MC08 and dynamic ports is turned off (assigned to port 1045). The sql browser service is running as well. This used to work so I'm not sure what has changed. I can't connect using the IP address either. Nothing unusual in the event log either. Any ideas?

• USB resets with Ubuntu 9.10

  Since the upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 I have issues with getting USB device resets on my Maxtor OneTouch USB harddrive: Nov 9 20:54:37 localhost kernel: [32459.100021] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 Nov 9 21:54:37 localhost kernel: [36059.100017] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 Nov 9 23:24:37 localhost kernel: [41459.112025] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 The device itself continues to work fine, the resets however wake the device out of its sleep state and thus cause it to spin up, which is very annoying. Interestingly, as the log shows, the resets happen at pretty regular intervals (i.e. one hour or half an hour), not randomly. An USB card reader seems to have the same issues, while another USB harddrive from a different manufactor works fine on the same PC. What could be causing this and how could I fix it?
