• Timer applications running under lock on Windows Phone 7

  Under the current Windows Phone 7 Application Certification Requirements (pdf) applications running under lock must "stop any ... active timers" (section 6.3.1). However looking out on Marketplace there are a number of timer/stopwatch apps claiming to run under lock and also allow lock to be disabled in their settings. How are these apps certified or is there some loosening on the restrictions by Microsoft if the app allows the user to make that decision? Also some of these apps also suggest they continue even when the app is exited or when the device off. Is it the case that they are not truly running under these circumstances, i.e. the timers either start where they left off when reactivated, or perhaps use the OS time to work out the time elapsed between tombstoning and reactivation? In these circumstance I also presume it is not possible for the app to notify the user when the timer completes?

  My company participates in Windows Error Reporting via Winqual. We'd like to add some additional data to our crash reports, using WERRegisterMemoryBlock. Obviously we'd like to make sure this is working before we ship our next version. How can we test it? Is there a way to locally preview precisely what is going to be sent? Does this realistically reproduce what we are going to be able to retrieve from Winqual? Alternatively, can we generate a real report from a developer machine, then retrieve the report from Winqual? How would we distinguish this test case from the rest of our Winqual data?

• Where is the windows app installed + .NET + VS2005

  I deployed a windows application in the following website http://StagingServer/MyProgs/MPP/ on my intranet site, using the Publish Wizard of VS 2005... I accepted all defaults (including Offline support). My users were also able to install the same from the path specified. But when I try to find out the exact location of the EXE in the client, it is not pointing anywhere. I also tried a file search but in vain. Initially I thought the application is running from the server itself, but we were able to start the app, even when the server is down (ofcourse it takes more time to search for updates initially). Ps : The app is showing even in control panel... Raja

  Scenario I have a C# Windows Service that essentially subscribes to some events and if anything is triggered by the events, it carries out a few tasks. The Thing... ....is that these events are monitoring processes, which I need to restart at certain times of the day. Question What's the best way I can go about performing this task at an exact time? • Controlling Windows Media Player through PHP / batch files

  I'm currently writing a tiny webapp for my HTPC (actually, a PC serving as both a media player and web- / fileserver) that will allow me to remotely control the playing of audio, without having to turn on my TV just to switch songs. I'm using Windows Media Player as my audio player of choice, and I thought I could control it through PHP's COM Class. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find any documentation or examples on controlling WMP through this interface. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? A second (and much less preferable) solution would be to use PHP's exec() call to start batch files that, in turn, control WMP.

• Transferring data to (Windows) Mobile Devices

  I created an app for Windows Mobile 6.5 and am fairly happy with it. However, if anyone else need to use this app, they will have to transfer an initial file (txt or csv) to the device. For a developer this isn't a problem but is this too much to ask of an end user? Granted, they will want to move (sync) data back to their desktop after the device's data have been updated. So how do other apps solve this problem? Do I need to provide some kind of syncing software?

I can provide, say, a text file that lists each file and the target directory for it. Then I need help creating a batch file that will actually extract these files into their target locations. So I intend to change to another way to approach the goal. Here's my idea: Get a stream from http url. Decode the mp3 stream. Play the result from step 2. • Write-access for c# app in it's own exe dir in Windows 7

  I know that user accounts in Windows 7 are limited by default, so a program cannot just write anywhere on the system (as it was possible in Win XP). But I thought that it would be possible that e.g. a c# app is allowed to write inside it's own exe-directory or it's subfolders at least (not everything is 'user settings' or should be written to "MyDocuments"...). So currently my c# app throws an UnauthorizedAccessException when trying to write inside the exe dir. Is there anything you can do in c# code to allow writing inside the exe dir?

• java cannot reserver heap size error on windows server

  HI, I have the following configuration: Server : windows 2003 server (32 bit) java version: 1.5_0_22 I get the following error when executing from command line ( my code is based off eclipse wihch gives the same error) java -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -Xmx512m Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. The server has over 20GB physical memory with over 19 GB free right now. It does not give an error upto -Xmx486m I have read other articles about contiguous memory space. There is hardly anything running on this server. Can I validae this in any way? Thanks

  I am developing a Windows Phone app where users can update a list. Each update, delete, add etc need to be stored in a database that sits behind a web service. As well as ensuring all the operations made on the phone end up in the cloud, I need to make sure the app is really responsive and the user doesn’t feel any lag time whatsoever. What’s the best design to use here? Each check box change, each text box edit fires a new thread to contact the web service? Locally store a list of things that need to be updated then send to the server in batch every so often (what about the back button)? Am I missing another even easier implementation?   Is it possible to specify the application icon for a windows mobile app from a resource file or other configuration besides the .csproj? The reason I would like to do this is because I have an application that can be configured to run in several different ways. We would like to build out three unique .cabs based on these configurations, and we would like to use a different icon for each version. One option we've considered is just running multiple builds and swapping out the icon file each time, but we were hoping there would be a way to do this using a "resource" DLL or something along those lines, that could be compiled or linked in to the main .exe.

However SQLite doesn't seem to have the ThenBy statement?   Hello, is there a way (on Windows XP+) to redirect the output of a window created by a process created with e.g. CreateProcess to a window of your own program? I'd like to make a nicer GUI for ffplay.exe which is an open source video player. It is a command line tool, which opens a simple window in which it plays back the video. Can I "capture" this window and display the output in my own program somehow? Thanks for any hints you can provide.

  I am trying to develop an app to retrieve print data, edit its content and then print the data. I am using RedMon for that purpose. But all the tutorials I have seen online as of now relates to storing the data into a PDF using RedMon. I want to be able to configure RedMon on a windows platform such that it writes the entire print data(the data that is bound to appear on the printing paper) as it is into a .txt file or maybe provide directly as an input to the java app that I have made. I have been unsuccessful in finding a solution for this till now. Is this achievable?

• Finding Windows printer driver name using API

  I can't seem to find an API call that returns the driver name for a Windows printer. Note that I'm not talking about the friendly name of the printer in the printer folder, I'm talking about the name of actual driver being used as shown on the "Advanced" tab when you look at the printer properties: I'm trying to detect when I'm printing to the "Generic / Text Only" driver regardless of what name the user chooses for the printer. It doesn't seem like this should be hard, but I can't find it in the DEVMODE structure or anyplace else I've thought to look for it. Thanks for the help!

  What is a good approach for credential checks for windows mobile app. Knowing that it is an occasionally connected device. Should I keep the user credential into the local database? If the credential doesn't exist in the db, try to see if it has internet access and do the check through a web service? If both fails then display an error message ? If logins is successful then store the credential to the local database store then upon next login go against the database first? Is this a good approach?

• Windows Mobile 6.5 flick (scrolling with inertia) not working

  After upgrading to windows mobile 6.5, my ListView control does not work properly with custom items (rows with alternate colors) and the new gesture mechanism... On a mobile device, if the user initiates a flick or pan, after scrolling the first few items, the last items are not shown on the screen, but will show up if the user explicitly taps on them -- so basically the last screen is just white. The WM_DRAWITEM message is sent to all children though, but they just don't show up on the screen. Scrolling with a bar works fine. Any ideas? I have seen some reports of similar behavior from other users, but not sure if this is a bug in the listview control itself or if there is something else that needs to/can be implemented to support flick and pan actions. The application code currently doesn't handle WM_GESTURE messages, so the flick action is done with Microsoft's own code to support legacy applications. Thanks!

  Hi All, I've built my application in .net and sql server 2008. Having looking for a hosting soultion I stumpled upon windows azure. I saw that currently its only availabe in the US. Can I use the service if I live outside of the US? If I upload my website up there and people try entering, will people from outside of the US be blocked? Sorry for posting an unrelated program question. I am not receiving an answer anywhere else, and I can see that there are serveral question regarding azure which are not program related here.   I have a website that is using Windows Server 2003. The site is called https://mysite.com/ and at ip address 111.1.1.1. Now when I log into the site all my relative links that are generated using NavURL (<%# NavURL("Images/Menu/img.gif")%) are saying "http://111.1.1.1/Images/Menu/img.gif" instead of "https://mysite.com/Images/Menu/img.gif". This is causing an error because it needs to be secure. I'm sure there is a setting on the server somewhere to point to the name and not the ip, but I don't know where. Thanks for your help.

Just down vote me if not :p Basically, what I'm looking for is a way to push a windows hotkey and have whatever text is in the clipboard be stripped of formatting. An example of what the macro could do: I push (whatever hotkey combo here) open notepad.exe Paste to notepad from clipboard Select all text in notepad Copy/Cut all text from notepad Close notepad I'm just wondering if someone has done something like this before, or knows how it could be accomplished. I think this could be a huge time-saver for almost anyone. I find myself doing this all the time when cutting and pasting between different office applications, etc.
